For a long time, Merle Haggard has been best known for his least-important music--"Okie from Muskogee" and its sequels, "The Fighting Side of Me" and "Are the Good Times Really Over." All three of these patriotic novelty songs are included on this four-CD box set, but they are dwarfed by the riches around them. Songs such as "Running Kind," "If We Make it Through December," and "I Started Loving You Again" eschew sloganeering to draw powerful portraits of working-class folks pulled in one direction by a longing for footloose freedom and in another by economic realities and emotional ties. The catchy directness, the poetic vernacular, and Haggard's baritone purr mark those numbers as examples of country music at its finest. As good as country music gets.......2007-03-24

When you think of traditional country music, few names command the respect Merle Haggard does. There are perhaps dozens of Merle compilations, but I find "Down Every Road" is arguably the best showcase of his versatile career.

It's amazing to see how far Haggard's career progressed from the early 60's to now; this collection covers the vast majority of his hits through 1994 or so, with a few minor exceptions ("Movin' On" isn't included, for example). It's all here. All the stories that make country music great: drinkin', trains, love gained, love lost, good-boy-gone wrong, etc. The thing is, Merle's lived most of this. The listener can almost feel the pain in his voice in a lot of this material, and it's completely believable. I guess that's why I like him so much, and one of the reasons he's been so well received over the course of his lengthy career. He's a road warrior, a survivor. I would recommend this collection to any real country music fan, but it's priceless for true Hag fans. Worth every penny.

I got this set for my Dad after he made me a compilation of Merle's classics. I listened to it, and while it was the same songs, they weren't how I remebered them. I asked Dad where he got them and he said from a more recent best of package. Apparently, due to record label rights, they had to have the vocals re-recorded for legal purposes. So instead of hearing Merle when his voice was still young with more range, instead of the older, more mature tones of his current vocals. Don't get me wrong, I love the recent stuff too, but this is a great collection when he was at his best.

Pure Country.......2005-09-04

I've been a country music fan dang near all my life. There's only one time that I was willing to put out over $40 (which is a lot of money to a workin' man like me) for a box set of music and this is it. That was about a year ago, and I have absolutely no regrets. They don't call Merle the "working man's poet" for nothing. Just pop one of these CDs in -- sit back, and listen closely to the words. He sings about what life really boils down to -- the hurtin', the lovin', the laughin', the cryin', the dyin', and in a way that just soaks into your soul. Just listen to the words and emotions behind "The Fugitive", "Branded Man", "The Bottle Let me Down", and "Silver Wings" for example. Merle's isn't just successful at singing heart-tugging songs, he can also belt out "get up and boogie" songs with the best of them -- songs like "Workin' Man Blues" and "Stay a Little Longer". Out of these 100 songs within these 4 CDs, there's not one bad song in the lot. You don't have a music career that spans decades if you're not touching a bunch of folks out there -- and Merle does just that with his heartfelt, believable singing. But, if you're checking out this album, you probably allready know that. Thanks, Merle, for all the great music.

Desert Island .......2004-12-18

If my entire music collection were lost, this would be my first purchase. I had all of Merle's (available) LP's and CD's when this came out, so I bought it for the unreleased tracks. The packaging and sound are wonderful. As this was a Capitol release, they went heavy on their own stuff (and also left off quite a few Capitol hits for obscure early album cuts). Quite a few essential Epic cuts are missing, and if I were to make a four CD Haggard set, I would balance it more with later hits. That being said, this is a fantastic set of music, and shows why Merle is the best all-around artist ever. As far as the combination of singing, songwriting, and musicianship goes (and he's great live),no one (including Hank) can touch the Hag. Buy this and see why most of the "singers" you hear today are imitations (albeit pale ones) of this man.

Buy this with the Original Singles Collection by Hank Williams, and then throw in the theme cds by Haggard called Hurtin, Cheatin, Drinkin and Prison. If you can afford it get the Complete Hank Williams.

We have heard Marcia Ball in person twice and were blown away by her performances both times. This live CD helps us relive those great evenings. She is such a talent, unlike some performers we have loved in person and not liked as well on CD. This CD proves that listening to her is about as good as the live show. Her diversity, from La-ti-da, to Louisiana 1927, makes for a great combination of songs. We discovered, also, on a long trip home from the airport in the middle of the night, that this CD is great for keeping a very sleepy driver awake! We highly recommend it.

It is hard to say this is the best she has done because Marcia rocks the house down on everything she does. "Down the Road" is full of down home music with hits such as: Down the Road - Louisiana 1927 - Crawfishin.
Its safe to say, buy it, listen to it and relish it. This will truly liven up a party when you plug this one in!

I was hoping this live album would bring out all the energy Marcia brings to live performances and to a great extent it did. I find her studio albums burdened with ballads and just not the same as watching her pound the keyboard and sing. This is a generally consistent album of her best material, except for the puppy dog song but I may be in a small minority on that. GR

A little piece of home.......2006-02-25

The first time I heard Marcia Ball was in downtown Dallas at the Farmers Market eating breakfast with my husband. A gentleman was playing music for those eating on the outside court. The music was so great that after we finished eating we went up to him to find out who that artist was and needless to say it was Marcia Ball...we enjoyed it them and still enjoy it. I love to listen to it after a hard day at work...it sooths my soul and brings a back a little piece of home life.

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

Van Morrison's childhood was steeped in American music, in part because he grew up the son of a rabid collector of classic jazz and R&B records. Morrison's infatuation with the music understandably led to the raucous, blues-rooted performances of Them and his early solo records, but it also inspired his long, oft-misunderstood journey to find music more spiritually and geocentrically rooted. This inviting, if typically restive, collection brings the singer full circle, suggesting you can indeed go home again--and that your life's journey just might make you appreciate it with new eyes. Thirteen of these tracks are Morrison originals, though they have a warm, almost subliminal familiarity. Good-natured shuffles like the title track, "Choppin' Wood," and "Hey Mr. DJ" have a nostalgic edge that sharpens considerably on the jaunty "Whatever Happened to PJ Proby?," where Morrison grouses, "Nothin' much to relate to anymore / 'less you wanna be mediocre." But there's considerably more than simple blues redux on Morrison's agenda, as his graceful ballad "Steal My Heart Away" and sublime covers of Hoagy Carmichael's "Georgia" and Acker Bilk's "Evening Shadows" (originally an instrumental but now with lyrics by Morrison and an evocative, signature clarinet solo from Bilk himself) prove. It's my last day teaching this class and that's sad mostly....school's out. First graders are now second coming.

So I'm listening to Van as I put the crayons away in color cups, organize for summer school. Clean, sweat, think and daze. Feeling the usual remorse, regret, loss and a sense of relief, joy, wonder and exhaustedly realize this is the last time I'll need to say...it's been a very tough time teaching through the nightmare of adopting the canned scripts NCLB reform shoved down my throat.. Because the fight is largely over. "They" won and the kids are going to be disadvantaged like I never thought possible, at least mine are....ah...it hurts to go there. Watch Congress reauthorize and be proud they'll magically get a "growth model" while Kennedy tests his children's, no, that's our children's so called progress working their behinds off, tests more and better-what he wants is 'rigor'. Hope not mortis... Great master plans from the Bushes et al seem to lead us to the places like where I am...in a ghetto with less, now way less. So what's new. Oh, yeah, call it progressive political vision. Van's CD is about a good a tonic as I know right now today. I think he'll forgive the rant. I really do. Pour it over my heart and soul. Sylvia and I are singing.

So...this is a wonderful set of songs if you aren't 25 anymore, except on the inside. And you wish love was real, and you wish you had someone that knew. It's a collection of someone singing to the way it is, or at least we mythologize it is. But I'm so tired all I can do is say, go listen yourself for you. iTunes at the least. I love Indian Summer, Down the Road, Steal My Heart Away, The Beauty of the Days Gone By. And so many..

I'm headed back home again. It's a deep reach to find enough love to do this work, find the resources and the ways to sustain believing in anyone or anything. Especially this year, especially this year. Thanks for the tunes, Van.

Does Van ever make a bad album? .......2007-03-10

I dont know what else to say in here that is not already covered, only this is now my 9th Van CD on my ipod. while allot of all bleeds together in "sameness" it just works. I use shuffle and my pod is on most of the day, so this kind of music along with classical opera and bluegrass just seems to work great for all day listening.

swinging r & b from van the master........2007-02-20

two wonderful slow numbers, "the beauty of the day's gone by," and "georgia on my mind," and thirteen swinging uptempo r & b treats make up this fine recording. the mood is relaxed and easy, with plenty of guitar, horns, and hammond organ along the way to provide a soulful groove on which van's singular voice can ride. released in 2002 this is one of mr morrison's strongest releases of the twenty-first century. long may he record.

Solid classic Van.......2006-04-09

The album opens with the title track, setting the tone as one of reflection on days gone by. This mellow mid-tempo song with intricate instrumental flourishes is followed by the buoyant Meet Me In The Indian Summer, a catchy love song.

Steal My Heart Away is also a love song, but slower and more soulful with evocative imagery, Hey Mr DJ is a chugging pop number with lovely backing vocals and a bit of Morrison's wordless vocalising, whilst Talk Is Cheap is a slow bluesy song about the pitfalls of fame.

The tuneful ballad What Makes The Irish Heart Beat is a definite highlight of the album, infused with Celtic soul. All Work And No Play is a pleasant enough pop ditty and the next one, Whatever Happened To PJ Proby is really interesting as he references various obscure British singers from the 1960s.

One of my favourites is the stirring nostalgic ballad The Beauty Of The Days Gone By with its gorgeous melody and poetic lyrics. I also love the tuneful and lilting Only A Dream. The last song, Fast Train with its appealing organ and harmonica made me think of Arlo Guthrie's Last Train, but is nowhere near as heart-breaking and intense. And that is what I miss on this album: Van's intensely devotional moments.

Down The Road displays all the various styles of the artist, like R & B, rock and his Irish soulfulness but sticks mostly to the middle of the road. The songs are mostly good and sometimes great as in the aforementioned tracks. Down The Road is really a 5-star album, but measured against Van Morrison's vast body of musical genius, it comes in at four.

I have them all........2005-09-14

I have been listening to Van Morrison since I stumbled upon a copy of "Tupelo Honey" when I was 18 and it blew me away. He never really made a bad album, but you can spend you money safely here. I keep waiting for another "No Guru" or "Astral Weeks" and this is not that but it is better than 99% of the music out there. Keep it coming Van!

Excellent album!.......2007-04-09

This is an excellent album! It was a modest hit in the US when it was released in 1973 (reaching number 26 on the Billboard album chart) and produced a minor hit single "Isn't It About Time" (which peaked at 56 on the Billboard singles chart). Both the album and song should have been bigger hits!

Further down the road but still worth owning.......2006-12-30

Technology has moved down the road since the original analog tracks were recorded. Though some tracks on this CD suffer a bit from the conversion to digital format, the clarity and lack of LP pops are a joy! Well worth owning and a great update to a well worn LP.

This poor record got unfairly lost in the shuffle of CSN, solo Stills releases....and unfairly compared with Manassas first brillant record.....this one is pretty damned good too......more of the same, and more songs from Hillman....Stills lets more of the band shine on this one......and who doesn't like Joe Walsh playin' slide on a track!

So if you like Stills, or Hillman (burrito/byrds sound) and you liked the first Manassas record........go for this one.....its better than Stills later 70's stuff like Illegal Stills and Stills and right by you. Enjoy it and don't think to hard just enjoy.

Forget the Reviews -- This Rocks.......2006-04-24

Like Jaws II, this follow-up Manassas album had the unenviable task of being preceded by an absolute classic. By comparison, I agree the first one is the superior product.

But really give this a listen and you will be rewarded -- "Pensamiento" is a joyous Cuban-inflected fusion track, "So Many Times" is classic harmonic Hillman, and "Down the Road" is an anthem, with Joe Walsh adding searing slide guitar. Indeed, Down the Road is one of my favorite Stills tracks.

"Do You Remember the Americans" is topical and well-meaning, and "Rollin' My Stone" brings the album to a close in hard-rocking fashion.

In sum, a great band working on Manassas leftovers is still a great band making great music. I'd give this one another chance.

A strong set.......2005-12-24

DOWN THE ROAD often receives the disdain usually dealt those who must follow a great performance (in this case, the first MANASSAS album), and that's a shame -- it's a solid set of good songs, and only suffers because it is directly compared to its predecessor. This is roughly analogous to comparing ABBEY ROAD to the White Album [properly titled THE BEATLES, but who calls it that?], and about as useful.

Mix this in with the first album and hit the shuffle button, and you'd be hard-pressed to say which songs come from which album. DOWN THE ROAD is not so much a sequel or broadening of MANASSAS as a further delving into the same territory.

Mr. Schmittdiel has done an excellent job of describing DTR's qualities, and Mr. Silberman is quite right in suggesting that MANASSAS is the better album; if you can only afford one, it should be the first. But DOWN THE ROAD is certainly among Stephen's artistically successful albums, and definitely rewards repeat listening (sadly not the case for almost every album he made after this).

In fact, I came upon this Web page in search of a CD to replace my vinyl, worn from 20 years of playing (as is the first album). In my opinion, any Stills fan should get both -- along with his first [STEPHEN STILLS] -- all three are solid albums :-)

As on Another Country (1992) and The Old Plank Road (2002), the venerable Irish acoustic band celebrates the shared sources of Celtic music and America's Appalachian folk/old-timey/bluegrass canon. That several of the guest players are veterans of all three sets lends a note of continuity to the palpable joy of discovery that fairly leaps from every track. Highlights are non-stop, but Allison Moorer's doom-laden vocal on "Hick's Farewell" raises goose-flesh, as does Emmylou Harris' "Lambs In The Greenfield," while Don Williams' treatment of an old Scottish ballad, "Wild Mountain Thyme," reveals a sturdy, unsentimental masculinity. The Chieftains are generous hosts throughout, often taking a back seat so their collaborators may shine. A poignant note: harpist and multi-instrumentalist Derek Bell, a longtime Chieftains member, died just after the Plank Road sessions were completed. That these were destined to be among his final recordings makes them all the more worthy of treasuring. --Christina Roden

Here we go again. This time around, I think the CD is highlighted by one of country's greatest living legends and one of bluegrass music's greatest young acts. That would be "Wild Mountain Thyme" by gentleman Don Williams and "The Raggle Taggle Gypsy" by Nickel Creek. There are some great pipe tunes on this one as well. Once again we have some themes which seem to exude Appalachia whereas others have a "Northerly" feel. Highly recommended.

Chieftains Merge Irish & Bluegrass Influences.......2005-03-22

This follow-up to 2002's DOWN THE OLD PLANK ROAD doesn't deviate from that album's successful formula of combining traditional Irish music with bluegrass and old timey country music.

Highlights include Tim O'Brien's foot-stomping rendition of "Shady Grove, John Prine's plaintive "The Girl I Left Behind," Ricky Skaggs' "Talk About Suffering/Man of the House" and Nickel Creek's performance of the centuries' old "Raggle Taggle Gypsy."

Several of these songs were not originally recorded for this album. "Fishmerman's Hornpipe/The Devil's Dream," which features the lightning fingers of Doc Watson, was recorded in 1980-81. Four other tracks (9-12) were recorded in 1992, presumably during the sessions for the 1992 release ANOTHER COUNTRY.

Overall, this is a thoroughly satisfying album from Ireland's best ambassadors of Irish music. [Running time 55:06] HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Way Down The Old Plank Road.......2003-12-09

Both "Plank Road" CDs are great for fans of Irish/Old Time/Country music.
Highlights on this one, for me, include John Hiatt's version of the Uncle Dave Macon song Jordan is a Hard Road, and Doc Watson with the Chieftains.
The Nickle Creek version of Raggle Tagle Gypsy doesn't do it for me -- I've been spoiled by listening to the Planxty version for years.
All in all a great listen, with an interesting historical connection.

I found the first cd by the chieftains recorded in Nashville to lack a cohesiveness. It also, in my opinion, suffered from the excess of having a 10+ minute instrumental song at the end that seemed to drone on and on. This one "works" better for me and is entertaining and enjoyable from start to finish. An excellent variety of collaborating artists with everything from the country baritone of Don Williams to the beautiful vocal instrument of Emmylou Harris's voice. Highly recommended for Chieftain and country (real country) music fans alike.

I was surprised that there was no mention of the passing of Derek Bell in the liner notes of the cd. Perhaps a tribute to him will be made in an upcoming cd.

The Chieftains turn out another winner.......2003-09-21

Well, it looks like those old Irish rogues The Chieftains have managed to do it again - take two different but interrelated musical styles, find the best performers in the genre, and pair them up with their group to create a unique and oftentimes brilliant sound. With this take we return to the connection between Irish traditional and American country and bluegrass music, just like their last album, "Down the Old Plank Road" was - in fact, "Further Down the Old Plank Road" is the recording sessions they didn't have room to cram into the first one. And while with some other artists this would seem like an attempt to make money off of work they'd already done, in this case the work is just as high in quality as the first album was, therefore earning itself the merit of being well worth the surprisingly modest price tag.
This album has a wide variety of both Irish and American pieces on it, opening with the old standard "The Raggle Taggle Gypsy", performed with Nickel Creek to stunning results. Next comes the American folk song "Jordan is a Hard Road to Travel" with John Hiatt, and if it weren't for Hiatt's superbly raspy old-time voice this would pass as a traditional dance from back over on the Emerald Isle. Following this upbeat tune comes a mournful Southern song with Allison Moorer, the solemn "Hick's Farewell", her voice backed quietly by Paddy and his boys and attended to by the sorrowful wailing of Matt Molloy's flute. "Shady Grove" with Tim O'Brien has lyrics that are very American in nature but a tune that, like much of the material on this album, could have come right out of Ireland itself.
The incomparable John Prine accompanies The Chieftains on "The Girl I Left Behind", employing his once-twangy but now warmer and deeper voice to a song that sounds like a lot of his other work - not a bad thing, mind you. The following set with Jerry Douglas contains the Irish tunes "Rosc Catha Na Mumhain" and "The Wild Irishman", both played superbly, as well as an unexpected treat - "The Arkansas Traveler", undoubtedly one of the best-known old-time folk songs that transforms the track from a set of Celtic tunes to a sort of Irish hoedown, as the liner notes put it. After that comes a superbly sad/sweet Irish song, "Lambs in the Greenfield", played with a past Chieftains collaborator Emmylou Harris, to lovely results. In the space of Band 8 Joe Ely shows up with his roguishly rambling voice, singing two tunes that suit his demeanor well - "The Moonshiner" and "I'm a Rambler".
Country legend Don Williams turns up on this album to sing that beautiful old Irish ballad, "Wild Mountain Thyme" with his virtually-trademark deep country voice that gives the classic air a new dimension. Chet Atkins plays on "Chief O'Neill's Hornpipe", which if memory serves was actually recorded back on The Chieftains' first bluegrass/country endeavor, "Another Country", and could be considered the single cheap shot on the album, even though the collaboration is still very high quality. Band 11 contains Carlene Carter's "Bandit of Love" from 1980, sung by the composer and The Chieftains' own "The Cheatin' Waltz", the former taking up a much longer time slot than the latter. The famous Nitty Gritty Dirt Band gives a spirited performance of "The Squid-Jiggin' Ground", a lively little song rather peculiar in subject but catchy in tune, its words having been set to the Irish Larry O'Gaff's Jig by immigrants to Newfoundland, Canada.
Patty Loveless delivers a wailing rendition of "Three Little Babes", an anguish-filled variant of an old English air sung in the Appalachian Mountains. On track 14 Doc Watson plays a sprightly hornpipe popular on both sides of the Atlantic, "The Fisherman's Hornpipe", followed by another famous tune, "Devil's Dream." Long-time friend of The Chieftains Ricky Skaggs lays down another soulful Southern song, "Talk About Sufferin'", written in the gospel singing tradition of the American southeast. The final tune, "The Lily of the West", has been sung by The Chieftains on a past album, "The Long Black Veil", in collaboration with Mark Knopfler. But sung here to a different tune with somewhat altered lyrics by Rosanne Cash, Johnny "The Man in Black" Cash's daughter, the song takes on an entirely different feel, to my ears less appealing than Knopfler's rendition but still enjoyable.
All in all, "Further Down the Old Plank Road" is anything but an attempt to administer one last whack to a long-dead horse, to paraphrase the liner notes of "Water from the Well" (also a great album). Even though American music is the predominate style on the album, it's still a real treat for Chieftains fans and a great listen for any fan of traditional Irish, bluegrass, or country music, or any of the performers above for that matter. Highly recommended!

Trailer Park Musical a good hear........2007-05-15

This musical is a good laugh and can bring up the spirits of any musical theatre buff. The voices are excellent and they showcase a great characterization of the personages represented in the show. It is a CD that entices the listener to go ahead and get tickets to the show and go see it. Also a personal acquaintance of mine Leslie Kritzer does a phenomenal job on the CD.

A Tornado of Fun!.......2007-04-10

This seems to be my year for finding recordings of lesser known musicals that are just awesome. It started with buying Zombie Prom, and continues with The Great American Trailer Park Musical!

But this show is just all-out fun! The tunes are catchy (I got one of them running through my head, right now) and the lyrics are quite clever. The three main ladies become the Greek chorus, telling us about life in their trailer park, Armadillo Acres, located in Starke, Florida. The show then focuses on one agoraphobic housewife who hasn't left her trailer in 20 years, and her husband who has had enough and starts fooling around with a stripper who is on the run from her boyfriend. Sound crazy? It is! And a whole lotta fun!

Yes, there are some explicit lyrics, but nothing excessive. So do yourself a favor and give this album a listen. You might just want to move into your own "manufactured home" before you know it.

One Of My Favorite New Musicals In Years.......2007-01-31

When I tell people about this show, I tell them it is far better than it had to be... With a title like that, the audience draw is already built in, but with great songs and a very clever story (without ever being offensive or degrading) this musical is a fun hit. And while it is not the old-school "Okalhoma" style musical, there are a lot of musical niceties about the show - layered melody lines, tight harmonies and clever clever phrases and lyrics. I fully recommend it.

The show (and Recording) ROCKS.......2006-09-26

The whole point of theatre, even in a tongue-in-cheek satire like this one, is to have some sense of truth. The "Great American Trailer Park Musical" completely hits the target dead-on. With it's ridiculous pop culture references, use of white trash musical pastiche (honky tonk country, corporate rock, wedding disco, and the like), and general use of bad taste in a visual (and audio) aesthetic, the show is one loaded joke that never tires. And the over the top performances, all grounded in this evident truth, provide an evening of Laugh after Laugh - more so than similar pieces like "Urinetown" and "Altar Boys".
Sure the language, for those who have expressed concern in above reviews, can be strong at times. But never is the language used in a matter of fact fashion. For those who have ever even remotely hung around a trailer park (as it quite Clearly states in the TITLE) or even around those who inhabit a Sociologists Jackpot of research, You know that crude humor and strong language are staple of the norm.
"Oklahoma" and "Cats" this show is not. However, "Great American Trailer Park Musical" is a definite piece to listen and pay attention to. With the general climate of new musicals to be either repackaged musicals from movies (Wedding Singer, Hairspray, Footloose, etc) or jukebox musicals (Mamma Mia, All Shook Up, Hot Feet, etc) - there is a new genre that is emerging, the "in-joke" musical. Trailer Park, Altar Boys, Spelling Bee, and title of show are examples of this. These are shows that blur satire and exaggeration with real life all the while dealing in a specific subject matter.
"Trailer Park" is a hip, new and exciting piece of music theatre, even if not groundbreaking. For those who like to play it safe may I suggest the "20 Great Broadway ShowStoppers" CD - all songs are from 1932 to 1949. You will be sure no profane language will infect you there.

Now that bluegrass is (again) momentarily cool, leave it to the Chieftains to (again) plunge an all-star country cast into the Celtic wellsprings of old-time music, just as they did 10 years ago with 1992's Another Country. It's no surprise that the Chieftains can handle the rapacious rhythms of a hot fiddle tune; whether they can go toe-to-toe with the likes of Tim O'Brien, Béla Fleck, Ricky Skaggs, and Del McCoury is another matter. Rest assured they can, and they even coax some inspired jamming from Earl Scruggs--who sounds like he has something to prove on "Sally Goodin"--and a chilling vocal from Alison Krauss on "Molly Ban," the Celtic equivalent of "Fair and Tender Maidens." The Chieftains' only miscue comes in wasting Vince Gill's talents on a busily arranged "Dark as a Dungeon." While this set will likely appeal more to fans of contemporary Irish music than to hard-core twang fans, anyone who loves acoustic roots music will find these collaborations refreshing, if not down-right bracing. --Roy Kasten

Well, sorta...

When people hear "Chieftains" they're thinking Irish, Gaelic..but BLUE GRASS? Actually it's not a stretch at all considering that Irish folk music played a major role in the creation of American folk music, Blue Grass (Tenessee, Kentucky)--and via Blue Grass to Country & Western. Of course other ethnic flavors are involved including Scottish & colonial British, French, Spanish & African (Gospel, Blues, Jazz.)

To offer a comparison, the soundtrack of "O, Brother, Where Art Thou?" gives a pretty good sampler of Blue Grass, & this CD does the same--but with more songs, more A-List US artists (John Hiatt, Bela Fleck, Earl Scruggs, Vince Gill, Alison Krauss, Lyle Lovetti, Paty Griffin & other greats) resulting in this more artistically cohesive CD.

So where are the Chiefains you might ask? Well, it's true they are more in the studio background than the forefront, but once you realize how effective that the background is, you can enjoy the final result.

Great roots music!!.......2006-04-17

What can I say that hasn't been said already? This is a great CD. The song "Rain and Snow" by the Del McCoury Band is, in my opinion, worth the purchase alone. Other highlights include: "Dark as a Dungeon" by Vince Gill, "Molly Ban" by the always wonderful Alison Krauss, and "Tennessee Stud" by Jeff White. Celtic music is so ethereal whereas bluegrass seems to ground the music and give it that extra folksy feel. The music is passionate and describes lifestyles, especially those of the Appalachians, which weren't always glamorous yet were rich in heritage and pride. Tremendous musical combination!

Take the elegant, sweet vocals of Alison Krauss, and combine them with the crushing instrumental power of the Chieftains, and you have one of the greatest musical collaborations of the last 50 years. Absolutely top-to-bottom brilliance. Highly recommend to anyone who likes bluegrass, traditional folk, Celtic, oxygen, or food! A MUST OWN!

Martina McBride Is a Revelation.......2005-07-23

Excellent, if somewhat eclectic, album, and I wish the Chieftains had been more front and center. But I find the album a consistent delight, with (and to be expected)typically first- rate performances from Gillian Welch, Alison Krauss, Earl Scruggs, Ricky Skaggs, etc. But the revelation for me was Martina McBride's "I'll Be All Smiles Tonight." Where did that come from? She could out-Rhonda Rhonda Vincent when it comes to powerful Bluegrass ballad wailing. I've never been a big McBride fan, but I'd sure be interested in more stuff like this.

There are two types of people in this world: Those who were born Irish and the rest of us who wish we were. [I fall into the latter category.] I have been nurturing a love affair with both bluegrass and Irish music for more than thirty years, and the links between the two genres have never been more evident than on this meeting of the Chieftains and some of the biggest names in bluegrass and country music, including Bela Fleck, Earl Scruggs, Ricky Skaggs, the Del McCoury Band, Alison Krauss, Tim O'Brien and Vince Gill.

Highlights include the instrumentals "Sally Goodin" and the medley of reels, along with Vince Gill's Take on the Merle Travis classic "Dark As a Dungeon" and Gillian Welch & David Rawlings mournful "Katie Dear." The album closes on a rousing note with the 10-minute romp "Give the Fiddler a Dram."

While I have to agree with my fellow reviewers who feel that the Chieftains have been relegated to session player status on this recording, this is a thoroughly satisfying album from start to finish. [Playing Time 54:30] RECOMMENDED

Despite the bluesy bark of Travis Tritt's soulful vocals, his artistry lacks the bite of his outlaw heroes. His first album for Columbia (after a decade with Warner Bros.) finds him once again mixing country tradition with rock dynamics. "Livin' on Borrowed Time" sounds enough like Hank Williams Jr. that it could pass as Bocephus Lite, while the title cut recycles every ramblin'-man cliché from the Allman/Skynyrd school. On "Never Get Away from Me," he offers sound-alike homage to Waylon Jennings (and wife Jessi Colter). For all of Tritt's good-ol'-boy bluster, the bittersweet balladry of "Best of Intentions" and the bluegrass uplift of "It's a Great Day to Be Alive" suggest that he's really a softy at heart, and more than an echo of his influences. --Don McLeese

This is the kind of album that makes hard rockers like me start listening to Honky-tonk and liking it. I, like other reviewers enjoyed the "Modern Day Bonnie and Clyde." video. I mentioned it to my friend, who lives country music. I also happened to mention that one of my favorite country songs happens to be "Here's A Quarter Call Someone Who Cares!". She mentioned that it too was from Travis Tritt. She married a guy that looks just like Travis. She told me that the whole album is one of the best country albums she's ever heard.

I think I have to aggree with her. Every song is strong. I think that Modern Day Bonnie and Clyde is one of the greatest country songs I've ever heard.

Down The Road I Go - The reality of a loner that lives on the road not wanting to "Find grass stains on the bottom of my feet!" He talks of how the girl needs to nail him to the ground because be's born to run.

Livin' On Borrowed Time - Living on the edge, no money to do anything, just surviving paycheck to paycheck.

Best of Intentions - A great balad love song. Tells of how a woman loves him even though he can't "build you a castle". No matter how bad things get, or how badly he does, he's always had the best of intentions. Great hit. Great sound.

It's a Great Day To Be Alive - Just happy with the way things are and living life for what it is.

Love Of A Woman - How the love of a woman is the best thing for a man. How women know them better then they know themselves. How no matter how hard, or wild they are their women are in control.

Never get away from me - Not letting go of the woman that you love. Despite rejection from family. How love can cross barriers and bridge disputes.

Modern Day Bonnie and Clyde - Story of a guy who gets a heck of a lot more then he bargained for picking up a red-headed knock-out. She robs stores, and lands him in trouble. Classic. Billy Bob Thorton stars in this. Travis plays the tow truck driver who shakes his head at the guy for what happened. Classic. Great video.

I wish I was wrong - Wishing that he's seen the truth before it ran him over like a truck. Love is blind and not realizing it.

If The Fall Don't Kill You - Several stories of infidelity. How true love can be distarous is you are not careful.

Just Too Tired To Fight It - Finding the end of loves road and just not really wanting to fight it. Tired of fighting the memories of a love lost and gone.

Southbound Train - The final track is the fastest. It's written with Charlie Daniels and it shows. It's the story of a woman who leaves Bangor Maine for the sun and heat of the south and her new life. Her family didn't want it but she left anyway. She's a "knockdown queenie in a bakini". She drives the guys crazy. Her new life was started by the clickity clack of the southbound train.

This is the type of album that hard rockers can listen to and start to enjoy country. This isn't Haggard, Jennings, or Nelson. He's very successfully put a very hard edge to country and bridged a gap that was popularized by Charlie Daniels.

I recommend this album to any rock fan that wants to broaden their horizons and branch out into country.

Travis Tritt's 2000 album, DOWN THE ROAD I GO, spawned several hits: "Modern Day Bonny and Clyde," about a pair of outlaws (the video featured Billy Bob Thornton); "It's a Great Day to Be Alive," about a former outlaw who looks back on his ruff n rowdy past with a smile; "Love of a Woman," a stand-by-your-man anthem about how men cannot live without their women; and the best of all, Tritt's own "Best of Intentions," about a man who's sorry for not fullfilling his dreams.

But there are other gems on here, such as the rowdy title track and "Livin On Borrowed Time." You've also got "Never Get Away From Me," a simple but enjoyable tribute to Waylon and Jessi. Or "I Wish I Was Wrong," which tests Tritt's superb vocals. The final track, "Southbound Train," is a romping tune of a woman heading to Florida to kick back and cut loose.

DOWN THE ROAD I GO is one of Travis Tritt's best efforts. Though his songwriting doesn't get as much credit on this album as in past records, it is still there--marking Tritt as one of contemporary country's best singer/songwriters. With a powerhouse voice and undeniable outlaw status, Travis Tritt is a legend in the making.

Travis is back on form ! After a couple of mediocre albums, he's back with the kind of music he was born to sing.

Modern Day Bonnie And Clyde is a wonderful song about a man meeting a woman at a truck stop, they further along stop at a store that she robs and they both drive away with the money before getting caught at some motel by the police. If you ever see the video, Billy Bob Thornton and Gwyneth Paltrow play the role of the modern day Bonnie and Clyde.

Another great song, It's A Great Day To Be Alive must be a constant crowd-pleaser with Travis singing how he might get himself a new tattoo, take his Harley for a three-day cruise or even grow a fu-man-chu.

A Chorus Line may be better known, but Dreamgirls was a towering achievement for director Michael Bennett. Loosely based on the Supremes' story, the 1982 musical told a typical show-biz tale of fame, backbiting, and survival. As is often the case for one-night only events, the cast in this concert version (recorded in New York on September 24, 2001) is led by an eye-popping assortment of Broadway powerhouses: Lillias White (The Life), Audra McDonald (Ragtime, Marie Christine), and Heather Headley (Ragtime). McDonald reveals a previously undisclosed comic streak, while Headley confirms her status as a rising star. Reprising the role of Effie Melody White (created by Jennifer Holliday), White belts the classic "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." But the beauty of Dreamgirls is that it's so packed with catchy, Motown-influenced R&B numbers that each lead can sink her teeth into some prime material and get a turn in the spotlight. This was the worst reproduction of Dreamgirls that I ever heard. I was so disappointed the CD went into the garbage. This is one CD that I would not sell to the public because I expect so much and get so little.

Forget about the film sountrack. Get this CD set. And it's far better than the original cast recording which goes lacking. More songs and more everything that makes a live performance just what it is. Live (compared to film where anything can be done to enhance a performance!) -- the energy, the excitement and the performances make this a rare treat for anyone wanting to share in the real DREAM experience.

Isn't a full Broadway revival long over due. But wait: I've heard rumors that a rvial may be "in the works. I certainly hope so. Maybe this time it will receive the Tony award it deserved in the first place.

There is atleast 5 new songs on this album that were not in the movie! These girls kill it I mean they are just amazing singers, and this all live! This is needed for any Dreamgirls fanatic like me! You are gonna love it! Enjoy! love live laugh :)

As a theatre lover, this recording is amazing. I actually prefer this recording to the OBC. Sheryl Lee Ralph is okay, but can't touch Audra's Deena. The first time I heard Ms. White's "And I Am Telling You..", goosbumps all over my body. The only weak cast member in my opinon is Heather Headly. Vocally, she just isn't there. Too much Aida, not enough Dreamgirls. But all in all, a great live recording of a great show.

One Night Only .......2006-07-19

I was lucky enough to attend this One Night Only concert performance of Dreamgirls and it was a night I will never forget!! The cast was brilliant and the cd is as good if not better than the Broadway cast recording because it is the entire show not just the songs. Bravo to everyone involved !!!
