      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not the Holy Grail of Beatles Tributes..........2005-11-16

Well, I finally got a copy of this album (used copy through Amazon) after a few years of keeping it on my wish list, waiting for it to be re-issued. If I seem disappointed, it's only because I've been waiting so long for a copy, and no album could live up to that pressure.
Don't get me wrong, if you like long synthesizer solos or instrumental Beatles covers, these are fine. Wakeman's take on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" evokes Vangelis, mixed with the prog-rock that he's known for. But more than anything, this style calls to mind that disco cover of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony from the 70's - it didn't NEED to be re-made as a disco song. The Beatles songs didn't NEED to be redone in new-age synth rock, but that said, there's nothing all that offensive about it.
I guess I just thought my Beatles covers collection would be more complete after adding this CD, but I guess that'll never happen.
For a rocking cover of the Beatles song "Every Little Thing", check out the album "Yes" by Yes - that's how it should be done.

      3 out of 5 stars A little disappointed.......2000-09-18

I never would have thought that the music of one of my favorite bands played by my favorite keyboard player and composer would be disappointing but, there is just something about this album that lacks the usual Rick Wakeman release. To be honest, I only listened to it twice and the second play was because I thought that I would experience what was missing on the first play. Maybe it's just me and maybe I should go back and give it a few more chances by playing it a few more times but, I've never had to TRY to like any Rick Wakeman albums before. There is just something lacking here that I can't put into words. Could it possibly be that my favorite composer and keyboard player doesn't play other people's music too well? Probably not. His Piano Album contains a few compositions by others and I was amazed by all of that album so, at least in that case, he did a great job on the solo piano versions of other people's music. I think what Wakeman should have done was make this a Beatles tribute played entirely on solo piano. Wakeman could take the worst song in the world and make it sound like the greatest thing ever written when he sits down at the piano by himself. Imagine if he did that with the music of the greatest band ever.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent tribute to the Beatles.......2000-06-28

Rick recorded this album in 1996-97, with the help of guitarrist extraordinaire Fraser Thorneycroft. Basically played with Synths and electric guitar, Wakeman made a fine selection of the Beatles' songs to arrange and play beautifully: Norwegian wood, Blackbird, Help, Come together, The fool on the hill, etc. As I said, Fraser is a very complete and soulful guitar player which contributes a whole lot to make this album a must for Beatles and Wakeman fans.
