Customer Reviews:
Brighton's finest!.......2006-08-11
BUY THIS CD!!!!!!!!!!
If you're after REAL thrilling pop kicks & haven't heard of POPGUNS, look no further!!!
I wouldn't wanna change a second in these 18 classic pop gems.
For me, these really are CLASSIC tunes. As previous reviewers have stated, Popguns are horribly underrated & forgotten. I'm still waiting for a US independent movie hit featuring some Popguns tunes that will make the world discover this fantastic group. It's bound to happen, believe me...
They had the melodies of The Smiths, the attack & frenzy of the Wedding Present, & the glorious voice of Wendy Morgan, who actually sings like a guy. Her voice is not low & doesn't sound male in any sense, but the way she uses it is very unlike other female singers. The lyrics are very down-to-earth, brilliant little stories about jealousy & escaping suburbia.
I made a "best of POPGUNS" tape 10 years ago, the PERFECT car-driving-cassette & that tape is still the ONLY tape I listen to whenever I visit my parents & have to drive a car to get somewhere. I know them all by heart & can't stop myself singing along for EVERY word, as my sisters kids has learned to live with...
& EVERY time a new song starts, my now 2 ½ year old daughter says "Popgun!!!"...
The only bad thing I can say about this collection is that they could have crammed in a few more songs, there's room for more & Popguns have MORE life-essential tunes, even though they only released 1 album & 6 singles/ep's during their "Midnight Years" (1989 - 1991 - plus a flexi in 1988...).
Their 3 first ep's 9 songs were collected on the FANTASTIC "EUGENIE" CD, & the other 3 ep's were released on cdsingles. This collection takes 8 tracks from the EUGENIE collection, 8 tracks from the 10 track "SNOG" CD & 2 tracks from the XXX ep.
But there's more... Songs like "Those Other Things", "Where Do You Go?", "In My Head", "I'm Spoiling Everything", "Crazy", "Gesture" & "Over Your Head" are also essential for the true pop fan.
4 years after SNOG, in 1995, another album - LOVE JUNKY - arrived on a new label. Although not as brilliant, half the songs are really great & if you like this collection you better buy that album too, you can probably find it cheap here at amazon.marketplace. "Get Out", "Star", "Second Time Around", " How To Face It", "Here In Heaven" & a re-recordings of "Crazy" & "Over Your Head" from that album are as good as any other bands best songs...
Simply WONDERFUL!
For all fans of pop.......2004-12-06
The Popguns are well worth checking out. This comp collects tracks from Snog and Eugenie both of which are stellar pop records. Somehow my vinyl seems to have gone missing so Cherry Red has really come to the rescue by reissuing this material.
The Popguns are also interesting for their indie historical significance as they featured Shaun Charman, formerly of the Wedding Present, on drums from '88-'91. His drumming is superlative on these recordings and gives the tracks real poppy bounce and excitement.
The Popguns' finest moment, "Waiting for the Winter" is featured on the Rough Trade Indiepop compilation released this year (2004). The Rough Trade comps are solid collections of representative tracks from the periods and genres they investigate. Their selection of the Popguns further solidifies the band's importance.
You must hear this CD.......2003-01-03
This album sums up all that was right with UK indie music in the mid to late 1980's, but sadly never made it into the mainstream. Another Year.. is a comprehensive "best of" compilation by the most criminally underated band ever. Tuneful, melodic, catchy, just plain brilliant, the 18 tracks are all inspirational, its a pot of gold just waiting to be discovered. What are you waiting for?? go ahead, buy it!! ENJOY it !! If you like full on, fizzing indie guitar pop with a lot of feeling thrown in, you won't regret buying this.
All the best songs by one of indies great unsung bands.......2000-06-23
I never normally bother to leave reviews on this site, but felt move to do so by the strength of my disagreement with the previous, one star review.
The Popguns were a relatively obscure indie guitar band from Brighton. Female vocals, wonderful melodies, wistful lyrics, fantastic jangly guitar. Admittedly their last album wasn't up to much, but their first two, Eugenie and Snog are classic albums of perfect pop songs, and it is from these two records that the tracks on "Another Year Another Address" are culled.
When this CD came out I bought five copies to give to friends (who all love it). And I'm not a generous man. That's how great this album is!
Terrible as usual.......2000-06-08
The popguns are terrible as usual. Their previous album was already an awful pile of wailing happy voices and over-simplistic riffs... Not worth buying and certainly not worth writing more about.
