5 out of 5 stars 5 STARS AND THEN SOME !!.......2006-02-10

Oh Julie, the songs you sang on this CD are superb. I wish you could still give us that joy. If you can only sing in the low registers, give us jazz!! You can do it I just know you can!!

2 out of 5 stars Pretty Sad, .......2005-10-27

Hollywood veteran Julie Andrews has had a glorious career, but not without its downsides. Her legend is built on "The Sound of Music" and "Mary Poppins" and other glorious roles. Her abilities as a singer were never impressive or great, her voice often sounded weak, but she always knew how to sing around her very limited vocal range. On this collection she performs some of the greatest Broadway tunes ever written and even though she does a good job, her voice just doesn't hold up against many of these tunes. Her warmth is felt all over the album, in "Here I'll Stay" she wraps her gentle, but narrow, voice around it and in "My Funny Valentine" she sticks to the lower register of her voice. However, in the re-recording of her classic "Sound of Music" and in "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever" her voice fails her, it often sounds thin and airy and it's actually quite sad to listen to. When all is said and done Julie Andrews remains a great talent, and most of that talent is largely due to her amazing capability as a performer and her genuine warmth.

5 out of 5 stars I FELL IN LOVE WITH JULIE ALL OVER AGAIN.......2005-06-25

As a young kid growing up in the Philippines I remember my Dad playing his state-of-the-art Aiwa tape recorder back in the 60s and hearing Julie Andrews' voice - truly the voice of an angel! Now, hearing these songs again with adult ears I fell in love with her voice all over again !

5 out of 5 stars A Great Julie Andrews CD.......2002-01-27

If you are a fan of Dame Julie's and musicals, this is the cd for you. It is a compilation of songs from prevously released albums; The King and I, The Music of Richard Rodgers, Here I'll Stay, and Victor/Victoria, Original Broadway Cast Recording.
I found the material to be very well put together giving the listener selections from My Fair Lady, Camelot, The Sound of Music, Victor/Victoria and others. What more could you want?
As for Ms. Andrews, she is superb. There is simply no one like her. I have heard comments that prior to the infamous throat surgery she was unable to handle the difficult material and hit those high notes. This is just not true. All you have to do is listen to these songs recorded in the early 90's to know that she still had a marvelous voice. Lets hope that one day she will be able to sing and record again. If not, these may be her last recordings so treasure them.

The My Fair Lady suite is wonderful and Ms. Andrews definitely hit the high note at the end of "I Could Have Danced All Night".
Her version of "Edelweiss" and "The Sound of Music" are lovely.
Also worth listening to is "Living in the Shadows" written for the Broadway production of Victor/Victoria so you won't find it on the movie soundtrack. The lyrics are by Leslie Bricusse who also penned "Crazy World", which is another great selection on this cd.

Overall this is a cd worth having in your collection, so buy it today. Otherwise you are missing out.

5 out of 5 stars Climbing Every Mountain with Mary Poppins.......2002-01-22

Julie Andrews and her music have been an inspiration to me
every since I stepped into a theater and watched Mary Poppins
(many years ago). I admire her talent and her voice on this CD. I know it is not as clear a voice as she used to have but I still enjoy listening to her. I listen to this CD when I want a "pick me up" and am proud to have it as part of my collection.

5 out of 5 stars A Musical Treat.......2006-01-08

"The true mission of the violin is to imitate the accents of the human voice, a noble mission that has earned for the violin the glory of being called the king of instruments." ~ Charles-Auguste De Bériot ~

Yehudi Menuhin and Stéphane Grapelli together had made some of the most beautiful music ever-recorded. And I believe that this is one of the many successful albums they recorded together. In this recording, both violinists have showed their excellent musicianship and interpretative eloquence as well, making it one of my most cherished CDs from my collection.

These are the main ingredients of a perfectly-made CD for your listening pleasure: mix violins, piano, bass and drums together, combine two terrific violinists, season with the best melodies in the 20s, 30s and 40s from Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter and Rodgers & Hart. Add the musical talents of Nelson Riddle, Max Harris, Martin Taylor, Eddie Tripp, Alan Clare and the rest of the studio musicians. Now all you have to do is to sit back, relax and savor these stunning melodies coming from your CD player. Listen to it in full-volume and fill your music room with the sheer beauty of these classics.

One of my favorite musical instruments is violin. With its four strings, it gives a whole wide range of musical versatility and I simply love the fascinating sound it produces.

My personal highlights are the best tunes from Jerome Kern - "The Way You Look Tonight" (Nelson Riddle arranged this particular track and conducted the Woodwind and Brass section), "A Fine Romance," "Pick Yourself Up," "Why Do I Love You?" and "All The Things You Are."

My choices from Irving Berlin's gems are - "Isn't It A Lovely Day?" featuring the great artistry of Nelson Riddle in arranging and conducting, "Cheek To Cheek" and "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm."

The Cole Porter repertoire represented his musical sophistication in "Night And Day," "I Get A Kick Out Of You" and "Just One Of Those Things."

The choice cuts from the talented and creative team of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart are "My Funny Valentine" and "Thou Swell."

Listening to this CD is so delectable and equivalent to having my favorite dessert - be it Tiramisu, New York Cheesecake, Black Forest Cake, Chocolate Soufflé, Créme Brulee, Chocolate Mousse or Chocolate-Coated Strawberries! ;)

A musical treat.

    4 out of 5 stars Great compilation.......2002-05-10

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

    1 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2001-12-15

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

If you think that musicals are only outsize, outlandish spectacles hatched on Broadway, The It Girl deftly shows that there are other options. This small show was created in 2001 at the York Theater--located in a church's basement, it's as close as you get to a barn in New York City. Loosely based on the 1927 Clara Bow vehicle It, the show gleefully runs through all the 1920s classic situations and characters: chases, flappers, mistaken identities, a boat cruise, a department-store heir, and fake French accents—it's all there. You can almost hear the ghost of P.G. Wodehouse, librettist for the Gershwins' Jazz Age classics, cheering. The It Girl breezes through thanks to its cast's game can-do energy and the strength of Paul McKibbins and B.T. McNicholl's perky tunes, which deploy nice melodic resources and make the most of a six-piece band. There's enough knowing pastiche here to keep the saccharine at bay, but the creative team also shows genuine resource and love for musicals as a genre. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars Can't Get Enough of "It".......2006-02-11

I took my daughter to see a production of this at a theatre in Hopewell where I sometime perform. We really enjoyed the show, and my daughter asked me to buy her a copy if the CD. I can't stop listening to this show. Great score...great orchestrations and great performances. I'm going to buy myself a copy too.

5 out of 5 stars This musical has IT!.......2005-04-14

Maybe I'm biased, because I'm friends with the composer... but I was not when I first saw this musical, and I fell in love with it. A truly toe-tapping score, and adorably witty lyrics. It's a charming gem of a show, and I recommend it to any music lover.

The characters are fun, the story is marvelously scandalous (in a family oriented way), and the performances are top-drawer!

    5 out of 5 stars Terrific!.......2003-05-18

Like another reviewer, was lucky enough to see this show at the York Theatre in Manhattan. A wonderful musical score and clever lyrics made this show an absolute delight. A must-have CD.

5 out of 5 stars This show is "How Do You Say...?" (Ah, yes) AMAZINGLY GREAT!.......2003-03-17

This show has a STELLAR cast! The cast is relatively small, only consisting of three men and four women. The music is original and REALLY clever (and based in the 1920s...GREAT TIME)! I listen to this cast album MORE than any other (and I have A LOT of cast albums)! Some of the MOST appealing tracks are "A Perfect Plan," "Coney Island" and "Step Into Their Shoes"! This would be A GREAT show for small theatres or small companies of actors! You'll be glad you bought this cast album after you take the time to listen to it all the way through at least once. You'll find a few songs you like and listen to those OVER and OVER. Two weeks later you'll find a few more songs you like and do the same! ... This is an A+ show!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful show with great music and lyrics.......2002-10-05

My family loved this show. Our eight year old son kept singing the songs and humming the tunes. He even wanted to listen to it at bedtime. Very catchy lyrics with tunes that keep your feet tapping. The show is full of songs that continually creep into your mind during the day. I often found myself humming a tune or two over and over. Highly recommend.

Rodgers and Hart's Babes in Arms is the archetypal "let's put on a show in a barn!" musical. When Encores! decided to revive it, they picked a mostly unknown cast to match the characters' young age. Happily, the gamble paid off, especially considering the astonishing number of showstopping songs that pepper the ditzy book. Erin Dilly and Australian cabaret star David Campbell play the lead ingenues, and Dilly does well enough by "My Funny Valentine" and "The Lady Is a Tramp." But Melissa Rain Anderson steals the show with brassy renditions of "Way Out West" and "Johnny One-Note." A 1989 recording of the musical may have stronger performances overall (Judy Blazer has brass and sass!), but more Rodgers and Hart is always better. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

1 out of 5 stars Decide for yourself.......2006-08-19

The above reviews make many interesting, informative, and valid points. No one could be blamed for rushing out to buy the CD on the basis of such glowing reviews. I'd just like to say to do yourself a favor and LISTEN TO THE SAMPLES before making a decision. If you do, my hunch is that you'll never buy it. Reasonable people can disagree, but how anyone could recommend this performance, or even be willing to listen to it for a second time, is beyond me. Personally, I think it's terrible. Yes, it has its good points, but I am most interested in the music, and in the quality of the singing, and the latter is painful to listen to. They are not singers. They are not performers. True, and this is probably where we differ, they sound like you would expect their characters to sound in real life, but I go for the music, not the dramatic effect. Ideally, both should be present, but if that's not possible, save and protect the music.

4 out of 5 stars Encores Concert cast performs with youthful exuberance.......2005-02-20

I confess a (very) slight preference for the New World Cd which has a bit more polish and a bit more pizzazz. Still, this version from Encores is quite enjoyable and offers a truly youthful sounding cast.

It's a shame that the book of BABES IN ARMS is such a mess and it has defied repeated attempts to revise and revive it. The songs are good but they are not exactly glued to the plot which may explain why they work so well out-of-context.

The songs remain evergreen classics, though of limited relevance to today's listeners.

DRG now has three Rodgers & Hart shows in their catalogue, all courtesy of Encores: PAL JOEY, BOYS FROM SYRACUSE and now BABES IN ARMS. It's a shame the concert of CONNECTICUT YANKEE was not preserved as well.

It's fantastic to have all the songs in their original order and arrangements. On the other hand, this disc contains, let's face it, the worst version of "The Lady Is a Tramp" on record.

5 out of 5 stars Rodgers and Hart's sparkling masterpiece.......2002-09-19

BABES IN ARMS is given the 5-star treatment in this recording of the 1999 City Center's Encores! production. The renowned Coffee Club Orchestra under the baton of wunderkind Rob Fisher gives the sparkling score all the brilliance it deserves.

David Campbell and Erin Dilly star as the teenage sweethearts Val LeMar and Billie Smith. They offer a particularly thrilling rendition of "Where or When", and Dilly makes magic with her haunting version of "My Funny Valentine".

Melissa Rain Anderson, as the vivacious Baby Rose, performs "Johnny One-Note" to perfection, as well as stellar readings of "Way Out West" and "Imagine" with the quartet.

The Coffee Club Orchestra will thrill you with the "Johnny One-Note" and "Peter's Journey" ballet segments. The cast also features Christopher Fitzgerald and Jessica Stone. DRG Theater.

5 out of 5 stars A "MUST HAVE" for any Musical Fan.......2002-07-28

Excellent in all regards, this CD is definitley on my short list of all time favs. Uniformly well performed but Erin Dilly and Melissa Rain Anderson truly shine. Try listening to "Johnny One Note" without your pulse quickening. And the "Jonny One Note Ballet" positively rocks thanks to the brilliant work of Rob Fisher and the Coffee Club Orchestra. I am certain that Mr. Rodgers and Mr. Hart are both smiling. I know I am.

4 out of 5 stars Babes In Arms Review.......2006-11-10

It was refreshing to hear these songs in their original form. I actually could make out the lyrics to songs like Where or When and The Lady Is a Tramp.I also love Johnny One Note and Way Out West (On Western Avenue). I listen to the CD over and over and over. I would recommend it to anyone.

4 out of 5 stars Terrific Recording of a Classic.......2006-07-22

Marvelous studio recording. Wish there were more of these of long lost shows.

5 out of 5 stars Sparkling recording of Rodgers & Hart score.......2005-02-20

People who listen to this wonderful recording jump to the conclusion that the show is an overlooked classic. It isn't. The score is jam packed with standards, but the book... the book is a mess! Filled with unfunny jokes, sub-plots that go nowhere and bits of business that I doubt were even entertaining in 1937. Despite a slew of good reviews BABES had trouble attracting audiences until suddenly in teh summer it was the ONLY musical running on Broadway, and that helped it achieve a healthy run of 289 performances. But the show will never be revived except in concert.

Evans Haile is the real star hear, conducting the original orchestrations which swing in the best late 1930s tradition. The extended Ballet "Peter's Dream" is a bit repetitive but the rest of teh CD is pure gold. Really, this is the best way to enjoy BABES IN ARMS.

CORRECTION: The listing says "1989 Broadway Revival Cast" - it wasn't a revival: just a concert version.

5 out of 5 stars The Rodgers and Hart Hit Parade.......2004-02-21

The score for Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart's 1937 musical BABES IN ARMS is practically a catalog of hit songs: "Where or When," "I Wish I Were in Love Again," "My Funny Valentine," "Johnny One-Note," "The Lady Is a Tramp." Even the less popular numbers "Imagine," "All at Once," "You Are So Fair," and the title song are of fine quality (only "Way Out West" is slightly silly). The singers on this 1989 studio recording are all excellent vocalists (Judy Blazer and Judy Kaye particularly so), yet their voices are fresh and youthful-sounding enough for the juveniles -- "babes in arms" -- they are meant to be playing. But the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Evans Haile, is the real star of the recording. As the booklet notes explain, the show's original orchestrations have here been recreated, and the result is a charming sound that is authentically 1930's. As far as the orchestra is concerned, this is BABES IN ARMS as Rodgers and Hart themselves originally heard it.

    5 out of 5 stars Awsome.......2003-11-16

My brothers school put this play on recently and I just had to see it twice. I love it so much and hopefully will get the Cd soon.

Some of broadway's best singers are on this album, including Brian Stokes Mitchell, Debbie Gravitte, Marin Mazzie, and Rebecca Luker. (The cd is worth buying for Rebecca Luker's song alone!) The songs are beautifully orchestrated and sung. Most are light hearted and fun, leaving me with a good feeling when listening.
