Customer Reviews:
ABSOLUTE MUST HAVE FOR EURYTMICS FANS.......2006-08-18
This has got to be the most comprehensive collection of Eurtyhmics songs to date. The sound quality is astounding. And the songs that I've never heard before. WOW. If you like Eurythmics, this is a MUST HAVE.
Watch out for the price!!!.......2006-07-04
The price for each remastered CD included on this box is now $9.97...there are 8CDs in the box...so the price must be less than $80...but...NO!!! it's $123!!!! Buying them separately you'll save more than $43!!! Nonsense!!!
I give it 4 star for the content, but obviously 0 stars for the price!!!
Nice but something is missing.......2006-01-07
The box is very nice and I agree with other positive comments on Amazon. However, I want to stress my deception in seeing that "1984 - For the love of big brother" is NOT included in the box. It is a wonderful album (released under a different label) and certainly I expected to find it in such a collection.
Another missing point is: lyrics. At the time, all vynil LPs included printed lyrics, while now in the CD jacket there is just a leaflet with photos and historical comments.
Long Overdue.......2005-12-30
Eurythmics finally get the remaster/reissue box set treatment, and boy, is this way overdue.
While Sweet Dreams is the song by which your average stateside music fan knows them, it is but one song in literally scores of high quality music that they created over many years.
You have your early more experimental electronic music as on In The Garden and also Sweet Dreams (see bonus tracks for both), perfect electronic pop on Touch, your corporate rock influence on Be Yourself Tonight and especially Revenge, a return to electronic roots on Savage, and the overlooked pop masterpiece of We Two Are One.
While I agree with some of the other reviewers that some personal favorite rarer tracks are missing (for me, that's the alternative B-side electronic version of "I Could Give You A Mirror"), overall this package is well worth the money between having remastered CDs, the new artwork & linear notes, and the bonus tracks that I only have had to date on scratchy vinyl or tape copies from other fans.
Also, I believe the 1984 soundtrack is a glaring omission, but am wondering if there were any legal issues given the problems with one of the movie's bigwigs at the time (he didn't feel the music belonged in the movie, and I believe I read that a recent issue of the DVD removed all the Eurythmics' music). Wasn't this also released on a different label? Regardless, the songs stand on their own even without the movie association---For The Love of Big Brother from that album is one of the most beautiful Eurythmic tracks ever.
Excellent Albums, Disappointing Box Set.......2005-12-30
I was and am a big Eurythmics fan, and I already own the original versions of all these albums. I bought the box set because I knew that I would want all the bonus tracks. They are, however, for the most part disappointing. Only "Grown Up Girls" really counts as essential, and some of the other bonus tracks actually detract from the albums they accompany.
The fans really should have been given something extra for buying the whole box at once. Currently, all 8 albums can be purchased together for $4 more than the price of the boxed set--so the advantage of buying this is a cardboard box and saving $4. There absolutely should have been a bonus disc containing the two new songs that appear on the "Ultimate Collection," plus other b-sides that do not appear on the remastered albums. And a special commemorative booklet would have been nice as well.
What would have really made it worth the price was the addition of "1984." I can understand why BMG didn't think there would be a public for a broader release of a remastered version of this album, but it absolutely should have been included in the box. I would wager that everyone who bought this box would have wanted that album as well.
There is no doubt that the remastering is good, cleaning up the recordings and improving sound separation. The horns on "Would I Lie to You" jump out of the speakers, for example. And "In the Garden" benefits the most--it sounds fantastic.
If you take out "Peace"--which didn't need remastering, and one or two of your least favorite discs, you would save a lot of money just buying the albums individually. If you must have them all, then this is a good way of getting them, but it should have been so much more.
