Amazon.com essential recording
Combine this with the King of Swing's earlier-era Live at Carnegie Hall recording and you have not only Benny Goodman's two best works, but two jazz cornerstones. B.G. in Hi-Fi was recorded five years after the clarinetist had his last permanent big band (he'd work mostly with smaller combos from here on out), but all the players found on this disc are superb. And, though the big-band style may have been way past its prime in '54, Goodman certainly isn't. On tunes like "Get Happy"--one of the more spirited romps on this disc--he swings with vigor and topnotch playing. Eight cuts feature a big band; the remaining 12 are quintets. Four previously unreleased tracks (including a great rendition of "Ain't Misbehavin'" played by his quintet) are included. Excellent sound throughout, and some truly swinging, classic tunes. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
it doesn't get much better than this.......2006-05-21
Supurb CD! If you just purchase one Goodman CD--let it be this one. None of his big bands ever sounded more mature, well rehearsed, and sharper than this group. This is about as good as big band music gets! (The sound quality is very nice, too).
Agreement with past reviewer about missing songs.......2005-04-19
I want to back up what a previous reviewer stated about the cd version missing songs originally included on the lp version.
Why? These songs are excellent.
As for the recording, the performance is a good as Goodman ever did in the 30's and 40's with better recording techiques.
This is probably the best "modern" Goodman recording.
It would get a five if it did not exclude those songs.
As it does, I give it a three for negligence and hope the recording will be reissued with these songs included.
By the way, why does Amazon include a 'NO' in 'was this review helpful to you?'. People are only human and don't like opinions that differ from themselves, thus the 'NO' makes it too easy express such displeasure.
Are they trying to discourage negative reviews, hence not purchase the CD. Such reviews only help a person in not being dissatisfied a product that received positive reviews
Benny & Ruby.......2002-06-06
Back in the 50s these tunes came out on 45 rpm and I loved them. Later they came out on 10 and 12 inch 33 1/2 rpm. Now I have them on CD. In spite of some cool reviews I think Benny is in fine form on this CD. The ensemble is crisp and swinging. The rythmn section, while not Basie, is clean and supportive. Mel Powell is sparkling and swinging. The real star is Ruby Braff who has never sounded better. The CD has a couple of tunes that were not on the 12 inch vinyl and one of them, "I would do anything for you" is a stunner. A great CD.
Where's the rest of the album?.......2002-01-26
I remember reading a review years ago that Benny Goodman's 1954 album B.G. in Hi Fi was worth seeking out as one of his best disc's ever. A triumph for the King of Swing freshly recording many of his signiture swing tunes in glorious hi fi! This is an understatement! Unfortunately the boneheads at Capitol Records have not included the BEST of the sessions big band songs such as "Moonglow", "King Porter Stomp" and argueably Goodman's most famous song "Sing, Sing, Sing". Those songs are truely worth seeking out if you can find the original lp. It's not to say that the small group recordings are not anything less than excellant but why not keep with the original intent/concept of album - big band swing!
It's like taking Sinatra's "Only the Lonely" lp and intermixing some of his big band sides while deleting "One For My Baby". Doesn't make a lot of sense unless your a brainless record label executive.
Still a great cd but a little disappointing.
One Great CD.......2001-01-26
This CD is packed full of tunes that are sure to make you want to get up and move around. The sound quality is good, the tunes are great, and the band is swinging. If you want a great CD by Benny Goodman that will keep you wanting more then buy this one. You will not regret it.

Kenton in Hi-Fi.......2006-11-10
This is a must have compilation of music by Stan Kenton and his band. It is a good start in collecting his (their) music.
Hard to find CD's.......2005-07-27
I am a great Stan Kenton fan and it is very difficult to find high quality CD's that have been remastered to surround sound. Many of Kenton's recordings were cut in the 40's before HiFi was born. I do wish you would annotate in your shopping list if the CD has been remastered or the original cut. I do appreciate doing business with you. You have good prices and you do exactly what you say you will do. Glad your around Amazon.

Kenton was, is and will be the Greatest..........2004-11-30
When I was a Senior in Oak Ridge Hi School, Stan Kenton came to Whittle Springs in Knoxville! All of the Hood, Dolan & Hamrick Crew wished to hear such an Awesome Band of 5 humongeous Saxes, 5 tremendous Trombones plus 5 Reknown Hi-floating Trumpets! They also included Eddie Safranski as Bassist & Shelly Mannes as the Drummer par-excellance! That was the original sound of the Late 1940's. The most awesome, ad-libbing, creative, outstanding to say the least, likely the most Melifilous, Tremendous Crew ever to be assembled.
Upon hearing Jazz played in the late 40's, unlike this sound of today's CD of KENTON HI-FI we missed that super digital stereo update of "Artistry in Rhythm, Colaboration, Painted Rhythm, and Peanut Vendor with the different Trombones: Carl Fontana, Milt Berhart, alongside Hi-floating Trumpets like Pete Candoli and Maynard Fergusion! The great arrangements of Stan Kenton & Pete Rugolo leave an indescribable taste for hearing all of the fine-tuned transitions between Saxophone Sections and the Brass Men, blowing the roof-off with their screaming Hi-tones above those Latin-American Percussion rhythms.
Needless to add more of this perspective from my 50yr history of being immersed in Church and Classical Music, into becoming once again...An old Jazz Student as today's Church Musician! Retired Chap Fred W Hood
terrific quality.......2003-10-15
This is a great recording of terrific music. But this Capitol reissue has one major flaw. I have the original stereo album consisting of the cuts recorded February 11, 1956. Selections 1 to 13 were all released in TRUE STEREO on the original LP. With the exception of the alternate take of Minor Riff and the last three cuts (recorded in 1958)the remaining original cuts from the Capitol LP were issued in mono on this Capitol jazz CD. I do not understand why Capitol will not issue the CD in the original stereo format.
Makes Heavy Metal sound like 101 Strings!.......2002-12-31
I purchased this CD to find out what the noise was all about regarding Kenton, only to discover that Kenton IS the noise. I had previously heard "The Creep," "Artistry in Bolero," and the orchestra's hilarious Wagner LP, so this was no surprise. I knew that the band was loud; I just didn't know how very loud. Kenton and his arrangers created music that was bereft of subtlety--aural assaults ideally-suited for listeners with three-measure attention spans and no desire to experience much of music's linear aspect. Chords, noise, and more chords! That phrase sums up this CD pretty well, I think.
Nevertheless, the musicianship on these sides is brilliant. And the orchestrations are technically splendid, especially those by Pete Rugolo. The "Artistry" theme is an unforgettable creation, even if it goes absolutely nowhere. A single, repeating section that consists primarily of one ninth-chord-based motif, this "piece" is manipulated in the most cosmetic fashion, with rhythmic and dynamic contrast taking the place of, say, form. But it works. Less unforgettable is "Concerto to End All Concertos," a "composition" consisting of glued-together phrases and bombastic passages--chromatic and modal--that must have made Paul Whiteman arranger Ferde Grofe blush. But it's superbly played, with the usual great solo work.
Also superb is the recording quality, truly amazing for 1956. One question bugs me, though--who copied whom, Kenton or Les Paul? I refer to "Lover," a wondrous tune that retains its quality regardless of what is done to it. Did both artists decide, independently, to go for the fastest speed possible? And what if Kenton had used Paul's innovation of doubling the tape speed? Do we want to know?

Customer Reviews:
Big Band Swing without the scratchy "Lo-Fi" sound.......2000-04-29
This album is one of the few historical "Swing Compilations" I have found that has excellent sound quality. The tunes seem largely to have been recorded in the late 1950's at Capitol Records. That is probably why the sound quality is so good.
Capitol is know for breaking ground in audio quality. This company was one of the first to record using the early multi-track recorders (three tracks--stereo background and separate vocal track). This company had an underground chamber designed for reverb.
The music on the recording is also of the highest quality and largely "up-tempo", danceable tunes. There is plenty of Basie and Ellington, Goodman, James and special recreations by the Glen Gray Casa Loma Orchestra.
These Glen Gray tunes along with others by Billy May's orchestra (for those who don't know one of Sinatra's favorite band leaders) ultimately became "The Swing Era" issued by Time Life Records in roughly 1970. These were extremely faithful recreations, in beautiful stereo, of the original arrangements (AND IMPROV SOLOS) taken down from the original 1930's 1940's, etc. recordings.
Instead of having digital fixups done on old metal parts, you have great big band musicians originally recorded with modern equipment and supremely beautiful audio quality. This is what makes this album so great!
Listening to this you can imagine what it would have been like to take your date down to the Palomar Ball Room and dance to Benny Goodman's band playing "Stompin at the Savoy".
Get this record if you like swing music at all!
Clean, crisp, classic.......1999-01-14
With the flat, angular beats of neo-swing damaging the genre's reputation and the sometimes scratchy, badly recorded cuts of the 30's-40's swing tracks Oscillatin' Ryhthm is a blessing. The tracks were recorded in hi-fi in the 50's (during the first "resurgance" of swing) by bands that eithere were from the original era or had a lot of personnel from the era. Each cut is beautiful and clean. The recordings are sensational with a rich, full tone. "T'aint What You do" by Billy May almost eclipses the original Jimmie Lunceford recordings. If you truly know what it means when I say a song swings, then you need to own this album. No self-respecting dancer or swing music afficianado should be without it.
