Album Description
The Smiths and Morrissey's impact on the world of Emo and Punk Rock is huge. The Smiths defied rockist conventions, while creating new classic guitar riffs and exploring the sensitive side of human nature with tongue in cheek. The Smiths & Morrissey set the stage for young bands to forge exciting new pathways in rock music.
Customer Reviews:
Oh My!..........2006-09-24
Please don't ever let this happen again. I will immediately proceed to finding out who owns the rights to these songs and write them regarding this stupid decision they chose to make.
Bad. Very Bad........2006-02-13
I've only listened to "There is a light that never goes out", and it is one of the most horribly arranged and dreadfully executed covers I've ever heard. This band, "My Awesome Compilation" completely butchered a wonderful song by calling it a "tribute?" ... I'd suggest getting Seven Worlds Collide if you want to hear someone other than Morrissey do justice to this song.
Absolutely Horrible!!!.......2005-10-28
First of all I cannot stress enough how much The Beautiful Mistake butchered "Cemetary Gates" It makes my stomach turn. Every single song is butchered. To the point that it's disrespectful. "Frankly Mr. Shankly" "Panic" "There's a light..." such beautiful songs to just have some horrible band cover it. Every band on this cd shouldn't be allowed to record again. Cursive, Beautiful Mistake etc. should be fined for this.
I can't believe they didn't even learn the words!!!.......2005-06-24
This album is a WASTE of MONEY!!!
Don't buy it!
I cannot stress this enough!
The singer/band (The Beautiful Mistake) for the Cemetry Gates cover didn't even bother to LEARN THE WORDS to Cemetry Gates! (and it's not like he made up his own -- he didn't, he just mumbled. How disrespectful to Morrissey, the genius who created the song in the first place. It's disgusting of Beautiful Mistake to sing that song on a commercial recording without even knowing the words...
What a waste of one of the most beautiful songs Morrissey has ever written! I was so looking forward to hearing this cover, I really was, and it was horrible and disappointing.
Do yourself a favor: buy all the Morrissey and Smiths albums if you don't already have them, and don't waste your time, money, or energy buying this third-rate covers album.
Surely the people who produced this album could have found some better bands/singers for this venture. What a unneccessary waste, especially on a project that could have been so good!!!
Not worth the money........2004-11-28
I saw this in the store, and I just had to have it. Firstly, I love the Smiths, and secondly, I absolutely obsess over Cursive. I saw that they had done a cover of "Frankly, Mr.Shankly" and I bought it right away. I went home to listen to it, and I was disappointed. The Cursive song was great, as expected, but all of the other songs fell short.
If you're considering buying this, don't. Just download the Cursive cover and don't waste your time on the rest.

ALL THE MUSIC YOU EVER NEED!!.......2003-05-23
This boxed set is by far one of the best purchases I have ever made. As a Purcell freak, this hits every button I have. The cast of characters include the inequitable Robert King, New College Choir, Bowman, and a host of other venerable persons. Likewise the attention to period performance of these works makes it an essential addition to the library of any serious anglophile/Musicologist etc. Now if only the Britten Realizations of all Purcell's songs could be recorded alongside the originals! You will Love this set!

Customer Reviews:
Haunting.......2006-02-22
I'm giving this compilation 3 stars not because it isn't good...but because I feel that the String Quartet didn't take advantage of The Smiths catalogue. I was disappointed to see that some of my favorites were not covered. Maybe for volume 2?
Other than that...it was mostly beautiful. The cover of "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want" was particularly good. In fact, they managed to make it even more
melancholy than the original! I didn't even know that was possible.
mediocre.......2004-06-20
This CD sounds like a good idea, but on hearing it I was disappointed. The string quartet doesnt seem enough for a lot of these songs, maybe with a few more instruments in there it could work. It also seems, like many other string quartet tribute CDs, that these people playing the songs are not fans of the band, they don't seem to get into the music, or understand what makes it great. This CD is only nescassary for hardcore smiths fans that already have their albums.
Great album........2004-04-04
This is a wonderful album if you truly are a "Smiths" fan. The strings do an excellent job of masking as Morrissey's voice. However, even if you aren't a fan of The Smiths, the melodies are enjoyable. Johnny Marr will go down as a gifted guitarist/writer (as all his Guitar magazine accolades). People who aren't fans or are "Morrissey-jaded" wouldn't like this or probably anything else not Morrissey. Oh yeah, that's right I said it!!!
a little odd.......2003-10-05
Uh, this is wierd. It is like Morrissey and the Smiths covering Metalica. It just doesn't fit. Even so, for the hardcore Smiths fan it is worth the buy. Back To The Old HOuse was enjoyable, but I would suggest that you listen to the versions of other artists. And who chose the playlist? Crappy at best.
Worked for The Cure tribute not for The Smiths.......2003-09-08
The String Quartet's tribute to The Smiths doesn't quite work as well as the tribute to The Cure. Maybe it's because the music from The Cure is much more colorful and has more layer and works wonderfully well with string instruments. However, without Morrisey's voice the string music doesn't work well.

Album Description
Gershwin's "Porgy And Bess" and Frank Loesser's "The Most = Happy Fella" get the Percy Faith treatment on these two original albums = on one compact disc. Famed "Tonight Show" trumpeter "Doc" Severinsen = is the credited soloist on "Porgy And Bess."
Customer Reviews:
Nice performances.......2005-10-08
The music is very enjoyable. I especially liked Doc Severinsen's contribution on a few pieces. Percy Faith is always solid, and this collection is no exception. The Gershwin sounds much better than Most Happy Fella because of the stereo sound compared to mono.
"Gershwin and Loesser musical journeys ~ Percy Faith".......2003-06-04
The greatness of George Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess", can only amplify melody of music can exist without lyric ~ and our legendary composer/arranger performs his "Percy Faith Touch". Mr. Faith was chumping at the bit to do this project ~ with sweeping arrangements and full orchestration that leaves no stone unturned. Highlighting ~ "SUMMERTIME", "I GOT PLENTY O' NUTTIN'", "IT AIN'T NECESSARILY SO", "I LOVES YOU, PORGY", "THERE'S A BOAT THAT'S LEAVIN' SOON" and my favorite of favorites "MY MAN'S GONE NOW", attentive haunting strings with echoing saxophones each musician reaching into the depths of their soul for this one ~ they were George Ockner (violin), Bernie Leighton (piano), "Doc" Severinsen (trumpet), Jimmie Abato (alto sax), Russ Banzer (tenor sax), Terry Snyder (drums), Phil Kraus (mallets), Lucien Schmidt (cello) and Harold Feldman (oboe).
Another well received show was Frank Loesser's "The Most Happy Fella", with some great musical selections that Mr. Faith has given his full attention and the arrangements are exuberant. Such as the opening tracks "THE MOST HAPPY FELLA", "STANDING ON THE CORNER", "ABBONDANZA", "SPOSALIZIO", "FRESNO BEAUTIES" and "BIG D", sure to please all fans of Musicals and Broadway Shows ~ this one has your name on it.
A must have for those rainy afternoons with a good book ~ entire album of twenty-seven selections is simply captivating and highly listenable. Percy Faith is still larger that life and his music will live through us his fans ~ and go on forever.
Total Time: 72:10 on 27 Tracks ~ Collectables COL-CD-7469 ~ (5/21/2002)

Amazon.com
Not exactly a highlights disc, this, but a judiciously pruned and fully coherent presentation of a masterpiece that's arguably too verbose for its own good. All the hits are intact: Baron Ochs's rantings, the slithering presentation of the Rose, the velveteen final trio, and, of course, those indestructible waltzes. A little less of the drawn-out opening scene plus the inclusion of the extraordinary Act 3 Prelude would have made this splendid disc utterly perfect. Perhaps one loses the guttural edge and local color of Hugo von Hofmannsthal's German when rendered in the King's English, but the wonderful cast projects every word without sacrificing Strauss's liquid legato. David Parry plays up the composer's frothy textures, keeping his strings away from the unlimited schlag bar. Chandos supplies an excellent synopsis together with full English texts. In sum, the ultimate Rosenkavalier starter's kit, after which you'll want to try the legendary Karajan recording or Erich Kleiber's incandescent account. --Jed Distler
Customer Reviews:
An English Silver Rose.......2000-06-10
This "highlights" recording, one of the most recent of the Chandos "Opera in English" series, is a superlative issue that must be heard by all lovers of Richard Strauss and fine singing. Indeed, the singing is truly exceptional; mention must be made immediately of the silken voiced Octavian of Diana Montague - from start to finish she maintains a scrupulous control of legato and beauty of tone (similar to, but in my view surpassing, Susan Graham). Rosemary Joshua's Sophie surpassess most other more famous singers of this taxing role; she is truly a match for the likes of Lucia Popp and Elisabeth Schumann. Listen to the ravishing floated pianissimos in the presentation of the silver rose scene, and the final trio and duet, and I am sure you will agree. Yvonne Kenny is a Marschallin sensitive to the nuances of both text and music; vocally she is not in the class of a Schwarzkopf, Janowitz or Fleming, but this is a moving portrayal. And Tomlinson, the great Wotan and Hans Sachs of our age, is an amusing, cavernous voiced, (slightly too) boorish Ochs. The success of this performance is also due to the excellent musical support given by the London Philharmonic and conductor David Parry. Those concerned by the fact that this recording is given in English translation need not be; the translation is singer friendly (though not all the words are audible), and the standard of performance is such as to almost make no difference. If only the work were given complete - but this is still a "must buy"!

Customer Reviews:
Hendricks proves crossover chops!.......2002-08-20
Most opera singers have thrown their attempts into the ring with musical theatre, pop and jazz recordings, including Hampson, von Stade, Ramey, etc. Many involve an overly operatic style, uncredible to the ears of musical theatre goers. This recording can easily be added to the crossover successes of the late Eileen Farrell and the highly versatile, lyric Dawn Upshaw.
The Porgy & Bess medley has shown how far Hendricks has come since her first recording as Clara in the mid 1970s. This set from Gershwin's folk opera showcases a versatility of lucious chest tones, bluesy sadness (My man's gone now & I loves you Porgy), energetic jazz (It ain't necessarily so) and soaring high notes (I'm on my way) which blend her worldly operatic training with her childhood of singing gospel and spirituals in her minister father's church.
A wonderful, blended style adds grace to "How long has this been going on?" and "The man I love", but the real charm surprisingly lies in the faster tracks of "Lady be good", "Somebody loves me" and "Fascinating Rhythm." This album is a winner for Hendricks fans, and should prove intriguing to the musical theatre and jazz afficionados as well.

Mega kicks for this!.......2002-09-02
This is amazing. The songs on this have DEPTH. And the music is AMAZING, it's sort of gothic, it is unique, the girls voice is AMAZING, it touches my soul. It beats all the stupid pop-bands (Westlife for example) by far. So just go out and buy it (if you can find it anywere!)
