One need hear only the first notes of this collection--the Edge's ringing guitar notes ushering in "Pride (In the Name of Love)"-to be taken back to 1984: Ronald Reagan and Maggie Thatcher rule the Western world, the L.A. Olympics is the top sports story, and Ms. Pac-Man reigns at arcades. In rock & roll, there's U2 growing in stature with each new title. Even doubters of the Irish lads have to concede that together they formed the one '80s band with the skill and sense of scale to take over the airwaves and concert stages in a decade of diminished expectations. This 15-song '80s best-of assortment (stick around for the hidden track) spans the decade, reaching back to 1980's "I Will Follow," when Bono and company were peach-fuzzy and earnest as choirboys, and tracking their path through their most glaring misstep, 1988's overblown Rattle and Hum. --Steven Stolder

Album Description

Stunningly brilliant is the only way to describe the new Wired Remorse album appropriately titled "The Ides of March." The album whose theme of backstabbing and revenge comes thru as loud and aggressive as anything since Siouxsie and the Banshees "JU JU" or Joy Division's "Unknown Pleasures." While the tribal drum beats will remind one of Dead Can Dance, Killing Joke or even Bow Wow Wow. The minor guitar barrage and whaling singing should force you anticipate the best "old school" album in years!

1 out of 5 stars I knew it!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-02-21

I always knew U2 sucks!!! A friend of mine who is a huge fan of U2 and she kept on pushing me to listen to it and once I listened and I was like WTF is this??? and she kept telling me that U2 are always the best but I knew U2 is horrible!!! I believe she was trying to make me buy all of their albums so she could be able to get it from me for FREE but I am not that dumb!!! I told her we all cant have the SAME taste of music we all are different and we all have our own taste. So sorry friend I rate this 1 STAR!!! and yeah I have a message for U2: get lost!!! you guys are not worth to be a singer!!! You guys are terrible!!! You guys dont work too hard for this BS!!! *throw up*

5 out of 5 stars U2 ROCKS.......2007-02-20

I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED U2 WHO ARE AMONGST THE BEST IRISH ROCK BANDS AFTER TASTE AND THIN LIZZY.THEY MADE SEVERAL EXCELLENT ALBUMS LIKE JOSHUA TREE.THIS COMPILATION FEATUES THE BEST FROM THEIR EIGHTIES ALBUMS.BUY IT.
PS:AVOID ALL ALBUMS FROM THE LOUSY FOREIGNER AS RECOMMENDED BY A REVIEWER BELOW.WAITING FOR A GIRL LIKE YOU SUCKS,DONT LISTEN TO IT.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it.......2007-02-12

The negative reviews of this album are actually what made me want it. Since it's for casual U2 fans only, which is what I am. I really love a bunch of the songs on here. Some of the songs seem oddly placed though, as if they couldn't possibly be part of the best during this time period. For example, "When Love Comes To Town" just outright sucks. However, I hate blues, so it's understandable.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD.......2007-01-12

I am just a casual U2 fan and this CD is perfect for my collection.

For all Greg Dulli's earnestness and thorough self-deprecation, maybe he and the Afghan Whigs just showed up to the post-punk, soul-tinted party a little early. Beyond the nervy-edged guitar riffage of "Retarded" and Dulli's muted, growly vocal, there isn't a whole lot on this retrospective to suggest that the Whigs couldn't just appear in 2007 and be hugely popular. The big-guitar and piano combination on "What Jail Is Like" and Dulli's unmistakable presence as a singer rekindle the listener's desire that the Whigs get solidly beyond niche-level acceptance. Dulli's astringent lyrics are centrally important throughout the band's oeuvre and stand out here (witness the heartfelt vocal tug of "Be Sweet" get countered by the famous "I got a dick for a brain" line). The Whigs are believably radio-ready--especially after so many male singer/songwriters have confessed to so much on the FM dial. As for this 18-song collection, fans will quibble over song selections. What they'll agree on is that the two new tracks, "I'm a Soldier" and "Magazine," both slow(er) and groovy, could make great strides for a new Whigs' era--which is apparently unlikely, given Dulli's commitment to the Twilight Singers. --Andrew Bartlett

Album Description

Nothing sounds quite like their raw, unflinching music, which as amassed a large and loyal cult following over the years. This is their first ever compilation and is an extraordinary portrait of one of American rock's most distinctive bands.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fantastic.......2007-06-17

Actually, "Going To Town" and "What Jail Is Like" are NOT on the album 1965 as suggested below. The former is on Black Love, the latter on Gentlemen. The other two tracks that hail from 1965 are "John The Baptist" and "Uptown Again". Also, a great many hardcore Whigs fans will tell you that the "difficult" Black Love is their favorite AW spin (myself included). This retrospective's two ending cuts, "Crime Scene Part One" and "Faded" are the bookends to that wonderful album and are presented here as an exclamation-point mini-suite encore to Greg Dulli's dream live set. He did, in fact, do exactly that at the helm of his Twilight Singers live in '04...

Amazing stuff here - fans will always quibble about the tracklistings of compilations, but this is a superb look back at perhaps the most underrated band of all time. Super selection of songs hand-picked by Greg and bassist John Curley. Outstanding packaging by Rhino with nice liner notes and cool rare photographs from throughout the band's run. If this is your introduction to the Afghan Whigs, congratulations. I envy you. After you round out your AW collection take a nice, long pull from Greg Dulli's Twilight Singers and Rick McCollum's Moon Maan. You will not be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Impeccable overview of Afghan Whigs.......2007-06-10

The Afghan Whigs were one of the critically revered bands on the alternative/grunge 1990s scene. After singer-songwriter Greg Dulli decided to hang it up in 2001, it's taken 6 more years for a comprehensive compilation of their work.

"Unbreakable: A Retrospective 1990-2006" (18 tracks; 76 min.) rightfully focuses on the band's 2 essential albums, 1993's "Gentlemen" and 1998's "1965", which are both represented by 4 tracks here. "Debonair" (from "Gentlemen") is on here of course, the closest the band ever came to mainstream success, and the band's signature song. "Be Sweet", "What Jail Is Like" and "Gentleman" are also included from the "Gentlemen" album. "1965" is represented by the single "Going To Town", "Crazy", "66" and the other single/EP "What Jail Is Like". The band's seminal Motown cover "Come See About Me" remains as fresh as ever. The controversial/difficult 1996 album "Black Love" is conveniently shoved all the way to the back of the compilation, with 3 songs on the last third of the compilation. There are also 2 new songs: the excellent "I'm A Soldier", and the pensive "Magazine", both recorded last year in a one-off reunion studio session. (Greg Dulli has made it clear that there are no further reunion plans.)

In all, this is a terrific overview of/introduction to the Afghan Whigs. It still boggles me to this day why the Whigs never broke through big-time in the 90s. They are just as good as, say, Pearl Jam, but for whatever reason it never happened. I hope this compilation will earn them renewed interest in their music. And I cannot omit the fact that the Whigs hail from Cincinnati, and are one of the best bands to hail from our city, ever... Greg Dulli has gone on to create great music with the Twilight Singers, so check them out if you are not familiar with them yet.

Last but not least, the compilation comes with great liner notes and background information on the band's history and legacy, another great job by the folks at Rhino, which issued this. In all, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

U2's second decade often seemed as preoccupied with the band's burgeoning superstardom--and how to confront/confound it--as it did with creating music. The band managed only four albums during the era (only half of its '80s output), projects whose gestations seemed perennially plagued by turmoil as much as mercurial creative instincts. But as this anthology chronicles, U2 ultimately managed a considerable feat: producing a memorable, lasting body of work in a decade where one of pop music's chief attributes was its disposability. The disc mixes hits like "Mysterious Ways" and "One" with seductive soundtrack cuts (the title track to Wim Wenders's Until the End of the World, Batman Forever's "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me"), new mixes of "Discotheque," "Staring at the Sun," and "Numb," and a pair of strong new tracks, the Orbit mix of "Electrical Storm" and "The Hands that Built America," the title track from Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not the perfect choice of music.......2007-03-26

Cd 1 is the best of 1990-2000, well I dissagree. "All that you can't leave behind" is under representated, it is one of the best of the band and had many hits but this compilation has only two tracks ?
What about "Elevation", "Kite" or "Walk on" ?
As I said for the other double cd "best of 1980-1990", you have most of the hits but you do not have the best songs. Some great songs are missing simply because they didn't have been played on radio, so don't try to find them on this double cd. The title "greatest hits" would be closer to reality than "The best of"

The bonus cd will me you feel in a discotheque ! Some interesting remixed version like "Mysterious Ways", "If God will send his angels" or "Even better than the real thing". The bonus cd is for die hard fans !

1 out of 5 stars Unlistenable.......2007-02-21

The worst music I think I've ever heard. It's like having your fingernails pulled off and squeezing lemon juice on it. I'd rather be shot in the groin by Dick Cheney than have to ever listen to this again. People that like this must have rode the short-bus when they were young. There's a reason the song says "I still haven't found what I'm looking for", it's because the music sucks.. bad.

5 out of 5 stars U bet..........2007-02-13

THE BEST!!!! My husband & I are so fanatic of this multi-awarded band. Way back when we were still dating, their songs hold a special place in our hearts. Gosh, all their songs are pure & natural. Buying the best of 1990-2000 was the best thing we did that day. We popped it in the CD of our car & we just loved listening to their songs while on the road. I think our 18 month old son will like them too....

Like the Black Crowes themselves, the greatest-hits collection A Tribute to a Work in Progress hearkens back to the good old days of best-of collections: you get a bunch of songs you've probably heard on the radio a million times and that's it. These are arguably the group's best songs, but there are no unreleased outtakes or remixes to force rabid collectors to purchase the disc for the sake of two songs. This straightforward document of a straightforward band is also the best entryway to the group's fabulous, swaggering, ballsy, bluesy rock & roll--that is, next to their 1992 breakthrough, Southern Harmony & Musical Companion. While arranged chronologically, what one hears here is the Atlanta-based group playing great, unpretentious Stones-, Faces-, and Zep-influenced rock. This music was made for pure, visceral enjoyment, so play it really loud and dance around. --Mike McGonigal

I love this CD. The music is not too heavy or too bubblegumish, it's just plain rock music. A great buy.

5 out of 5 stars Love the Black Crows.......2007-03-08

I purchased this CD on Feb 5, was supposed to receive by Feb 8. Unfortunately, the delivery system is definitly not as good as the cd. I finally received it March 1st. It was well worth the wait and aggravation of calling a few times to find out where it was. I can say I like every single song on the cd. Usually, I skip ahead to this song or that one. No need to here. Great songs, great cd....have to admit great price, just really lousy shipping. Better luck with that part next time.

5 out of 5 stars STILL MY FAVORITE.......2007-03-23

This CD has to be one of the best I have ever listened to. The music is a wonderful mix, especially when you have a group of very diverse listeners (all ages). It appeals to everyone and puts everyone in a GOOD MOOD!!! I would highly recommend it!!

5 out of 5 stars Better than I remember.......2007-03-08

I originally bought this as a cassette soon after the TV show reached NZ. I was clearing up and found it and thought it would be great to get it on CD to listen again to the great compilation. And I wasn't disappointed. What a great sound. The music is so lively and enjoyable. Brings a smile to my face.

5 out of 5 stars Totally rocks.......2006-09-11

OMG! This CD totally rocked because it has the best music in the world, okay? Geez, its time to rock out and also relax sometimes too because one time I was just listening to it and it was fun too but then I was tired and even still it was a great CD.

5 out of 5 stars Music that Grows on You.......2006-08-01

Several years ago, I bought this CD for my wife, and it has been gathering dust ever since. So I signed onto eBay and started a listing to sell it. While I was doing that, I decided to play the CD, since I had never heard it played before. There is no way I am going to sell that CD now. It is far too good.

Furthermore, while the CD was playing, my wife asked me what it was. When I told her, she said, "Don't you dare sell that CD!" She has nothing to fear. I have played it several times now, and I like it better each time I listen.

4 out of 5 stars The Chris Stevens Album Collection.......2006-07-30

That was the basis for Chris being the disc jockey at KBHR radio (he had all the records) and a few of them are spotlighted in this album. I think that David Swartz had a cut or two more than he should have been allowed in this album, while more music from the show should have been featured. Still, it's a pretty good album featuring a very wide range of eclectic music typical of what was played on the show, and for that I enjoyed the collection.

Alongside Ghost, another romantic comedy drama, Pretty Woman dominated the box office of 1990. The movie revitalised Richard Gere's career, and made a superstar of Julia Roberts, launching her on a string of hugely successful romantic comedies including My Best Friend's Wedding (1997), Notting Hill (1999), and, reuniting her with Gere and Pretty Woman director, Garry Marshall, The Runaway Bride (1999). Inevitably the movie's theme song is Roy Orbison's "Oh Pretty Woman", sounding fresh as ever. And if that is a typically male view of feminine attractions, Natalie Cole tells the other side of the story with the unrepentant "Wild Women Do". David Bowie provides an update of one of his greatest hits, with "Fame 90" and Robert Palmer describes "Life In Detail". The remainder of the album is a snapshot of up-and-coming acts at the beginning of the 90s, with Go West's massive hit, "King Of Wishful Thinking" and Roxette's chart smash "It Must Have Been Love" setting the agenda for slick, well produced power-pop. As nostalgia for the time just before dance took over the charts, or simply as a highly polished souvenir of one of the most popular movies ever made, Pretty Woman requires, as Peter Cetera appropriately adds, "No Explanation". --Gary S. Dalkin

For anyone who knows latin, you will see that it does not mean Heaven, Give you to me...
Dammi tu forza, o cielo= Dame tu fuerza o cielo=Heaven give me your strength!!!

But thank god you guys found the name of the song playing at the opera, it is beautiful.

@ TravelJunky...the easy listening track played while Julia is wearing a tie is called "Songbird" by Kenny G..Thats my favorite too!!...which is why I was abit disappointed that it wasn't included on this CD...Nevertheless, all the other songs DO make up for it..I can say this is easily one of the best classic movie soundtracks..Each song is captivating in its own way especially Go West's "King of Wishful thinking" and Roxette's "It must have been love"..Good stuff!

5 out of 5 stars Classic Movie.......2006-04-24

Does anyone know the song/artist of the instrumental that is being played while Julia (with only a tie on and sitting in candlelight) waits for Edward to come home after her day of shopping?

4 out of 5 stars Nice selection of songs, but buyer beware..........2007-03-07

This is a good compilation and the sound quality is nice. BUT, I noticed the remastering chopped off a few bars in "Sole Survivor" (very noticeable after the bridge) and "Time Again". I know those songs well and it jolted me a bit. There may be other cuts that I just haven't noticed yet.

If you are a purist, skip this and get the debut album separately. If you're looking only to replace your vinyl, this is fine.

4 out of 5 stars Should we be ashamed to own this!?.......2007-01-03

Last year I saw the movie "The 40 Year Old Virgin" and the band Asia and one of their songs were sort of a running joke in the movie. The lead character was harangued by his friends for having an Asia poster in his apartment. I was like, "Hey, what's wrong with Asia? I used to have one of their records!" I remember when Asia was pretty cool, but I guess now they are looked at with a laugh (as are many of the bands from the 80's). No matter, the music is still great. Certainly a lot better than some of the cuff-me-beat-me death metal on the radio today. Buy the CD, you won't be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Are You Kidding Me? This is Asia We're Talking About..........2006-10-31

What's with all the four and five stars for an Asia CD? Is this the Asia Groupie Convention camped out here on Amazon? I'm being generous here with three stars. This was a band of talented musicians who faded fast after their successful debut album. The critics weren't too thrilled with them for a reason: their material was mediocre. There's nothing earth shattering or groundbreaking here. If you're not familiar with the band borrow a cd from someone before you waste your money for two or three good songs.

3 out of 5 stars Good Compilation of Songs, Very Bad Sound Quality.......2006-05-02

I love all the songs on this cd. I can't argue with the selection, but when I plopped it into my cd play I was shocked at how bad the songs sounded. For a cd from a band like Asia to succeed you need to have a crisp sounding cd. The sound here is tainted...even when you turn it up. I would think there are better Asia greatest hits out there.

4 out of 5 stars Good compilation of one of the better 80's bands..........2005-10-19

Ok, I didn't give it 4 stars because being a purist I didn't like the stuff from the later albums (after Astra) as much as those early stuff. But I have fond memories as a teenager listening to Asia. Their music, for what is worth, is full of great textures and melodies. Do I think they are the epitome of great rock music or the end all of prog rock? No, but I give them due because their music moved me and still does: the guilty pleasures of their simple catchy riffs but with story and drama. I don't think Asia set out to revolutionize rock and roll in the 80's, they were just a group of seasoned musicians having fun without the trappings of the earlier days of prog rock glam. While many of my school mates listened to the likes of Ratt and the Crew (the real hair band stuff), Asia's music gripped me because it was full of drama as any true prog rock should be. Now, many of my buddies who sneer at Asia inevitably admit to have bought the first ablum because something about the band's music (amidst all the new wave bore of the early 80's) stood out.

Now I listen to much of what is being played in the FM stations and long for the days when music on the radio meant something. Just listen to the track "Voice of America" and you will realise the lyrics are so relevant now.

5 out of 5 stars Why tell this story? It's a good story, with better music!.......2007-03-11

There is nothing worse than a weak story linked together with weaker tunes. However, Once on this Island is operatic in its beauty, organic in its execution (not a note out of place!) and is bound together with a strong story, stronger performances, and some of the most upbeat and uplifting music I have ever heard. The music brings you to the Antilles and establishes the place of this island, with its symbitioc relationship with nature and its gods. And you will root for Ti Moune and her faith in her place in the world, and even though she doesn't get the guy, it could be argued that she gets something even better.

Give it a listen....

5 out of 5 stars Very Authenic and Beautiful Work.......2006-04-25

The team of Flaherty and Ahrens truly blew me away with "Ragtime", and I didn't anything could come close to that power. While "Once On This Island" is nothing like "Ragtime" in terms of gandeur, it still is a wonderful work filled with some wonderful music. The ensemble on this recording sounds exactly as they should in my opinion, and they perfectly depict people on a magical island. The story is also one that I enjoyed in that it was very simple, yet had a great message. While the vocal work provided by the ensemble is great, it is LaChanze who truly makes this recording soar. Her voice is like that of a goddess, and she makes all of the emotions of Ti Moune come alive, especially in "Waiting For Life", which is this recording's star number.

It may not be big, bold, or grand, but "Once On This Island" is a magical recording of a magical little musical that proves to be quite effective. It's authenticty and clever musicality are what make it great.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning and flawless Musical Fairy Tale .......2006-04-08

This musical represents all that is RIGHT with new musicals. Flaherty creates musical themes that recur throughout the piece and Ahrens' lyrics are brilliant. Through this musical, which I saw in NY 7 times, I was introduced to the talent of La Chanze and now as the lead in Color Purple, the world is getting another glimpse at what a great singer she is. Listening to her interpret a song is beautiful. For those who never had the privilege of seeing the show, we can all thank our stars that the production lives on forever in recording. Many other notable performers from Milton Craig Nealy (Rain) to Kecia Lewis Evans (Mama Will Provide) to Jerry Dixon (Some Girls)to Eric Riley (in every stand out number), this cast recording is worth every penny. I am on my 2nd copy and rapidly working toward my 3rd.

5 out of 5 stars superb musical.......2006-01-29

5 out of 5 stars Better than the first one.......2006-05-11

I received this album as a gift because I enjoy the first NX album. However, I do skip a couple songs on the first album because I don't care for the sound, genre, whatever, and I don't skip any tunes on this album because I enjoy all of them. The second album seems more eclectic than the last, but I do agree that the opening and closing modern Native American tunes are the best.

5 out of 5 stars Great traveling music!.......2006-03-19

I am in my vehicle often, on road trips between Iowa and Colorado to visit Grandchildren and take Girl Scouts to the mountains. I didn't realize what a lasting impression this CD made on my Girl Scouts and Grandchildren until one day the girls were in the car and suddenly all 7 began singing the opening Oijibwa song. They had learned it phonetically, just as I had. When 15 -16 year old girls say, "play the Northern Exposure music Gramma J.", you've got to guess it's a CD full of good music. I like to listen when I drive through unknown and unfriendly bumper to bumper traffic. It is soothing and rhythmically conducive to driving. Not to mention the good Northern Exposure memories.

3 out of 5 stars Only for hard core NXers.......2003-05-24

I bought the first CD and loved it, so i expected to love this one as well. This CD just isn't up to the same level as the first one though. the songs in large part are forgetable with the notable exeptions of the two native american songs at the beginning and end, the crane dance song (lay my love) and wrap your troubles in dreams. unless you just have to have everything NX related, want two good native american songs, or have the urge to try and teach a crane a mating dance, this CD just isn't worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent variety.......2002-07-14

I purchased this CD for music to accompany the digital pictures I took on a vacation to Alaska. What I didn't expect was to become somewhat addicted to certain selections. Now, I frequently listen to the CD in my car on the way to and from work. It is both relaxing and energizing. I particularly like anything by David Schwartz, who is responsible for the well known "Theme from Northern Exposure" (which is too short here--I wanted more). His other numbers on this CD, "The Ladder" and "Mooseburger Stomp" are rousing and fun. I fell in love with the beautiful, soothing, deep alto voice I heard in "Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams." What a surprise to learn that it belonged to Mary Ford (with Les Paul)! I hardly paid any attention to her in the 1950's. "Lay My Love" is infectious, anticipatory and wonderful. Who can resist the walking-waltz pace of "Un Mariage Casse?" Finally, Joanne Shenandoah will surely get her wish with her enchanting rendition of "I May Want a Man."

5 out of 5 stars Great Music from a Outstanding Show........2001-10-29

This album is the best. It has a lot of the great music from NX. I like it better than the original soundtrack. If you are an NX fan, there is no question you must buy this album!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Best Of Their Later Work.......2007-01-19

Sawyer Brown made their first real impact on "Star Search" many years ago as a somewhat goofy, pop-induced Country act. They made their mark with lightweight songs like "Betty's Bein' Bad" and "Step That Step." As they entered the 90's, Sawyer Brown held fast to their upbeat roots, but delved into deeper and sometimes very touching songs. This particular "Greatest Hits" plainly shows the listener that they're getting the top tunes from the group's albums from 1990-1995. What's amazing is that in only five years they did manage to build up such a catalogue worthy of being called "Greatest Hits."

Things start off with my personal favorite upbeat Sawyer Brown tune, "Some Girls Do." I actually requested that this tune be played at my wedding reception. It's quickly followed by "Thank God For You" and then the album takes a dark turn with "All These Years," which is, in my opinion, the toughest and greatest song ever put out by Sawyer Brown. It deals with not so much with adultery, but with what was happening that lead up to it. It's a great song. After that we get the humbling "Dirt Road" and another uptempo number in "This Time." "The Walk" follows that and shows us a more touching side to the band. "Trouble On The Line," another fun song about a broken heart comes next, followed by the decent "Cafe On The Corner" and "I Don't Believe In Goodbye." The last song on the album is "The Boys & Me" and it closes the album with a lighter touch than the songs that immediately preceded it.

Overall, this is a legitimate "Hits" album. Many other bands will toss a couple of modest hits and some filler tunes into a single album and try to pass it off as a "Greatest Hits" collection, but Sawyer Brown has enough songs in their catalogue to draw from to warrant two "Greatest Hits" collections.

If you enjoy punchy, upbeat Country that straddles that fine line between bands like Exile and Restless Heart, you're sure to enjoy this album from Sawyer Brown.

Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars phenomenal.......2006-11-02

This was a terrific album featuring many of Sawyer Brown's great hits like "Cafe on the Corner" and "All These Years." It offers a wide variety of songs and was quite good, I thought. If you are a fan of Sawyer Brown, odds are you will like this album.

5 out of 5 stars Its been awhile.......2005-09-13

Since i've listened to anything by Sawyer Brown. I remember them way back in the day being on Star Search and thinking. They are gonna be pretty big one day, i'm guessing from the fact that they have a couple greatest hits albums that its happened. This cd has a good amount of some S Brown hits from the period 1990-1995. I think this is a good intro to anyone that wants to get into Sawyer Brown.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Hits Collection.......2004-01-03

Some people probably still remember Sawyer Brown as the country act discovered on the original Star Search. Their music was somewhat flimsy but fun then. However, they quickly developed into a solid country act, as witnessed by this greatest hits collection. All 10 songs hit the Billboard Country top 5 singles, with "Thank God for You" and "Some Girls Do" going all the way to #1.

The band include a nice mixture of up-tempo songs and ballads here. Their up-tempo songs really swing, especially "Thank God for You," with its clever chorus, "I thank the bank for the money/ Thank God for you." Perhaps their best ballad is "The Walk," which went to #2 on the Country charts. The song brilliantly captures the fear that a child can feel when separating from his parents, with its haunting refrain, "Cause I took this walk you're walking now/ Boy, I've been in your shoes." Impressively, all of the songs were written or co-written by lead singer Mark Miller or other band members; the band clearly has depth and talent.

Like many older country bands, Sawyer Brown hasn't made much noise on country radio in recent years. However, they were signed to Lyric Street Records (home of Rascall Flatts and Shedaisy) in 2003, and they're still recording and touring. If you're not familiar with their music already or don't have any of their CDs, this greatest hits compilation is a terrific place to start.

5 out of 5 stars Fine introduction to their music.......2003-09-20

Sawyer Brown carved their own niche in country music with their brand of mostly lightweight, upbeat songs but with the occasional serious song. As their career progressed, the number of serious songs increased. This collection of their music covering the early nineties showcases both aspects.

The set begins with Some girls do, one of Sawyer Brown's best-known songs, typical of their upbeat music. Other songs here in similar vein include Thank god for you, The dirt road, This time, Trouble on the line and The boys and me.

Café on the corner is a very poignant song about hard times that shows the serious side of their music. Other reflective songs include All these years, The walk and I don't believe in Goodbye.

This is a wonderful collection of music by a group that may at first seem to be just like any other country band but isn't quite like any of the others.
