With 20 CDs in the collection, we have classical music for every mood and atime of day.

4 out of 5 stars Would give 5 stars if sound quality where better.......2007-06-30

This Classical collection is one of great length and breadth ,and is well worth purchasing ,if you want an abundance of music at a low price. The sound quality is decent, however it is not great. This set will not provide you with the crisp, clear sound quality of a RCA,CBS or other well known label,so some classical aficionados may not appreciate it much.It all depends on what your looking for ,I guess.

5 out of 5 stars Great collection for a great price.......2007-06-27

I did not expect much in buying this collection, but I was greatly surpeised. There were no reviews of the product at the time, and I bought the collection simply as a sampler of many great piano pieces. Most of the recordings are exquisite and of decent recording quality. This collection was well worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars 20 Fabulous Discs.......2007-06-08

I am surprised that this set has been out for 4 years and nobody reviewed it here yet. This is a lovely and occasionally amazing compilation. I was moved by many of the compositions. I really enhanced my classical music collection with this set. You have so many legends here to enjoy, from Bach to Brahms, Mozart to Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninov, Gershwin, and more. If you love classical piano music and don't already have most of these works then this is a must buy for you. The price may go up, but I was fortunate to cash in on the $17.97 price. Quite a bargain for 20 fabulous discs.

5 out of 5 stars Great Box Set.......2007-06-17

Though you need to purchase "Walk Among Us" to get the best version of several songs, that paired with this box set is all you'll ever need for a complete Misfits collection. I received this as a gift and I am more then pleased. Although I've always loved the Misfits, I rarely could make out the words. Included in this box set are lyrics to every song!!! The pin and the velvet lined coffin box are a sweet bonus.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for Misfits(78'-83') fans. For newcomers, this is the last thing to buy.. A guide to buying Misfits albums........2007-05-02

This box set has nearly everything the Misfits have recorded during their 6 year life span. Die hard fans of the Fits will already have this so this review is not really for you, but for the newer fans or the curious bunch read this with close attention. Do not make this your first purchase. Now do not misinterpret this as a bad review against this box set. It's nearly perfect. But for those who wish to start listening to the Misfits I recommend the purchase of the Misfits' "lost" debut "Static Age". It is a better introduction to the Misfits in terms of musical style and appreciation for the band's "horror" image. Not to mention that the stand alone CD has 3 songs (2 in alternate versions and an unreleased song) that are not released on the box set.

If "Static Age" blows you away and you need to crave your appetite for more Misfits mayhem, then purchase their official debut "Walk Among Us". Again, this is the smart way to go because "Walk Among Us" is not featured in the Box Set (the album is owned by another record label). The album also has the better versions of the songs featured in the box set which Misfits fans generally agree upon. Plus, this album gets a little heavier in terms of musical style than its predecessor "Static Age", which makes it easier to see why you would purchase this second.

If you become a casual fan after these two purchases then you never would have plumped down more money for a box set you "sort of" like. If you fall in love with the music, do not buy anymore individual releases because this Coffin box is for you. You will already have material in your hands that is not in the Coffin and the Coffin will compliment everything else you don't have. Although there will be some repetition since you will end up with two copies of Static age (albeit different copies in that one has static noise that bookends the album and the other has bonus material). There will hardly be any needless repetitions in your collection which will save you time and money. As a result you will have every single song the Misfits have officially released. You'll be the envy of your friends who are just getting into the band like you were when you first heard a Misfits song. Hope this helps new fans because I wish there was a guide like this that would have pointed me in the right direction on what is essential to get and what isn't.

Remember, get:

Static Age 1st;
Walk Among Us 2nd;
The Coffin Box Set last.

Enjoy and bon appetite!

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Fiends.......2007-04-23

No, it's not complete, but yes it is incredible. The coffin is cool, they lyrics are key, the songs are great punk tunes that are as timeless as they are influential, and the entire set is mandatory for anyone who says he or she is a Misfits fan.

In the end, true fans are going to have everything the band has ever put out with every variation. That's a given. For fans who are just starting, however, this may be a bit steep in price, but it is well worth it. Lots of demos, some lives stuff, and the classics. And it still leaves you wanting more.

5 out of 5 stars B.......2007-03-23

LOVE!!!!! A NECESSITY FOR ALL MISFITS FANS. ON TIME DELIVERY. SUPER SERVICE

4 out of 5 stars Good...but not great.......2006-10-12

I dont really see much reason in buying this if you have their other stuff. You need static age for in the doorway anyhow, and you need walk among us cuz its not included here; so theres two cds right there you would have to buy. legacy of brutality is on this set, but the only song good on there is american nightmare, we already have the other songs in better versions. spook city usa is the only song on here that is not on other albums. cd 3 is just a bunch of crappier versions of the great songs we all like. although she is played with a keyboard instead of a guitar which is kinda cool. get static age, walk among us, collection 1 and 2 and maybe legacy of brutality if you want american nightmare and thats all you need. evilive is awesome because you get to hear glenn talk between songs.

Revisionism can be as rewarding as rediscovery; indeed, they often make a compelling duo. Those sentiments drive veteran producer Hal Willner's tribute to pioneering musicologist Harry Smith's documentation and preservation of American folk forms--music that was already an endangered species by the time he originally compiled them for Folkways Records in the early '50s. As he's done on similar tributes to musicians as varied as jazz giants Monk and Mingus, Italian film scoring legend Nina Rota, and songwriters Kurt Weill and Leonard Cohen, Willner puts together a group of musicians as intriguingly eclectic as the vintage songs they're covering. That Smith's own original efforts helped fuel the '60s folk boom that in turn inspired more than a few of the musicians here helps give the collection the warm sensibility of musical traditions coming full circle.

Spread across two CDs and a pair of DVD's are a rich slate of performances captured in Los Angeles, New York, and London in 1999 and 2001, as well as documentary material about Smith's own pioneering efforts that helped inspire them. Beck and Lou Reed spin spare, harrowing takes on blues godfathers Robert Johnson and Blind Lemon Jefferson, respectively, while Elvis Costello, Wilco, Richard Thompson, Steve Earle, Van Dyke Parks, the McGarrigles, and others offer up covers characterized by varying degrees of reverence. But, as is typical of most Willner projects, it's the more unlikely musical pairings here that yield the greatest intrigues, be they Pere Ubu's David Thomas recasting "Fishin' Blues" in his forceful persona or Bill Frisell's distinctive jazz sensibilities--the latter also suffusing Gavin Friday's "Fatal Flower Garden" with ghostly elegance. A welcome sense of playfulness also surfaces throughout, one whose good humor even makes room for a relevant clip from Chris Guest's A Mighty Wind folk mockumentary, as well as amusing recollections by some of the artists influenced by Smith's original musical archaeology. More than merely revering history, this is a collection that cheerfully revels in its reinvention. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very interesting souvenir of a once in a lifetime experience..........2007-04-22

I attended the concert on the first night in LA, from which a majority of the material here was drawn (I actually stuck it out 'til the 2:00 am conclusion!) What drew me to the show is much the same as the appeal of this set - the chance to see 30 or more of your favorite singers and musicians on the same stage (and a few who you could do without), playing songs from what just might be the greatest and most influential compilation (or "mix tape") of all time! At the very least, this is a very nice souvenir of the event. The interviews and backstage/rehearsal footage in the DVD are very illuminating and are ample testimony to the mad genius of Hal Willner (creator/producer).
Some of the performances here are a lot less impressive that my memory of them, while others (David Johansen, Richard Thompson and Elvis Costello, among others) hold up very well. Willner should be commended for showcasing criminally underrated artists like Robin Holcomb and Van Dyke Parks, as well as for pushing some people (like Beck and Beth Orton) out of their comfort zone material-wise, resulting in some very memorable performances. Some of my other favorites here: Sonic Youth (with trombonist Roswell Rudd) burn up the stage on "Dry Bones", David Thomas is an insane genius, Bob Neuwirth, Geoff Muldaur and Steve Earle all individually show they are up to the task.
There were some classic moments from the night I attended that didn't make it to this release, including Garth Hudson's bizarre and amazing "Recessional Music" on the Royce Hall pipe organ, and Daniel Lanois' mini-set of the Anthology's Cajun songs (accompanied by his super-loud electric guitar). The pre-Mighty Wind Folksmen, introducing some much needed perspective, are rightfully represented here. However, not included was their version of "Flashdance," which somehow said it all (the audience were larfing). Also, not to be forgotten was Mary Margaret O'Hara's train wreck version of "Better Things" (which is represented here by a less chaotic version from a different night). It caused a mass exodus - as it was about midnight at that point, a lot of people were probably suddenly remembering they had babysitters or jobs to go to in the morning!
Being a lot more familiar with the original Anthology recordings now than I was prior to the concert, I am probably a lot more critical of these interpretations, some of which are frankly a bit superficial. Also, it is a bit more noticeable, especially on the DVD, which performers hadn't done their homework and learned the songs thoroughly before the show! On the other hand, some of the versions here caused me to have new appreciation for the songs themselves and really focus on the brilliance and bizarreness of the lyrics. A lot of contemporary songwriters could stand to check them out..
On the technical end, the camera work on the DVD is a bit "on the fly" but not too bad considering there was probably very little rehearsal/blocking. Audio-wise, the recording quality is much better than expected (I'm guessing there was a litlle bit of post-production repair, including fixing some fluffed lyrics). The second DVD ("Old Weird America") that delves a bit more into Harry Smith and the origins of the Anthology, has been shown a bit in art house theaters around the country and is almost worth the price of the set by itself.

3 out of 5 stars Some good some not so good.......2007-02-08

Overall worthwhile, although I won't be listening to it often.

5 out of 5 stars David Johansen, take a bow.......2007-02-07

There are many good things in this package, but none better than David Johansen's two mighty contributions, 'Old Dog Blue' and 'James Alley Blues'. He's come a long, long way since the New York Dolls and Buster Poindexter, and it seems to me that he's finally where he should be.

Petra Haden's 'Single Girl' is pretty good as well. But Johansen's performances (both captured on the dvd) are nonpareil. Can't help but feel that of all the artists here, he and Haden are the ones Harry Smith would have recognised at once as belonging to the American tradition he curated.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic--the "folk process" documented!.......2007-01-22

If you are curious about this but are not familiar with the original "Anthology of American Folk Music"--GET IT, and listen. It is like looking back in time, sort of like the Hubble telescope, only we are looking at images from our own human heritage, and perhaps ourselves.

As Hal Willner says, there are pieces you will love and pieces you might not like. But in truth, this is how the artists in this collection interpreted the originals. And even in the ones I was less than enthusiastic about, I saw something, and went back with a greater appreciation of the original. As a result I developed more enthusiasm for the new performance. This is something to be savored over and over.

I had been listening to Folkways LPs and subscribing to Singout! since the early '60s, and aquired the anthology in the early '70s. I had no previous knowledge of many performers in this set. So this was an eye-opener for me. I even read a review of a person, although generally positive, who wondered why "The Folksman" were in this. My answer is, "we perhaps should not take anything too seriously, and what if the gift of life itself is just a joke?"

4 out of 5 stars A nice collection: but a lot less than perfect........2007-01-03

No collection will please everyone. That being said, this one left me a little cold in that the coices about what to include and what to leave out were not the choices I would have made were I producing this collection.
Without going into details and whys - suffice it to say that before buying this set, you need to take a close look at the playlist so that you will not wind up buying something that is appreciably different than what you were hoping it would be.

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

4 out of 5 stars how did i miss this?.......2007-02-19

every year brings not only great new music to the ears, but also great music that was somehow missed when first released. this set of 3 albums recorded between 1980 and 1982 (with plenty of bonus tracks thrown in) is a fantastic batch of punk/post-punk recordings. greg sage is such a talented guitarist i can't believe he flew under my radar for so long. quite a find, this. while i would not rate it quite as highly as i do husker du, it is pretty close; and i would say that all fans of husker du should have this. after 1st hearing this, i purchased a couple of other wipers cds and a solo greg sage effort, as well. everything is excellent. i highly recommend this to punk rockers, post-punk rockers, and all fans of rock and roll in general.

5 out of 5 stars PORTLAND NATIVE SAYS YES TO WIPERS.......2006-07-24

Like Syd Barrett, Greg Sage has been afflicted/blessed with a condition known as synthaesia, the ability to 'see' sounds and 'hear' color. One of the guys from Crackerbash said that the Wipers sound like Portland in the winter. Listen to 'youth of america' and you will know what months of rain and grey skies look/sound like...
One more thing, that guy that said they had no songs is stupid, "Messanger", "Romeo" and "Window Shop.." are standouts among many...

5 out of 5 stars So good...........2006-05-10

A very addictive set of records... Particularily 'Is this Real?' and 'YOA'. It's beautifully flawed stuff: self-romanticized teenager music that takes itself too seriously; but damn, is it awesome.

Very sincere. Honest, sometimes angry and most often naive. Very thoughtful changes, sometimes almost amatuerishly ornate. Oh yeah. And they also rock.

Listen to any of these records once, and I can understand if you aren't blown away. Listen three times, and if you're not madly, hopelessly in love, it's because you have no soul.

3 out of 5 stars all they needed was some great songs.......2005-04-30

of course that's the rub for many good local bands. the wipers were (are?) a very good local band but i had never heard of them before amazon .the reason for that is there are no great songs on this box set. they play great, sound great but nothing is memorable (except maybe the overall guitar driven sound). comparisons to the velvet underground, love or big star are absurd because all those bands had many all time great songs. and that's the main difference between all time greats and very good local bands. great songs. it's what's lacking on this box set. 3 and 1/2 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Just-about-perfect rock.......2005-04-15

So... the Wipers. I'm almost tempted to repeat the obvious - who they influenced, the sad lack of publicity for this work - but I won't.
Instead, what I will say is that this album may be one of the most incredible rock albums you can purchase. It's pure - the guitar is crisp and direct, the rhythm section is unbendingly solid, and the singing is more or less ideal for the tone of the songs. This is rock and roll distilled down to it's basic elements.
Admittedly, it's hard to get the first few spins. One is simply not used to hearing music like this. But, like similar discs - Raw Power by Iggy and the Stooges is the only one that immediately comes to mind - it grows on a person.
The Wipers have created an almost unique piece of work - the alienation of modern man fused with the primal energy of music. It's fascinating to listen to.
I would include Greg Sage on any list of great guitarists.

4 out of 5 stars I'm not a music expert.......2005-08-25

I don't know too much about music. I own over 700 cds, but I don't play music and I don't have much experience with this music. My only point of reference was the ninth symphony, seeing as every other piece in this box set was new to me. It sounds fine, nothing wrong with it as far as I can see.

Now, here's what you'll get in this box set, seeing as Amazon does not give it a description. 40 cds! no joke, you get 40 cds in this box set. It features:
1. Complete symphonies
2. Complete symphonic poems
3. Cello concerto
4. Piano concerto
5. Violin concerto
6. Requiem
7. Stabat Mater
8. Slavonic Dances
9. Complete String quartets
10. Chamber music
11. Piano Works (solo and duet)
12. Rusalka

As far as I can tell, the only things missing are The Spectre's Bride and Jacobin. Seeing as it is 40 cds, i have not had an opportunity to listen to it, however what i have heard i have been quite satisfied with.
