Dynamite hard rock.......2007-04-09

If you like hard rock, power trios, awesome guitar work and just plain great
rock music you should buy this CD. Having said that I would suggest that you do not purchase "While you're down there", it's nothing like the first CD.
The first is classic 70's hard rock. If you like Captain Beyond, Montrose, Bedlam, Armageddon, etc you will not be disapointed.
Snuffy kicks butt and it's a shame he never got the recognition he deserved.
I saw them open for ELP and they were inredibly heavy. Go for it!

as another reviewer indicates, if you can find the 2 CD album with the additional live & out-take cuts, get it instead.

Stray Dog (on this, their first album) was a classic power trio along the lines of Cream or Jimi or Robin Trower or ZZ Top, the latter of which is covered on this set. In turn, Pat Travers covered the song "Tramp" on his album "P.T. Power Trio".

By their second studio album ("While You're Down There") they had added two new members and completely changed their sound, so if you like one you may not like the other.

The guitarist for this group is/was Snuffy Walden, who now does a lot of TV music, but back when this was cut was one heck of an axe-man.

Another reviewer indicated that only Stray Dog and ELP were on Manticore, which is not true. PFM, Keith Christmas, Pete Sinfield, Thee Image, and Hanson (not the "mmm-bop"-ers, but an excellent rock band with funky jazz influences, led by Junior Hanson aka Junior Marvin aka Junior Kerr) were all on Manticore.

Excellent album - .......2006-03-19

The last time that I listened to this album was on Vinyl many years ago. I had sort of given up on replacing it. I was vey happy to find this on CD. The transfer is very good. Not as good as DDD, but the sound is good enough. It is not distraction. Great album - Basically a blues / rock band with excellent songwriting. The only band to record on ELP's Manticore record label other than ELP.

This album is worth owning.

Killer Album but search for 2 CD version on net.......2005-12-24

This CD is killer, great songs, great playing, however, search the net and for a little more money you can find the two CD version which has all these songs plus another ten tracks of songs from their second album, alternate takes, and live cuts. This band, like Moby Grape (from the late 60's) never really made it even tho they put out one of the best rock albums in the 70's. If you like Cream, Mountain, or any of the great power trio's, this is a MUST HAVE CD.

If the review title appeals to you, buy this CD especially for the great vocal/guitar combos as well as fine lyrics on: Dead Stray Dog, New Jersey Women, Riding on a Tall White Horse, Cold White Sheet. There is another issue on Labor Records which is a little cheaper. I grabbed this one when it was listed for $6.00.
