Judging by the themes of anger and betrayal that dominate Kelly Clarkson's third disc, My December, perhaps 'Jagged Little Idol' would have been a more telling title. According to interviews, the massively successful artist wanted more creative control with her music going forward; as a result, unlike her previous CDs, Clarkson contributes as a songwriter on every track. The final product is not nearly as catchy as Breakaway, but is far more introspective and honest. My December's overall sound brings a harder musical style than fans might expect, with acerbic lyrics to match; the disc's first single "Never Again"--a dark rock song slamming her ex-boyfriend--is certainly a tip-off. The compelling chorus of "Hole" finds Clarkson singing "There's a hole/inside of me/it's so damn cold/slowly killing me" over a melody that is far more Tool than top-40. "Haunted" and "Judas" are wrought-over tracks that veer into Evanescence territory, while the wonderfully sparse "Maybe" is a highlight within which Clarkson's pleading voice is perfectly showcased. My December's final listed track, "Irvine" (prior to the hidden bluesy acoustic ballad "Chivas") sounds far more Cat Power-meets-Corinne Bailey Rae than Clarkson, but it is certainly one of the most captivating songs on the disc, and serves as yet another reminder of just how versatile her voice is. Fans of her previous radio-friendly releases may well be divided on her new direction, but it appears to be the path Clarkson is likely to continue to travel. --Denise Sheppard

5 out of 5 stars Best Album in Years.......2007-07-12

Kelly's songwriting is amazing. Very catchy and meaningful songs on here. A MUST buy !!

5 out of 5 stars Give it a chance!.......2007-07-11

I didn't know what to expect from this album due to all the bad press surrounding the release, but I was very pleased when I listened to it. It probably won't appeal to the younger fans of Idol and the 'Breakaway' album because the lyrics are definately more mature, but don't write it off until you listen to it.

Kelly's voice shines on this album as well; there's a lot of emotion coming through her voice, which I assume is because she actually wrote these songs.

Some of the best tracks on the album are How I Feel, Chivas, Can I Have a Kiss, Be Still and Sober.

1 out of 5 stars disappointed.......2007-07-11

I bought Kelly Clarkson cd My December thinking it would be a good cd.
I was so disappointed in this one. I bought the cd Breakaway before
I thought that was good. My December did not rank up there with Breakaway.
I would not recommend this one to buy it would be a waste of money.

5 out of 5 stars I don't see all the `naysayers' point..........2007-07-11

I love this CD. I think too much has been made about the record label and Kelly not seeing eye to eye. It likely happens with every artist (as well as with any adult that has every held a REAL job or a family) just depends on how the media spins, they decided to make Kelly the enemy. She is a successful artist, vocalist, who chooses to share her anger and bitterness with the world. Her songs are well written and adequately illustrate her aforementioned anger and hostility. We've all been there, significant other, who you trusted, fails and/or leaves you, your job sucks, and everyone has a comment about you and your life. You are left justifiably irate, disturbed, jaded and cynical. This is a great CD for those moments. Plus, Kelly has an incredible voice. My favorites, in order, are 'Haunted', 'Sober', 'Never Again', 'Maybe', and 'Hole'.

5 out of 5 stars Very good album.......2007-07-11

Very good album, but not as good as last album. This album impressed me. At first listen the songs were enjoyable. The last album is undeniably better but who cares? She has a great voice and the songs are good at first listen.

When he laid down 1994's The Impossible Bird--the ninth solo album in a career that already, via Rockpile, Brinsley Schwarz, Kippington Lodge, and production work for Elvis Costello, the Damned, and the Pretenders, stretched back over 25 years--Nick Lowe probably wasn't setting out to create a four-part trilogy à la Douglas Adams. But with At My Age (which is 58, incidentally, as of the album's June 2007 release), Lowe has created a fine companion to Bird, 1998's Dig My Mood, and 2001's The Convincer. Six years was a bit too long of a wait, 2004's live Untouched Takeaway notwithstanding. And given all that time, Lowe breaks no new ground: At My Age is essentially more of the same combination of blue-eyed soul and pre-Sweetheart country-rock that characterized those previous releases. But when the results are so deliciously horn-drenched and include songs like "Long Limbed Girl," "People Change," "The Club," "Not Too Long Ago," and the delightfully malicious "I Trained Her to Love Me" ("If you think that it's depraved and I should be ashamed, so what? / I'm only paying back womankind for all the grief I got"), who's complaining? Good things have indeed come to those who waited. --Benjamin Lukoff

Album Description

Blue-eyed soul? You don't even know the definition until you've heard the sweet smoke of Nick Lowe's trademark croon. Now, later in life, Lowe's rootsy, grown-up soul has risen to the surface of what was a cracked and stripped-down artistic aesthetic in the late '70s, when he produced records for Elvis Costello, the Pretenders, and influential British proto-punkers the Damned. During his years as house producer for Stiff Records Lowe's oft-copied rough-hewn production style set the stage for the DIY philosophy of the punk revolution.

Sublimely aged in a solid oak barrel, At My Age showcases Lowe's perfection of his own unique brand of soul-soaked country-pop, resulting in an album as refined and perfectly distilled as he is. Lowe's convention-breaking phrasing shines backed by gorgeous '60s Memphis-style horns and tastefully subdued guitar hooks. At My Age displays, with Nick's signature polish, the sublime, linear connection between country, rhythm and blues, and rock 'n' roll. So, grab a drink, a smoke, and hear Americana done right...by a Brit.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Nick The Nife is Back.......2007-07-12

Of the last four Lowe CDs, all of which stray from country to lounge to classic pop, this one is the 2nd best, trailing only the magnificent "The Impossible Bird," but much better than the uneven Dig My Mood and the hit-and-miss The Convincer. It's still a grand cry from the glory days of the late 70s--the clever phrases are still here but much of Nick's "new" music lacks melody or a musical hook that marked his rock stuff. But the the bottom line is, Nick Lowe is a true original and always has been, and if you like his style, you'll like this CD.

4 out of 5 stars A mature work as title implies.........2007-07-05

I suppose that, being the major fan I am and having so many "already favorites," it's pretty hard to just sally forth with another 5 stars. I prefer it when Nick leans toward the up-tempo and, as the title implies, he's doing more crooning these days than rocking. And, as happened to me when I listened to John Prine's recent release with Mac Wiseman, I heard something different in the voice nowadays. Nick sounds "husk-ier" these days (not "husky" as in being a large man, but "husky" in that there is a little crackle there now). Oh, to be sure, this is well deserving of at least 4 stars, big fan or no. Nice full accompaniment with horns and backup vocals, a little more "fleshed out" soundwise than some earlier things. And there are indeed some nice up-tempo tracks like his remake of the Unique's "not Too Long Ago." Most people know that band for the tender ballad "All These Things" but I appreciate Nick covering the lesser known and, to me, better song.
A word about the 3 free downloadable songs available with the CD: while the songs themselves aren't new songs, we get a nice acoustic version of "What's So Funny About Peace Love and Understanding" and a nice live version of "12 Step Program." And also 9 other downloadable songs from the YepRoc catalog. At least at this writing.

4 out of 5 stars Not long enough.......2007-07-05

As brilliant as The Convincer, but, at 33 minutes, there isn't enough of it. This album is so well produced, I, for one, would appreciate some longer pieces with more instrumental breaks. I''m grateful for the new release and am enjoying it, all the same.

5 out of 5 stars Still the Jesus of Cool.......2007-07-05

The monicker that Nick Lowe earned almost three decades ago seems even more apt with each new release. His "The Convincer" was one of three CD's that helped me through a rough patch five years ago (the others were Graham Parker's "Deepcut to Nowhere" and John Hiatt's "The Tiki Bar is Open"). And "At My Age" is equally as good; slightly more upbeat, in a downbeat way. Every song's a gem.

5 out of 5 stars Current vintage Nick aged and uncorked perfectly.......2007-07-03

As soon as I saw the previewed cover art and title I knew this was going to be another wonderful and all-too-infrequently serving of the Nick Lowe continuum of shaggy dog molasses charm and ease-y verbal adroitness masking the journey through middle age. It's all right there from the bounce and vigor to the mildly self-effacing but still cats got the cream personality. Nice hair too. Viva Nick forever. All of the tracks are dandy, but I seem to keep replaying Hope For Us All.

Thanks to a fortuitous intersection of talent and fate, 22-year-old Josh Groban hasn't finished his senior year in performing arts school but has already released his sophomore effort on a major major label. Fans of the young vocal phenom's debut will find much to enthrall them here, even if it nudges the singer closer to the center of producer/mentor David Foster's MOR pop sensibilities. Eschewing much of its predecessor's more overt classic-lite pretensions and pop-rock covers for a slate of dramatic, Eurocentric ballads that serve as a showcase for the singer's inviting baritone, Groban shrewdly positions himself as the American alternative to the Bocelli-Watson crossover axis. "Caruso" may find the singer falling short of its operatic inspiration, but "Oceano" and "My Confession" quickly showcase his true dramatic range (which seems to all but yearn for a bona fide Broadway musical challenge), while a vocal take of Bacalov's graceful "Il Postino" theme uses classical virtuoso Joshua Bell's violin flourishes to good effect. To his credit, Groban displays some promising efforts at songwriting collaboration on the bittersweet "Per Te" and "Remember When It Rains," while the ambient/ethnic soundscape of Deep Forest's "Never Let Go" offers a teasing alternative to the record's otherwise melodramatic production formula. Groban has found commercial triumph via Foster's mentoring, but there remains a nagging sense here that he hasn't truly pushed himself as an artist--yet. --Jerry McCulley

This was the first Josh Groban album that I bought. I heard his Live at the Greek album in a friend's vehicle and decided I needed some of his work. I have since bought all of his available albums. This is still probably my favorite. It is an excellent example of his talent and the music is beautiful! I definitely recommend it to any music fan.

This fourth effort from the soft-rock-masquerading-as-country band Rascal Flatts moved more than 721,000 copies its first week out, which let the female-friendly trio rub elbows with some mighty heady company. Only four other country artists (Garth Brooks, Shania Twain, the Dixie Chicks, and Tim McGraw) have rolled out numbers like that, and only 24 other acts total (including Eminem, 50 Cent, U2, and Coldplay). So what's the hook, besides Gary LeVox's wounded tenor and Joe Don Rooney's boy-band face? Clearly, it's the songs. Or it usually is. On Me and My Gang, "What Hurts the Most" is the one that'll end up on a tape loop in your head, though "Yes, I Do" memorably frames romantic yearning and regret with ersatz reggae rhythms, and the sexy "Cool Thing" does a slow burn. The problem? New producer Dann ("King of Excess") Huff bloats too many tunes with screaming, by-the-book guitars and general bombast. And despite his über success with Faith Hill and Keith Urban, Huff has never really understood what makes country, well... country. Instead, he insultingly works in a snippet of steel guitar and a couple of family lyrics--e.g., the melodramatic "Ellsworth" is meant to pull the heartstrings of anyone who's seen the cruelty of Alzheimer's--and thinks he's thrown Nashville a bone. Worse, "Backwards" boringly reworks that hoary ol' country joke "What do you get when you play a country song backwards?," the title song is a Big & Rich ripoff, and even God gets dragged in for a half-baked attempt at middle-America resonance ("He Ain't the Leavin' Kind"). C'mon now. Call these boys pop and be done with the pandering. Joe Don's famously photographed derrière got a fairer crack than this. --Alanna Nash

Thsi album is absolutely great, all of the songs are just so full of emotions and the voice of LeVox just makes it even better, all of the album is a masterpiece though the songs that outstand the most are "What Hurts the Most", "Pieces" (My personal favorite, I just love this song I think I've played it over 400 times in my itunes library already), "My Wish", "Ellsworth" (Nice story the song describes) and "Stand", if you like music with great tunes and lyrics and specially with MEANING, then this is the album for you, by the way this one contains "Life is A Highway" as a fourteenth track unlike the previous April 4rth release.

I must say I was impressed with the whole CD. Each song is wonderful. There are ballads, and up tempo tunes. My Wish, To Make Her Love Me, Yes I do and Pieces have turned out to be my favorites.

I recommend the entire CD!!!

My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way has alternately described his band's third album as "completely over the top" and "borderline psychotic." But even those words can't adequately prepare fans of the group's 2004 platinum major-label debut, Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge, for the onslaught of twisted song suites, glam-rock cannon fire and drama-club theatrics that make up The Black Parade. Tracks like "Mama" and "The End" make "Bohemian Rhapsody" sound like "Blitzkrieg Bop." It's no coincidence that the disc feels as dizzyingly monumental as Green Day's American Idiot--after all, the two albums share the same label, producer, studio, janitorial team, and sense of apocalyptic dread. Similarly, The Black Parade will cast its creators in a completely new light. Despite its overly histrionic tendencies and a totally oddball cameo from Liza Minelli, it offers a clear signal that My Chemical Romance is ready to be taken seriously. --Aidin Vaziri

4 out of 5 stars By all means, welcome to The Black Parade!!!!.......2007-07-09

When lead-singer Michael Way called the album "psychotic", he wasn't kidding. Upon my first go-round with The Black Parade, I didn't get it. I sat there for a moment thinking, "Wait, what?" However, having listened to "Three Cheers...." and "I Brought You...", I knew better than to go with first impressions, so I listened to it again....and again....and again...and I'm still listening to it almost a year after it's release.

What a superb Junior effort by this group of alt-rockers (if that's the genre you choose to place them in). This album has a little something for everyone. I enjoy this albgum so much, I would love to write a review for each song on the album. However, that would prolong you from doing what you should be doing, which is listening to the album. Stop reading and start listening.

One listen and you'll hear influences ranging from Green Day to Pink Floyd to Queen. All superbly brought together with the brilliant musicianship of My Chemical Romance. If you're even remotely interested in My Chemical Romance, buy this album. And, even if you're not interested, buy it anyway. WOW!!!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best albums that I've heard in a long, long time.......2007-07-06

I was driving home one night, and I heard this song playing on the radio. It was epic, big, and unlike anything that I had ever heard. My wife said that it was from someone called 'My Chemical Romance.'
I had heard of them, but I thought that they were some sort of punk rock band. I love alternative music, and hard rock. I grew up on it, however, I could never get into punk rock.
I mentioned the song to someone at work, and they said that they had the CD, and said that it was great, and that I should try it.
So I did.
I was totally blown away by this album! There's not a song on it that I would skip through. From the opening lines of 'The End.,' to the almost inspirational chorus of 'Famous Last Words,' My Chemical Romance brings an album with a wide range of styles that all seem to meld into on fantastic album. 'The Black Parade' is one of the all-time greats, and 'Disenchanted' near the very end of the album really stand out as songs that could stand the test of time.
This is an album that I could anticipate picking up ten years from now, and still like it as much then, as I do today. And THAT sort of album does not come along very often.
So I say, that if you like music, any kind of rock music, pick up this album.

4 out of 5 stars Better than I ever would have expected.......2007-06-14

Their first CD is raw. Their second CD is so emo even I get depressed from it. The Black Parade is as close to a masterpiece that any modern band has been able to achieve. Of course, this band borrowed quite a bit of the musical feel from the '70s. From infinite harmony parts to beautiful stadium-rock guitar solos (thank you, Ray!), this album just screams classic rock with a modern twist: Gerard's voice and a theme of death and agony. The comparisons with the Smashing Pumpkins that have been made are justified after this album: both bands disappoint their old fans in a wonderful, interesting way. With time, maybe those disappointed fans realize what a great new sound the band has created (or half-recreated, in MCR's case), but what is certain is that new fans will be brought along with the new sound. I'm one of those fans. I'm not a big lover of their earlier works--too sappy and boring and similar to other bands--but this album is really something. MCR are a rock band again, not emo, not soft punk, but rock.

4 out of 5 stars Good CD.......2007-05-31

Wayne truely is the best rapper alive he can take anyones beats and make them his own..... Like he once said "i can say don't rhyme and it rhyme" he's right..... this cd is dope and i would suggest it to anyone who likes Lil Wayne

5 out of 5 stars Very Impressive.......2007-05-24

Lil Wayne Is in my opinion, the king of mixtapes right now. He is avereging about 1 mixtape every three months. This Mixtape is Awesome. Alot of his other mixtapes have people from his record label, and you only get to hear Weezy on one of the verses. However, on this mixtape he does it mainly by himself. This is more like a full cd or two. Great punchlines, I had to rewind a couple of times because I was dumb founded. Definitely worth the buy. Cant wait for his next mixtape!

Though this release carries the deceptive subtitle Another Record by Ry Cooder, the virtuosic guitarist and ethnomusicological adventurer has never released another album quite like this. And neither has anyone else. After brilliant side trips into the music of pre-Castro Cuba and pre-baseball Chavez Ravine, Cooder returns to the Depression-era and Dust Bowl ballads that marked his earliest solo releases of the 1970s. Yet most of this material is original, offering a populist parable of three fellow travelers: Buddy Red Cat, Lefty Mouse, and the Reverend Tom Toad. The tradition of putting pointed social commentary in the mouths of animals extends from Animal Farm to Pogo, and Buddy seems like a feline cross between Woody Guthrie and Joe Hill--a troubadour of union solidarity, interspecies brotherhood, and radical populism. Though Cooder's cartoon vocals occasionally sound a little mannered, the music throughout ranks with his best, as he reunites with conjunto accordion master Flaco Jimenez and soul singers Terry Evans and Bobby King, enlists banjo brothers Pete and Mike Seeger, and receives inspired support from the Chieftains' Paddy Moloney, pianist Van Dyke Parks, and drummers Jim Keltner and (his son) Joachim Cooder. Whether he's channeling his inner Chet Baker on "Green Dog" or closing with the utopian vision of "There's a Bright Side Somewhere," Cooder shows more sides of his multifaceted music than he has on any previous release. --Don McLeese

Album Description

On My Name Is Buddy, Ry Cooder revisits, in a new set of original material, the sound and feeling of the "dust bowl songs" he first explored more than three decades ago on such groundbreaking albums as his self-titled 1970 debut and 1971's In The Purple Valley. In fact, he's joined by old friends like pianist Van Dyke Parks and drummer Jim Keltner who were with him at the start of his extraordinary, ultimately globe-spanning musical odyssey, which has yielded him six Grammy Awards to date, several more nominations, and perennial acclaim. My Name Is Buddy is also a journey, a phantasmagorical rendering in music, words and pictures of the travels of three unlikely cohorts - Buddy Red Cat, Lefty Mouse and Reverend Tom Toad - as they meander through the west "in the days of labor, big bosses, farm failures, strikes, company cops, sundown towns, hobos and trains...the America of yesteryear." For this allegorical tale, Cooder marshals all his remarkable skills as a producer, arranger, songwriter, soundtrack composer and musicologist. (The Christian Science Monitor recently dubbed him "a modern-day Alan Lomax.") My Name Is Buddy recalls Woody Guthrie's Bound for Glory - that is, if it had been enacted by the articulate animal characters of Walt Kelly's classic comic Pogo. Cooder conjures up the dark shadows of an earlier time to wryly comment on the political and social issues of the present. As back-story to his songs, Cooder has written short stories for each one and they're accompanied by evocative illustrations from noted San Antonio-based painter and muralist Vincent Valdez, all of which are included in a specially designed package.

3 out of 5 stars Good--but it doesn't hold together for me as well as the reviews described.......2007-07-12

I got the CD because I like Ry Cooder and like the concept of a story-CD. For me, "Chavez Ravine" felt like a more cohesive body of material, though.

I cannot fault the musicianship and the storyline is fascinating. Anyone who has a past anchored in the Dust Bowl area will identify with the stories---Cooder must have done his research from testimonials of folks who'd been there. If you are interested in this topic, the Oklahoma Historical Society has an extensive oral history collection, plus there were many interviews conducted by the WPA during the Depression. (The Indian Pioneer Histories)

One thing, I'm happy I got this CD used. I'd probably rate it less if I'd paid $16.99 for it and seen the 'eco packaging' already raveling at the edges. Yes, I'd like friendlier CD covers, but please can we at least get archival quality here? I do plan on keeping this CD.

5 out of 5 stars ...it wasn't that long ago...........2007-06-18

And maybe that is part of Ry's point.

Ry Cooder seems to be able to find the wonderful diversity of our world lurking under the notes. He plays and out comes ...the heat of the desert as desperation in Paris, Texas, ...the saucy spirit of persistence in Buena Vista Social Club, the fun "Oh I forgot how happy music makes me" in Chicken Skin Music. There are so many. And whats amazing is that there is hardly an album or soundtrack that you don't listen to - I mean really listen.

This is another amazing effort. Full of depression and unionizations references. There is Buddy (the buddy system), Lefty (left - get it), J. Edgar the pig (you can do this one yourself). Characters, good and bad, the truck drivers, the Klan (Republiklans), the poll police (the man) and the wonderful farmer's daughter.

I think the message could have been stronger. Pete Seeger is definitely part of the inspiration. He was master of the alagory - but he had to be. Those were the days when the man would pop out of nowhere and you would be gone (maybe lost to the coyotes). Seeger let his listener pull the power of the issue out of his prose. Ry Cooder could have been abit more "in our face" with these issues. 'Chavez Ravine' proves he has a punch.

But - fear not - this is too good to pull back a star. Listen to it and tell the younger folks that there were times when it was hard - really hard - to find the bright side.

3 out of 5 stars Sorry Ry..........2007-06-12

...but this album borders on the juvenile. And the songs are poorly phrased. This package is destined for the bargain bins.
Now, let's hear from more of those folks who couldn't write a negative review if their life depended on it....Those are the ones that always wind up at the top of Amazon's Customer reviews.

5 out of 5 stars ry cooder at his best.......2007-06-08

love the story line which gets across the message in such a subtle way- who would love a cat named buddy!!

5 out of 5 stars Ry's own voice.......................................2007-05-31

A bit of a "return to his own roots" effort in that Ry:

(a) sings in a style I remember him most for, that is, in a straightforward unstrained manner, as he did on his earlier albums that I admired so much, and
(b) brings back to the arena some political folk sentiments, so we have some Woody Guthrie/Pete Seeger sprinklings along the way.

And he also brings along something rather new for him, a concept album built along a developing lyrical theme. So we have a story line that runs the length of the album.

As always, excellent sidemen and women bring invaluable contributions. But my first thiought on hearing this was that Ry was letting his own voice take its rightful place in the mix again, not so much at the expense of spotlighting his string playing and the guests.

Put together by Abba's own Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! manages to cram over 20 of the Swedish supergroup's songs into a threadbare plot. It goes a little like this: Young Sophie is getting married and she's trying to identify which of three men is her father. That's about it. Wisely, the musical doesn't mess around with the songs, save for the insertion of some dialogue or for having some of them performed by a man (it works amazingly well). Abba fans will jump on this import of the London production, but traditional fans of musical theater should consider it as well. After all, Andersson and Ulvaeus's songs have always felt as if they were more than isolated pop gems and actually belonged to a longer narrative. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars Mamma Mia Musical CD.......2007-03-21

This is a grand list of songs from the original musical when it was first introduced in England. The songs from ABBA are very recognizable even if you haven't seen the show. But, making a trip to NY to see the Broadway production is a plus. ENJOY!

4 out of 5 stars JUST GREAT MUSIC.......2007-03-08

I RECENTLY SAW THE SHOW MAMMA MIA IN LAS VEGAS. ALWAYS LIKES THE MUSIC OF ABBA, AND THOUGH THE PLOT WAS THIN, THE MUSIC WAS WELL PERFORMED. IN THIS PARTICULAR ALBUM, THE ENGLISH ACCENTS WERE A BIT MUCH, BUT THE SONGS WERE GREAT. ALL I CAN SAY IS THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC, ABBA.

This is not what we wanted. The British accents throw it was off. We just saw it in NY and this is not what we were looking for.

Every track on this CD contains a beautiful melody, many of them easily recognizable, all of them exuding tranquility. "O mio babbino caro" from Puccini's Gianni Schicchi opens the disc, with Bell delicately accompanied by a harp and spinning the long melody with great sensitivity. Bellini's "Casta diva" from Norma lives up to its reputation as the epitome of bel canto in Bell's hands; his violin sings. The middle movement of Mozart's 21st Piano Concerto takes well to the violin, and Debussy's "The Girl with the Flaxen Hair" is played with great warmth and sensuality. It would be easy to turn a recital like this into treacle, but Bell is wise enough to realize that the music is already sweet enough and he plays with great reserve and a minimum of sentimental slides. The light accompaniments always support, with woodwinds prominent but used with grace. This CD, in short, is a beauty: a fine gift, a lovely mood setter. --Robert Levine

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars End of the Day.......2007-06-08

I am a Joshua Bell fan, and this album is the one that I enjoy with my dessert, it calms me at the end of the day, and makes me think of my 6 year old granddaughter's visit. She has to have music on during meals at her home. Usually it is some kid stuff, but I do not have anything like she has at home, so I chose to play Joshua Bell during our dinner. When I placed the dessert before her, she looked up at me and said: "This music is so beautiful, I want to play the violin just like that". What more could I say.
He is inspiring, and she is right. This album is beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2007-05-30

I play this for my grandson to nap by. It is so relaxing and wonderful!

5 out of 5 stars Over and over and over...........2007-05-17

That's how I want to play this CD! It's a wonderful line-up of rich, mellow, captivating compositions played with a warmth and vibrancy that is seldom heard. Joshua at his very best. You won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Non-standard CD format.......2007-04-22

The music on this CD deserves five stars, but the CD itself is a non-standard format that doesn't work on all players. There's a tiny warning on the back of the CD. You won't notice the warning until you discover that the CD doesn't work on your player. My Macintosh computer wouldn't read the non-standard format so there was no way for me to listen in my office or put the music on my iPod.

A friend's PC was able to read the CD and make a copy in standard format that can be read on any player, including my Mac. The story had a happy ending, but I can not comprehend why the publisher chose the oddball CD specification.

The music is excellent and worth the trouble of making a copy, but the publisher really shouldn't make you go to that effort just to listen to a CD that you paid for.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful surprise.......2007-04-13

This recording has quickly become a most favorite cd in my collection. My personal preference had always been for opera and not symphony concert. To hear the violin replace the voice and line of the opera singer (in two of the excerpts) was a wonderful surprise for me, and has enhanced my enjoyment of all of this recording.

4 out of 5 stars MacRae and Jones head a superb and O.K. adaptation.......2007-03-16

The film adaptation of Oklahoma heralded a technological breakthrough in widescreen cinema just as the original stage musical ushered in the integrated book musical. As such this film adaptation was treated as a special occasion, well-supervised by the creators themselves. The soundtrack, featured here, boasts sterling performances from MacRae and Jones making the most of their portrayals of Curly and Laurey, backed by a charismatic cast and superb orchestrations. And of course let's not forget the enveloping stereo sound that holds up well even today.

Despite being a Hollywood star, Gordon MacRae performs the part of Curly as if he was born to play it even on the stage. He shines vocally in his renditions of Oh, what a Beautiful Mornin' and Surrey with the Fringe on Top. He is well-partnered by Shirley Jones as a fresh and pert Laurey, lending her beautiful voice to the part. Although we don't hear much of her on this soundtrack, her partnering MacRae in People Will Say We're in Love exudes a masterful chemistry, as if they were setting sparks off at each other in their rendition of the song. Gene Nelson makes a dashing Will Parker and is equally well-matched by Gloria Grahame as Ado Annie. Grahame renders I Cain't Say No splendidly and partners Nelson in All er Nothin'. The supporting cast is filled out by Charlotte Greenwood's suitably caustic Aunt Eller and Rod Steiger's Jud. It's a pity that the film cut the song Lonely Room, otherwise Steiger would have better demonstrated the dark hues of the character of Jud. Yet it all adds up to a wonderful renditionh of this classic musical, enough to elicit a spontaneous YEOW! during this year of the Oklahoma centenary.

This EMI-Angel reissue offers one the advantage of the dance music and the main titles. This means that the listener gets the Kansas City and Farmer and the Cowman dance sequences, as well as the extended Dream Ballet. The only downside is the extraneous sound effects lifted from a DVD copy of the movie. Yes I share many of your sentiments that these sound effects tend to grate, and long for Didier Deutsch to have used the original untainted studio vault versions. However, let's at least be thankful that the CD producers have offered us a more comprehensive version of the Oklahoma soundtrack that we could only have dreamt of in the past.

In short, this is a wonderful and valuable addition to the R&H discography, and is an equally celebrated rendition of the score like the original Broadway cast recording. Warmly recommended to those who seek even their first version of Oklahoma.

Oklahoma has never sounded better as sung by Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones in the 1955 movie version of Rodgers and Hammerstein's unforgettable Broadway musical. The memory of MacRae's beautiful voice lives on with this CD. I never tire of hearing this wonderful music. From the opening overture to the finale you will feel as though you're right in the theater.
