4 out of 5 stars Cosmic cowboys riding high.......2006-03-12

So I've been getting into Ryan Adams lately. It doesn't take long to find out that Adams stands in the great shadow of Gram Parsons, who in his day paved the way for people like the New Riders.

The New Riders, for their part, consisted of Grateful Dead alumni (read: Jerry Garcia) and Dead proteges. The New Riders toured fairly extensively with the Dead as their opening band.

This album recalls nothing so much as the Dead's "American Beauty". There's a couple of duds, but when they let loose on the wah wah pedals while riffing on country music, the going gets weird, and the weird get going....or something like that.

If you're into Lucinda, Ryan Adams, Wilco, or any of the so called alt country bands, you need to get back to the source. Start right here.

5 out of 5 stars Garden of Eden.......2006-01-11

For all you Deadheads - this is country Dead ! But it is much more. This was a great live Band (without Garcia) and many songs on this album were the keys to their live performance. And none of the reviews mentioned Garden of Eden which to me is an outstanidn song, particularly if you have heard or have a live version. If I were going to buy only one NRPS "album" , this would be it.

4 out of 5 stars A forgotten gem of country rock.......2005-06-08

In the early 1970's, a talented group called the New Riders of the Purple Sage was making waves as a popular touring act. They were born of the Grateful Dead - Jerry Garcia was a founding member, and the two bands toured together before the NRPS finally struck out on their own. Today, some of the band's live performances are being released on CD, so they are enjoying something of a comeback. This is the only studio album that includes Jerry Garcia, whose bold, unconventional playing of the pedal steel guitar dominates most tracks. Also included are three live bonus tracks. It's hard to place this album in any one genre - it is a bit country, a bit rock, and a bit bluegrass. Rock fans shouldn't shy away from trying this album because of its country stylings - if you are a fan of the Grateful Dead, the Allmans, the Band, or any of the other great Folk/Country/Rock bands of the 60's and 70's, you might find that this album is a delightful and addictive treat.

4 out of 5 stars It is rather damn good........2004-06-06

Essentially this album is in my opinion one of the pinnacles of country rock ( a genre of music that is today played only by bands that are on CMT). Although this is not the Best NRPS release this is still music that is far above average. The obvious highlights of the album include the famous Glendale Train, Henry, and Portland Woman. Henry is a humurous little song about drugs, and a guy going down to Mexico. Portland Woman and Glendale Train are both a bit more somber songs but their greatness is by no means diminshed.
Overall this album is a very strong release however the reason that I took off a star is because it was completely uneeded to remaster the recording that was already very good in the first place though it sounds a bit bad on my record player as it is scratched. The extra tracks are however a nice little touch.

4 out of 5 stars Country Rock Ride.......2004-03-16

New Riders Of The Purple Sage's debut album is one of the best country-rock albums of the early 70's. The band was made up of John "Marmaduke" Dawson, Dave Tolbert & David Nelson, but was augmented by Jerry Garcia on steel guitar, Mickey Hart on percussion and Spencer Dryden on drums. The band stared out as a project for the Grateful Dead's Mr. Garcia, Mr. Hart & Phil Lesh to fully indulge themselves with the country sounds that they had touched upon in their music. The music veers from straightforward country-rock of "Henry", "Portland Woman" & "I Don't Know You" to "Dirty Business" which is an eight-minute track that leans towards a weird mix of acid rock & country. The album's highlight is "All I Ever Wanted" which contains the most beautiful and delicate steel guitar work from Mr. Garcia. New Riders Of The Purple Sage is a must for any fans of the Grateful Dead, but should be equally enjoyed by fans of the Flying Burrito Brothers, The Byrds or CSN&Y.

4 out of 5 stars This album is a must for your collection, "Panama Red" alone is worth the price of addmission!.......2006-10-15

The Dead, Skynard, Allman Bros. & Eagles mixed into a bowl and fired up! I bought this album solely for "Panama Red" but the entire album turned out to be very enjoyable. The sound of the album is unique but also reminiscent of other bands that were popular at the time of it's release (1973). Mostly, the lyrics are funny but occasionally become introspective. The "drug culture" and language that is present in the songs take you back to a seeminly simpler time, this one is definitely worth buying.

4 out of 5 stars Cool Country Rock.......2006-03-18

I first bought this album in 1975. Its amazing how after 30 yrs the songs still sound as good as they did way back then. Very good collection of tunes. Half the cd is country and the other half is rock. Total track time is around 30 minutes. Very good music.

5 out of 5 stars Trust me, this rocks........2006-03-16

I see there are already plenty of reviews of Panama Red already, so I really have no excuse for writing my own. All the same...

Firstly, I think people who don't like this album are probably thinking of NRPS as the dead's little sister, which frankly it is not. It has very little to do with the dead. It's psycadelic cowboy rock.
It is also totally fantastic. There is not a song on the album that I don't like.
Here's a mini review of the songs-

"Panama Red"- Totally a classic. First time I heard it I was singing along by the end.
"It's All Right With Me"- Oo-Oo- yeeeaaah, to qoute it.
"Lonesome LA Cowboy"- The lines about smokin' dope, snortin' coke are great. Heck, the whole song is.
"(Ok Sam)Important exportin' man"- Very catchy. Greatest saxaphone.
"One Too Many Stories"- Oh, woe. The only one I couldn't call my favorite. But it's still fine.
"Kick in the head"- Absolutely my favorite. The lyrics are bizarre and typicle Robert Hunter. (Funny the dead never preformed it)
"You Should Have Seen Me Runnin"- Lord. Buffy Sainte-Marie is the greatest back up ever. I don't know why there isn't more of her and less of Donna Jean. (???)
"Teardrops in My Eyes"- I can't help dancing when this plays. Happiest sad song ever.
"L.A Lady"-Really well done. Good singing, good music, good lyrics. What more could you ask for?
"Thank the Day"- Typical Torbert (It's about sailing). The lyrics "I couldn't keep from smiling" must apply to the listener.
"Cement, Clay and Glass"- Wait a sec. THIS is my favorite. Great anti urban sprawl song.
I have only one beef, and trust me it's not the song's fault. I guess when they put it onto cd they changed it a little, because at the end when he (David Nelson, I think. Don't qoute me) is singing "Cement, Clay and Glass" over and over you can hear Donna Jean Godchaux singing signifigantly louder than the he is. This isn't a problem on the record (I know because I have it), just the Cd.

Thats it for the songs, but I think I should mention one other thing thats unfortunate: the packaging for the Cd is not nearly as exciting as it was for the record. The fantastic Panama Red cartoon is rather squashed. Aslo, the sleave that had the lyrics and the picture of NRPS with the grungy dog is not reproduced anywhere.
Thats really all, and, frankly, I can deal with the two small drawbacks because the CD means I can listen to it in the car, lend it to my friends, whatever.

It's pretty hard to dislike the New Riders, so you should definatley give this Cd a try.

5 out of 5 stars Hippie Culture USA.......2005-10-24

First..Woody Guthrie, then Easy Rider, then the Byrd's Sweetheart Of The Rodeo then The New Riders...this rock and roll country and western offshoot of the Dead came into their commercial heyday with these bright unashamed batch of songs.
Their self titled debuet is the most Dead like, their 2nd Powerglide pushed them into speedier funkier grooves while Gypsy Cowboy defined them in a more roots folk setting.
Panama Red became their anthem as the Merry Pranksters of rock culture.
Of course the themes of many of the songs are somewhat comical these days but eventhough the CD is a short one the songs and tunes are alive and still sound fresh. The ballads have beautiful melody, the rockers rock like Commander Cody and the production was top-notch for it's day with bright loud lovely sound.
Their ist release with Garcia and company is a classic..this is the one to forget your troubles with.

3 out of 5 stars What was once entertaining..........2005-07-19

I listened to a lot of this type of stuff in high school. I think it's an okay album but one grows tired of the many cheesy drug references. The two songs on the album that I think have stood the test are the ones that have little flash compared to the signature numbers on the album. "Teardrops in my Eye" is a cover an old Red Allen country number. It works fine on this album. "Cement, clay and glass" a song about urban sprawl was appropos in the 70s and is so now.

I tip my hat to Jerry for prodding his pals to do some country. I'm glad this album was made and I listened to it a lot in the 70s. I'll likely enjoy an occasional track should I ever hear them somewhere but only some of the album has stood the test of time.

Album Description

August 27, 1972 found the New Riders once again on the bill with the Grateful Dead for what turned out to be one of the more legendary events in this subculture's history. Chuck Kesey (brother of author and Merry Prankster icon Ken Kesey) put together this benefit concert, which quickly became known as the "Field Trip," for the Springfield Creamery. As fellow Prankster Ken Babbs recalls, "no one ever suspected it would become a historic event with an attendance of 20,000 on the hottest day ever…they ran out of water, the guitars warped in the heat and now everyone you talk to, hundreds of thousands, were there on that all time greatest most spectacular day."

THIS CD WAS PRODUCED FROM THE ORIGINAL 16-TRACK ANALOG MASTER TAPES RUNNING AT 15 I.P.S. WE'VE TRIED TO PRESERVE THIS DAY AS IT WAS…AN OUTDOOR EVENT ON AN EXTREMELY HOT DAY WITH AN ASSORTMENT OF MERRY PRANKSTERS ON THE LOOSE. WE THINK YOU'LL ENJOY!

5 out of 5 stars Sun-Stoke Daydream.......2007-06-13

My buddy ROK attended the Grateful Dead's, third night at the Berkeley Community Theatre (8/24/72) Run. He had lot's of news to report, the Dead had played a KILLER Dark Star AND The New Riders were a Surprise at the Show and played a Set before The Dead hit the stage. Well, since I was unable to attend this big night because Tickets to these shows were very hard to come by, (Impossible, was a better word). I had missed out once again, but there was more...MORE???

ROK had a Flyer handed to him at the BCT Show, and it said: "Cum to the Creamery" a Field Trip for the Freaks in Veneta, Oregon will happen on Sunday Aug 27, Starring the Grateful Dead, The New Riders of the Purple Sage, the Merry Pranksters and Many surprises !!! It was Hand-Made, But, there it was, Sunday, two days from now, somewhere in Oregon, Man, this was HUGE !!!! I was all of 15 years old, there was no way my parents were gonna allow me to up and Go 500 miles North, to a "Gathering of the Tribes". ROK, was 17 and didn't give a %#*$ about what his parents were going to say or do to him. So, needless to say ROK, found a ride North and went on a 'Field Trip' (That Guy could write Quite a Book of all his adventures, I'm still waiting!).

This Show, that became: "THE SHOW" as soon as ROK got back home, (The following Tuesday). The stuff of Legends...The One not to be Missed.

Great Soundboard Tapes of BOTH The Grateful Deads & New Riders Sets have been traded since the Late 80's AND The Wonderful Bootleg Video called: "Sunshine Daydream" captures the whole Vibe Quite Nicely. But, this CD is the first "Official" release to see the Light of Day, and it's a "Must-Have" Purchase for any Fan of the NRPS. With 17 Cuts (3, are Stage Annoucements), this is the "Classic Line-Up" in all their Glory. John Dawson, David Nelson, Dave Tolbert, Buddy Cage & Spencer Dryden. Check out the Song selection and you will see the best stuff from the first three records: "Last Lonely Eagle", "I Don't Need No Doctor", "Lochinvar" and "Louisiana Lady". This CD has the same great sound of that tape I heard way back in the 80's (It's a Bettyboard). Do not Pass this one up, BUY IT... Or, find a Time Machine because I for one would sure like to go back to 1972 for this one.

GREAT DISK... FIVE STARS...FER REAL!!!

5 out of 5 stars It just don't get better than this!.......2006-09-07

The same record label that brings us this disc has also issued other "legitimate bootlegs" of early NRPS concerts, and they've ranged from not too good (the unfortunate "Live: Worcester, MA 4/4/73"), to downright excellent. This one falls into the latter category!

Originally a benefit concert for a local small business, it was apparently intended to be a relatively small affair, also featuring the Grateful Dead (though they don't appear on this disc). But as might be expected, it ballooned into a bona fide "event" in an almost "Woodstockian" fashion (though of less biblical proportions). Many more people attended than were ever expected, and in addition, it was reportedly hot as hell. But it sounds as if a great time was had by all.

New Riders never sounded better, and the sound quality of the recording is amazingly good. The intent seems to have been to present the event as it happened, with a minimum of editing. Stage announcements and rap with the audience are included pretty much intact, and the whole thing really does remind one of the old "Woodstock" album, except more intimate and genuine and a helluva lot better recorded. You can really imagine yourself in the audience (and by all attendance reports, if you lived in the area, you probably were).

There aren't many places you can still go to find this kind of a scene and atmosphere-- nor this kind of music, for that matter-- and that's a real drag. Fans of the so-called "alternative" scene (damned if I can figure out what it's supposed to be an alternative to) could learn a lot from discs (and bands) like this one. This is what music is supposed to be about-- and used to be, before the money became more important than the music. We 'll never see this time again, but it's great that discs like this one exist to remind us of what once was. Great stuff!

4 out of 5 stars Great Album .......2005-12-19

This is a great selection of songs from a great sometimes forgotten band. Its nice to hear some good ol' jam music with some great songs. They just don't make this kind of music anymore, a real shame.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Collection Of Feel Good LA Country Music.......2004-02-26

A great follow-up to their self-titled debut, Powerglide is pure dayglow cowboy. LA Country, 3-AM Sunset Blvd, feel good rock n' roll. There's lots to like in this 11 catchy song collection. Unfortunately the NRPS were to put out one last great album after this one, that one being Panama Red. Later incarnations of the band seemed listless and uninspired.

5 out of 5 stars missing track.......2004-01-25

this has always been one of my favorites since i bought it back in the ol' LP days. NRPS' particularly haunting version of "Long Black Veil" very sadly is absent from the CD. Dave Matthews and Johnny Cash ran off with it, i guess.

4 out of 5 stars Just to say.......2003-03-10

I'm not really a fan of country music, although somehow I had heard of NROTPS. The one track that really stands out from the rest is "rainbow" - all the rest seem fairly average. Does anyone else see this?

5 out of 5 stars Tight, Solid, Talented.......2002-06-03

If I were the Original Riders of the Purple Sage I would have been proud of the New Riders carrying on the tradition. These guys were damned good, but so underrated. Powerglide is one of their best (Panama Red is my sentimental favorite)and I was surprised that after feeling that it didn't get any better than Panama Red, Powerglide had me and my whole college crew agreeing it was just as solid a set of tunes with tight performances to boot.
My kids don't know what to make of these guys. They know I do not particularly like mainstream country music, but are not surprised that I like stuff by the NRPS. These are universal good time party tunes. NRPS playing always signals a good musical trip by a bunch of guys actually more talented than some of their better known peers in their heyday.

5 out of 5 stars So pleased this has been released on CD.......2000-05-01

Such a great album album! New Riders in their prime! Incredible song writing, lead and harmony vocals. John "Marmaduke" Dawson, David Nelson, and the late, great Dave Torbert, Buddy Cage on steel, and Spencer Dryden on drums, with some special guest appearances. Some of their best work is here on this album.

I hope some day Columbia will also release Home, Home on the Road (live), Gypsy Cowboy, and Brujo.

Long associated with the Dead, these guys are so good in their own right. The musical style that is so much their own, far superior to the watered down "country-rock" that became "popular" in the 70's.

"Mescalito drenched hippie-cowboy soul" may be one way to define their "sound".

This is "goose bump" music folks, right there with Rick Nelson's "Garden Party", the Burrito's "Gilded Palace of Sin", or Gram Parson's "GP/Greivous Angel".

A must for any lover of good music with a cosmic country-fied tinge.

4 out of 5 stars Classic hippie-stoner country from the early 1970s.......2006-08-28

This is a long overdue reissue of a best-of set that gathers the best tracks from this hippiebilly band from Northern California. The New Riders were originally a side project of Jerry Garcia and some chums from the Grateful Dead, but as their attention turned elsewhere, the band took on a life of its own. They specialized in drug-oriented novelty songs ("Henry", "Panama Red") and shambling boogie-rock covers of rock and R&B oldies. It still holds up pretty well, especially if you're interested in the roots of the modern alt-country scene.

(Note: This edition (2006) adds five bonus live tracks, expanding the set from its original 1976 vinyl release and the previous, 1990 CD reissue.) (DJ Joe Sixpack)

5 out of 5 stars New Riders of the Purple Sage/Home, Home on the Road.......2005-03-08

I agree with the previous review, 100%.

I'm a huge New Riders fan...as well as Commander Cody & his LPA. Both are great. But, New Riders of the Purple Sage...are my FAVORITE country rock band. Always will be!

Other great/favorite Country Rock bands are:

Poco, Pure Prarie League, Byrds, et al.

Anyway, "Home, Home on the Road," is EXCELLENT. I highly recommend it! I've been waiting for this album, to become available on CD...for many years. I bought it, as soon as it became available. Brujo, is also a great album.

5 out of 5 stars Best Live New Riders...........2004-11-07

In the early 70's, two of the best live LP's were Commander Cody's "Live From Deep In the Heart of Texas" and the New Riders' "Home, Home On the Road." While the Cody LP has been on CD for years, it is only recently that the New Riders LP was converted to CD. A few years ago while waiting for him to perform, I had a conversation with Buddy Cage, steel player for the New Riders, and I asked him why "Home, Home On the Road" had never been converted to CD. He said he was surpirsed himself, especially since the LP's producer Jerry Garcia had spent countless hours going through nine months of live tapes from a New Riders tour. He told me Jerry had picked the absolute best recordings from that tour.

So if you like the New Riders, get this CD. Don't waste your money on the other live New Riders CD's. This one is by far the best. The Brujo section is from a studio album that is fair, but the live section is more than worth the price of the collection. It's in the same category as Commander Cody's live recordings. You'll see why these two bands had some of the best live shows going in the 70's.

    Album Description

Fresh on the heels of the October, 1972 release of their third album, Gypsy Cowboy, the New Riders of the Purple Sage embarked on an East Coast tour that would quickly solidify their reputation as America's premier psychedelic-country-rock outfit. Pulling into the historic confines of Tremont Street's Boston Music Hall on a Tuesday night in December, the New Riders had their engines primed and delivered a powerful set of originals that included "Sutter's Mill," "Groupie" and "Whiskey" from Gypsy Cowboy, and fan favorites "Truck Drivin' Man," "Hello Mary Lou" and the stompin' show closer "Willie And The Hand Jive." With Buddy Cage now firmly entrenched behind the pedal steel guitar and taking the band to a new sonic plane, you can feel the energy and excitement of the night come solidly through on NRPS staples "Whatcha Gonna Do," "Portland Woman," "Last Lonely Eagle," " Louisiana Lady," "Glendale Train" and "I Don't Know You." A rollicking version of Chuck Berry's "School Days" displays their passion for boogie, and the evening's encores consist of folk-rocker and opening act Eric Andersen joining in on the fun for a version of his "I Love To Sing My Ballads, Mama (But They Only Want To Hear Me Rock & Roll)" and the Rolling Stones' "Honky Tonk Women." Boston Music Hall 12/5/72 was produced directly off the master analog reel to reel recording and was mastered by Stephen Barncard—who's production credits include the first three NRPS albums and the Grateful Dead's American Beauty.

4 out of 5 stars Damn fine lineup even without Garcia.......2005-08-18

While I have a soft spot for the original incarnation of the New Riders, with Garcia on pedal steel and Lesh on bass, they were still a formidable unit in 1972, when this gem of a show was recorded.

I have a bunch of NRPS bootlegs on CD, from '70, '71, '77 and other years, and while the '71 show from the Dead's historic spring run at the Fillmore is my favorite, this runs a close second.

Most of my favorite songs are here ("Truck-Drivin' Man," "Henry," "Glendale Train"), as are some nice covers in the form of Chuck Berry's "School Days" and Cash's "Long Black Veil.

Buddy Cage is nice on the pedal steel, but like I said, I just have a soft spot for Garcia's loping style, which carried through surprisingly well on pedal. Cage is a little more technical, but still very enjoyable.

Like the Dead, NRPS have an awkwardly endearing harmony that makes you smile, and the boogie to back it up. Good good stuff.

    5 out of 5 stars AMAZING.......2004-11-11

The sound quality was much better then I ever expected, and the package that it came in was unlike the typical CD case. Very cool stuff!

4 out of 5 stars Boston Show Rocks and Is NO LONGER ON CD-Rs.......2004-08-27

You should ignore the outdated review posted about these being on CD-Rs. They are no longer on CD-Rs and are now pressed glass masters. Aside from that, this is a great show that captures the New Riders in their prime.

    5 out of 5 stars NRPS Relived........2003-12-12

After getting this 2 CD set Live from Boston Music Hall 12/5/72, NRPS raised the bar on their bootleg release series. The sound quality on this is amazing and it is hard to believe that it came from a 2 track master. You can hear every country rockin' detail in this show. Highlights include Contract, School Days, and Hello Mary Lou. If you are a NRPS fan make sure you get this one.

5 out of 5 stars Five Star Country Rock.......2001-05-06

Gene Pitney should be proud of them - the best version of Hello Mary Lou by far with a stunning display by Buddy Cage on pedal steel. If you come across their version of You Never Can Tell you'll hear how even a Chuck Berry original can be upstaged - it was obviously meant to be played in the Country Rock style that the New Riders conveyed better than any other group.

5 out of 5 stars Must have for New Riders fans!!!.......1998-10-11

From the classics "Kick in the Head" and "Henry" to "Panama Red", what an increadable collection from this awsome band.

    Product Description

Austin, Texas, 1975. The “Outlaw Country” movement was reaching its peak with weekly musical meetings of hippies and rednecks at the 1500 capacity Armadillo World Headquarters. Whether the charge was being led by local luminaries like Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Freddie King, or by California country-rock imports like the New Riders of the Purple Sage and Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen, the Armadillo’s legend was becoming well known throughout the country. Before it was all said and done, the Armadillo hosted everyone from Bruce Springsteen, Jerry Garcia and Frank Zappa to Bill Monroe, Gram Parsons and Ray Charles. The New Riders of the Purple Sage had been making Austin a home away from home for a few years by the time this middle night of a three-night run of performances came about. Bassist Skip Battin, formerly of The Byrds, had been in the band for a full year now, contributing heavily to the Riders’ 1974 album Brujo, and his unique playing style and energy are an essential element to the band’s good time vibe that permeates this recording. 6/13/75 features crisp versions of “Lonesome L.A. Cowboy,” “Henry,” “Louisiana Lady” and “Glendale Train.” The Austin atmosphere kicks into high gear as Battin sings his ode to the lone star state capital, “Austin, Texas,” which jams right into Dawson’s Austin inspired “Instant Armadillo Blues.” Long before there ever was the term ‘jam-band,’ the New Riders strut some psychedelic stuff on fan favorites “Dirty Business” and “Portland Woman.” Other highlights and rarities include a very early take on the Battin penned “Strangers On A Train,” “My Dog Peaches,” a never before released Dawson song, David Nelson singing Merle Haggard’s “I’m Bringing Home Good News,” Dawson going Tex-Mex on Freddy Fender’s “Before The Next Teardrop Falls” and a very rare Riders performance of the Gary U.S. Bonds hit “New Orleans.” The New Riders Live at the Armadillo was mastered directly off of the original 1/4 track reel to reel recording and captures this night just as it was—in all of its hot, sweaty, beer-soaked and smoke-filled glory.

4 out of 5 stars Hot from the Sun.......2006-05-04

This is actually a pretty good representation of the 75-6 edition of the band, featuring Skip Battin on bass & vocals. While he is and isn't, quite the songwriter Torbert was, he brings some material to this disk that well makes up for the somewhat weak contributions he made to the final 2 Byrds albums. The Kufala company has seemingly learned its lessons following the disastrous first release they pumped out, in that all the songs feature well balanced mix of instruments and voices- though you do notice as each singer's mic is tweaked for their first featured song.
The band though are in excellent form- "Strangers on a Train" and "Portland Woman" stand out on the first disk, which is to say that the preceding tracks are not so bad- just that these two are where they catch fire.
Side two features several country tunes (Merle Haggard's Im Bring in' Home Good News" as well as their set staple La Bamba & acouple more), and an extended "Crooked Judge" with a drum-bass solo workout. Nelson and Cage are in great form on this and anyone who wants an education in country picking should at least take on the intro to Henry...
I like this CD better than the other Kufala Cd's, which is regrettable because I happen to really love Torbert's performing but as it is, this is as good a picture of the Battin band as you are going to find.
