Product Description
Maven is the long awaited post-industrial band from Nitzer Ebb founder Bon Harris. Catchy hooks and powerful choruses dominate this self-titled debut. The album features songs such as the Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds cover "Hard On For Love" featuring Marilyn Manson on vocals, and "Silverbirds," a melodic, political journey into the subconscious 21st Century mind. With Bon Harris on vocals, Biff Sanders on drums, and Andy Troy on guitar Maven is a sonic symphony designated to spark both your aural and visual senses. Maven is a force that will pave the way for upcoming artists and music lovers while penetrating and cracking the post-industrial movement.

Product Description
The songs of Washington, D.C.-based singer-guitarist Alice Despard are like New York City rock 'n' roll played on an old Harmony acoustic guitar -- like Patti Smith interpreting the work of Neil Young. Despard fuses her intuitive, poetic observations with a warm mysticism, producing sparse, intellectually muscular songs that resemble nothing so much as four-minute pop hymns. Blending the stark realism of the Velvet Underground with the oblique optimism of early R.E.M., they play as fresh and original while touching some of the most significant bases in modern rock. Add to this mix the influences of Van Morrison, the Beatles, Mission of Burma, East River Pipe, Vic Chesnutt, and the Sea and Cake, and you find you're listening to a songwriter as distinctive as any in alternative pop. Despard's new 'Vessel,' released by U.S. indie label Wampus Multimedia, brings her expressive voice to the fore. Comprised of original material both old and new, it reinvents her traditional indie aesthetic as a sort of unamplified melodicism, the abrupt beauty of a singer left standing after all the Marshall stacks have blown. While Despard's recent solo efforts, 'Push Me Pull You' (1999), 'Alice Despard Group' (2000), and 'Thinning of the Veil' (2003), were rooted firmly in the whir-'n'-blur of indie pop, 'Vessel' relies on the arresting candor of her unadorned voice. While Despard makes what The Washington Post called "lush, ethereal country rock," the music's heady spiritualism is difficult to classify. Whether accompanied solely by her acoustic guitar, or by inventive collaborators Evan Pollack (drums), Philip D'Ambrosio (bass), and Bobby Birdsong (lap steel), Despard leaves sonic fingerprints not found in the recordings of other artists. From the Velvet-esque "The Well" to the soulfully plaintive "By the Way" to the sweetly sparkling "Hold You Up," 'Vessel' speaks to a rich inner life. Produced by Mark Doyon at Wampus Sound Studio, 'Vessel' is part of the Wampus Multimedia Sessions series, featuring literate singer-songwriters captured in the studio over the course of a single day. The focus falls on the intimacy of performance, evoking the mood of a live show in the context of the studio.

Customer Reviews:
Great album and a great performer.......2004-07-03
I saw Robynn perform at the Fleetwood Mac show in Hartford, CT in June, 2004, just her and her guitar and she was fabulous. In fact, I wish more of the tracks on MAFG were acoustic so that you could better appreciate the skill of her playing and the beauty of her voice. I bought MAFG from her that day, and I'm glad I got it signed because she's going places. I wait anxiously for when I'll be able to hear her play live again.
Distinct, smart songwriting.......2003-01-28
"Modern American Female Gut" is an apt title for this album. Her songs, and delivery, are straight from the gut, and she pulls no punches in her offerings. When I first listened to the album, I was reminded of Alanis Morissette's work on "Jagged Little Pill." I was immediately impressed by the harmony of lyrics and music. While the lyrics are catchy and pull you in immediately, they're yet well thought out, and emotionally provocative, giving this album teeth on many levels.
To me, this album is what the female singer/songwriter experience is about. It transcends musical genres. For the few songs on this album that miss, there are others that bring me close to tears in their poignancy. The album is in my regular CD rotation, and I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a fresh glance at sincere songwriting, which seems to be becoming a lost art, or at least one pushed out of the mainstream.
I love her music.......2001-08-03
Robynn Ragland writes her own music and she is diverse in her abilities. She seems like the type of musician that could have done anything and been good at it. I love the song, "people you know". I couldn't stop humming the tune. I just hope she gets some play on the radio. She's so much better that Cheryl Crow or Mariah Carey that tend to sound the same on album after album. I would love to see her in concert. I imagine she is a wonderful performer with a great voice that doesn't need a recording studio to make her sound good.
A Great cd from start to finish.......2000-06-30
What an amazing album. Robynn Ragland is an unbeleivable songwriter with a very distinct sound.
Robynn is truly a rising star!.......2000-05-02
Many of us who have been anxiously awaiting the release of this first album were certainly not disappointed. It is a phenomenal first album. I am anxiously awaiting all of her future releases!

Guitar Hero.......2001-06-28
Wow! The guitar playing on this record is explosive. Can't Stop Movin'? I can't stop listening.
you done did it by michael locke and the repeat offenders.......2001-06-27
Thank you Michael Locke and the Repeat Offenders (wherever you are) for providing me with countless hours of listening pleasure. I practically wore this CD out. Michael's guitar playing simply grabs you and communicates with your soul. His passion comes through with every chord and every note played. This CD is also humorous and fun. It's cool to encounter a gifted and talented musician who manages to remain grounded and not take himself too seriously. I love every track on this CD but my two favorites are "Austin Backwash" and "Time will Tell". The funky grooves makes me want to get up and dance (Car dance if I'm in my car). I also really like "Yea" because it's cool and it cracks me up and their version of "Hideaway" is Freddie King with added hot spice named Michael Locke. If you're a blues enthusiast like me, you'll LOVE this CD. I hope there are many more to follow because I can't get enough of these guys.
HOT AND COOL!!.......2001-05-17
WHAT A WONDERFUL LISTENING EXPERIENCE! FROM HAPPY AND FEEL GOOD (CUTS 1,4,5,8 & 12) TO LOW DOWN AND DIRTY (CUTS 2,5,7,10&11) TO HOT AND ... (3&9 AND OH, HELL, ALL OF 'EM ACTUALLY!), WITH A LITTLE JAZZ THROWN IN (6) THIS ALBUM ROCKS, ROLLS AND KEEPS YOU MOVIN' FROM BEGINING TO END. I'VE PLAYED IT IN MY HOME FOR LOTS OF DIFFERENT OCCASSIONS AND IT NEVER MISSES - IS ALWAYS A HIT. EVERYBODY WANTS TO KNOW WHO THIS GREAT GUITARIST IS. MICHAEL LOCKE IS AN AMAZING TALENT - BUT THE MOST AMAZING THING IS THAT HE'S EVEN BETTER LIVE! WHEN WILL WE SEE/HEAR HIM ON TV? THE WORLD IS MISSING OUT ON A TRULY GREAT EXPERIENCE. WHEN'S THE NEXT CD ??!!
Locke Rocks and more.......2001-03-18
This is powerful stuff, real deal blues... hard core Michael Locke plays both a handful of covers (note especially the Otis Rush classic "All Your Love" and Freddie King's "Hideaway") and no fewer than eight originals with authority and dexterity, not to mention genuine six-string style. His electric guitar is ripping yet plaintive, Locke can both rock and rile you and soothe. His lyrics are often hilarious, and this album gets an even bigger boost lyric-wise with producer Johnny Nitro writing one and co-writing a pair of songs. The acoustic "Six Feet" is a nice surprise after the rocking electric songs that precede it. Then again, Michael goes pretty guitar savage on that one too, even unplugged. This is a great blues CD. Amazing that this guy is not yet on a real label.

As former Big Spoon fan club president, I was fortunate to find this band early on, when all they had was a four-track and a dream. Nice job, Will!
A fabulous disc. Don't leave this page without buying it!.......1999-10-22
These guys have talent, these guys have style. They've definitely found a sound that skillfully merges some great musical genres. Dang, I wish we had bands like this in New York.
One of those albums you leave in your CD player permanently.......1999-08-26
A fantastic album--beautiful harmonies coupled with down-home melodies. An album for rainy weekends and even, curiously, late night parties. (I played the album a few times at soirees I hosted and got several thumbs up.) Check it out.
