Sorrows for a Man Against Time.......2003-10-01
There is tearing in this longing. Mishima and Genet haunt this LP with their lusts and decay. Of all DI6's albums, this one confounds me most. The soundscapes are evocative, threatening and brutal. Sometimes all three at once. "Burn Again" makes me think of immolation, martyrdom, and tortured christs dangling from meathooks. Blood saturates this LP and so does ruin. "Blood Victory" is what, exactly? An Aryan call to arms? An archaic ritual that only Douglas P is aware of? I think of many heresies whilst listening to this. Many delicate torments. I find it soothes the beast after a long days feeding...
All that is great..........2000-11-01
Death in June is probably one of the best bands ever. "Cathedral of Tears" is pretty much just another masterpiece among many. Every Death in June album is plenty more than worth picking up, and thankfully for this site & several others, it's not as difficult as it could be.

Fantastic!.......1999-07-13
This CD is fantastic! The choir is one of England's best mixed (male/female) chapel choirs, here performing works by two of this century's greatest composers for the English church. Highlights are the two Evening Services: the lesser-known but stunningly beautiful and exotic(not to mention demanding) Chichester Service by Howells and Leighton's 2nd Service, with its amazing (and, here, wonderfully done) final Gloria Patri. Lovers of English church music--or of choral music in general--shouldn't miss this one.

Customer Reviews:
Sadly, A Little Background Music.......2005-09-03
Julia Thornton is a fine harpist and it is refreshing to have a recording of works for that ancient instrument of solace. There are enough works for solo harp and harp and orchestra in the repertoire that it seems a shame the producers of this recording opted for transcriptions for Thornton's debut album. But given these limitations, this is a recording that offers some of the most beautiful background music you will find: there are those times when during dining or solitary thinking that music of his nature is not a putdown.
The offerings are varied, from the expected Pachelbel 'Canon', to transcriptions from piano works (Bach's 'Goldberg Variations', Debussy's 'The Sunken Cathedral'), from lute songs (Dowland's 'Flow my Tears', Vivaldi's Largo from the Lute Concerto in D,) and some orchestral or concerti like the 'Adagio' from Beethoven's Emperor Concerto, etc. Thornton is 'assisted' by vocalists and National Radio Orchestra of the Netherlands, at times appropriately and other times a bit too much for 'atmosphere'.
In all, the album is a pleasant experience and never less than well played. But what could have been a significant addition to the recorded repertoire opted for just a bit of lovely background music. Maybe her next album... Grady Harp, September 05
A Little Too Light, A Bit Too Much Glamor.......2004-04-21
For whatever reason, I've had a rash of musical CD's in which a competent performer has fallen into a pattern of over-hype, including excessive production values, extensive professional websites, promises to keep and an output that is miniscule in comparison. Often the performer is worth notice, but the hype tends to promise more than can be delivered, and the musician suffers in the comparison.
This is the case with Julia Thornton, whose sole recording is this disk of music, of which only a few were originally for the harp. Many are quite pleasant, and a few are a bit eye-opening, but for some reason her producer, Craig Leon, has decided to mix in angelic choirs and other gimmicks that make the music hackneyed and a bit too 'new age.' On such case of this is 'Gassenhawer,' and another is Couperin's 'Les Baricades Misterieuses' which is overdone enough to be upsetting.
On other cases - the Vivaldi 'Largo' and the Handel Sarabande Julia is reduced to simple striking of the notes, nothing that shows of either the harp or her capabilities. On the other hand, the Bach Goldberg Variation and the Pescetti Andantino are a bit idiosyncratic, but very musical and interesting. Obviously there is more to Thornton than the album offers, but the album often suppresses these qualities in order to appeal to the popular audience.
The Adagio from Beethoven's Concerto No. 5 is problematic. Your ears will say 'interesting' but your mind will find it a far cry from Beethoven's original intentions. She comes so close to the percussive sound of the piano that it catches you up when she stops disguising her instrument. She does an excellent performance of the Tchaikovsky Lullaby, as well as Debussy's 'The Sunken Cathedral.'
The only piece that was originally written for harp is 'Chanson Dans La Nuit (Carlos Salzedo), which is something of a signature piece for Thornton. I can't say I found the various rattling and thumping which accompany the play very compelling, but they are Aledo's idea, not Thornton's. Chanson is a technical show off sort of thing and a bit to dry compared to the rest of the album (other than the Satie).
In sum, Thornton is an interesting harpist, but hardly the brilliant and inventive advocate of the instrument that the liner notes and website make her out to be. She is not the equal of players like Marisa Robles or Yolanda Kondonassis, and one shouldn't listen to her music expecting that kind of performance. On the other hand, as light listening the album is quite good and hopefully signals more to come.

....a suggestion that you correct the misspellings in the titles for tracks 5 and 20!
Worth a look as 2000 approaches.......1999-11-28
What a fine CD this is! As well as offering a generous and well-thought-out cross section of music written for Westminster Abbey Choir over the past thousand years, this also presents a neat view of the various facets of worship there- the choral Eucharist and Evensong settings, psalms, plainchant, hymns, and full anthems, as well as the coronation anthems unique to the Abbey. Of course, with each successive track the style advances, allowing us to see how choral music has developed across the ages. Of course, composers who directed at the Abbey are prominently featured (including Purcell and Gibbons, each represented with two works), and for the closing tracks we get an insight into the commissioning of new work (very common with Cathedral choirs at the moment). All of it is rendered with vigour, splendour and sensitivity (although sometimes the choir's intonation seems a little flat). I particularly like Martin Neary's chosen tempi for Handel's "Zadok the Priest"- in which the English Chamber Orchestra make a welcome appearance. It is somewhat inappropriate of me to single out any particular track as better than the others, given the unbiased and eclectic nature of the programme, but I would say that the Howells Westminster Service as presented here is one of the most powerful and stunning sounds I have ever heard- given a mighty and noble rendition by a very capable choir. This is another brilliant addition to Sony's "Arc of Light" recordings from Westminster Abbey. If you have any interest in the Abbey or are simply seeking a general overview of Cathedral music spanning the centuries, it is a disc you simply must consider. Highly recommended!
