Superb display by multi-talented songwriter.......2007-02-17
Eleanor's subject matter is always highly engaging and entertaining. Try "Suffer so Well" on this her sixth album. It is also amazing to find that she plays every instrument on the album except drums, and sings all the backing tracks. These are the art songs of the 21st century.
Don't take my word for it, Google Eleanor McEvoy and check it out!
This album deserves 5 stars!.......2007-02-04
The previous review hit all of the elements of how wonderful this album is - but one disagreement - it is truly a five, not three, star album - one anyone who loves great music would want to add to their collection. One other point - in the description of the album it states that SACD compatible equipment is needed to play the album - this is not the case - it can be played on any type of equipment. Please add this album to your collection - you won't be sorry!
A nice package.......2007-01-24
Eleanor McEvoy
Out There - Moscodisc Records MOSACD303
It is a very welcome back to Eleanor and her new CD. Bravely taking on almost all of the instrumentation and arranging this has turned into a very fine outing. Blessed with a voice that is instantly recognisable all the trademark elements are present. Sharp observational writing that is amusing, music that hooks you on the line and very accomplished playing. This time around she casts her net on, of course love and life, but also on the transient elements associated with our must have world.
The album is split into parts 1 & 2 and has a total of fifteen tracks. Kicking off with the self deprecating Non Smoking Single Female, a song about the difficulties of finding a partner is an amusing and accurate analysis of those rather sad wanted ads seen in many publications.
When you have a singer and writer of this quality it would be unfair to select out favourite tracks but To Sweep Away A Fool, Quote I Love You Unquote and Vigeland's Dream from part 1 are very fine.
Part 2's Three Nights In November is particularly poignant. Fields Of Dublin 4 has the silliness of our material and busy world down pat and The Way You Wear Your Troubles with its simple blues feel work well.
Mention should also be made of brilliant simple covers of Marvin Gaye's Mercy Mercy Me and Roll Um Easy from Little Feat's Lowell George, which are icing on this aural cake. This album has a beautiful sound to the recording, which shows Eleanor off for the fine artist she is.

It's good ear candy.......2006-01-29
It seems to me a lot of people are making this band something I have to disagree with. The first time I heard this band I was stoned and in a car and I was thinking; "$hit this is real cool" I was noticing Alice In Chains harmonies with Kim Thayil guitar solos and I dug it. At first I thought it was some new band on the radio for the post-grunge $hit eaters and I was about to cast it away, but than the vocal harmonies came.
I came to the conclusion that it was the product of radio friendly post-grunge that was created by fans somewhat tastefully. You can tell how derivative this is, how blunt the lyrics are about the slacker generation X movement. One bad thing is, In the song "Tapped" you just feel the drop D guitars making way to Nu-Metal post-grunge bands "ALL USED UP" with that raspy overly whiney Cobain-I-also-can voice makes me kind of weird. I tell myself I should progress forward, listen to new horizons. I am a die hard alternative 90's fan and that band is a guilty pleasure for a familiar ear. They are what they are, EAR CANDY...and if you can ignore the ridiculous lyrics and overly polished drop D chords...it is not a bad listen! But remember that this is not non-mainstream, this was MADE for mainstream radio and promoted by money grubbing executives, which makes you think; usually the industry succeeds in luring mediocrity to give them their hard earned money for generic music. However they did not manage it this time, which makes you think: Not the idealistic Indie fans or the bubble gum chewing football players bought this CD.
The sounds of 1994..........2005-08-06
Not as iconic as "Nirvana", "Dandelion" has a special place among my CD's for this great disc. Most of the tracks are memorable only as over-loud, endless chords - though that makes the disc a perfect time-capsule for the era of grunge. (Also, suffice it to say, because they didn't get the airplay of, say, "In Bloom" or "Smells like Teen Spirit", the lesser tracks here have the benefit of not having been played to death on Top-40 stations.) That said, "Dyslexicon" is graced by several songs which more than make up for the shapeless noise of the rest of the album - "Trailer Park Girl", an ironic ode to the goddess that lives in the trailer parks of our hearts; "Viva Kneival" which is a prolonged rock stunt which makes you feel like snapping some of your ribs; and especially "Weird Out", which kicks off with some guitar riffs that out-power more mainstream bands. I got this disc for "Weird Out", but like to break it out whenever I feel the need to trip back about a decade or so.
I Like It!.......2004-11-06
Although if you are looking into them, I recommend the first one before this. In comparison to "I Think I'm Gonna Be Sick," this one is much more lighter. But don't let that fool you! This band is hands down the best underrated grunge rock band! Take a break from the mainstream grunge, and give this a listen. You won't regret it!
Great and the first is better.........2004-10-23
I also am a huge fan of this band. I would hope they would come out with a new cd. Alot of people called them grunge fakers..but they had a cd out before this..in the midst of grunge hype and it got overlooked. The difference between the first one and this..is that this was more aimed to getting radio play i believe. They almost made it, as Wierd Me Out was getting played. This band is great i recomend checking them out..as you can find the cds pretty cheap. If you like Big Chief (who i think they sound like on there first cd), Mudhoney, Nirvana (of course, Truly..etc. Also check out the bomb art work from Marcus Durante (Zen Guerrilla singer)..who did art on the first one too..and does it for various other bands.
I heard a rumor.......2004-06-28
Love this record ! its still relevent today!!!
I think the VINES may have listened to this album a few times???
I heard a rumor in a chat room that Dandelion may release a new record in 2005? hope its true... buy this record if you dont own it already.

Classic[al] Stones.......2007-07-10
As both a huge Rolling Stones fan and a lover of classical music, I have to say this is one of the most enjoyable and interesting discs I own. Here are 11 of the Stones' best songs, as you have never heard them before. This cd is certainly a tribute to the melodic and lyrical genius of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and crew, but the impeccable London Symphony Orchestra and guest vocalists transform these catchy rock tunes into incredibly haunting and powerful musical sagas. The versions of "Ruby Tuesday" and "As Tears Go By" are really amazing and even tragic. "Sympathy for the Devil" has an operatic feel to it. The child-like innocence of "Dandelion" is really quite entertaining. Considering the Stones were really a blues band at heart, one wouldn't think initially that their repertoire would translate well into a symphonic format. But it does. There is only one way to enjoy this rare musical treat-buy this cd now!
Best CD I own........2003-11-04
I've had this CD for what seems like a lifetime now, and I still can't put it away. By far the most timeless CD I own.
Classical classics.......2002-11-12
The lively levi clad rebel music of the Stones is traded in for high brow tuxedo's and an orchestral sound with mixed results. Through the years I've played this disc for a different rendering of the familiar rock anthems. As stated by another reviewer you must not compare because one is rock and one is a classical treatment of a rock song. The problem is that it is hard to seperate comparisons. Beginning with "Street Fighting Man" the Stones anthem that was banned because of the resulting violence it incited, the disc is a subdued and barely recognized shell of the original Richards and Jagger penned number. The translations work at times like the interesting versions of "Paint It Black"and the hauntingly beautifully dark "Symphony For the Devil" that sounds like a theme from play. For the most part the pure musical numbers are better than the others where vocals exist becuse of the inevitable vioce comparisons. An exception might be Marianne Fathfull's rendering of "Ruby Tuesday." Mick Jagger is featured on one song, "Angie," for a slightly different vocal interpretation that is slower and more dramatic. The London Symphony Orchestra produces a lush backdrop for the familiar songs associated with guitar and rock and roll. Taken alone it is a nice sampling of the Stones music but it is very hard to not make comparisons. They are two different genres and should be treated as such. Nonetheless I prefer the original versions but find these songs to be more soothing and sophisticated. As alternatives to the originals it sounds good but not great.
Excellent choice.......2002-08-27
If you enjoy Classical versions of rock music, this is one that you must get. I love it. They have excellent version of the songs. This album is THE album that turned me on with Classical version of Rock music.
Forget the original Stones stuff--just enjoy for itself.......1999-07-23
Interesting form of Stones music--definitely not for the Stones purist, but not bad if just taken as music to enjoy by itself.

Tractor-'Before,During And After The Dandelion Years'(Ozit).......2003-12-16
Very nice compilation release of tunes from a long-running talented UK underground psychedelic band.'Before,During...' includes rare and unreleased material.According to my sources,Tractor originally existed from 1969-1991.Recently they've reunited for various gigs around their home turf.Tracks I was most impressed with were "Jester",the Floyd-ish "Circuits Drawn","Steve's Hungarian Novel",Watching White Stars",the freak flag anthem "About Yourself",and "It's Got To Be Right".The folkish "Who Am I" isn't bad either. There's a good four song segment that was recorded at one of the big outdoor festivals in which they played."Bring What You Expect To Find","Drilling Hundreds",the jamming "Little Girl In Yellow" and "Sarcastic Bastard" rounds out this truly fantastic introduction(to me,at least) of a great psych ensemble.Should appeal to fans of the Deviants,Hawkwind, and Monster Magnet.Highly recommended.

A classic in my own little world..........2005-06-09
I don't know anyone else who knows this band. The first time I've heard of them was when I bought "Dyslexicon" really cheap in a dusty second hand shop... and I loved it so much I just wanted more Dandelion. So I went back to the same shop and found "I think I'm Going To Be Sick"... It managed to make me forget all about "Dyslexicon" and how much I cherrished it.
The two albums (which, sadly appear to be the only ones) are very different in ways of production. It is an interesting contrast... "Dyslexicon" has a massive, almost saturated sound with only four members (the singer on guitar) while this album sound a lot cheaper and features the band as a five piece (the singer not on guitar). If you like albums like "Bleach" by Nirvana or any of the other Grunge and Sub Pop bands then give these two albums a chance.
"37 used & new".......2003-08-07
If the above doesn't say it all. People can't even give away this contemptible chunk of excrement. Dandelion (Columbia Records, 1993) is obviously one of the slew of horrible bands caught up in the major labels' post-Nirvana orgy of band signings. (That's the major labels for you - always playing catch-up.) The approach seems to have been the same as that used by net fishermen - cast those nets wide over the open seas, haul in everything, and hopefully you'll find one or two nice catches (the "next Nirvana") amongst an ocean's worth of garbage which can be chucked back overboard. Dandelion is one of the bands that got chucked back overboard. There is not a single original idea or note anywhere on this CD - just incredibly awful, derivative, fake grunge that makes Candlebox sound like the Beatles by comparison. The singer ("Kevin" according to the liner notes - the band members are only identified by their first names, wow, how cool and down-to-earth!) is an even less talented singer than that guy from Blind Melon who OD'ed around this time, mercifully putting an end to that band's career. Even the CD's intentionally "weird" cover art and its title are cynical attempts at seeming nihilistic and "edgy" (oh-so-trendy in the early 90s), although they turn out to have exactly that effect on the listener. This CD makes me sick - sick with despair that the once-respectable Columbia label stooped so low as to sign these clowns.
My all-time FAVORITE CD.......2002-11-12
I used to be a huge fan when these guys played the clubs in Philly. While this album is a little rough on the production side (they ought to let lead guitarist Carl Hinds go in and re-mix it) it's got some of the finest lyrics and best grooves you'll ever hear. No music collection is complete without it.
Awesome CD!!.......1999-01-06
This CD has everything fans of groups like Nirvana love... awesome guitars, booming drums, deep bass, and grungy gritty vocals. Dandelion shines on songs like Waiting for a Ride and Onion Field. I personally recommend this CD to anyone who is a fan of alternative music.

simply wonderful.......2004-07-30
bottom line: incredible lyrics, incredible guitar, incredible voice. you won't regret this purchase!
+3/4 -- Charming, laid-back electric folk-rock.......2004-04-10
There are two elements of this album that stand out in immediate relief. First is the exquisite recording quality, a sound that leaps from the speakers with an articulation uncommon to both indie and major-label releases. Second is the inscrutably memorable opening track, with a bluesy slide guitar and harmonica hook that drive the title's refrain deeply into one's song memory. Hum "Stuck in the Middle With You" (or something from Sheryl Crow's debut) in your head and you'll get the idea.
The rest of Holley's fourth album is a mellower affair, pleasantly taking advantage of the production quality, but never quite living up to the spark of the lead. At times she sounds like an Americana version of UK singer Donna Lewis, with perhaps a twist of Jewel's (or '60s folky Melanie's) naiveté and Suzanne Vega's sophistication. The warmth of Holley's voice, and her laid-back delivery, adds mood to the music more than it carries a lyrical message. What sticks in with the listener are the melodies and musical colorations more than the story details. Holley's voice is so pretty that it can be difficult to focus beyond its sound as an instrument.
"Henry's" is more effective in communicating the song's rainy-afternoon setting, delineated by the song's electric piano and laconic vocal, than revealing the protagonist's story. Similarly, "Waiting for the Whales to Come" strikes home more with its loopy bass-heavy mix than its tale of whale watching. Several of Holley's songs sketch memorable characters or details, but the vocals require either intense concentration or lyric sheet reading to fully gather the stories. For the most part, Holley blends into the electric folk-rock backings, rendering this more mood music than statement. That's not necessarily a bad thing - this is an exceptionally pleasant spin - but it's probably not what a singer-songwriter aims for.
3-3/4 stars, if allowed fractional ratings.
Southern Comfort.......2004-01-31
One of the best albums of 2003 was this release from Mississippi native Claire Holley, and it is in the same ever-expanding bag of Americana roots rock that includes Tift Merritt, and such veterans as Lucinda Williams.
Claire's approach is more Southern blues-oriented than many other Americana female singer/songwriters, who tend to lean on country and folk-rock inflections, but those Southern roots do show through on DANDELION, particularly on the album's opening track "6 Miles To McKenney"--a track that, if this were still the 1970s or if corporate radio would give it a chance, could be a very big hit. Claire is an effective enough vocalist, and her guitar skills are not too shabby either.
For anyone with a taste for Americana and roots-rock, DANDELION is the perfect form of Southern Comfort.
She's a songbird.......2003-10-01
This album has thoughtful, sometimes funny, songwriting, catchy melodies and, above all, the lovely voice of Claire Holley. Keep an eye on this rising singer-songwriter.
GET A LIFE!.......2003-08-12
Contrived vacuity and forgetable monotony -- with a condescending attitude. Don't bother.
