I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

I have all Rickey Medlocke stuff because I'm a fan for life. This is not Blackfoot,but it is very good Southern boy rock. If you are a Medlocke fan, I strongly suggest you get a copy of this while you can.

There never be another Strikes album, but I've always been a fan of Blackfoot and I'm a fan of this album. There's a maturity here, perhaps a mellowing or taming of the wildman (Medlocke) and songs such as Rainbow and It's all over now show depth. If you've aged right along with him, you'll appreciate the album.

When Blackfoot released the previous album, called "Medicine man" in 1990, they had been silent for many years, and the only remaining original member was singer/guitarist Rick Medlocke. After another four years, Blackfoot's "After the reign" came out and still Medlocke was the only original member.

"After the reign" can be described as a (modern) southern rock effort, but not of the same quality shown on albums like "Strikes", "Marauder" or "Siogo". The production is good but rather slick and the material is alright but not that thrilling I was hoping for. I would say that it's an overall good album, better than both "Tomcattin" and "Vertical smiles", but not quite as good as the previous "Medicine man" - an album with better songs.

Rick Medlocke have joined Lynyrd Skynyrd as you probably know, and maybe "After the reign" is not only the latest but the last Blackfoot album ever. That would indeed be a pity, but if Blackfoot decide to make a come back I sure hope it will be the original line up...

Blackfoot went out with a bang on AFTER THE REIGN. This wasn't another FLYIN' HIGH, STRIKES, TOMCATTIN', or MARAUDER, and yes, it has more cover versions than it should, but it still contains some good originals, especially "It's All Over Now", which could be about saying goodbye to people you were once good friends with, but with whom you now have little or nothing in common. An excellent way to end a career- or is it really the end?

The man is BACK!. Ricky I missed ya, you don't know what a relief it was to hear new Southern rock again. Coming from a band that was original Southern Rock's last band to make any good music. Classis like Fly Away, Train Train, and Highway Song are a essential listen. Mr. Medlocke returns to crack out more rockers and ballads with a few cover songs thrown in. A bit past his prime, Blackfoot is releasing much better S. rock now than any other Southern has-been outfit. Man, it;s good to hear new Blackfoot, fans of old won't be let down.

This excellent CD of High Holy Days liturgical music is, according to its own liner notes, "somewhat concertized," the goal being to "reflect the profound spiritual journey that takes place in the life of Jews throughout the world during this holy period, and to open this experience, at least on an artistic level, to lovers of music, beauty, and holiness." It should therefore be listened to as if it were a classical concert, rather than actual worship. (This is not a new idea among Jews; in the days before "equal opportunity employment," when Jews were barred from European opera companies, it was not unusual for a gifted cantor to go on tour in the Jewish world, giving concerts of original liturgical music, performed on "secular" days. Such concerts, in turn, gave birth to music which eventually found its way into the regular synagogue services -- as did much of this music.)


The pieces included here come mostly from the Western European (Ashkenazic) tradition, and will be familiar to most Ashkenazic Jews. Much of this music originated in the German Reform movement of the 19th century which, in turn, was strongly influenced by the classical composers. The prominent use of a pipe organ in this concert places it squarely in the "classical Reform" category, i.e., the most "churchlike" of Jewish liturgies. However, I have heard the same tunes sung in synagogues of other denominations, too -- including Orthodox groups that would be absolutely mortified to discover that their "traditional" music is originally Reform! Consider the oh-so-traditional "Kol Nidre" by Louis Lewandowski (included on this CD), who was a Reform composer. It is indeed a tribute to the beauty of this music that it speaks to all kinds of Jews.


The concert itself is beautifully performed, with Stacy Lowe as soprano, Russell Ashley as baritone, Mary Jane Newman as organist and choral director, and Lisa Rautenberg on violin. The CD comes with liner notes by Mary Jane Newman, giving a brief history of Jewish music and some background on the the various composers.

    Zino Vinnikov Plays Fritz Kreisler is a breathtaking recording of some of the Viennese master's absolute gems, played by one of the most accomplished violinists I have ever heard.

    Zino Vinnikov has the rare capacity to ally delightful technical mastery with depth and subtlety of interpretation. It is, however, above all his exquisite tone and stunning phrasing that makes this CD stand out from all other recordings of Kreisler pieces (and, believe me, I own a few!). Sergey Maltsev provides a brilliantly equilibrated accompaniment on the piano.

    Vinnikov is indeed, as his label puts it, 'The Best-Kept Secret in the Classical Music Industry'. It is nothing short of amazing (or dare I say scandalous?) that music lovers have been denied this revelation for so long.

    I could not recommend this one more strongly - this is THE definitive Kreisler recording to own.
