5 out of 5 stars Superb.......2006-12-02

just an excellent album. It does have some songs driven by the acoustic guitar but that's a good thing in this case because it works so well with the songs. It also has the best marillion song as far as I'm concerned,"this strange engine", an epic 10+ minute track that has every element that makes marillion music so special. Pick this one up, you won't regret it.

3 out of 5 stars different and mellow.......2006-10-23

This album is a little more mellow than other marillion albums, and the acoustic guitar is more abundment. The songs Man Of a Thousand Faces, Eighty Days, Estonia, Memories of water, definitely have acoustic guitars as a main instrument of choice here. The song One Fne Day is a bluesy song and An Accidental Man is the sole rocker onthe album. The album moves nicely. Good songs throughout but if you are going to buy your first Marillion album, get Marbles or Afraid of Sunlight.

4 out of 5 stars One of the very good album with Steve Hoggart on vocals.......2007-05-06

I like this cd a lot, it is a very good one and it for sure in the top five done with Steve Hoggart on vocals. The music is intense and the voice is very emotionnal. A good addition to my cd collection.
My top five of Marillion with Steve H. on vocal would be "Brave", "Seansons End", "Holidays in Eden", "Afraid of Sunlight" and "This Strange Engine".

4 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars for album....5 stars for Estonia.......2006-07-15

While recently reading the reviews for this album, I noticed only a handful of the reviewers give mention to the song "Estonia". This is one of the most beautiful songs these guys have produced...just a wonderful verse and chorus structure to the song. As for the rest of the CD...its definitely a "mix-match" of material. Tracks such as "Man of a Thousand Faces" and the very worthy Title track are numbers that this band has become indentifiable with. "Hope for the Future" seems to take the most 'Flak' from reviewers, but I actually think its a fine track...with the 'World music' sounds and all. "One Fine Day" and "80 Days" are both very listenable songs, though they are not the tracks I return to on this album. To this point, I still haven't come to a conclusion on "An Accidental Man" or "Memory of Water"...I kind of like them, but can certainly live without them. The bottom line on TSE....its not their weakest album with Hogarth, but its far from their best with him(besides, you have to take into account this was the "painful" follow-up to the spectacular Greatness of "Afraid of Sunlight"). If your new to the band this is probably NOT the one to get going with. I would steer you towards "Afraid of Sunlight", "Seasons End" or "Marbles". If you find that you like those, I would also recommend "Brave", "Anoraknophobia" and "Holidays in Eden". As for releases from the Fish years, you can't go wrong with any of them (though I can't comment on "Fugazi", as I haven't heard it). Conclusion....decent album with a couple of Great tracks from a Great Band!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2005-11-03

This Strange Engine is quite simply one of the most beautiful albums I've ever heard. I understand that Marillion is one of the most highly regarded bands in the progressive/art rock genre, and that their back catalogue contains some truly exceptional albums, but This Strange Engine is in a class all its own and remains my favorite Marillion album.

This is an album that may not fall into the traditional progressive mold, in that aside from the title track there is not much in the way of showy instrumental passages or lengthy epics. Instead the band opts for a sound that appeals more to emotion and a sense of beauty. Much of this appeal comes from the performance of vocalist Steve Hogarth.

When original vocalist Fish left the band, it marked a turning point for Marillion's sound. Fish's fey, almost otherworldly delivery was replaced by Steve Hogarth's more earnest and (to my ears) emotional style. I know that many purists greatly prefer the Fish era albums, and that is quite understandable, as they are truly works of art, but I tend to enjoy the Hogarth albums more. They just seem to resonate more and connect with me on a more emotional level.

This Strange Engine is, so far, the best of those albums. All of the songs are excellent, but Man of a Thousand Faces, Estonia, and An Accidental Man are truly exceptional. This album is emotional, powerful, and beautiful, and I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect.......2004-04-22

The album is really great! But "Hope for the Future" is the WORST Marillion song ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars SOME MARILLION UNIQUE MOMENTS.......2003-06-07

Released in 1997, this album is not at the top of my Marillion preferences. Being them my favorite band since 1987, I consider "Season's End" (1989, 1st without Fish) or "Afraid Of Sunlight" (1995, the previous to this one) more homogenous (regarding only the band's discography with Steve Hogarth as lead singer).

But 6 years have passed since I bought it, and I keep on listening to it pretty often. So where's the explanation? Well, especially in 2 great tracks: Estonia (lovely lyrics) and This Strange Engine (a pure Marillion song). These 2 songs would be reason enough for me to rate this album 4 stars instead of 3. Man Of A Thousand Faces (played on the 2001 live tour) or An Accidental Man are also good quality songs. The rest of the album is well listened but I don't find any other track at the same level as those.

An amazing album, Hogarth et.al created a masterpiece, with the epic title song completing the album. If you like TSE, try other Marillion favorites like Misplaced Childhood, Clutching at Sraws, and Brave. Also try IQ "subtreanea" and Spock's Bread "The Light"
