It's fitting that the Kid Rock revival got started when the Beastie Boys featured him in their Grand Royal magazine--and not because the kid from Detroit shares their skin tone. Rock has often been compared with the early Beasties--the boys of "Fight for Your Right to Party" and "Brass Monkey," the boys no one ever thought would grow up. With lines like "I ain't straight outta Compton, I'm straight out the trailer" and "I started an escort service--for all the right reasons," it's obvious that Kid Rock doesn't aim to follow suit. But that's no hindrance to Devil--backed by the funky metal band Twisted Brown Trucker and special guests like blues vets Robert Bradley and Thronetta Davis, Rock is hosting one hell of an interesting party. Ultimately, Rock's party is great, schlocky fun, equal parts old Beasties and Sebastian Bach--making Devil a guilty pleasure, the Starship Troopers of hip-hop. --Randy Silver

A Modern Detroit Rock Classic.......2007-07-12
I bought this album the day it came out almost ten years ago in my hometown of Detroit. Since then I've bought the Limited Edition LP, all of the singles off of it, and the clean radio edition of the album just to say I own them all. To say that I love the album is probably a bit much.
When listening to this album it's key to remember the source and time that it came out. It was released right around the time of the Limp Bizkit era and the rap / rock fusion sound is what we were listening to at the time. This combined with the fact that Kid was originally a Detroit rapper should alone explain the overall sound of the album. If it doesn't then you should consider the source...
It was released by a Detroit artist for a Detroit audience. You're talking about the town where to this day Bob Seger has outsold the Beatles (and with good reason, if you ask me). The music scene in Detroit has always been a little off kilter to the rest of the country, so if you're buying the album specifically for "Only God Knows Why" then you'll be disappointed and should buy the single instead.
You should buy this album if you're looking for a specific sound that you won't hear duplicated anywhere else, before or since.
Very good.......2007-05-13
I bought this CD for "Only God Knows Why" since it is a great song
NOT SO "ROCK".......2007-04-14
ALTHOUGH HIS NAME IS KID ROCK HE SINGS MOSTLY RAP. THIS CD IS A FLOP. I THINK THE ONLY GOOD SONG ON THIS CD IS "ONLY GOD KNOWS WHY". THIS SONG PROVES THAT THERE ARE PRICES TO FAME AND ITS NOT ALL WHAT ITS CRACKED UP TO BE. IF YOU REALLY LIKE KID ROCK I SAY GET THE CD. IF YOU LIKE 1 SONG BY KID ROCK I SAY DONT GET THIS CD.
I can't believe people listen to this garbage.......2007-03-29
I am so thankful that all of these songs are out of radio rotation, because this jerk has created some of the worst music that America has ever witnessed. If you gave this album any more than two stars you should get your head checked.
A Classic.......2007-01-31
I've literally worn out my first copy of this CD and bought another. Truly a classic. Rap is crap, but his style of it with hard rock, grit and attitude is fine with me. The album is a public service actually. We needed the song Cowboy to replace Back in Black as the perennial strip club theme song. A replacement was long overdue.

Brand New have specialized in pain ever since the pop-punk emo-rage of their 2001 debut release Your Favorite Weapon. But they've outdone themselves on The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me. If the songs on Weapon were paper cuts, the ones here are gaping chainsaw wounds, full of seismic, howling agony. The moody rumbles of 2003's Deja Entendu were pointing here, but this is something else, with Mogwai-level dynamic range and tracks that careen from introspection to fury and back again. Lyrically, lead singer Jesse Lacey's words remain excruciating and harrowing things, but that's nothing new. It's the music propping them up which gives this effort such depth and punch. "Degausser" starts so innocently, then uses a bridge augmented with a bitter children's chorus straight out of The Wall as a lead in to Lacey's bitter refrain of "I'll never say anything right." Then there's the nearly 8-minute "Limousine (MS Rebridge)," epic, and epically sad, constantly threatening to descend into pure cacophony (and eventually succeeding). Repeated listens will tune your ear to the band's still-intact pop sense (especially on "Not the Sun" and "The Archers Bows Have Broken"), which keeps the record lively and unpredictable, and away from becoming a depressing, head-in-the-oven mope. Brand New went through three years of intense recording sessions to make it happen, but it was worth the effort. --Matthew Cooke

Powerful.......2007-07-04
This album takes off in a different direction from Deja Entandu, Its full of emotion and power like their last album but with more screaming. An awesome album, Brand New continues to refine their sound and have come a long way from Your Favorite Weapon
Better than ever.......2007-05-28
I've been a Brand New fan for a long time, and this album has only increased my love for such an innovative, talented band. Many bands change their styles to please more people to become more famous, but Brand New has not done this. Instead, they continue to grow in their own style and grow in popularity anyway. This album includes Jesse's thought-provoking lyrics, awesome guitar parts, and meaningful melodies and harmonies fans have come to expect. This is the best album I have ever heard, and I cannot stop listening to it. They have grown so much, especially in diversity of their songs. This album is perfect in every way! BUY IT!
The Best Album I Never Heard in 2006!.......2007-05-16
The year 2006 had come to a close and I had not heard this album. Usually at the end of every year I compile a list of the Top20 albums I've heard in the year. I missed one and I cannot forgive myself! This albums continues through and through with the main theme, "good vs. evil" and it works on almost every track. It is one of the albums I just can't put too far away from my cdplayer. I've loaded up some songs on my iPod, including the 2007 single, "Jesus Christ". "Brand New" was problably the most under-rated artiste of 2006.
One of my favorite bands.......2007-05-09
I have both of their best albums and I listen to them both front to back weekly, they are both always found in my disc-changer in my truck. Track 3 is my favorite on this Album.
My Favorite Album Ever.......2007-05-05
All in all, a genius, unique, and great album.
1. Sowing Season - Great song, great guitar riff, and it just punches you right in the face...in a good way. Yeah.
2. Millstone - Awesome sounding vocal harmony at the beginning. Cool chorus, especially the cool backup vocal track. A very nifty drum tom outro.
3. Jesus Christ - Jesus Christ I love this song. The ending gives me a chill every time, the way Jesse sing/screams that is amazing. I don't like screaming, but Jesse makes it sound like a mixture of singing and screaming and I love it love it love it. It was definitely my favorite when I first heard the CD, though not any more, read on.
4. Degausser - This song gives you a crazy feeling...it's very dark sounding in my opinion, and the first time the ensemble of Jesses sang "Take apart your head" it kind of startled me. Great song though, awesome awesome awesome outro...lyrically and musically.
5. Limousine - I didn't like this one at first, but it grew on me very much. Starts out very quiet and then kicks into crunchy sounding vocals (only way I can think to describe it). And my favorite part - the resolution from the crunchiness (which isn't bad, by the way..just crunchy) to the beautiful cleanness. When it switches it gives me chills. I also thought the end where he repeats "I love you so much..etc." many many times was too long...but then I listened some more and realized it was extremely cool, because it's a slow slow slow crescendo that you hardly notice. Great song.
6. You Won't Know - Ah I love it. Starts with an extremely quiet intro. Then BOOM...another punch in the face with those scream/sing vocals. My god, I love this song. Such energy and so great great great sounding.
7. Welcome to Bangkok - This one is an instrumental. It's pretty cool, I guess...but I usually skip it. It's cool though, cool guitar work. I saw them live recently on tour with 2 other bands, and both bands came out for this song and were just hitting cymbals, drums, and throwing drums. It was very cool seeing 14 people on stage playing drums and guitars...so basically it's awesome live, but just slightly above average on the album
8. Not The Sun - Tied with You Won't Know for my favorite song on the album. So very cool. From the catchy bassline to the (old)Michael Jackson-like vocals in the verse to the vocal slides in the chorus, it just excels so much. I think my favorite thing about the song is the use of the snare drum in it. I can't explain that though...just know that it's great. Great lyrics too, as is the case with just about every Brand New song. So clever and so meaningful.
9. Luca - The first half or so of this song is acoustic, where Jesse shows us his ability to jump pitches beautifully. I would tell you the highlight of the song, but I feel like I'd be spoiling it, so I won't. Listen to it loud though, but don't try to go to sleep to it, trust me.
10. Untitled - I can't say I understand the point of putting this song on the CD to be honest. It's instrumental, and has the same average guitar part through the whole thing. I assume the weird talking in the background has some kind of meaning, but I've yet to figure it out. I skip it, sorry Brand New.
11. The Archers' Bows Are Broken - Back to the greatness. Not much to say about this one other than that it's quite catchy, and quite good. I absolutely love the lyrics as well.
12. Handcuffs - I'm pretty undecided on this one. Musically, I like it...but I can't seem to get past the lyrics. It's not that they're bad, they just sound wrong to me. Hard to explain. But I've gotten used to it and now sing along.
13. Luca (Acoustic) - Some of the versions of the CD come with this song. It's an acoustic version of Luca. Some different lyrics, and no electric guitars or drums throughout most of the song. Enjoyable, of course, though I prefer the regular version.
This is my favorite album ever. While there are some albums where I enjoy every song on the album and skip none, this one has a few skip-worthy ones...yet somehow it hits me as the best album I've ever heard. Get it, trust me. Don't expect Deja Entendu and DEFINITELY don't expect Your Favorite Weapon. I love both, and I love this one. This band evolves so fast, it's ridiculous. They go from good to great to amazing and they put on the best live show I've seen.

Devil's Got A New Disguise.......2007-03-28
The Very Best Of Aerosmith; Devil's Got A New Disguise ***
Useless. Well not entirely there are two new great songs on this compalation. In the history of rock n' roll no other band has had this many compalations. Thats right Aerosmith holds the crown with far more then Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, and yes even The Beatles. The thing that blows many Aerosmith fans minds is that of all the compalations the band has released or that the record company has released only one has been any good, O Yeah Ultamate Aerosmith Hits. It covered the whole career. It had it all and left nothing out, it wasnt a best of but a hits collection and it gave you all the hits not the best of. This however is called a "Very Best Of" a term I am using loosley. While this does serve more as a greatest hits because all it has is hits it is missing the real "Very Best Of" Aerosmith. There is no (original) 'Walk This Way' 'Mama Kin' or even the cult classic 'Let The Music Do The Talkin.'
Now as a "starter kit" for new Aero fans or even for that casual fan who wants an Aerosmith cd for the car this would be fine...except almost all the songs are remixes and alternate versions other then what was the hit.Which is cool that the songs are being released in different versions for die-hards like myself but they are going about this the wrong way. Rerelease the classic albums and pu tthe alternate versions as bonus tracks...what a genius idea... Now that is the smart thing to do, but as we all know Steven Tyler is natorious for doing things the difficult way, but is that not what we all love about him.
The biggest problem I guess I have with this compalation is what true Aerosmith fan really perfers the Run-DMC version of 'Walk This Way' to the original. You will be hard pressed to find someone who will actually say that, and it is with concediration that it revivved their career and it is a classic but no more so than the original. This is also why I would recomend O Yeah to this because it contains both versions.
'Sedona Sunrise' is the first of the two new tracks. It is a nice ballad with incredible guitar work from Joe and Brad. Steven's vocals as always are amazing. The title track 'Devils Got A New Disguise' is a nice rocker in the same vine as the songs on Get A Grip. Great guitar work again, the vocals are killer and the lyrics are also very well written. Tom actually plays some great bass here as he always does but on this track it really stands out. Joey lays down a nice solid groove for the rest of the guy sto build off of and even though this will not it has the makings of a hit single. My only problem with these songs is that I wish they would have been saved for a regular studio album.
So over all, all the songs are great and are really classics in Aerosmiths cannon. But most people already own all of these. With a few adjustments this would be a great way to start an Aerosmith collection, but really this is just something for die-hards like myself.
How sad..........2007-03-23
I can't give this compilation less than 3 stars because the music on it IS very good. However, I'm getting a little tired of repackaged greatest hits collections! The best one would be O Yeah!, which covers everything up to the brilliant Just Push Play. Like the new songs, but I'm ready for a new album.
This is probably just to fulfill a contractual agreement.
good compilation.......2007-03-13
we have a lot of classic Aerosmith, so this is a good compliment to that collection
Horrible.......2007-01-31
This Has To Be The Worst Rip Off Ever It Dosent Even Have Angel, Draw The Line Or Kings And Queens I Definatley Wont Be Wasting My Hard Earned Cash On This Sh**
Must have.......2007-01-17
Like the title says its the best. A must have for all classic rock fans.

Fashion shows tend to be set to pretty cutting-edge music these days, but you'd hardly know it based on the soundtrack to this movie on life at a fashion mag: Not only does it start with Madonna, but the song is "Vogue"--pretty much the single most obvious choice there could be. That said, "Vogue" remains a great track: It hasn't aged one bit since its 1990 release, and fits in well with the first of two variations on dance music offered here: club anthems (see also DJ Colette's "Feelin' Hypnotized," David Morales and Tamra Keenan's "Here I Am") and sophisticated lounge (Bitter:Sweet's "Bittersweet Faith," Mocean Worker's "Tres Tres Chic"). The latter style also feeds directly into Theodore Shapiro's score, which is represented only on the jazzy suite that concludes the CD. The balance of the tracks is made up of elegant, well-crafted songs that feel perhaps a bit too
polite (Alanis Morissette's cover of Seal's "Crazy," Moby's "Beautiful"). It would have been nice to get more curve balls, like the aforementioned Mocean Worker and Azure Ray's lovely "Sleep," which fans of Imogen Heap should dig. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

I must stop buying soundtracks of movies that I like: appanrently not all of the songs that I am fond of are on a soundtrack CD
CD and DVD for the Devil wears Prada.......2007-05-14
This movie is out of sight. It describes perfectly what goes around in any type of organization. Power, ambition, fashion, sacriface and how some kind of responsibilites control our minds and day, that we cant pay much attention to our familes. Working is the only way to survive and provide for our loved ones. Merill Streep is fantastic in this personification, the perfect boss in top of the world that makes sure no one is above her. Her non verbals are exquisite and the way she dresses for this movie is way beyond. Every actress and actor in this movie are very professional. Ann Hataway and "Niles" of course is fantastic. And of course "Emily" with out her the movie is not good. Perfect.
About the soundtrack i can say that is very good, I,ve heard it almost a million times already. Very good indeed both. I rate the movie and the soundtract with 5 stars. Bravo.
Realy Great!.......2007-04-25
When you buy a CD don't people just check out what songs are on the CD? DUH. And if Suddenly I see is not on the list and that is the song you want that what is preventing you to buy it from ITunes?
This Cd is very good, no it's great and I think that is really just want that one song, DOWNLOAD IT OFF ITUNES FOR 99 Cents. It not like it cost a ton of money people. GOODNESS!
Well anyways, this Cd, as I said, is amazing. I really enjoy it when doing my school work or when I am trying to relax. I especially like SLEEP and FEELIN' HYPNOTIZED. The best of the best though, I have to admiot is VOGUE. Really a classic song and is probably going to really make you feel like jumping down to the Marc Jacobs Store or the Macys or Saxs 5th Ave. and get a pair of Jimmy Choo's.
It's just fine!.......2007-04-22
If people will open their ears and hear "Suddenly I See" on every movie and tv show, then they'd understand why it's not on TDWP Soundtrack!
Everytime I turn on the tv, there's a preview of some movie with that SAME SONG as its background music. Yeah, it's a great song, but it's not the only good one out there and certainly not the only good one by Ms. Tunstall!
This soundtrack, however, attempts to bring the listener in touch with some lesser known bands and music genres. There's Bittersweet Faith...the song that played while Andy was at her friend Lily's gallery opening and the hot writer kissed her. Besides that is an AMAZING cover of Seal's "Crazy" by Alanis Morrissette.
And since most people KNEW that the song "Suddenly I See" wasn't on the track listing...why, I ask, did they purchase it?
Perhaps they wanted something to complain about.

Not content with the simplistic "crossover" formula, superstar tenor Andrea Bocelli has been pursuing alternative paths since he emerged as a vocal phenomenon in the mid-1990s: operatic classics and contemporary popular song. The singer's last few albums have showcased his love for the former (including homages to his beloved Verdi: the Requiem and Verdi aria collection). But Cieli di Toscana ("Tuscan Skies") marks a triumphant return to the pop idiom last explored on Sogno, offering a highly varied series of the kind of beautifully crafted contemporary melodies that initially won Bocelli acclaim.
The familiar cast of songwriter-collaborators (including Francesco Sartori, responsible for the smash success "Time to Say Goodbye") mixes with new blood; Bocelli himself unveils his songwriting talents on "Il Diavolo e l'Angelo." It's a highly produced affair, but behind all the gloss, Bocelli sings with a newfound, relaxed, even mellow quality. There are intimately touching moments--"L'Incontro," a tribute to his first son featuring Bocelli's own poetry as read by U2's Bono--as well as soaring flights of lyricism (the duet "L'Abitudine" with Italian singer Helena). And on "Mascagni," with its quotes from that composer's operas, Bocelli makes another nod to his classical affinities. But whatever the style, Bocelli is a singer who knows how to go straight to his listeners' hearts. --Sarah Chin
Album Description
Exclusive UK version of Bocelli's third pop release includes the exclusive bonus track 'Tornera La Neve' and CD-ROM. The album also features 'L'Incontro' a duet with Gerard Depardieu. David Foster co-composes some of the tracks on this album as well. 2001.

Just what it says. See my other Andrea Bocelli reviews to get the idea I really like this guy.
Emotional therapy!.......2007-05-14
"He is all heart; there's no pretense. You can feel it." No kidding. These were my mom's last comments about Bocelli two months before she left earthly existence.
This album helped me process a lot of emotional residue affiliated with the strain of difficult dynamics between my mom and myself.
Don't get me wrong. The music isn't sad; it's pure heart and emotion, so it may evoke emotions. The last cut, "L'Ultimo Re" is gorgeous with the way his voice soars!

Great music!.......2006-12-18
I bought the album before listening to any of the songs, because i'm a Bocelli fan. I was not disappointed. Wonderful melodies, beautiful voice. My personal favourites are Melodramma, Chiara and Resta Qui, but this is a great cd overall.
Cieli di Toscana.......2006-08-25
There is no other voice quite like Andrea's voice. I keep listening to this CD over and over as some of the songs just touch my heart, both with his voice and the written arrangements. One of my very favorites from Andrea. He has the same qualities to his voice with popular songs as he does with opera. When following the English translations in the CD case, the message of each song becomes very clear through the inflections and tonal quality of his voice.
LOVE IT!!!!.......2006-08-25
What more can I say once agian a total great cd, that will sure to become my favorite and my kids love it too!!! Ages 5, 8, and 15. WOW>>>>> Pleases all ages,LOVE IT LOVE LOVE IT

Third time isn't the charm..........2007-05-05
...Because the charm is already there in John Lowery's (stage name: John 5) first solo effort, Vertigo. The Devil Knows My Name might be his best solo album thus far, but this is subjective to the listener, of course. This is not to say the previous two were sub-par, though. All three are excellent, but to my ears the music gets better and better as each album passes.
No longer under Shrapnel Records, this album is the first under 60 Cycle Hum Records. Note that although there are eleven tracks, three of them are a minute and a half or less in length. We are still given fifty-five minutes of shredding and radiant music, however. Another thing worth noting is the cover of Guns N' Roses' "Welcome to the Jungle." Since there are never vocals in John's solo albums, the vocals for this song are replicated with the guitar, and it's a pleasant treat.
John handles all guitars, but like with his last release, Songs for Sanity, there are guest appearances. "The Werewolf of Westeria" features Joe Satriani, "Black Widow of La Porte" features Jim Root, and "The Washing Away of Wrong" features Eric Johnson. John also handles the banjo and bass (but with contributions from Piggy D. and Matt Bissonette). He has truly made a name for himself leaving Manson, joining Rob Zombie, and releasing three solo albums. As each solo album passes, I give more and more appreciation for his talent.
Surprisingly Amazing.......2007-05-03
I am completely in awe af how great this guy is. He may look like a freak, and he has been associated with that idiot Marilyn Manson, but this guy is the real deal. I was initially attracted to get this because of the fact that my hero, Joe Satriani, is featured on "The Werewolf of Westeria". Although Satch's contributions are limited and brief, I was truly amazed by the rest of this CD. Eric Johnson is featured later on in the album with a cool spacey phaser/delay-driven solo on "The Washing Away of Wrong". John's chops are blazing fast, but he doesn't solely rely on playing fast in order to create good instrumental guitar music. This album is a perfect combination of demonic and chilling themes, low crushing metal riffs, smokin' shred solos, upbeat bluegrass plucking, and nice melodic choruses. Why does this guy even waste his time with that loser Manson? If you're into the likes of Satch, Vai, Petrucci, and Eric Johnson like I am... buy this!
JOHN-5 KICKS IT OUT!!!.......2007-05-01
Get this. Get this NOW! Debut album from former Marilyn Manson stringslinger John-5, and who knew this boy could rock like this?!?!
Normally, I hate intsrumental guitar wanger albums. But this album is unreal. I listen to it at home and in the car all the time now.

More of an addition to "The Devil You Know"...but still great.......2007-05-31
This doesn't really seem like an album in and of itself...more as a second-disc bonus material that should've been packaged with THE DEVIL YOU KNOW. Still, these seven songs are all great, and Snider's performance is intimate and quirky as always. His songwriting is at its peak...basically, this is an intimate, live acoustic album with a guy and his guitar, telling stories and joking with the audience in between songs. Fans will definitely enjoy this; non-fans should start elsewhere, perhaps with Snider's last effort, THE DEVIL YOU KNOW, or any one of his other fine records.
Perfect For a Fan.......2007-05-20
If you are a fan keeping your Todd Snider collection up-to-date this is a great buy.
If you are just discovering Todd Snider, Buy "The Devil You Know" first.
Good, but not the place to start.......2007-05-20
I have to admit that this album, while certainly not bad, is somewhat disappointing. I've been a Todd Snider fan since the release of his first single "Talking Seattle Grunge Rock Blues" in 1994, and while some of his albums aren't completely solid, each one has at least a handful of keepers that make the album worthwhile. And granted, this one is no exception. There are a few songs here that are easily worth the price of admission, most notably "The Devil You Know," which even manages to improve on the studio version. But there's something missing from most of the performances here. On his previous live album "Near Truths and Hotel Rooms," there is an immediacy and an audience rapport that makes the songs in that performance come alive.
Regardless of your opinion of some of his more "sophomoric" tracks like "Beer Run," the album "Near Truths..." crackles with energy, making it one of the best live albums I've ever heard. I know that Todd Snider has had somewhat of a career resurgence in the past few years, owing to the success of "Nashville Skyline" and "The Devil You Know" (which are, admittedly, two of his best albums). I also realize that part of his newfound success owes to the more serious tone of those albums (although anyone who thinks that Todd Snider has only recently become a "serious" artist probably isn't familiar with early songs like "I Spoke as a Child," "I Can't Complain" or even later-day gems like "Waco Moon").
But those albums, serious as they were, were still spirited and passionate. This E.P., on the other hand, mostly sounds leaden, as if the audience was too reserved or too indifferent to respond to songs that practically demand interaction. And that's too bad. I've seen him live probably a dozen times, and every time I've seen him, including on the tour for "The Devil You Know," the crowd vibe and his performance level were closer in feel to "Near Truths...," that is, energetic and high-spirited. I just wish he'd released one of those shows instead of this one. If you like the songs here, get the album "The Devil You Know." The versions on that album are, by and large, better than the ones here. This album is not bad, but it's definitely not the place to start.
Not "Hotel Rooms, Part II". Better material, for one thing........2007-05-18
At some point in time during the current presidential regime, Todd Snider realized that his considerable story-telling chops could be used for more than just describing the drama of finding a friend's couch to crash on or cataloging the records he listens to. Maybe the turning point came when he got married. Maybe it was when he regained consciousness in that hospital bed. I'd like to think that at least part of it was when he tried to write a political song about "Louie Louie." And succeeded. Because the socio-economic-spiritual-political songs he wrote on last year's The Devil You Know, and delivers here again in a somewhat too dry, acoustic setting, are so genuine and true that they go all the way past Dylan and Prine, and verge on Mark Twain territory.
While the absence of the sympathetic arrangements and skillful playing found on that studio album may initially put you off of these live, solo cuts, by the time he gets to "I'm sure she is/But that's not all she is" in the fourth song, you'll be as deeply into the narrative groove as he is. And if you aren't, I have to wonder if you'll continue as a Todd Snider fan. Because these days, being a Todd Snider fan means being able to sort out the multiple definitions of the word "we" in "We can't just kill what we don't understand", rather than being able to recite all the words to "Beer Run."
Note: The last lyrics he sings to this small Nashville crowd, some of whom he inevitably knows, are "You're all that matters/To me."

With stunning album-length explorations of jazz and 1950s acoustic skiffle and a country-rockabilly collaboration with Linda Gail Lewis behind him, Van Morrison continues exploring classic country with compelling reinterpretations of standards from the 1950s to the 1970s. He reaches back over half a century for Hank Williams Sr.'s "Half As Much," "Your Cheatin' Heart," and "My Bucket's Got a Hole in It" and Webb Pierce's landmark honky-tonk hits "Back Street Affair," "There Stands the Glass," and "More and More." Moving to the mid-'60s, he capably explores George Jones's "Things Have Gone to Pieces" and Connie Smith's "Once a Day." The 1970s are his limit, however, as he probes Rodney Crowell's "'Til I Gain Control Again." Three Morrison originals blend nicely into this mix, as do two non-country favorites: Chuck Willis's "What Am I Living For" and a gleeful spin on Blue Lu Barker's 1938 jazzy, single-entendre favorite "Don't You Make Me High." Recorded in Ireland with uncluttered hard-country backing, Pay the Devil reiterates Morrison's own musical diversity and flair for making any song his own. --Rich Kienzle

About the Artist
There's a reason they call Van Morrison the Belfast Cowboy. Now with Morrison's latest album Pay The Devil, that good reason has resulted in a great new album. From the start, the deeply soulful sounds of the American South helped inspire Morrison to one of the most enduring and consistently impressive careers in music history. For forty-years, he's drawn upon the greats of Rhythm & Blues to create his own distinctive and influential blend of soul and Celtic influences. On Pay The Devil, Morrison explores his inner cowboy more than ever before -- recording a compelling mix of his favorite country compositions as well as a few equally strong originals that more than earn their place among such distinguished company. And just as Morrison's longtime hero Ray Charles did once upon a time on Modern Sounds in Country & Western Music, Morrison has taken some enduring, endlessly relevant songs of the south and somehow made them all his own. Those who have been following Van Morrison for years might praise him for his remarkable range in taking this turn down a country road. Recent years have seen Morrison cover the musical waterfront with recordings that touch upon traditional Irish music, jazz, skiffle and other musical forms that move him. But the secret of Morrison's ongoing artistic success is that he has never followed fashion in the slightest. Rather he continues to be a working musician who simply follows his own soulful muse wherever it may lead him. The outstanding, plainspoken songs on Pay The Devil range from the familiar, like Morrison's impressive take on Hank Williams' "Your Cheating Heart" and Webb Pierce's "There Stands The Glass" to somewhat less familiar Country & Western gems. It is a true tribute to Morrison's genius as a vocal stylist that he can take a song as often covered as "Half As Much" -- recorded over the years by everyone from Hank Williams to Patsy Cline and Emmylou Harris - and manage to make it feel new all over again. He does so by clearly connecting with country's timeless themes of love and loss and life, sin and salvation. Through it all, Morrison proves to be one hell of a fine, subtle straight-ahead country singer in the grand tradition of George Jones. Indeed, one of Pay The Devil's many highlights is Morrison's take on "Things Have Gone To Pieces," a dark gem written by Leon Payne that Jones made famous. Then there's "What Am I Living For?" -- an old Chuck Willis number. Listen to how ! Morrison delivers Rodney Crowell's early masterpiece "Til I Gain Control Again" -- one of the more recent copyrights included here and a standout effort on an album full of them. Yet even among such high standards, Morrison's originals here are among the highlights - including "Playhouse" a sly, infectious song that one wishes the Genius of Soul had lived to record, and the title track - a reflection on making the devil's music and a fine reminder that "one man's meat is another man's poison" To listen to Pay The Devil, one might naturally assume that Morrison has traveled to Nashville and handed himself over to Music City's finest players and producers. Remarkably, Morrison has done nothing of the sort - recording Pay The Devil in Ireland with the same wonderful musicians who have been playing with him for years now with exceptional results. Even more remarkably, it turns out that Morrison has never even been to Nashville before. Regardless of that, he has made a classic album that sounds like Nashville at its finest and stands as tall as anything that's come out of the town in recent years. Pay The Devil is not just great country music, it's great music - whatever country you happen to come from. We've come to expect no less from Morrison. Finally, the Belfast Cowboy has come home.
Album Description
Pay The Devil is comprised of 15 tracks; three of these are originals and 12 are covers of some of Van Morrison's favorite classic country songs, including 'Your Cheatin Heart', 'Things Have Gone To Pieces' and 'Big Blue Diamonds'. Lost Highway. 2006.
Customer Reviews:
Best singer of my lifetime........2007-06-05
As the musician who, since possibly Stephen Foster or Souza, who best understands time, Morrison has always been a roots musician. On first hearing him in the sixties, I thought "this is what the doo-wop musicians were aiming at." His work with the Chieftans, and other roots musicians in other genres made me feel the same.
This album is no exception. Morrison has joined by great musicians, but he is leading the pack. Firmly in the pocket when he wants to be, shifting slightly out of it when he needs to. People who say he's not being as inventive "taking ownership" etc., are right. He doesn't need to. THe songs are great. The originals are great, Morrison is great. He owns any song he puts his immense presence behind.
Great Old School Country.......2007-05-12
I love this album. It is great old school country with the Van Morrison flare.
I Liked it But It's Not Traditional Van.......2007-04-07
I really enjoyed this music even though it's not traditional Van. I first saw him perform many of these tunes on a PBS Austin City Limits. If you're looking for a remake of Astral Weeks you need to realize it's been 40 years and Van is a different person than when he wrote that music. What I find interesting about the music on this CD is the connection between Celtic music and Country Western, especially in the use of the violins. The musicians backing him are awesome and Van ads a special element to these tunes with his classic voice. As a previous reviewer commented it took me twice through to really catch on with the music. Now I can't get it out of my head.
Vandalized.......2007-01-10
Sorry Van, you wasted my hope and my money. I was banking on your raw quality and mellow empathy to these classic western tunes, you didn't deleiver. I'll keep the CD to be a part of my collection, but it won't be played again and it may be more valuable as a rare, limited edition than a prized Van Morrison effort. The Devil's been paid.
Best Country Record of 2006?.......2007-01-04
The CD is fantastic! The choice of songs was superb and Van Morrison really does them well. If you are a fan of old country, you will enjoy this record. Superb!

Argentina-born, California-based Gustavo Santaolalla helped shape the rock en Español movement by producing Mexican bands Molotov and Café Tacuba , and Colombian singer Juanes. In the late 1990s he made a switch to soundtracks, working on well-received albums for Amores Perros and The Motorcycle Diaries. His instrumental contributions to Ang Lee's tale of two cowboys in love are acoustic guitar-based and, let's face it, a bit on the sonic-wallpaper side.
The vocal tracks, on the other hand, are uniformly lovely, even if the selection of interpreters falls on the predictable side. Linda Ronstadt, Steve Earle, Willie Nelson, and Mary McBride on the soundtrack to a contemporary Western? What a shock! Still, they're all wonderful and Santaolalla wrote at least a couple of classic-sounding country ballads ("A Love That Will Never Grow Old," sung by Emmylou Harris, and "No One's Gonna Love You Like Me," sung by Mary McBride). And don't miss Teddy Thompson and Rufus Wainwright's sweet cover of Roger Miller's 1964 "King of the Road." --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
Axe Rufus Wainwright, and it would be 5 stars.......2007-06-13
This album is a mixture of the instrumental theme, which is incredibly beautiful and haunting, and some very solid country songs. I was surprised by how good the other songs were (you still have to like country music, though). There are only two songs that I don't like at all, and those are the two by Rufus Wainwright - one a cover of "King of the Road" (originally by Roger Miller). They are great demonstrations of him at his most nasal and whiny. It sounds like he is a French guy holding his nose and singing too slow. It's too bad, because they are good songs otherwise. I guess if you like him, you're golden; but I can't stand these versions. Fortunately, the rest of the disc is really good.
Yes, it's one of the best albums I own.......2007-06-03
I listened to it over and over and over last year. Such quality all 'round.
Brokeback Mountain.......2007-05-13
The product is what I expected. It arrived on time and in the condition advertised.
A matter of taste..........2007-05-08
I didn't really pay a lot of attention to the music in the film, except for in the most intense of scenes. Perhaps this is why I was so, completely, disappointed with this soundtrack. I felt that if it did even half of what the film did for me it would be a worthy buy. My friends, this soundtrack is shat. It's mostly country and folk, which I am plainly not into. If you like these things then check this out - if not, turn away.
Perfect, just like the movie..........2007-04-21

Disappointment.......2007-01-06
I love the dave Matthews Band, but this solo album doesn't live up to expectations. I find it boring and lacking soul. I expected to like it and am disappointed I don't.
Pfft.......2006-12-21
With the ill-advised miserable solo song "Gravedigger" (and its accompanying quick-cut video of equally miserable images) Dave Matthews essentially brought his career to a screeching halt, at least for those who aren't diehard fans. What on earth was he thinking? "Grrravedigger..." Who wants to listen to this dismal whining more than once?
Great solo Disc.......2006-10-01
A Disk you can listen all the way though. My wife and I used So Dam Lucky as our wedding song. We Love It...
Most Consistently Excellent Dave Matthews Offering.......2006-09-12
I'm a fan of Dave and his band. This collection is probably the most even, consistently good "whole album" listening experience in Dave's body of work. Every CD of his has gems that shine brightly, but from the first track, Dave takes you into the post "Busted Stuff anger" reflection. And I can't yet decide which version of Gravedigger I love the most. I first fell in loved with the acoustic version as the strings come up during the second verse and just grow into the rest of the song, through the "Ring around the rosie" bridge. But then there's the powerful "electric" version of the song that grows into a DM growling wail at the end. I'm glad they're both on the disc.
"Save Me" is an excellent example of Dave's trademark ability to combine the spiritual and the sensual-thumping into a smokey bit of audio divinity. "Stay or Leave" gets a lot of play on the acoustic rock satellite radio channels I listen to, and deservedly so. All of these songs benefit from the textured and expert percussion that Dave's band supplies and the ability Dave has to work the upper range of his voice ("Oh," and especially "An' Another Thing") as well as the lower ("Trouble").
The minimal, haunting "Some Devil" title track is another favorite of mine. Just Dave and a somewhat percussive, low electric guitar.
I could go on and on. Don't take my word for it. Look at the other thoughtful reviews and get this CD.
