Amazing album! Pop at its best!.......2007-07-12
It is unfortunate that The Click Five has an attached "tween pop" reputation remnant from their first album Greetings From Imrie House. In their sophomore album, listeners will find more rock roots than before, which adds to their credibility. This is highly due to their new sound of their new lead singer, Kyle Patrick. Modern Minds and Pastimes shows great growth in the music and in the band. It's still power pop but now with a rock edge. Every song is crafted in such a way that no instrument nor voice is overpowering. In more ways than one, it is a tribute to pop music over the last half century, especially the '70s and '80s. The pop gems on this album are extremely well crafted. Each song can easily stand on its own as a single: Great guitar hooks and catchy melodies. And, of course, they continue to do things with the keyboard and synthesizer that you would rarely find in today's pop music. Kudos to keyboardist Ben Romans, whose name appears in every song information, and to the rest of the band for writing such great works of art!
Like I mentioned earlier, it is unfortunate that in the past The Click Five has been shoved under the same categories as pop-record-company-engineered singers and bands. Really, how many pop bands today write their own music? And write it well?
I'm not expecting this album to do well in the first stages of its release, but as time goes on and people discover that The Click Five is a band that has what it takes to last, Modern Minds And Pastimes is going to be a big hit.
Excellent Sophomore Effort.......2007-07-01
I got this album because I loved "Just the Girl." I never bought Greetings from Imrie House, but I thought I'd go ahead and give this one a chance. I am so glad I did! The band's original sound was fun and catchy, but deeply adolescent. Modern Minds and Pastimes shows a significantly more mature sound and moderately more mature subject matter. It sounds like these boys have at least lived a little bit. Most importantly I played it through once, loved every minute, and immediately started it over again because I just couldn't get enough!
A mix of '70s, '80s, '90s, and modern music influences make this album a winner.......2007-06-28
This album is incredible. Catchy tunes will get you hooked. The lyrics revolve around young love. This album is definitely better than Greetings From Imrie House. This album includes many influences from past music influences. From disco techno synthesizers in "Headlight Disco" to catchy melodies in "Flipside," each track carries its own individual characteristics. Also, slower mellower songs like "Mary Jane" and "Empty" will get you thinking about that relationship that's falling apart. On the other hand, "When I'm Gone" and "Long Way To Go" offers heavy rock tunes which takes The Click Five to a more "rock" edge in their music. Moreover, all the tracks offer a broad range of tunes to capture a wide range of listeners. Bottom line... Five Stars All The Way.
modern minds and pastimes = LOVE.......2007-06-27
The Click Five's sophomore album, Modern Minds and Pastimes is impossible not to fall in love with. It's obivious that the members of The Click Five put their heart and souls into the lyrics and music, working hard to make music that was both meaningful and catchy at the same time. I've been an obsessed fan of The Click Five for years now, and when Eric Dill left the band, I was thouroughly dissapointed. All I could think was, it's all downhill from here...but I was definetely wrong! Their new addition to the band, Kyle Patrick has a different voice than Eric and brings a different sound but he is just as enjoyable as Eric, maybe even more! The tracks on this album make you just want to dance and sing-a-long, and get stuck in your head for days. And for once, it's a good thing! haha Their new album is absolutely addicting and made me fall in love with the band and their music all over again. I didn't know it was possible, but I love The Click Five even MORE than I had before. Modern Mind's and Pastimes: ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL. I would suggest it to anyone and everyone who was looking for great music and tunes that'll put a smile on their face. =)
Good Pop-Rock Melodies Missing.......2007-06-26
Most sophomore albums fall short for trying too hard. After listening to this one, it is plainly obvious that the Click Five is trying too hard not to sound like they're trying too hard. In a nutshell, the short, uptempo rock songs with a crisp hook have been replaced by songs in the vein of "It Ends Tonight" by All American Rejects. The choruses supplied by the genious songwriting of Adam Schlesinger are also absent this time around, and thus the album is boring. Its not that the Click Five are not talented, but they clearly are missing their original singer on this record. Bands that change their sound on their second album usually end up in the gutter, even if it takes awhile (just ask the Spin Doctors, Third Eye Blind, Hootie and the Blowfish, Good Charlotte, etc.) This album is not that bad, it is not that good either. And when you are strictly a singles-oriented pop band, great hooks are essential and these songs just don't have them. It was impossible not to bob your head or tap your feet and hum along to their previous album. This album just dosen't have any magic like that, and each individual song manages to fall short in some way.

"Lil' Wyyyyte!!!!".......2007-06-28
I agree with all the other reviews of this album...Just do me a favor and have alot of highway ahead of you when u put this in your cd-player...It's just marva-lous...Songs like "Get High"(listen to the violins) makes me feel glad to be alive and free..They move my soul.. "Suicide" (when it's 2:00 A.M) and your on the road by yourself, just ridin, chillin, headin to the house or something, and "Fu*k'd Up", (when you reachin your destination of your road-trip).Ima HUGE Hypnotize Mindz fan, Three 6 fan, etc.. Got ALL they muzik, even some underground.. I only wish 106 & Park, BET, MTV, etc would give Three 6 the credit they deserve, but their music is targeted to a specific group of people ( Real Niggas) not EVERYBODY like that bull-**** that's out there now.... Sorry.....uhh,, BUY THIS ALBUM!!!!!
You Thought Your Boy Done Overdosed!.......2007-06-27
As the Hypnotize Minds label (and Three 6 Mafia specifically) gets thinner and thinner, there is still talent left on their short roster. Lil Wyte, a mostly underground MC who broke through with tracks like "Oxycotton" and "Acid", has remained very consistent with his music. Even though his "hits" probably never got play on the radio, you can almost guarantee every dirty south Hip-Hop fan knows the name Lil Wyte. With two successful albums already under his belt (2003's "Doubt Me Now" and 2004's "Phinally Phamous"), Wyte is back with his 3rd studio album, "The One and Only". As always, DJ Paul and Juicy J are behind the boards to deliver the raw production that they always come with. Rather suprisingly, Lil Wyte doesn't have guests on the album, with the exception of Project Pat on three cuts where he's on the chorus. Other than that, it's just Lil Wyte doing his thing.
Some of the standout cuts on here are "Feelin' Real Pimpish" with Project Pat delivering a perfect chorus, and the laid back production really compliments Wyte's flow well. "I Got That Candy" has a smooth chorus with Wyte giving his ode to candy paint. "Suicide" is a track where Wyte spits fire about how he feels and how he wants to end his life. "Get Wrong" has that intensity you're going to feel when listening to a Lil Wyte album, and so does "Choppa On Da Back Seat", "We Ain't Cool", and "Talking Ain't Walking". He delivers his mandatory drug raps on "F***** Up", "Get High", "Do It Fluid". He lets you know he has paper on "Cake" and "Gettin Money Boy". I really can't say there is a bad song on here. If you're a fan of Hypnotize Minds and Three Six Mafia, then pick up Lil Wyte's third album. It won't disappoint.
ANOTHER HCP CLASSIC.......2007-06-16
This album is another Three 6 Mafia Produced BANGER! If you Love Three 6/HCP your gonna love this one beats are hot lyrics go right along wit it NICE ONE WYTE U 3-0 HOME BOY ...

Classic Music!.......2007-06-27
I was aware of the existence of Simple Minds in the mid-'80's. I was familiar with "Don't You (Forget About Me)", of course, and I heard them on Saturday Night Live doing that song and "Sanctify Yourself". As a Christian, I loved that title, and I heard one person consider this band in the same category as U2 and ATF, being mainstream bands of Christians.
I am not an expert on the lyrics, but I don't see anything I object to (I may be wrong) by this band. I really love their musical style.
Favorite tracks are "Don't You (Forget About Me)", "Promised You A Miracle", "Alive and Kicking", "Glittering Prize", "Sanctify Yourself", "Ghostdancing", "Speed Your Love To Me", "Life In A Day", "Let There Be Love", "Stand By Love", and "Belfast Child".
Good for 1 song.......2007-05-15
I bought this CD for 1 song and that's the only one on the CD that I like.
Something is Missing.......2007-01-11
I got this complilation for my son. When my son and husband were reading the package they both asked "Where is 'New Gold Dream (81,82,83,84)'"
How can a Simple Minds Compilation NOT have that song ?
Otherwise, it is a decent collection and a very good price for a 2 disc set.
Missing Tracks.......2006-09-20
I'm surprised that this compilation of the Best of Simple Minds omits two of their best recordings: "New Gold Dream" and "Book of Brilliant Things." I suggest buying the "New Gold Dream" and "Sparkle in the Rain" CD's to get those tracks.
A very good collection.......2006-08-19
The majority of the older "prime cuts": for Simple Minds were on this CD. As a 20-yr. fan there are a few I would have added as I much prefer the older material over the newer.
If you are looking for a good collection of Simple Minds, I highly recommend this CD. For those of us who have all the CD's, this is a good way to cruise w/the band w/o changing CD's or shuffling!!

Greatest Hits...Lite.......2005-02-06
Far from comprehensive, this collection is ok for the casual listener, but lacks the strength to pull off showcasing the band.
Offhand, the edited versions of "Alive and Kicking" and "Sanctify Yourself" really are somewhat disappointing; they just do not compare to the album versions.
There are some catchy tunes here that aren't widely known, "See the Lights" just is impossible not to like, as is "Belfast Child". Everbody knows "Don't You (Forget about Me)".
Crucial omissions from "Sparkle in the Rain" and "New Gold Dream" pretty much relegate this album to simply ok.
Even the newer greatest hits collection falls short; Simple Minds can't be summed up in 1 or 2 CDs.
A hidden gem.......2004-03-23
Simple Minds produced some of the greatest music--ever. Their best years were these--from 1981 to 1992. They sound like an '80s band, but their lyrics are far more powerful than a lot of bands of that decade. It's also great mood music as the lyrics are very stirring emotionally and really connect with the inner self in a way that no other music does. "Alive and Kicking" is just good music; it celebrates being alive. "Don't you forget about me"--we all remember from the Breakfast Club. "Promised You A Miracle" is a mood song that pokes fun at the times--the greed and materialism of the '80s and mocking the idea that money could buy happiness. "Sanctify Yourself" has a Christian overtone to it and touches on the themes of redemption. "The Belfast Child" is a moving ballad about Northern Ireland and a plea for peace and harmony between the warring factions. "Up On the Catwalk" is about life's complexities. "Let There be love" is a very powerful ballad on relationships--the line "She leads you to Heaven's door, then leaves you for dirt" is especially powerful. Unfortunately, that line describes far too many romantic relationships today. "Someone Somewhere In Summertime" is probably the greatest song ever written. It's about a summertime love that is more than a summer fling and that she was the only person in the world who understood you. It's a song laced with sadness and hope in equal measure. All in all, this is an album from a band who should have enjoyed the same kind of success as the Beatles.
The Songs are GREAT!.......2002-08-28
Well, yes... for the price. I give Simple Minds 5++ stars, I gave this CD 4 stars; but compared to the "The Best Of Simple Minds" imported collection CD I would give it less than 3. Why? Because all of these songs ARE included in the "The Best Of Simple Minds" collection, not only that; they are complete not like this one in which some songs are shorter, the ones I can remember from the top of my head are "Alive and Kicking" and "Sanctify Yourself". Besides, the CD is named "Glittering Prize" but, for crying out loud "Glittering Prize" is NOT included! (in the imported [remastered] version "Glittering Prize" IS included but costs more).
I owned this CD for 10 years, and the songs never got old to me, I was always wondering how to get my hands on more Simple Minds music which used to be so hard to get (all I could find was Glittering Price wherever I'd go), when the "Best Of" came along I grabbed it as quick as I could. My suggestion: Buy the "The Best Of Simple Minds" (32 songs collection) you really do get more for the money, the imported version is the best. It has all of these songs in full, plus "Glittering Prize", "Ghostdancing" and "Life In A Day" which are definitely worth the cost. The only flaw is that "New Gold Dream 81 82 83 84" is not there which is to me, the best song from Simple Minds. But no matter! Find that song in the album with the same name and enjoy!
A Good Listen.......2002-06-13
There are a few bands that provide a good representation of the generation that I grew up in. Simple Minds is one of those bands. Anyone who was around in the `80s has heard this band at one time or another whether they know it or not, probably from the "Breakfast Club" theme.
"Glittering Prize" is a compilation of twelve of their hits from 1981 to 1992. The heart of the band stayed the same for this time as several bassists and drummers came and went. Jim Kerr fronts the band with a smooth, hypnotic voice that helps give Simple Minds its unique sound. Charlie Burchill on guitars and Michael McNeil on the keys round out the band.
Simple Minds composed all of the songs that appears on this album, except for "Don't You (Forget About Me)", which was actually written by Keith Forsey with a few changes by the Minds. After listening to this album (or just knowing the Minds) you can tell that it wasn't written by the band.
This is a definitely hit filled album. With great songs like "Someone, Somewhere In Summertime" "Promised You a Miracle" and "All the Things She Said". "Waterfront" is the classic Minds sound with Kerr's powerful voice, and the band's much bigger sound than its size that would dominate their sound into the next millennium. The album opens with "Alive and Kicking" setting the tone for the album of just plain good song-writing and musicianship. "Sanctify Yourself" shows that the Minds can turn up the heat and sound a little more raw when they want to. My favorite track is the hypnotic "See the Lights".
Since the Minds have been around for so long, starting with "Glittering Prize" is not a bad idea. It is a well assembled album and flows well. If you prefer live albums, definitely start with the excellent "Live In the City of Light".
Re: Business as usual.......2001-07-26
A reviewer here has mentioned that this collection misses Simple Minds' first seven albums, but in fact it misses the first five: Album #6 which is called "Celebration" is a compilation of the songs from their first five releases. Glittering Prize picks up tracks starting with the "New Gold Dream (81 82 83 84)" (album #7), which coincidentally was their debut in the U.S., and ends with "Real Life" (1991), including only one song (Belfast Child) from the highly politically themed "The Street Fighting Years" (1989). The retrospective was issued in Europe with 16 tracks, but the US version was somehow stripped down to 12 cuts only. In any case if you think about it, Celebration put together with Glittering Prize is a more definitive greatest hits package. However compared to some other bands such as Ultravox or Men At Work which have numerous compilations out there, bands such as the Scottish Simple Minds or Australian Icehouse have hardly any. To do justice is to issue a decent and comprehensive two-disc anthology for S.M. so that the younger generation who cannot or don't want to purchase all of their previous releases could have a quick overview of what Simple Minds has to offer. Below I am including the album discography for the band to date.
[Update in 2005] Interestingly enough, just a few months after my review was first published in July of 2001, S.M. issued a record of cover songs, followed by a two-disc comprehensive anthology much like the one I had requested. There has also been a series of digital remasters of all of their albums up to 1998's Neapolis. What we now need is a box set of the original 12-inch remixes, B-sides and rarities!
1. Life In A Day (1979) 2. Real To Real Cacophony (1979) 3. Empires And Dance (1980) 4. Sons And Fascination (1981) 5. Sister Feelings Call (1981) 6. Celebration (1982) 7. Just as I Remember.......2007-05-31
Often records I one loved 20 years ago don't hold up well to the test of time. Book of Love's records, Killing Joke's "Brighter Than a Thousand Suns" and several others fall into this category. That said, I bought "Sparkle in the Rain" on vinyl when it first came out way back in the mid-1980s. After being introduced to Simple Minds via "New Gold Dream" (on limited edition gold vinyl even...) this was a welcome addition to my record collection. I remember being amazed at the driving rhythms and the powerful vocals. I hadn't listened to or even thought of the record until a few weeks ago when someone off-handedly mentioned Simple Minds telling me "I'm alive and kicking." That made me seek out and replace my long-missing LP with this CD. I'm glad I did and am enjoying it right now as I take a break from writing a thesis.
Sparklle In The Rain.............2007-02-23
Outstanding tunes . . . Speed Your Love to Me.... Memories of a time past and present....
Magical! One Of Their Best Albums!.......2006-05-28
Simple Minds came closer than ever before to all-out rocking on this album. They do rock here, but they still exhibit skillfully played musical shadings. Highly inventive, underrated guitarist Charlie Burchill steps forward and rocks, but not without his rhythmic subtlety. At the time, this album was criticized for being poorly mixed and sounding muddy, but I quite like that thick din of sound. I haven't heard the remaster, so I hope they haven't botched it.
"Up on the Catwalk" kicks things off with rumbling thunder and haunting keyboards. One of SPARKLE's best songs despite borrowing the already overdone U2 theme "I'll be there tonight." Singer Jim Kerr delivers a fantastically wordy vocal that moves into improvisation towards the end of the song.
"Book of Brilliant Things" is good but not my favorite, although it grows on you with that catchy guitar hook.
"Speed Your Love To Me" and "Waterfront" are the album's glorious centerpieces. Simply brilliant and uplifting (and totally rockin'!)
"East at Easter" is a slow burner that builds with subtle intensity.
"Street Hassle" is one of Lou Reed's best songs and SM actually improve on the original, giving it a smoother, more organic quality. Fantastic orchestration. And, let's face it, Kerr has a much better voice than Reed. Lou must've approved because he sings (or, rather, speaks) on SM's "This Is Your Land" from STREET FIGHTING YEARS a few years later.
"White Hot Day" - not the best, but still a good song with musings about "time."
"'C' Moon Cry Like A Baby" is another favorite. This one has an infectious swing.
"The Kick Inside Me" is the hardest rocking song on the album.
"Shake Off The Ghosts" is floating serenity. Keyboardist Michael McNeil, so integral to the whole album, really takes this instrumental to a place of wonderment. A beautiful way to finish.
It's wonderful to hear an album that rocks without banging you over the head with feedback, distortion and the like as so many bands do today. People who call this the start of their U2-style bombastic phase are really missing the point.
The Best Simple Minds Album.......2005-02-07
This album sounds as fresh in 2005 as it did when I first bought it in '83. Amazing stuff
Wow...this album takes me back.......2002-10-08
The first time I heard Waterfront (listening to KROQ while on vacation in Orange county back in 1984) two things became very clear to me...one, that Sparkle in the Rain was a must-own album and two, that it would be years before Portland, Oregon would ever have a radio station as cool as KROQ (actually, it took twelve years)

Lil Wyte is the most under rated rapper of all time. He's more ganster than 90% of all rappers out there whether they are underground, commercial, black, white, whatever...
Unexpected From A White Dude.......2006-02-20
When I first heard this album, I swear I did not know that he was caucasian. I should have figured from his name, but hey, we all make mistakes. Lil Whyte is truly a unique artist, everything from the way he raps to how he delivers is just crazy! I like the way he introduces his album with a definite head and body banging track. This album is definitly one to grab if you are into that "rugged south" muzik. As a matter of fact, other than Vanilla Ice (excuse me for comparing the two) Lil Whyte is paving the way for caucasian rap artists.

Customer Reviews:
Timeless.......2006-11-17
I purchased this in junior high school from those Columbia house 12 cassettes for a penny deals and of all the things I got over 20 years ago, I still listen to it.
It stands the test of time in terms of production value, solid lyrics and compelling rythms.
The last album of Simple Minds I can remember is in 1995 the did something, quite good, but this is their benchmark.
Once upon a time, they used to make albums as good as this one..........2006-05-23
It is hard to imagine a better album from Simple Minds. Indeed, as another reviewer put it, the only other great song from the band not found in here is "Don't You (Forget About Me)". Still, the album is loaded with solid tracks, including the title track, "Alive and Kicking" and "Sanctify Yourself".
With "Once Upon a Time", Simple Minds contributed to mold the sound of the eighties along with others like U2, Peter Gabriel, The Smiths and Tears For Fears. Indeed once upon a time, they used to make albums as good as this one.
A watershed for Simple Minds.......2006-02-23
I bought this on tape back in '85 based on the appeal of "Don't You (Forget About Me)" and thought that song would be on this album. I was disappointed to learn the band had deliberately left out that song because it wasn't the sound they were going for, but I was pleased this album was still very listenable. "Alive and Kicking" is my favorite track as well as being a smash hit. The piano interlude on that song is genius. I also like "Sanctify Yourself," "Ghostdancing" and "All the Things She Said." Charlie Burchill's guitar work is stellar and Jim Kerr has a great pop voice backed by excellent harmonies. I can understand why this was Simple Minds' international breakthrough.
Their Most Fully Realized Artistic Studio Statement!!.......2006-01-04
This was the first Simple Minds album that I bought
and I loved the whole thing from start to finish!
My introduction to them was of course, 1985's
"Don't You Forget About Me", but Jim Kerr's
"Morrisonesque" voice was so compelling that I had
to dig deeper and low and behold, due to this album and
their other great masterwork "Simple Minds:
Live In The City Of Lights", I was turned out and
transformed by this european group's orchestral synths,
soaring crying guitars, power-rock drumming and the
voices of both Jim Kerr and Robin Clark, who were
putting it down in a big way!
Love this album here!...And if you like this,
then check out "Live In The City Of Lights"
and you will get the whole gist of
what Simple Minds was about!
Rocks From Start To Finish.......2005-06-29
There aren't many albums today that you can listen to from start to finish and love every song - Simple Minds shows how. It's certainly different from the previous albums - but then if it were the same people would complain about it anway. All that hot air about their bombast is rubbish. Once Upon A Time in its own right is one hell of an album, that if you like the sound you'll love it all the way through, and if you didn't then you'd save a couple of bucks so good on you.
Ghostdancing, Oh Jungleland, Sanctify Yourself - I could be listing all the tracks but these are simply alive and kicking. And Robin Cook adds a touch to this album that makes it special, you want to hear her in every track. She did for Simple Minds what Oleta Adams did for Tears For Fears in Sowing the Seeds - another revolution but that's another story. And rightfully they have her winding up Alive and Kicking during the Amsterdam tour, I wish that was on record (sadly it's not the same one as that captured in the Live in the City of Light double album)
I only wish they'd release this complete with all the B Sides and extended versions - the extended version of All The Things She Said is an absolute gem - they simply don't make them like this anymore.

Music of the people.......2005-04-23
On Eagles Wings is most definatly inspired.... Latin Music is great if you understand itm but I have not heard any conversations in Latin lately. The most important aspect of liturgy is the participation of the assembly and if the assembly (or most of it) does not understand what is being sung or said What's the use? Catholic Tradition is great kept alive on CD for those who want to walk down memory lane but it is a Vatican 2 church......deal with it or get out and join one of those rougue churches that say mass in Latin and stop trying to move backwards. There is nothing more powerful than a singing actively participating church.......let's not stiffle the voice of the Body of Christ.
Good But Not Haunting Or Mysterious........2005-02-27
Hello, this music is good but it is not haunting, mysterious,Otherworldly,or timeless like Gregorian Chant or The Latin Mass now all I can say is that we as catholics threw out 1400 years of beautiful music for junk like "On Eagles Wings".Though To the person who said they prefer this to the pre-vatican 2 dirge music you are very close-minded and devoid of art and beauty and judging by what you said you are part of what I call the weak generation of Catholics who are only catholic on paper and have no sense of history for your very beautiful and mysterious church. Most people from that generation see the catholic church only after vatican 2 and you forget about the past councils and teachings of the Catholic church and it's history,I mean there is a reason they kept it so long it was for it's goodness(if it was bad it would not lasted 1400 years) as a priest on EWTN said to those who say "That is so pre-vatican 2" "So was Jesus." You see Latin Is very Beautiful and Mysterious language and it is a very catholic thing I mean whats more catholic then Gregorian Chant or the Latin Mass it's timeless like the church itself we as catholics need to start reclaiming are heritage from the likes of liberal priest and bishops of the 60's generation regardless of what they say there do as you please Mass is not in the spirit of Vatican II which allowed the use of vernacular in the Mass but it did not intend for Latin and Gregororian Chant to disappear it said to preserve it and give it, it's proper place that is what has been the intention of every pope since including this one they have all encouraged the use of Latin and Gregorian Chant in the mass.
How can anyone one not like it,it's very beautiful and it's been around for 1400 years how can one say that singer songwriter stuff which no one will remember in 50 years be better then this it's like seeing heaven and saying you prefer the world(alot of people unfortunatly do this.) Though to ansewer the question of it being to sad yes it is very somber and mournful but thats because the sacrifice of mass is a very solemn ceromony it was never meant to be celebrated in rock or jazz or polka or any other abuses by certain clergy. If alot of these ignorant catholics only knew what took place at the mass they would understand. You know you should be proud of the fact you are catholic because we have many gifts the protestants don't have(In the sacrements, the liturgy, the art and the music.) So I say to you now even you prefer the vernacular have respect and appreciation of what came before you in are Holy Catholic Church. Oh by the way I am 19 about to be 20 and Vatican II was a good thing it retouched are faith as Cardinal Francis Aziz said. Though I believe many people misinterpret it.
I suggest watching EWTN alot or really studying your faith and I like both Novus Ordo And Tridentine Rite.
More of a rant not a review but these songs have there moments and there are many Vernacular songs I like.
Dominus Vobiscum.
Et Cum Spirtu Tuo.
Very Good Traditional Hymns.......2004-05-30
It sounds like you are in Church, and that is what I was looking for. I especially like the Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones, Peace is flowing like a river, and Let There Be Peace on Earth.
Some of the other songs were better done by other artists. Like Shepherd Me is done better by the original Marty Haugen. This version is good, but not as good as Marty's. And I was not particularly fond of this version of Amazing Grace.
Overall I would recommend you buy a copy for your collection. The songs which are good, are very good.
Disappointing.......2004-04-01
This CD was not at all what I expected. It sounds just like you are in Church. Every song is accompanied by an organ and most of them sung in soprano. The tempo of all the songs is very slow too! I was looking for something I could sing along to, not put me to sleep! On the positive side, there are some beautiful songs, I just wish they were sung more "up beat".
Yes, these are great Catholic songs.......2004-02-07
I grew up with the music of the St. Louis Jesuits and this CD is a good representation of the BEST. In the spirit of Be Not Afraid, I am Near You, on Eagles Wings are all songs I loved in high school, college, and adult life. We sing most of these songs regularly at Mass. These are pleasant renditions of inspirational songs that uplift - in my opinion they are far better than much of the dirge music pre-vatican II.

Vibist Gary Burton has been collaborating with pianist Chick Corea and guitarist Pat Metheny since the mid-'70s, and it shows. The three have a strong intuitive sense of each other's lines and sound and can enhance the music in myriad, subtle ways. Having a great rhythm section doesn't hurt either, and bassist Dave Holland and drummer Roy Haynes are two of the very best. On Like Minds they have created an excellent CD: a no-frills, straight-ahead jazz album, crisply recorded, full of energy and imagination. With the exception of the George Gershwin piece, "Soon," the disc features all original compositions, with considerable thought given to distinguishing each soloist despite the surface similarity of their nimble, bouncy styles. Like minds, perhaps, but each possesses a singular voice and the ability to merge it creatively with others. --Wally Shoup
Customer Reviews:
Great Jazz.......2007-05-23
This is a great collection of really excellent Jazz. Gary Burton is on his game.
Excellent collaboration.......2006-10-30
What a lineup of musicians. This album grabs you solo after solo and doesn't let up till the end. Reccomended to fans of fun, improv-friendly jazz.
Sheer Beauty.......2006-06-10
This is definitely a worthy CD to purchase. Granted, this is not really a 'working' band, but rather 5 of the greatest living players on their respective instruments coming together to play. Therefore, I can understand some of the reviewers saying this is a jam session. It is. But Holy Cow can these guys play! Unlike most all-star line-ups that happen in the jazz industry, where the listener can tell that there is no rapport, this session sounds so fresh to my ears, and the general vibe is that all of the players are having FUN and really enjoying each other. It's like every player is having a field day with each solo, and everyone is totally grooving on each other.
I can't think of too many other recent CD's that have given me that feeling.
This one is really special.
Like Minds, Great Talent !!!!.......2006-03-22
There is a lot of talent on this CD and while it's not cutting edge, it is very enjoyable.
Classic of the Titans.......2006-01-27
Wow! What superlatives can you muster to adequately describe a collaboration of these five jazz giants? I'll spare you the hyperbole and just say that this is a mandatory acquisition for any semi-serious modern jazz fan. No if's, and's or but's. Burton, Metheny, and Corea all contribute new compositions as well as some of their own standards. The inclusion of Metheny's Question and Answer is reason enough buy this CD on the spot.
Although my rating says 5 stars, it is actually 4 3/4 stars because of a couple niggles I do feel like mentioning. Over the years I have not developed as much of an affinity for Corea's music as I have Burton's or Metheny's because he seems to treat the piano as a percussive instrument as much as he does a tonal instrument - which is not necessarily a good thing as far as my listening pleasure is concerned. His style is fraught with rapid fire, staccato arpeggiation and chromatic phrasing that often requires more effort to assimilate than I'd like to exert. And this album is no exception.
This issue is then exacerbated by the fact that the guy who was responsible for the mixing, James Farber, managed to produce the worst piano sound I have ever heard on a recording. Chick's sound is so compressed, flat, and lifeless here that it seems like Farber was intentionally trying to fabricate what a piano would sound like under water. It's mind boggling. Again, maybe this was intentional for some artistic reason that is way over my head but it is totally lost on my meager musical sensibilities.
Even with this notable flaw, though, the rest of the body of work here is so overwhelming that it gets swept away into the greatness of what is sure to become a modern day classic by these five jazz "titans". For those reviewers who don't care for the "jam session format" on display here, welcome to jazz. Buy it right now.

One of my first CD's.......2004-10-08
This is one of the first cd's I ever gotten... I still have it to this day... scratched to def! But my favorite songs were Curiousity, Problems, and Gin and Juice.... I loved that Gin and Juice song!
Amazing.......2004-08-20
Even though this music is dated, it is still extremely good. The powerful song lyrics shows what life is like for depressed inner city areas and how it expresses the artist's true inner feelings. I will always listen to this CD from a wonderful movie.
Anyone saying these are "unknown artists" ...........2004-01-28
loses all credibility. The artists from this disc are all very well known - Coolio, Aaron Hall, Rappin' 4 Tay, Dalvin (of Jodeci), Immature, Sista (Missy Elliot's group), DeVante Swing (the best producer of the '90s) .... how anybody could say these are "unknown artists" is beyond me, unless they just don't listen to urban music?????
Ya'll know Gangsta's Paradise. Even though I'm not a Coolio fan in the least, that song was bangin.
Curiousity, written by Missy Elliot and Dalvin, performed by Aaron Hall is a good midtempo R&B joint. Classic Dalvin.
Havin' Thangs - err, ok song. Nothing great at all.
Problems - A great conscience song by Rappin 4 Tay. He's good at what he does.
True OG - Mr. Dalvin and Static (of Playa) Great song. Dalvin and Static rap, although both are known for their R&B groups. PS - Static wrote Ginuwine's "Pony" ... if you don't know, do your homework.
Put Your Back Into It, Don't Go There -> neither song is worth anything
Feel The Funk - Possibly one of Immature's / IMX's best songs.
It's Alright - Missy Elliot's group Sista, a very underrated group and Craig Mack show why Missy blew up years following.
A Message for Your Mind - Rappin' 4 Tay - same west coast, conscience-heavy style he is known for.
Gin & Juice - DeVante Swing ft Static - BEST SONG ON THE ALBUM. DeVante's production is nuts on this, great party song. DeVante sings (which is rare) and he STARTED R Kelly's sing/rap/talk style before Kelly popularized it. Honestly, this has been my favorite song for 8 years now.
This is the Life - Wendy and Lisa, of Prince's camp. i'm not a fan, but hey, they're talented girls.
Very first CD I owned!.......2002-09-16
Actually I originally owned this on cassette, then my mom's friend ruined it and I had to get the CD, but I loved listening to this tape. It had that warped sound that tapes normally get after about 15-20 listens. I loved it so much. Then it got ruined then I was Dangerous Minds soundtrack-less. But God love my mom, she bought it for me on CD. That disc has been played out alot too! It has scratches due to how I USED TO treat my CDs, now I treat them with ultimate care. But check this album out and buy the DVD with it too. Awesome movie, awesome soundtrack!
OK compilation.......2001-07-01
This CD is pretty mediocre, and there isn't anything really distinguishable from the many rap/hip-hop movie soundtracks out there right now. There is nothing groundbreaking here, and no surprises from newcomers. The overplayed hit Gangsta's Paradise by Coolio kicks off the CD. It's followed by a lot of songs from unknown artists (Most of which should have stayed unknown) that sound like every other track on this CD. The two standouts are the Rappin' 4 Tay tracks A Message For Your Mind and Problems. Both of these songs are really good. As for the rest ... they are easily skipable. Don't waste your money on this CD.
