5 out of 5 stars Finally! .......2007-02-22

The La's always felt that Steve Lillywhite's high gloss, blended production sucked the life out of their Britpop skiffle, and these stunning radio sessions prove them right! Almost every track is superior to the previously released album version, conveying the propulsion and joy of live music with the bell clarity and razor precision of a studio recording. The harmonies are more prominent; the sound of each instrument more distinct; and the overall feel more energetic. For sheer song quality and performance value, The La's lone, self-titled full length will always be a classic, flawed or otherwise. But this new compilation, which includes a few b-sides and rarities, invites you to hear their timeless melodies again for the first time.

5 out of 5 stars You can't complain about pure La's.......2007-01-01

This excellent compilation of BBC sessions shows the varying faces and styles of the La's. From a hard, almost punk version of I Can't Sleep, to an electric version of There She Goes, these cuts give the listener a different take on La's favorites.

5 out of 5 stars A superb retrospective - God Save the BBC.......2006-11-29

Why did these performances stay in the BBC vaults for so long? They're brilliant! It's well known that singer Lee Mavers was unsatisfied with the sound of the La's only album. I'd like to know his reaction to this disc: the sound is crisp, the band is tight, the vocals are at least as good as on The La's. This is a great presentation of great songs - this release really breathes new life into tunes that have been on my playlist for fifteen years.

The track selection is a real insight into the band at its most vital. The singles are here, but so are a couple of b-sides and Calling All, which I haven't heard before. I'd go so far as to say that this should be considered a necessary companion to the (import, with bonus tracks) studio album - either one would serve as a compelling introduction to the band.

Now if they'd just tour the States!

4 out of 5 stars may you never lay your head down without a hand to hold.......2006-10-28

I purchased this album to maintain my collection of Martyn's output. Already he must be approaching the numbers of albums of Marc Bolan/T. Rex and Jimi Hendrix before venturing beyond the stratosphere into Grateful Dead territory.

I say that not as a criticism but as a compliment. Indeed John Martyn is very much like the Dead in his ability to provide us with variations on his material which add so much to the original compositions.

As to this album, I love each of the songs and arrangements on it and cherish their being made available at long last from the BBC archives. It is only a pity that John Peel could not be around to see these hit the light of day.

Each track on it's own is a testament to the talents of John Martyn as singer, songwriter and musician. Unfortunately, my only criticism of the album is that the order could have had a greater coherence and some attempt made to place the songs into a sequence of development. To me it makes no sense to begin the album with electric Martyn and to be followed a few songs later by the acoustic almost folkie Martyn.

That is the only flaw on an album which will be purchased mainly by completists which is a great shame.

John Martyn is a musician's musician and who'se influence extends far into many areas of the popular idiom. It is always a pleasure to hear him perform his work and I long for the day when he will visit this republic's shores in the future.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Introduction to Celtic Folk Rock!.......2001-05-17

Even if you think you only "might" be interested in this musical genre and/or Runrig, try BBC Session/Long Distance. You'll be convinced. There are several duplicate tracks on this two disc set,but they are all worth listening to twice. What a shame that this great band doesn't get more air play in the States. They deserve much greater exposure. Production values are excellent and the "live" tracks very well done. It is all I can do to stay in my seat when "Loch Lommand" gets going and "Alba" makes me want to book the next flight out;"Rhythm of My Heart" rivals Rod Stewart. The vast majority of the material is original and thoughtfully written. There is some real poetry here. I only hope that I get an opportunity to enjoy Runrig live someday, for now these CD's will have to do.

5 out of 5 stars A Trip In Time.......2000-08-19

I bought Runrig's tape, Long Distance, while in Scotland, and have played the microns off it! The beauty of Scotland is revealed in this album, bringing back memories of a people and land so wonderful as to be almost inconceivable. The songs in Gaelic are so soulfully sung, it bring tears to the eyes. I still don't know the meaning but it doesn't matter. Being of Irish blood, the somewhat rebellious songs made me yearn to return to a land torn between its people, some wanting freedom, others wanting British support. I cannot recommend these 2 CD's highly enough. Even if one has never been to the Scottish Highlands, tried Haggis, or seen the battlefields of "Braveheart", these CD's will take you there, just close your eyes, put the headphones on, and let Runrig take you away. I am buying another set, just in case (God forbid) they are no longer available in the future!

5 out of 5 stars Failte The Gaelic flame burns strong in Alba.......2000-04-03

If you are not already a listener to the music of Runrig then what are you waiting for. Long distance is more than a culmination of a lifetime in the world of music. Runrig are a band who are not afraid to change as they know the fans will come with them, on their latest "In Search of Angels" the sound changes again. But at the heart of every piece lies the Heartland of Scotland and the will to survive of all Celts, be they from Galicia in Spain or Shetland in the north. Without them the dream of the Scottish parliament would not be here, as they sang of in "Maymorning" "I'm alive again". But they have made such an impact, making the songs of the Heartland fashionable, such as Loch Lomond, whilst playing homage to what made the Scots people great in the "Mighty Atlantic/Mara", "Flower of the West" and "Siol Goraidh", Our indestructable will to survive.

Long live Alba and long live Runrig!

BBC Live And In Session (1978-1986, released 2005.) A collection of Motorhead BBC and concert recordings.

    INTRODUCTION:
When Ian "Lemmy" Kilmister was arrested and exiled from his old band, Hawkwind, he wasn't about ready to stop making music. After getting back on track, he formed a new trio called Motorhead, named for a song he originally performed back in his Hawkwind days. Over the years they would rise to fame as the founding fathers of thrash/speed metal. The band's popularity has never diminished. Like so many other British bands of the era, Motorhead had a number of BBC session recordings which had never been issued to the general public officially on CD - until now. This set features many different sources of unreleased Motorhead material, spanning two compact discs! Read on for my review on Motorhead - BBC Live And In Session.

    OVERVIEW:
Motorhead released the BBC Live And In Session CD September 1, 2005 in Great Britain and November 15, 2005 in the United States. The compilation consists of two CDs. The first disc consists of BBC In Session tracks, and the second consists of live concert recordings. The material here spans 1978-1986 - Roughly eight years of the band's career.

    REVIEW:
As a huge Motorhead fan, I jumped at the chance to pick up their BBC Sessions once they were released stateside. And I am regretful of my purchase of this edition of the album (more on that later.) But as for what this set gives you, if you're a Motorhead fan, you'll enjoy it. Essentially, this collection pulls tracks of two major types from Motorhead's past - BBC session tracks and live concert tracks. As for the BBC session tracks, they are great because you get to hear some alternative versions of songs from the band that are often neglected. And these are good takes of the songs, too! For instance, I actually prefer this version of Louie Louie over its better-known single counterpart. All of these alternate takes are solid, and definitely on par with their studio counterparts. The live material featured here is also good, capturing the band in that powerful state of performance that studio albums just can't. No, it's not quite No Sleep Till Hammersmith quality live stuff, but it's still solid. Everything on this compilation is excellent, and is recommended to any Motorhead fan. But this brings me to my complaint. There are two editions of this album - the rip-off version, and the excellent version. The excellent version features thirty-one tracks, the rip-off version only twenty-two. Unknowingly, I bought the rip-off. Both cuts are consist of two discs, but the rip-off deprives you of nine excellent tracks, including the Kerrang! Wooargh! Concert, some of the best material the BBC sessions offered! Ultimately, it's a very good set, just be sure you're buying the right edition!

    OVERALL:
I don't think I need to say a whole lot else. If you're into Motorhead, and already a fairly big fan, you're going to enjoy their BBC sessions. Just make sure you're buying the right version of the album - don't make the same mistake I did! It's good either way, but don't let yourself be deprived of so many excellent live songs. The final verdict here is simple. If you're a Motorhead fan, buy this album - but be sure you buy the thirty-one track version!

    EDITION NOTES:
This album is readily available in America, but the version readily available is the version with less tracks. Make sure you get the thirty-one track version. You might have to import it and pay a slightly higher price for it, but in the end, it will be worth any extra effort or cash you use to get it.

5 out of 5 stars UFO -BBC The Archive Series; In Session and Live in Concert.......2006-11-30

Check out a more accurate review look under ( UFO BBC Radio Live in Concert) where I mentioned this great and rare CD,Chapman only shares the guitar with Schenker on four songs, too bad this CD is not available for now but if you are a UFO (schenker era) fan this is a must to have these songs are diferent versions than the ones on the albums,or look under my reviews!

    4 out of 5 stars 4.5 Stars...Love Schenker? Then Get This.......2005-11-15

If you want to hear some fantastic Michael Schenker solos GET this one! The rest of the band sounds great too, vocalist Phil Mogg might never have sounded better.
Michael's playing only sounded more spectacular on Strangers in the Night.
It's mostly great fun to hear the different solos that Michael adds to the songs. That's something which so many Rock/Metal guitar players just don't do...EXPLORE the songs they wrote with new, improvised leads each performance. It shows how the player is feeling at the time, and allows the song to grow naturally. nyways, this cd is a practically perfect ecxample of a great Rock guitar player at his peak. Reccomended highly.

    4 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable.......2003-05-13

It's a lot of fun to hear the boys run through these songs without a lot of the distraction of background applause that live recordings bring. It doesn't match up to Strangers in the Night (nothing does) but there are times when this is the UFO disc that I'm looking forward to listening to when I get off work.

4 out of 5 stars Early Schenker at his best.......1999-08-23

This disk is a must have if you're are Michael Schenker fan.The first six tracks are live in the studio and the sound is superb. The rest of the cd is from live concerts, the first four of the live songs are from the same show that is on the BBC Radio 1 Live in Concert disk released in 1992 that has mostly Paul Chapman stuff.Great buy if you're into Michael Schenker.

5 out of 5 stars Andromeda - 'BBC Top Gear Sessions 1968 / Live At Middle Earth 1967' (Kissing Spell).......2007-07-10

Main reason I'm giving this title a five-star rating is because I had heard that it was a so-so quality rehearsal tape meant for completists only. No way! Sound quality is great, I thought. This ten track CD, apparently pulled from two different Andromeda dates, one a closed rehearsal and the other an actual in-studio session is a must-have for all fans of late '60's obscure psychedelia. It took me several years, in fact to finally land down a copy of this Kissing Spell pressing. Some cuts most of you have heard before are here like "Reason", "Looking For You", "Day Of Change" and "Return To Sanity". Several that I've never even known about are the previously unreleased "Woman You Need Me" (sounds like maybe a long lost Atomic Rooster song, but with a Ten Years After-like bluesy element), the low-key "Walking On Nails", "Over This Land" and the twelve-minute "Exodus" (once again, with a heavy bluesy feel to it). Line-up: John DuCann-guitar&vocals, Mick Hanksworth-bass&vocals and drums. Gotta have!!

3 out of 5 stars any money mark album is better than this one.......2005-03-17

if you're a completist, you're already going to buy this and you won't care what i say ... for everyone else, buy *any* money mark studio album, all of them are better ... the sound quality is a tad weird and all the songs are played a little too much off rhythm.

what's weird is i met money mark once and had him sign a copy of this cd. he said, "is this any good?"

i said, "it's not bad, but it's definitely not your best. it's my least favorite record of yours, but it still kicks the hell out of 99% of the music in the world."

he said, "i've never heard it, actually. it doesn't surprise me that it's not great -- i was really drunk when we did that show."
