4 out of 5 stars The Fixx - Decent Compilation.......2007-03-05

The Fixx are one of those bands that I never went out and bought any of their studio albums, but I always liked what I heard from them. I saw them open for The Moody Blues once and thought they put on a very good live show. This compilation is a decent overview of their career. It gets some criticism for including a live version of "Stand Or Fall" instead of the studio version and an alternate version of "Red Skies At Night". Personally I like both of the versions included here, but it is probably a disappointment for people who are looking for a true studio compilation. Slightly different versions of "Deeper And Deeper" as well as "Built For The Future" are also included here. The Fixx were kings of top 40 radio for about four years and then were dropped like a hot potato. I always thought they were a step above the average new wave bands of the day and this collection shows that they were a capable band who wrote catchy stuff. I always found it interesting that although they were a top 40 singles band, most of their lyrics were not your typical radio friendly stuff. You won't find any relationship related songs here, but more topical material dealing with world events and issues. That is one thing I always liked about The Fixx is because of this they did not really fit any mold. If you are looking for a decent overview of the band, this one is worth picking up. The Fixx still tour from time to time and have released several albums since their hey day.

5 out of 5 stars a must-have for eighties enjoyment.......2007-02-11

all the great Fixx songs...i only wish Stand or Fall was the studio version instead of a live version. otherwise this cd fully satisfies.

4 out of 5 stars Red Skies is NOT live on this album..........2006-06-03

Just to correct those that have said that "Red Skies" is live on this collection -- it's not. It is different from the original found on Shuttered Room; this one is a remix -- produced by Genesis and The Police collaborater Hugh Padgham. If you're like me, and only began to appreciate The Fixx after their heydays, you might actually like the newer version of "Red Skies" better than the album original. It's a bit tighter, more up tempo.

Purists will hate it, along with the live version of "Stand or Fall". Those longing for the true sound of The Fixx, the way they heard them back in the early 80's, I'd recommend the more recent "Ultimate" release.

4 out of 5 stars Get Your Fixx!! .......2005-05-04

I can honestly say I'd only heard the one "Big hit" song of The Fixx for many years "One Thing Leads to Another". A few years ago a new 80's station started on the radio here. I heard the songs "Red Skies (at night)" "Saved By Zero"(favorite song by them)"Stand or Fall" and "Secret Separation". Had no idea The Fixx did these songs. Pleasantly suprised by this I went out and bought this album.
While I believe the CD to be a great compilation of The Fixx's best work I'd agree with every reviewer before me in that the live versions of "Red Skies" and "Stand or Fall" weaken the CD. The original recordings are much better. The other songs however have great sound quality and are well worth the price. If your a big Fixx fan I suggest you buy this album. Also might want to pick up the album "Shuttered Room" to get the original recordings of "Red Skies" and "Stand or Fall"

3 out of 5 stars Not a good Fixx...........2005-01-10

Warning shot....the versions of "Stand Or Fall" and "Red Skies" are inferior live versions. This collection also does not include any tracks from albums after "Walkabout."

The "Ultimate Collection" has the studio versions from "Shuttered Room" and songs from 3 more albums, and is the better buy.

5 out of 5 stars Spann and Green - Match made in Blues Heaven.......2006-10-17

I love Otis Spann. Both his solo work and as a member of Muddy Water's band. This album sees Spann hooking up with the original Fleetwood Mac line up san their drummer (what was his name?). Otis' piano nicely compliments Peter Green's guitar, which is a little more restrained then usual on this album. This album features some great rockin' tunes and as well as some excellent slow blues like 'Ain't Nobody's Business'. Don't be put off by the strange album cover. This is a great, great blue album.

3 out of 5 stars Not The Best Otis Spann CD.......2003-11-12

I have about all of Otis Spann's CD's that are available. I did not care for this CD that much. The sound of his great piano playing was washed out and upstaged by the noisy guitars. Also, he departed from his traditional Chicago Blues CD and went with a more fast paced rock and roll type sound. I would recommend Otis Spann's Best Of Vanguard Years instead.

5 out of 5 stars Forget Scorcese...THIS is BLUES.......2003-10-05

Clapton, Hendrix, Beck, Page all have reputations as great blues, blues/rock guitarists. Peter Green was THE best. Just listen to this album.

It starts with "My Love Depends On You" with the Chicago Blues piano virtuoso Otis Spann singing his heart out and playing an inspired piano accompaniment. I always thought Otis sounded at least 30 years older than he was. He was a Pisces and that ethereal quality associated with the sign of the fish comes through his I've-see-it-all voice and fluid piano playing. Who better to complement the great underappreciated bluesman, than the great underappreciated Green God? Unlike the typical guitar "gods", Green played only the notes necessary, he didn't overpower the other musicians and certainly never does so with Otis' voice. Green is a Scorpio many times over with an expansive dose of Sag that allows him to reach deep down and express emotion with soaring openness. Never was this more evident than on this track! This is simply one of the most moving performances you'll ever hear.

"Walking" is a more exuberant, up-tempo number that still retains Otis' plaintive soulfulness. Great, unusual drumming from Otis' friend S. P. Leary!

"Ain't Nobody's Business" features some of Green's softest and most tender guitar playing ever. His playing on this track is like an intense, yet gentle carress. This is NOT background music!

Those are my favorite tracks, but there isn't a truly weak track on the entire cd. The empathy between the two water-sign greats is evident throughout, especially when Otis implores Peter to "Play me the blues now, baby!" and Peter does just that on "My Love Depends On You". Otis became a fan of Peter's, struck by the guitarist's depth of feeling, intensity and tenderness.

One surprise is that "Hungry Country Girl" a mini hit for Otis recorded at this same session wasn't included in this reissue. If you get this cd, seek out this song as well. I'll never forget hearing it on a 1000 watt all-black radio station that could only be heard on the south side of Chicago and Gary, Indiana, played by Pervis Spann (no relation to Otis). Pervis Spann was a legendary DJ who called himself "Pervis Spann, your all day, all night blues man!"

This album is absolutely the best example of the blues fathers meeting the sons. Hooker 'N Heat is my #2. I hope you enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars A Spann and Green great.......2001-03-01

As admirer of Otis Spann and Peter Green, to find this album was such a pleasure. Spann is his usual constant, but Peter Green show how good a blues guitarist he was. He plays with such simplicity but has so much feeling in what is played. Green can play one note and have so much more effect that some modern guitairists who try to play at the speed of light.

5 out of 5 stars Great Swedish Group.......2007-06-13

The Sahara Hotnights are back with a must better album than previously and confirm all expectations. While they have chosen a much more polished approach than compared to their previous efforts, they have lost none of their rocking punh. Indeed the album is much better produced than even the last album. First song Visit to Vienna is simply splendid. This is a typical pop-rock song with distinct 60's feel as well as a rumbling bass. The girl choruses are great. then the single cheek to cheek is really neat as well. While the album has lost some of the punky touch that made them great, it is certainly not less great than previously. It sounds like the work of a more professional group overall but which is still inspired. Their playing has really improved and they rea one of the best rock bands at the moment. Compered to previous efforts it has a slightly more pronounced feminine touch which is not bad at all despite the fact that the SH are one of the few female bands that does not fall prey to the cliches of the genre. I had to order mine directly from Bengan's in Gotheburg since the imports on Amazon. com or . co.uk were really expensive. Anyway it came very fast from that source as usual (plus it is from Sweden itself!) Also, the girls lok really great on the cover, so who can want anything more?

5 out of 5 stars Growing up can be good!.......2007-05-26

Sahara Hotnights have always been a very good mature rock band musically. They never tried to be too pop or too rock just somewhere in between. With this new album they have seemed to mature even further while staying true to their sound. You can definitely hear influences strongly in their music but they still maintain a sound all their own. "Cheek to Cheek" is the first radio single and it is different for the band as it goes into more straight "pop" territory but in the end it is quite catchy and very retro 80's almost some kind of hidden ode to Siouxe and the Banshees. If anyone likes anything by this band then this album is another welcomed release. Sahara Hotnights will never be a top 40 band in the US but thank God they don't adhere to what is what in US music these days and stick to what they know and are.

5 out of 5 stars HOMAGE.......2005-07-10

Guitar great Stevie Ray Vaughan was known for covering Jimi Hendrix's "Wind Cries Mary" in concert (I saw him play it live and bring the house down in Austin, Texas in the early 80's). So how fitting is it that Mayer covers BOTH Vaughan and Vaughan's famous cover-both LIVE? Nice Touch!

In his two originals, Mayer doesn't always escape his musical provenance (Dave Matthews, James Taylor, et.al), but along with similar artist Daniel Cartier (whose "Wide Outside" is a definate MUST for sensitive acoustic men lovers), will establish a unique indentity in about 6 years.

Can't Wait!

4 out of 5 stars John Mayer-A breath of fresh air.......2004-04-11

I have been a fan of John for a long time. I have seen him live twice. Once with the album tour of Room for squares, and for Heavier things. I must say that each time is a new experience. He brings his own style to the table. With the song Lenny-(Stevie Ray Vaughan)even with that he puts things in there that stevie didn't. Stevie is one of my guitar heroes. Along with Eric Clapton. But this album shows his talents with out any major production. This is just John playin his acoustic. Of course with the Lenny and Wind Cries marry. This is an album that you can listen to over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Live talent showcased!.......2002-11-15

Some of the older fans of John Mayer know where his true talent lies. Hearing John Mayer in concert is incomparable. While his CDs are fun and filled with insightful lyrics and wonderfully produced music, they can't compare to seeing John Mayer live. This CD offers a glimpse of the talent that John Mayer has to offer. While it is a single released in Australia, promoting his song No Such Thing, the CD is a gem because it contains two of his live performances. On this CD you'll find John's amazing guitar talent. Granted, you can download many, many live shows on the internet but if you just want a glimpse of it, get this CD. You won't find the real experience of being at a John Mayer show with this short CD, but you will understand why he's hyped as talented. (It's not just hype.) A John Mayer show is entertainment in every way--- filled with John chatting at the audience and amazing solos--- but this will help out the fan who can see that John's limited by a produced CD.

Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2002-09-04

This album is one of the best ones that I've heard in a long time. I'm really into the acoustic rock, and this music is some of the best acoustic rock I've heard aside from Dave Matthews. I highly recommend this album to anyone who like to listen to the acoustic guitar.

3 out of 5 stars Catchy Song.......2002-05-21

this Song's Lyrics caught my attention.I Liked the Energy He has on this Song.the only reason why it doesn't fully move me is because He sounds like a Cross between Blues Travler&Dave Matthews&that Vocal Vibe doesn't fully move me.but John Mayer is a Decent Writer&Something about this song works for me.I think He might turn out to be a decent Song-writer in the long run.time will tell.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars No big hits but a high quality album.......2003-05-31

This album marked the end of an era, being the last album that Olivia recorded before she changed her musical style completely. Perhaps her decision to change style was helped by the absence of hits from this album. There are only two famous covers here and they certainly provide a contrast, one being the Johnny Cash classic Ring of fire and the other being Don't cry for me Argentina - a song that was originally a UK number one hit for Julie Covington and was a nineties hit for Madonna, but is most closely linked with Elaine Paige, the singer actress who originally starred in the stage production of Evita in London's West end.

Elsewhere on this album, there is a song written by Olivia (Don't ask a friend) and a cover of If love is real (Randy Edelman) and several other interesting songs, mainly ballads.

If you are already familiar with some of Olivia's music pre-Grease, you will find this to be similar in style - if not, you should try a compilation of her early music or some of her other original albums from the period. Nevertheless, this is a fine album in its own way and anybody who is a committed fan of Olivia's early music needs this album.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful songs sung by a beautiful voice-perfect.......2003-05-27

The songs on this album are perfect for olivia's angelic voice. So many times, you see artists not living up to their full potential because of their poor choices in style of music, but Olivia is the absolute queen of ballads and this album is a perfect example of that. Yes, it is a slow, rather melancholy album and probably should not be the first livvy cd you buy because it makes her singing look more one dimensional than it actually is, but for any livvy fan who was first drawn to her beautiful voice, this is a must have. Slow Dancin' is the best version of that song I have ever heard and though there might be a few too many covers of other artists' songs considering she was already an established star and probably should have been doing more original work, this woman probably does the best job of any artist I have ever seen of covering other artists. This is a romantic album from start to finish. The title song is not my favorite, but is certainly a song anyone who has ever been in a relationship can relate to. Slow dancin makes me well want to slow dance with that special someone. As previously mentioned, that song is better than the original. Ring Of Fire is slightly out of place as it has an up-tempo country beat wedged in between songs that are soft rock, but it's a good interpretation. Don't Cry For Me Argentina will make you cry, it is such a beautiful rendition. Sad Songs is a great song, probably the best on the album, the epitome of soft rock in the 70's. You won't see me cry is another classic cover. So easy to begin is another one that all of us can relate to about the dynamics of a relationship and has that classic, breathy olivia sound. Olivia goes back to her country roots with I think I'll say goodbye. Don't ask a friend was written by olivia and shows her growing maturity at this time. It is a very interesting song, unlike anything I have ever heard before, but an excellent early composition by her. If Love Is Real is just beautiful. It sounds like it was written for Olivia and I can't imagine any other artist singing it. It is just perfect for her voice. I can't say enough about that song. I just love it. So yes, the whole album is ballads which would be a valid complaint if they weren't all sung by Olivia who is at top form with ballads and can make you feel a love song in your soul like no one else can. This is a beautiful album. Don't make it your intro to Olivia, but definitely get it if you know her stuff relatively well.

4 out of 5 stars Making a good career slightly worse, but still a great album.......2003-04-08

When most Olivia Newton-John fans are asked about this album, their response in unanimous.

'Umm. The cover is really pretty'.

And indeed it is. In fact it's probably not out of order to say that 'Making A Good Thing Better', Olivia's 9th studio album, boasts the nicest cover art of her career. That flowing blonde hair and so-seventies-it-hurts fringe with the flick around her shoulders, the cute-but-flirty flower tucked behind her left ear, the piercing blue eyes, and of course those freakishly white teeth - it doesn't take a genius to work out why John Travolta said that in the seventies every man on the planet was in love with her. Critics as well as fans noted this, Robin Smith in his review of the LP for Record Mirror said 'the pictures on the cover are almost worth the price of the album alone!' Unfortunately, focusing on the cover art doesn't give this album the dues it deserves.

I, like most of Olivia's fans it would seem going from the reviews listed below, initally wasn't too impressed with the album. It is quite slow, and compared to the burning eclecticism of her next album ('Totally Hot'), certainly has more of a 'mellow' effect on the listener. That's not to discount its merit though, because on closer inspection the album is probably a lot closer to 'Totally Hot' than you'd first think. Comprised mostly of pop ballads and silky mid-tempos, 'Making A Good Thing Better' epitomises the gorgeous American feel of the late seventies. Although the effect of the growing disco phase hadn't fully registered with Olivia yet, at least half of this record is exactly what most seventies disco divas were putting out as their B-sides, or songs Studio 54 was playing for the 'slow dance' sections of their evening fiascos.

The album builds on and succeeds in reaching the sound that her last record, 'Don't Stop Believin'', was aiming for but never quite achieved: a dreamy, often ethereal sound which compliments Olivia's singing style perfectly. Her voice is divine with, for the most part, her own multi-tracked backing vocals - sublime! The title track as Robin Smith put it is 'an average song turned into a specialty, her voice sounding like twelve vestal virgins'. The final track in the Grand Mellow Trio (the other two being 'Have You Never Been Mellow' and 'Don't Stop Believin''), except slightly more aggressive with a pop / gospel feel going on. Definitely one of her most underrated singles, just piercing the US and Australian Top 100. One can't help but feel that the gorgeous 'Slow Dancing' was the intentional pre-cursor to 'Totally Hot's 'Dancin' 'Round And 'Round', whilst 'Coolin' Down' as one US rock review said uses the 'tearful quality in her voice' to best effect.

These three gems come spliced between two songs which create a rather jarring effect on the first 'side' (yes, I still love the old LP!) of this record. Her cover of 'Ring Of Fire' was not the best choice of song to record - in fact, next to 'I'll Bet You A Kangaroo', it's probably one of the worst songs of her early career - and 'Don't Cry For Me Argentina' is spine-tinglingly beautiful but is distracting on the album to say the least. The second side is a much smoother ride than the first, opening with the single-that-should-have-been, 'Sad Songs'. A catchy uptempo melody, this remains one of her best tunes of the seventies. So well-received was the tune that it actually warranted a single release in Japan, whereas the poor performance of the record and the title track ended the album's chart career elsewhere. 'You Won't See Me Cry', 'So Easy To Begin', and the critically-acclaimed 'If Love Is Real' make for a fantastic selection of seventies-sounding ballads which should rate a lot higher with fans in Olivia's back category. 'I Think I'll Say Goodbye' recalls the more country-esque tunes of Olivia's earlier career, whilst 'Don't Ask A Friend' is a self-penned mid-tempo with a lot of electric guitar and some interesting lyrical ideas from Olivia ('I'm your lonely hearts club friend'). Of course the best was yet to come from Olivia in terms of songwriting, but it was great to hear her try her hand at it in this comparitively early stage of her career.

This album has got a lashing from both fans and the record-buying public at the time it seems, charting at the rather dismal #34 in the US and becoming her first US album not to go gold. One can only speculate, but there is no doubt in my mind that over-exposure played a defining role. In the space of two years she released three studio albums as well as a 'Greatest Hits' record. 'Excessive' is probably too kind a word!! Add to the fact that as wonderful as this record is, it's not the cutting-edge sound Olivia needed. Her career had been stable, for want of a better word, for the past three years, and she needed 'Grease' and its subsequent 'sex-up' to progress to a new, more exciting period of her career.

'Making A Good Thing Better' remains a joy from start to finish, minus a couple of temporary aberrations which make it slightly less cohesive than it should have been. In essence, it's not far away from 'Dancin 'Round And 'Round' or the 'Boats Against The Current' on her next record, and my only concern for the album is the fact that so many people don't seem willing to give it a chance.

5 out of 5 stars love olivia.......2003-01-29

If you would listen to the words of the songs, you just might understand Olivia. She has been through alot in her lifetime. So just sit back and listen to the messages in the songs. She is the greatest singer of all time!Making a good thing better is one of the best!ENJOY!

4 out of 5 stars A good thing but not the best.......2003-01-06

This was probably Olivia's least successful album of the 70's considering the success before and after it. I didn't like it when I first purchased the album years ago but now I enjoy it and it isn't her worst album. SAD SONGS should have been a hit , it sounds like a 1977 hit song. RING OF FIRE and the TITLE SONG are also good songs but certainly not her best work of the 70's. It's a good thing GREASE came along or her career may have taken a nose-dive after this album. It's still worth buying if you're a die hard OLIVIA fan. Others may be disappointed.

          5 out of 5 stars Love JLO.......2007-05-16

There are no words I have orded alot of JLO'S CD's from you all thank you

4 out of 5 stars don't say it is so much bad..........2004-12-21

I know it's a commercial well known singer and a well known actress but this song is good, really good, she's got a voice, oh yes she's got a voice!
It has got medium lyrics, but the sample and the style are great.
It's my opinion, I'm not a lover of r&b/pop but I make an exception for her because she has got all the things to become a appreciate singer, isn't it?
She's got a good voice, a good style, good featurings in her carreer (Nas, The Lox, Fat Joe, Big Pun, LL Cool J, P.Diddy, Ja Rule, R.Kelly ...), and a perfect physical apparence!

5 out of 5 stars review content not price.......2002-10-18

my observations of reviews of imports find that many critique the price of imports and not the content. hello? a cd is classified as an import if it was manufactured overseas for an overseas market, not a US market. therefore anything "imported" is always going to cost more including cd's. so please stop complaining about the price of imports! this cd was made to promote the forthcoming cd, "J.Lo" which had not been released yet. you receive not only the album cut, you get a remix, and a couple of bonuses: a remix medley of top songs from her prior album and the music video of the song which qualifies this cd as "enhanced" and allow me to watch in its entirety and at my discretion without having wait for it on MTV . this cd does what it was designed to do which is effectively promote a very much anticipated cd to Jennifer Lopez's fan base much better than a 45 could ever do and thus earn its 5 star rating from me.
