4 out of 5 stars Like re-discovering an old friend.......2007-06-26

Back in the day, I had *all* of Ms. Previn's LPs. I have very much enjoyed adding the CDs to my collection. Now if someone would just re-release the CD with "Did Jesus Have a Baby Sister?"......

5 out of 5 stars As good as I remember.......2007-03-09

I used to listen to Dory years ago. I loved all her albums. Although this misses some of the songs I would have wanted, it was nice to hear them again.
I'll also glad to say that I am no longer into being depressed, so the lyrics are not as meaningful as they were in my days of adolescent angst.

2 out of 5 stars uhhh.....yeah........2005-03-02

I am a fan of MANY types of music and have been for many years...SO....I understand that different types of music appeal to different types of people. Either Dory Previn is over my head or beneath me...i'm not sure which, lol! I do not see the appeal in her songs or her style...in fact...i find them quite irritating. MY advice to anyone who is thinking of buying any of her albums is to proceed with caution.....cause this stuff ain't for everybody! LOL But thats ok...to each his own! :)

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Piece of Music.......2003-05-06

I first purchased "Mythical Kings and Iguanas" in 1971 when it was first issued on the MediArts label. The only thing I knew about Dory, was that she was, or had been married to Andre Previn, and that she had written the lyrics to "Valley of the Dolls". With that, and the fact that I liked the look of the cover of the album, I purchased it! I never, in all my life, was more fascinated with an album than this one. And as of today, it remains probably, my favorite album of all time. She is a master story teller, with bruding, dark , haunting lyrics. Her images are so intense, you can not only visualize them, you can smell and taste them. Her statement on basic human conditions and emotions border on neurotic (I love writers like that), and yet you empathize with her. All tracks are amazing, but "Her Mothers Daughter", in my opinion is the stand out. It will send chills down your spin, it is so hauting and scary. Dory is probably the most prolific female songwriter of the '60's and '70's, and yet not widly recognized at all.
I was so wild about this album, I forced all my friends th hear it, they went out and purchased it, also. I went through 4 copies of this album, and my last copy is badly used. I think I was the only person, along with my friends, who actual bought his on vinyl way back when.
To hear it on CD is a joy, no cracks, scratches, and most of all,the quality is remarkable. The original master was terrible, so the original pressings sounded "cloudy". The CD format, I hear instruments, and vocal backings I never heard on vinyl.

If you love female songwriters, and you love to feel suicidal after listening to an artist---BUY THIS, it will put you off the deep edge!

5 out of 5 stars "Such a Ride".......2003-04-21

I first bought these two albums back in the days of vinyl. I loved the album "Mythical Kings and Iguanas" back then. . . and I love the album just as much, if not more now on CD! Dory had the magic knack of combining emotional "picture painting poetry" with melody. When she sings of "Those Lemon Haired Ladies", you could actually "see" the emotional contest Dory knew she would lose in the end. . . yes, "the game is fixed" she sings because she knows it is.
Track after track hooks you into her music and experiences. To my mind, the most memorable and moving musical tour d'force is the track "Going Home (Mythical Kings and Iguanas)" She builds the song into a full gospel chorus crescendo (as her own vocal quiets and fades) into "Going home is such a ride. . . such a long and lonely ride"! Dory Previn has 'soul'! This track will leave you in a spiritual place you've never been before and yet you will feel quite at home in.
I loved this album years and years ago and was thrilled to find preserved pristine on CD. It's a great and timeless album. Thanks tyou Dory Previn wherever you are these days. . . you've made a lasting contribution to American and world music.

Easy comparisons to Los Lobos have long dogged New Orleans' own cross-cultural pot-stirrers, the Iguanas. But the band's return from a four-year recording respite here cuts a subtle, distinctive musical swath all its own, culminating in what's arguably the most rewarding album of their career. While informed on "Machete y Maiz," the evocative "Un Avion," and the haunting slinkiness of "Abandonado" by the same rich conjunto/Tex-Mex/Chicano R&B influences as their East L.A. soulmates, the band's creative axis of vocalists Rod Hodges and Joe Cabral and bassist Rene Coma (powered by drummer Doug Garrison and Derek Huston on sax) has inspired anything but a predictable artistic orbit here. Anchored by the loping, sunny pop daydream "Yesterday" and the title track's gently optimistic radio paean (a collaboration between Hodges and Dave Alvin), the band simmers zydeco, blues, and smart pop hooks into a mix that veers from the sly playfulness of "Sugarcane," "Mexican Candy," and the tragi-comic squalor of "The Liquor Dance" to more traditional party-hearty rhythms of "Flame On" and "Zacatecas." Its production is as subtle and spacious as its evocative songs, a languorous hour of music that evokes the dappled sunlight and fevered grooves of a half-dozen cultures. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars No Justice.......2005-02-21

The fickle pop marketplace often rewards bands like Los Lonely Boys while overlooking a band like the Iguanas. I really like this album. Also,if you can find it,check out their CD Super Ball. The Iguanas frequently tour and they play well live.

2 out of 5 stars No staying power.......2003-11-08

A very lackluster effort. Sophomoric lyrics and for the most part had nothing to distinguish itself. I liked the title track a lot, and a couple of other ballad type songs, but the rest was poorly done and little imagination.

4 out of 5 stars Low Voltage High Wattage.......2003-07-22

Buy this album. NOW! ??? Because, if you don't but it now, you will be kicking yourself later because it went of print so quickly or became instantly unavailable, unless nefarious means of obtention are your specialty. Try getting their album "Superball" now....There are 3 great kick start songs offering immediate listening pleasure. The balance all slip-slide into your daily routine ("...just like "Mexican Candy"..)through the bottom heavy groove that weaves its way thoughtout a finely produced album. No tinkley sounds here; these guys brood with the best of them.

4 out of 5 stars Summer time party fun.......2003-07-05

The Iguanas' "Plastic Silver and 9 Volt Heart" (Yep Roc) is one groove-y record, laidback, loping and made for a margarita in the summer shade or a cruise with the top down. There's nothing showy to the 13 cuts here, just a remarkably varied collection of easygoing music with healthy helping of Tex Mex stew. If you only own their debut album with the rollicking "Night of Sin," this is a time to take another listen to the boys from New Orleans.

The band recorded the disc live in the studio over eight days and it shows how they've progressed over the past decade. They take the timeworn basics of down home R&B, swamp rock and Tex Mex and mix and match, creating something new that fits as comfortably as a well-worn pair of jeans. This is confidently cool music, from the first blast of "Yesterday," a pop tune born of the marriage of Morphine and The Lovin' Spoonful, through the snaking twin sax blasts of "Zacatecas" on to the shuffling ballad that is "The First Kiss Is Free" and into the guitar rock of "I Dig You."

Of course, these guys know how to play party tunes. That's why Jimmy Buffett originally signed them to his label. Just listen to the dance-along cuts, "Flame On," which recalls Los Lobos, and "The Liquor Dance," sure to become a David Lindley favorite. With their electronically altered-vocals, they sound like remnants of an old mono rave-up.

Songwriter and vocalist Rod Hodges, with help from Dave Alvin on the title cut, has tendered his best set of tunes. And the boys in the band, multi-instrumentalist Rene Coman and Joe Cabral, tenor saxman Derek Huston and drummer Doug Garrison have conjured up a soundtrack for the summer.

5 out of 5 stars It gets better and better.......2003-06-04

I am a new Iguanas fan with this album. The track "Mexican Candy" moves between spanish and english seamlessly with the sweetest sax solo in the middle. Lyrics are sublime and the instrumentals are sweet and well-placed. Well produced, with a great sound, I would highly recommend this to anyone with an hankering for rockabilly and a new orleans sound without a heavy zydeco beat. Listen to the samples and check out the great lyrics and cool vibe from these guys.

The Iguanas is a musical cocktail of Tex-Mex, Zydeco, Salsa and '50s Be-Bop. One of the earlier concoctions by Exec. Producer Jimmy Buffett and Margueritaville Music. Some songs have both English and Spanish lyrics in the liner notes. Enjoyable to listen to AND dance to! Vocals, Sax, Guitars, Accordian, Drums, Percussion, Congas and Bongos.

4 out of 5 stars The Neglected Iguanas Album.......2003-05-09

At the time it was released, Super Ball was a disappointment comercially. And for some Iguanas fans it was so-so artistically. BUT ... hindsight has given this CD its long overdue, well, due. It spawned songs like "Benny's Cadillac" that remain live staples to this day. Heck, I think I heard the band play "Rock Star" last month. Perhaps Super Ball will remain the "transitional" album between the clearly great debut and Nuevo Boogaloo in the beginning and the band's latter day releases Sugar Town and Plastic Electric 9 Volt Heart. It's a keeper nonetheless.

1 out of 5 stars low point for the iguanas.......2001-08-18

Anne Rice's Iguanas.... After the first two albums this is depressing. The first two albums are solid 4 star and "Sugar Town" is a return to something familiar. Maybe they are casting out the demons of Margartiaville here?

3 out of 5 stars The Iguanas...Superball.......2000-05-21

Good music from a great bar band. Saw them live last year in Virginia and though they were tired, they put on a great show. If you ever see their first CD out there...BUY IT! It is a perfect CD. Every song is a charm and they easily move from lovely south of the border melodies and rhythms to Texas twang. I think though that the quality of material has prgressively dropped off with each new CD. What are we up to now? 4? Sugartown I thought was dissapointing considering the heat on the that first one.

5 out of 5 stars The Iguanas rock.......1999-03-30

This band is definitely one of the best "undiscovered" bands around -- they've got four albums out, but the first two are no longer available. I saw them live once when they were touring a few months ago. This album in particular is excellent -- if you like the sax you'll dig this band!!! Give it a whirl!! If you want more than a few seconds of real audio go to liveconcerts.com -- they have a 90+ minute concert on there!!

5 out of 5 stars The Iguana's at the Rock N Bowl.......1999-03-03

If you ever visit New Orleans, make it a point to schedule your trip when the Iguanas are back in town and playing at the lound and lively Rock N Bowl. You won't be sorry. The House of Blues has all the money and all that jive, Tipitina's is too far uptown...hit the Rock N Bowl and let your backbone slip. Get Stella out there on the dancefloor and watch her groove come back. Like many another complaining Iguanas fan, I can't get copies of their first and second CDs since I left the Gulf, and their 4th CD is only available if you know who to call with the right passwords. A band this good needs better marketing. Music fans shouldn't have to look this hard to find music this good.

3 out of 5 stars spanish language music for gringos.......2006-08-30

I like the Iguanas. What others complain about them I actually like...they change direction with each new album. They can rock, jam, big band, folk and sing ethnic music.

I have never liked spanish language music. Nothing against the language but I always thought it took away from the ROCK. This cd changed my opinion.

Essentially, the Iguanas are a New Orleans roots band that blends different styles. They are good musicians but they show restraint and rarely jam out on the songs (live they do extend themselves more).

I feel that this is their most folksy work that embraces their spanish influences. My favorite song... "Oye Isabel" of course!

This band should come out with a compilation cd

5 out of 5 stars The best thing they recorded.......2004-06-16

This CD is great and is by far the best that the Iguanas have ever done. For some reason they didn't stick with this sound. I agree with the above review that this one never grows old. If you liked this, try "Pepe and the Bottle Blondes." They are less of a rock group than the Iguanas and have more of a big band sound, but they do some of the same songs and are a lot of fun.

5 out of 5 stars Grew into a favorite.......2003-04-28

We purchased this at an Iguanas concert many years ago, and while we liked it a lot at first, it has grown and grown on us, to the point that it stays in the car player and cycles over and over. It's fun, catchy and at times poignant. The bass player -- Rene Coman, I believe -- is superb, and the dual saxes make for a wonderfully distinct sound. I love the heavy use of accordian on this CD and was disappointed to read that they moved away from it in the new album.

3 out of 5 stars bouncin' back.......2001-08-18

After the low point that was "Superball" a lot of the life and spirit are once again beating with "Sugar Town". Not quite to the standards of the first two albums, but much more hopeful. If you cannot find the first two releases, this captures 3 times the spirit of "Superball". It sounds like the Igauanas. Hope still springs, because when they are on !!!

3 out of 5 stars Mixed emotions, but a good turnout.......2001-06-25

Having had the fourth Iguanas album for some time, I've been reluctant to write a mixed review for a band I'm otherwise wild about. The album opens with two solid tour de forces "Captured" and "La Llanta Se Me Poncho," which highlights the divergent influences of the Iguanas, a band that would easily be at home in a suburban garage cranking out rock beats, or in a Mexican cantina. The third track, however, suffers serious problems, as to my ear, the lyrics can't be understood and, like Super Ball, the liner notes lack lyrics of any type. "Born Again Devil" is redeemed only by Rod Hodges' blistering harmonica. The rest of the album bounces from highs to lows. The highs being "Dear Walter," inspired by a Mexican psychic; "La Güera Felix," which has a catchy accordion riff; and the self-described social commentary of "Latin Kings," which could easily serve as the sequel to "Boom Boom Boom," from their second album, 'Nuevo Boogaloo.' "Love Terrifies Me," "You Killed My Buzz," and "Arrimate" punctuate the album with slight-let downs, however. Probably the most interesting song on the album is "Si Amanece Nos Vamos," where drummer Doug Garrison sits out to be replaced by a drum machine that begins the song with a fade-in and ends it with a fade-out. The song itself can be best described as a haunting bolero featuring Hodges and Joe Cabral. Certainly, this would have made a better last track than "Arrimate." Overall, the album is a good performance by the band on their first self-produced album after breaking from Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville, however with four tracks being underperformances by these usual overachievers, I can't bring myself to give it more than three stars. A worthwhile investment, but its by no means the best of a truly great band.

3 out of 5 stars A Unique Blend of Tex-Mex & R+B.......2000-11-06

I love this band. Their unique blend of Tex-Mex sensibilities combined with some good old rock'n'roll and backed by a healthy dose of R&B from New Orleans produced an instantly recognizable sound. Joe Cabral and Derek Houston's tight saxophone lines, Rod Hodges' shimmering guitar or a driving accordion and J. René Coman/Doug Garrison's funky backbeat created an ultimate party band.

The Iguanas have developed a cult-like following over the last eight years. In 1993 they landed a national record deal with Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville Records (distributed by MCA), and their self-titled debut release produced such rockin' gems as ("...darling let's give in to this") Night of Sin and You Make It Hard. Interspaced with these were the latin-tinged hits (I'm) Nervous ("ever since that day/when we went all the way") and Dark And Dangerous Love.

Their second album Nuevo Bugaloo quickly followed in 1994. From the opening Oye, Isabel to the closing Hey, Sweet Darling Hodges and Cabral delivered hot rocking tunes in both English and Español while Coman contributed a cool cha-cha or a tango.

However for Superball released in 1996, The Iguanas picked up a new producer and a sloppier sound that was closer to their live performances. As co-producers they also included a couple of self-indulgent duds that wouldn't have made it otherwise. Still there were hidden treasures, such as the uppity Lupita, the laid back I Moved Too Slow or the surprising Mil Demonios (A Thousand Demons).

With Sugar Town, The Iguanas took a bold step and released the CD themselves on their own label. Why? Simply put, they were seeking more control. They didn't like the hierarchy of a national label and they didn't like the process of assembling studio recordings. Coman and the band produced an album that comes close to their live shows; however, in the process they also created a safe record. There are few surprises here - rock alternates with occasional songs in Spanish. The few exceptions are Si Amanece Nos Vamos (We'll Leave When Dawn Comes) which features Hodges' tired vocals and wandering guitar with a tape delay, Cabral's bajo sexto and a drum machine, and the single Captured, noteworthy for Garrison's drumming and a burning guitar solo by one of the band's guests Jeff Treffinger (the album's engineer). I also liked Arrimate, that features another guest, Mark Mullins, on trombone.

In my opinion, Iguanas should've stayed with the national label. It might have been frustrating for them to battle a committee over their CDs' booklets, but at least all the previous ones are more informative than the current one. They might have been resenting the recording studio tricks, but that's how they created their most interesting tracks. I feel with their unique sound, Iguanas could've been today following Dave Matthews Band to a national prominence.

But I'm not the band's member or their manager; all I can do is support them. And if you find you like them, you can do the same.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous, Fun, and Original!.......1999-08-29

A friend of mine recently turned me on to this band, and I am so very happy he did. The sound is very original and upbeat, and each track is different enough from the others that it shows what marvellous diversity and talent these guys have. I mean, "La llanta se me poncho" is as close to traditional latin music as you can get, with a bit of their cajun sound mixed in, while "your love terrifies me" and "captured" are much more straight forward rock/cajun/blues. My favorite song is "La guera felix". As one of the other reviewers said, it's a party in a box, or on a disc!

5 out of 5 stars Their best since "Nuevo Boogaloo." Don't miss this one!.......1999-08-04

Their always infectious melodies and hip-swinging rhythyms continue on with this CD, their latest. Anyone who likes music with a twist of something a little different will enjoy "Sugar Town" immensely.

4 out of 5 stars great blues / rock cd.......2004-06-15

I bought MICHAEL LEE FIRKINS first solo CD and was very impressed. I ordered this CD when I found out he played in this band. As FIRKINS is a metal guitar player ( SATRIANI / HOEY etc. ), this foray into BLUES might well have been a failure, but alas the opposite is true. While being a somewhat progressive BLUES CD, their are many tradional elements as well. The harmonica of LITTLE JOHN CHRISLEY is traditional for the most part and his vocals are more than adequate for the BLUES. FIRKINS shines on guitar and keeps the energy level high while playing some inspiring guitar. The songs grow on you after a period of familiarisation. GREAT BLUES / GREAT GUITAR / GREAT HARMONICA. If that sounds like you, don't hesitate.

    Product Description

Reviewed in The Washington Post by Richard Harrington, Wednesday, February 2, 2005 "That two conjoined 18th-century barns could prove so hospitable to so much fine music won't surprise anyone who's ever visited them at Wolf Trap. In fact, 17 acts have recorded live albums at the Barns since they opened in 1981 as the smaller, year-round adjunct of Wolf Trap, and a handful of compilations have also come out of assorted folk-focused programs. This new CD gathers one track from each of 16 artists, about half of them local, and captures the venue's populist appeal, nowhere more raucously than in the opening track, "Rock This House," a Jimmy Rogers blues classic delivered with typical bravado by the Nighthawks. The Barns' juke joint feel is brought home in similarly energized performances by the Deanna Bogart Band, the Grandsons and the aptly named Roomful of Blues, who romp through the T-Bone Walker instrumental, "Two Bones and a Pick." Beausoleil's "Perky Dance Two-Step" and the Iguanas' sinewy "Para Donde Vas" exemplify why the Barns also doubles so effectively as a dance hall. On the other hand, its superb acoustics are well suited to the subtler singer-songwriter offerings of Nils Lofgren (the airy, hopeful "Some Must Dream"), John McCutcheon and Chris Smither. Among the previously unreleased tracks: Tom Paxton's gentle evocation of the '60s folk boom, "Did You Hear John Hurt?," with harmonies from Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer, whose wry and mirthful "Daughters of Feminists" is a highlight. So is Eddie From Ohio's "Great Day," a rousing a cappella gospel quartet built around Julie Murphy Wells's sterling lead and underscored by clapping hands and tapping feet."
