Although similar in musical content and creative vocal approach to his previous solo outings, Gerald Levert's Love & Consequences finds the artist in a more mature space lyrically. Absent is the familiar bump-and-grind rhetoric, replaced with more thoughtful love-and-relationship themes. "No Man's Land" is a sobering track that deals with the headier problems of the world, while "Humble Me" is an apologetic cut in which Levert explores the age-old adage that what goes around, comes around--but with a father-son twist. "Thinkin' About It" rings with a contemporary, radio-friendly sheen but digs deeper lyrically than most on-air offerings. Finally, "That's the Way I Feel About You" is a romantic ode featuring guest vocalist Mary J. Blige, offering a youthful interpretation of Bobby Womack's 1971 hit. --J.R. Reynolds

Love & Consequences Gerald Levert.......2007-03-29
Ok get ready to have a friend around when you listen to this cd.
His weakest CD but his voice saves it.......2007-03-08
On Love & Consequences, Gerald LeVert makes a few overtures to hip-hop, but he remains, in his heart, a sensitive loverman -- which is both a good and bad thing. LeVert is a powerful, soulful vocalist who can deliver love ballads as well as any of his contemporaries, but he doesn't always exhibit much musical imagination. "No Sense" may have cameos from rappers Layzie Bone and Ken Dawg, and "That's the Way I Feel About You" is a duet with Mary J. Blige, but they only illustrate that LeVert is from the old school and doesn't really have the desire to bring his music into the present. Which means, of course, that Love & Consequences isn't much different than any other LeVert album from the '90s -- it has a slight modern sheen, but it's a quiet storm album at its heart. It doesn't offer any surprises, but LeVert is a professional -- and that means there are enough solid songs here to make it enjoyable, but not quite enough to make the entire album memorable.
Love & Consequences.......2002-09-22
Gerald Levert, son of the legendary Eddie Levert (a member of the seminal R&B group the O'Jays) and one third of the double-platinum-selling group LSG, has delivered a thoughtful and earnest solo effort. With Love & Consequences, the third solo album in his Levert's canon, Levert covers issues dealing with matters of the heart--pleasure, the pain, urgent desire, reconciliation, hope--with a forthright and honest voice that has become even sexier and more full-bodied with maturity.
Past efforts from Levert were decidedly funky, designed for getting one's groove on, but with Love & Consequences Levert is delivering his personal take on the ebb and flow of male/ female relationships. This is particularly evident in the sensuous and silky duet with Mary J. Blige titled "That's The Way I Feel About You," one of the album's best tracks. All 12 songs were written and produced by Levert, with the exception of "Thinkin' 'Bout It," the playfully sexy first single, which was produced by Deelite (who produced "My Body" for LSG). Love & Consequences also features the wonderfully clever and disjointed rap style of Bone Thugs N Harmony on "No Sense," and "No Man's Land" enlists the artistry of Wyclef Jean from the Fugees.
Love & Consequences delivers the grooves and the funk and is a worthy addition if you like your R&B straight-up.
Pretty darn underrated.......2002-08-22
Gerald hardly ever disappoints, and though this album is dark in subject matter (he himself was going through marriage problems during the making of this album, which spawns off a couple of worthy tracks), this is still one of his best albums. Even the song with Mo Thugs ("No Sense") works well. But my favorites are the duet with Mary J. Blige (Bobby Womack's "That's the Way I Feel About You"), "What About Me", the R. Kelly-produced "Men Like Us", and "Taking Everything". A classic that gets better with each listen.
Totally Splendid --- A must have!.......2001-12-11
It is a wonderful collectible item. There is a song for each and
every one. I'm am totally biased when it comes to the man***
himself, but his voice does wonders to my soul, and brings true
magic to the moment.

Deranged.......2007-02-09
These two albums show Godley And Creme at their deranged best...or worst, depending on how you look at it. These two seemed to work best with a normalizing influence, like in 10cc with Eric and Graham stopping these two from flying off into the stratsophere. Once they left, something like Consequences was perhaps inevitable. No doubt feeling pretty good, after the commercial and critical success of the first four 10cc albums, they probably felt they could do anything. The result was Consequences, one of the most over the top, ambitious etc. albums of all time. It effectively killed their career in the critics eyes: 10cc continued on for four more albums, each strong in their own ways, with various strangeness running throughout, illustrating Eric and Graham were also a bit strange themselves.
However, Music From Consequences, the album containing the songs from Consequences with some of the instrumental stuff, also illustrates Godley And Creme's "normal" aspects. Indeed, to call this stuff "normal" is like calling Clint Howard "handsome." These are tuneful songs, but full of the weird push and pull of classic 10cc. This album shows that, in the impenterable nonsense of Consequences, there was a great little weird pop album waiting to come out.
After the massive failure of Consequences, the band scaled back their ambitions, and released the short L. However, just because they scaled back their ambitions didn't mean they scaled back their insanity: this is one of the most complex, twisted, confusing, and just plain weird albums to ever be released by two formerly succesful pop stars. The interesting thing about the album is it's TUNEFULNESS: though it becomes weird, twisted, dissonant, it never forgets the importance of GOOD MELODY. It's sort of sad, though, to see them operate here: if they would have stayed in 10cc, these songs would have fit in well with the more normal stuff the other two were doing. Imagine hearing "Sandwiches Of You" sitting next to "Things We Do For Love." Twisted indeed!
Classic albums full of wit, humor and invention.......2004-07-27
Perhaps the consequence of ambition is to be savaged by critics and fans alike. "Consequences" was torn to shreds by many critics for its pretentions when it was first released. A narrative double disc album, it featured a story about nature rebelling against man along with songs and instrumentals by Godley & Creme who had recently left 10cc. While ambitious and, yes, perhaps pretentious the sprawling album offered something music hadn't seen in awhile--artist attempting something on a large scale with wit and intelligence. The drawback to "Consequences" was its reliance on, perhaps, too much narration by the talented Peter Cook when fans had come to expect something different from Godley & Creme.
The "Music from Consequences" came to market to salvage a disasterous reception for the duo's album double concept album. It focused primarily on the songs and instrumentals with a bit of narration by Cook to hold it all together. On the whole, it works equally as well as the original double album. The best songs are very much the equal of what the duo had accomplished within 10cc. "5 O'Clock in the Morning" stands as, perhaps, the best track on the album with its observations about the life of the working person.
"L" on the other hand didn't have ambition of "Consequences" but it did have just about as much creativity going on. "An Englishman in New York" features Godley & Creme's sarcastic wit at its best and the galloping melody and vocal delivered by Kevin Godley reminds me of "The Dean and I" in terms of its ambitious scope and musical changes. It's not a perfect album but does benefit from a better, more focused "message" than "Consequences". Featuring gutarist Phil Manzanera (Roxy Music, 801)on many tracks, the album shows the duo's Zappaesque word play and musical invention frequently in top form.
While this edition lacks the bonus tracks seen with the other reissues (each of the others has anywhere from 4 to 8 tracks on each CD), it's a great compilation of two fine albums by this often forgotten creative duo. Godley & Creme wouldn't have a hit in the US until their next to last album ("The History Mix") with the innovative "Cry" (which benefited from an original video directed by the duo themselves)and as good as that song is, these two albums at their best are even better. I'd give "Music from Consequences" 4 stars and "L" 4 1/2. The remastering for both albums is comparable to the US releases (where "Consequences" was released in its entirety as a two disc CD and "L" was combined with the witty "Freeze Frame").

"Billy Martin is a drummer's drummer ... but rarely has this in-the-pocket explorer proven himself to be so unbelievably nasty as on his latest solo venture." - CMJ
"Medeski Martin and Wood bridge the gap between the New York downtown jazz scene, which features the avant-garde guru John Zorn, and the New England jam-band touring circuit, led by the popular improv-rock group Phish ... drummer Billy Martin consistently strikes loose-limbed, flexible grooves." - ROLLING STONE
An extreme, improvised, live musical journey that resembles modern classical and free jazz - and what makes it work is the unique chemistry between the two musicians. This recording documents the second impromptu meeting of two unique musical personalities during one week in October 2005.
Dave Burrell has forged his own unique avant-garde style of playing since the 1970s in New York, where he played with Albert Ayler, Pharoah Sanders, and David Murray. Billy Martin, best known for his percussion work and drumming with avant-funk bands Medeski Martin and Wood and John Lurie's Lounge Lizards, is also well known for his experimentation with many forms of experimental, African, jazz, funk, and classical music.

What the Dickens is a Gizmo!?.......2003-12-17
After hinting at the symphonic extravaganzas to come with "One Night in Paris" from "The Original Soundtrack" and "Don't Hang Up" from "How Dare You", Lol and Kevin left 10C.C. to put out this 3 album boxed set to showcase the Gizmotron. The "Gizmo" was a small unit of rotating wheels attached to the bridge area of a guitar. When the wheels were pressed and made contact with the strings, a bowing sound emanated. Cool huh? Well, maybe just a little too late for commercial success with the advent of things like the E-bow and cheaper PCM synthesizers, but the haunting sounds that Lol gets from this thing are fantastic. As an interesting side note, the venerable Jimmy Page used a gizmo'ed guitar for some of the great sounds on "In The Evening".
Anyway, I still love this album 25 years on. I only gave it 3 stars to scare off those who are not Godley/Creme afficianodos who might not get the "concept". The concept of "nature taking revenge on a world gone mad" plays out with a sprinkling of great pop songs spaced between the dry Peter Cook dialogue(which may take several listens to get the gist of what's going on).
Other highlights include a highly prized Sarah Vaughn guest vocal on "Lost Weekend", a haunting ode to the men who sail the seas in "Sailor", and a very lovely pop work out on "Five o'Clock In The Morning."
The rest of the instrumental tunes that serve to help the story line show off more of the Gizmo's talents, and the accompanying booklet(that came with the 3-album set)showed such artifacts as the boys shoveling dirt down a staircase onto a Sennheiser dummy head to simulate the burial scene.
And last but not least, they saved room for a beautiful symphonic extravaganza with "Blint's Tune-Movements 1-17", which show that these guys were certainly more than just your average pop rockers.
All in all, a great display of talent, but just not your usual 10C.C.-type release, and certainly not for everyone, what with the unusual British dialogue and such. But for those that go for the slightly left o' center with a twinkle in their eyes, this just might hit the bullseye. Enjoy!!
Peanut butter and roast beef.......2003-03-25
This is a very unusual album. I recall hearing a Canadian album in the late 70's called Music From Consequences and enjoying it a lot. Essentially it was most (if not all) the actual songs from Consequences the three album vinyl set. The music on this album explained something I had wondered about. 10cc had been a band whose music I liked from way back in the days of Sheet Music but when I saw them in concert it was a sad disappointment. The show lacked something that was unique to 10cc but I couldn't put my finger on what. After hearing this album I realized what was missing... kind of like seeing the Beatles without Lennon and McCartney.
The music on Consequences is indicative of one big reason 10cc worked. The melodies are catchy enough but very rich and colourful as well. There is certainly nothing thin or "simple pop" about them and yet they remain accessible and enjoyable. Unfortunately the dialogue, although interesting to a point, has a tendency to go on... people who are into music might not have the patience for such extensive talk and fans of Peter Cook may find the music distracts from the story. I like peanut butter and I like roast beef but in order to get into three full albums of it mixed together I'd have to be pretty ripped!
That being said it would be nice if the CD set had included text of Peter Cook's dialogues in the liner notes.
Still extraordinary.......2002-06-14
When I listend to this triple album first in 1978 I was completely surprised about this complex stuff on six vinyl sides. I had to listen over and over again to the story to discover more and more details hidden in this sound scene. Unfortunately this album was not mine, so I had to gave it back to my friend :-( In 1998 I purchased a 2-CD limited edition re-release of this fantastic concept album. This set came with a very poor booklet with no lyrics and dialogs and so I wrote a complete transcript of the album on my own...Through the years I became a virtual member of the staff around Mr. Blint and every time I listen to the album I'm really caught in the scene.
There are (also) very fine music peaces (my favorite is "Lost Weekend" sung by Sarah Vaughn) which apparently have nothing to to with the albums theme and the divorce negotiation.
The issue of this album, natures revenge to the mankind, today becomes more and more significance.
Listen to this "Movie for the blind" and you will stick to it!
After the very last track when you listen carefully, you can hear the birds sing again...
Curious, artistic, comedic, catchy, entertaining..........2002-06-02
I won't try to describe this album. It's more of an experience than an album, you know? Instead, I'll tell you that it's hilariously funny, musically addicting, and a total blast. The songs are great, the voice acting is thoroughly entertaining, the replay value is infinite. You hear something new every time. The ambient sounds, the little details, the subtle language, the melodies and instrumentals all make this a fantastic musical experience. I highly recommend this album.
Interesting Curiosity : for the Oblique.......2002-02-09
This 2-cd set is of a package of music and 'radio skit' dialogues that loosely revolve around the premise of the world ("as we now know it") coming to an end by means of natural disaster. What it really is is one cd of musical vignettes and effects meant to demonstrate the Godley/Creme musical instrument invention the "GIZMO" The instrument produces a wide variety of sound that was extraordinary in it's time (1976). The second cd is comprised of a series of dialogues mixed with Godley/Creme numbers that carry the story of 2 lawyers, a plant worker, his estranged french prostitute wife, and a curious fellow who lives below the floor of the law office named Blint. You gotta
listen to it to get the full effect of Peter Cook's audio character studies (he does most of the character voices and also wrote the dialogues). All in all this is a cd set for those who
like the offbeat and have an oblique perspective on how the universe functions. For those like me who bought the 3LP set in 1976, it is a treat to be able to get this work on cd.
