3 out of 5 stars It's Lacking..........2006-11-15

Yes, yes, "Talking In Your Sleep" and "What I Like About You" are some of the finest pop songs ever. I agree. But what about everything else this band did?

Judging from the skimpy amount of songs this package delivers, you'd think that these blokes never managed to churn out anything more than two decent songs plus filler in between. The filler on this compilation is rather dismal compared to the primary hits.

I would've liked to have seen this disc at least TRY to approach the 80 minutes that CDs can hold. Alas, that's not the case. As such, we get two great tracks, some subpar tracks and a bad impression of the band.

A disappointing set.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT SONG.......2006-04-23

What i like about you is a great song and one of my favorite songs yet. I recommend you listen to it.

5 out of 5 stars THE GREATEST SONG.......2006-01-16

Wow! This song is amazing, What I Like About You. It is one of my favorite songs you'll most likely ever hear. Please play this
song over and over and over again.

2 out of 5 stars fidelity is lacking, not a good quality recording.......2005-09-07

I just got this in the mail today. I hate to say it, but the fidelity on this CD is, while not awful, still noticeably inferior. I have the single "What I Like About You" on a various artists' CD called "Ultimate New Wave Party 1998" (unfortunately mixed), so I bought the Romantics' Greatest Hits album to get a "clean" copy of the track. Comparing the track on the two sources, the copy on the mixed CD simply blows away the copy on the romantics CD, on the fidelity issue. It may not be too noticeable if you just have this copy, but you will notice when comparing with other CDs in your collection. Perhaps it is that the CD was issued in 1990 and is not remastered. Well, obviously there is a better fidelity version out there somewhere, so if you want decent fidelity, you might take a crack at one of the other Romantics' selections further down the page, and spend a bit more money (they may, or may not, be better).

3 out of 5 stars What I like about the Romantics........2005-08-31

This is a pretty simple collection, only 36 minutes, however the Romantics didn't really storm the charts too often. This does give you what you want though. "What I Like About You" of course is included, and kicks off the disc well. Their other hit "Talking In Your Sleep" is great, and got tons of radio time when it came out. Very catchy. Another song I had forgotten about is "One In A Million", and many might recognize that as well. The rest is good filler, the best of which is probably "Open Up Your Door". In short, this is the only Romantics disc any casual fan should ever need.

2 out of 5 stars Great artist, lousy compilation.......2003-09-27

You may have been to your music store lately, and noticed several compilations under the name "Super Hits." What are these compilations, you ask?

Budget-priced compilations, WITHOUT the budget price (though some dealers are smart enough to sell them for such a price.)

Each CD in this series has TEN tracks, no more, no less (meaning they don't even come close to filling the eighty minutes you can fit onto a single CD.) And, of course, they omit many key tracks (any other hits compilation by this artist is MUCH better.) This series is obviously a ploy by the record industry to rake in cash, by making compilations that look better than they really are.

THIS IS BY FAR THIS ARTIST'S HITS COMPILATION! Get a different one, since it will have more tracks. BUT DON'T EVEN BOTHER WITH THIS!

5 out of 5 stars if these boys dropped this lp today.............................2003-07-27

oh man, this would be a massive hit album! if you listen to it the melodies, the guitars, the influences (60's pop, surf, and ska!)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! what a album! pick this up for a good time to be had by your ears! you'll thank yourself later.

4 out of 5 stars Try the new album ..........2003-07-25

This is actually a pretty good cross-section of the Romantics' music, because it includes songs from four of the band's five albums from 1979-1985. The song selection was pretty good for this (although there are several I would have chosen over "Do Me Any Way You Wanna" and I can't believe they left out "A Night Like This"). The band has a new album due out Sept. 9 titled "61/49." If you buy this collection, you should try the new album too, because from what I've heard of it on the band's website ..., it's a more up-to-date, full sound than much of the older stuff.

4 out of 5 stars 80's Power Pop.......2000-12-17

This Detroit-based band were different from a lot of new wave groups in that they never forgot rock's roots in r&b and the blues. Anyone who grew up in the 80's will remember hearing their straight-to-the-point rock, all over the radio airwaves. Led by propulsive drumming and the no-nonsence vocals of Jimmy Marinos, they left behind a legacy of great 80's power pop. This album features, as it says, their 'Super Hits', and all have been digitally remastered which is a plus and a necessity for true fans.

3 out of 5 stars A good overview, but...........2000-02-22

This is OK, but the Romantics' true "super hits" are all found on their debut album, which completely creams any of their hits compilations. That album has the best stuff. The later songs pale in comparison.

5 out of 5 stars THE ROMANTICS ARE A GREAT BAND THAT BRINGS BACK THE TRUE SPIRIT OF ROCK N' ROLL........2007-03-28

I will be writing a review on the legendary self-titled debut album entitled "THE ROMANTICS" by one of Rock's greatest legendary bands ever and one of America's favorite sons. I give you the band from Detroit, Michigan, THE ROMANTICS. "THE ROMANTICS" was originally released in 1979 on Vinyl/LP and Cassette on the Nemperor Records label which is manufactured and distributed by CBS Records/CBS Inc. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary debut album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.

THE ROMANTICS will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for playing some simple a*s kicking Rock n' Roll thunder like that from the British Invasion in the 1960's. THE ROMANTIC'S primary musical influence is the high octane energy excitement of the late 60's Detroit Rock n' Roll and Soul scene. THE ROMANTICS music, according to their official website, like it or not, are labeled New Wave which is a term used for the more palatable selling of Punk. THE ROMANTICS were formed on Valentines Day, 1977 in Detroit, Michigan. When lead vocalist and guitarist Wally Palmar met and joined forces with drummer Jimmy Marinos, lead and rhythm guitarist Mike Skull and bassist Rich Cole, the line-up would be completed and THE ROMANTICS would be born. With that in mind, Rock n' Roll and its fans would soon witness a band that would be born to Rock and kill. THE ROMANTICS self-titled debut album "THE ROMANTICS" would be released in 1979 to highly critical acclaim rave reviews and give birth to a career that would last to this very day. In my opinion, the self-titled debut album "THE ROMANTICS" is a true testament of four extremely talented individuals and a fine fitting tribute to a great band that may have indeed, been far ahead of their time.

It is now time to let THE ROMANTICS Rock n' Roll music speak for itself and do all of the talking. This legendary album begins with the incredible 60's like Rocker "When I Look In Your Eyes," the slow and beautiful soothing 60's like Rocker Rocker "Tell It To Carrie," the breathtaking and fast speedy Rocker "First In Line," the unbelievable raw and crisp 60's like Rocker "Keep In Touch," the killer thriller Rocker "Girl Next Door," the forever ROMANTICS trademark blistering Rocker "What I Like About You," the groundbreaking 60's like Rocker "She's Got Everything," the beautiful and slow smooth Rocker "Till I See You Again," the daring and in your face 60's like Rocker "Hung On You," the 60's like merciless killer Rocker "Little White Lies" and the blasting 60's like Rocker "Gimme One More Chance." may I also add that all four band members were sizzlin' red hot and on fire during the recording of this album. Palmar's and Skill's blistering guitar riffs and licks were definitely taking their music to another level. Marinos' timing along with his drumming was perfect and exact.

Overall, this is one hell of an debut album worth seeking further into and checking out especially if you are a diehard ROMANTICS fan or a devout music collector. As for all of the newcomers and new beginners to the sound and music of THE ROMANTICS, THIS IS DEFINITELY THE ALBUM TO START WITH. I PROMISE YOU THAT YOU WILL NOT BE SORRY NOR WILL YOU EVER REGRET THAT YOU BOUGHT THIS ALBUM. You can buy this debut album through amazon.

I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary self-titled debut album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This legendary debut album will definitely prove to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. This is one great self-titled debut album that no music fan or devout music collector would want to be without.

In closing, THE ROMANTICS have continued to release new albums to highly critical acclaim and perform to sold-out audiences the world over to this very day. I guess it is safe to say that THE ROMANTICS are here to stay. According to THE ROMANTICS official website, it is clearly evident that THE ROMANTICS are still willing to contribute more Rock n' Roll for the whole world to hear despite all of the many contributions and accomplishments that the band has already made through the years. With that in mind, THE ROMANTICS have definitely left their mark in Rock n' Roll history and will never be forgotten. So here's to you Wally, Jimmy, Mike and Rich. Thanks for the great memories. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong? Thanks for reading my review and I hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. THE ROMANTICS RULES. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.

5 out of 5 stars Ya Know the Songs-This is the album- Must Have.......2006-07-06

Metaldiva is proud of these homegrown Motor City boys who did good. This is a must have for 80's afficionados, sometimes referred to as the RED album, it contains the best line up the band ever had. It was the vocals and harmonies of the drummer and bassist combined that really sold this album. This is a bit of 50's rockabilly with 60's pop combined with 80's new wave all together in a hit making combo that has boosted "What I Like About You" into the national best loved-played-at-every-game-hit that it is. "Talking In Your Sleep" was a great follow up, but no sooner did the band start to get attention, they changed the line up. "In Heat" has some of the tracks with original members, but the on-stage performances were a let down and the band clings on the edge of oblivion. Their "Strictly Personal"or "Pink Album" was confusing, and latest live offerings, extended offerings and the awful 61/49 are better left behind. Cole and Marino were the sound, and they could be like their peers, enjoying a renaissance of their own if only they could get it back together today.

Metaldiva Sez: Great addition to your collection. This was the band at it's peak, it brings back memories of shoulder pads, high heels, teased hair and boogying at Bookies in Detroit. Music was fun then and this must have album personnifies this great 80's rock band and makes you pine for Jimmy and Rich's touch today.

5 out of 5 stars A rock 'n roll treasure, it simply doesn't get any better than this!.......2006-02-21

The Romantics' 1979/80 release (self titled) is the finest powerpop release of the last 25 years. The track "what I like about you" has risen to the status of "legend" and has become one of the most played and recognizable rock 'n roll anthems of all time. "What I like" exists in the same timeless and cherished rock 'n roll universe as songs like "you really got me", "louie louie" and "wild thing". But, before you label the Romantics as one hit wonders you'll need to get your facts straight;

"What I like about you" never reached the top 40 and was never a "hit", the highest billboard chart position of the song was #49. The album itself turned in something less than a stellar performance. The HUGE success of the song in later years is a testament to its "magic" and the raw talent and brilliance of the Romantics. There are too few "happy endings" in Rock 'n Roll and these guys DESERVED the long over due success! It's an absolute shame that the Romantics are continually neglected in various rock 'n roll "guides", books and by the many so-called "authorities" and "critics" of rock.

The Romantics kept the flame of powerpop alive in the early 80's and finally had a pair of hits with "Talking in Your Sleep" and "One in a Million". These tracks represented a turning point within the group, away from raw guitar riffs and toward a more "mainstream" rock sound. The group continued to grow and tour (even during a decade long legal battle for their rock 'n roll soul) and eventually released the CD titled 61/49 in 2003. When sampling the Romantics catalog of material you'll learn that they managed to churn out "hit worthy" songs by the truck load. You'll also find a group that never lost sight of it's roots and that will take you on a ride through sweet powerpop, raw garage rock, a bit of funky R&B tinged rock, a few Motown inspired efforts, British invasion inspired tracks and of course blues based rock.

This release can stand solid next to the best efforts of the Kinks, Who, Stones and Beatles. In an era ruled by disco and dinosaur rock the Romantics had the heart, vision and talent to bring the Rock 'n Roll dream back to life! If you claim to be a collector of REAL rock 'n roll your collection will not be complete without this CD. ***TEN STARS***

4 out of 5 stars If this CD was an air freshner...........2004-04-20

...its scent would be "Smoky Dive Bar". Yes, one spin of this baby will transport you back to your favorite watering hole on a steamy summer night. My shoes feel sticky from the spilled 45 cent draughts.

Pure fun from beginning to end. The cool, obscure Kinks cover ("She's Got Everything" - BTW, this version is superior to Big Star's cover on "Sister Lovers", and I'm a huge LX fan) more than compensates for "What I Like About You"'s overexposure. So toss out those crummy grunge and emo disks, and P-A-R-T-Y!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2003-07-05

I have had this album in both vinyl and cd format. I cannot believe whenever I put this album on (even after a hiatus of several years) how it simply blows me away.

Fantastic tunes, great driving music, great party music and great to listen to when you are doing odd jobs around the house.

Just remember, TURN IT UP (to eleven even)!

Product Description

The King Biscuit Flower Hour, a mainstay of weekend late-night FM radio throughout the late-'70s and early-'80s, tended to catch groups on the way up. But this live set, recorded in San Antonio in late 1984, not only features the Romantics five years after their definitive single, 1979's garage-rock stomper "What I Like About You," it comes over a year after their comeback hit, 1983's slickly-processed "Talking In Your Sleep." Recorded just before drummer/singer Jimmy Marinos left the band--their last album, 1985's RHYTHM ROMANCE, was recorded without him--this set strips away the soulless over-production which mars the band's later efforts. Without the layers of electronics, "Talking In Your Sleep" and its brethren are catchy, politely rocking pop songs. The set ends with a medley of '60s raveups culminating in the one-two punch of "What I Like About You" and a smoking "Little Latin Lupe Lu."

Album Description

This concert, recorded on Oct. 30, 1983 in San Antonio, at the peak of the group's popularity, it captures them in a powerful, energetic performance, displaying their best garage punk attributes full force along with a surprisingly melodic sound that put them a few steps above bands like the Ramones. It's all here, including 'Talking In Your Sleep' and climaxing with 'What I Like About You.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the best LIVE power-pop CD's EVER!.......2005-12-23

First, a few of the previous reviews are incorrect when they state that Drummer/Singer Jimmy Marinos is not on this CD. He was STILL with the group here (plays drums on every song and sings on many including "What I Like About You").

The Romantics are one of the best live groups I have ever seen and this CD certainly captured a great performance! The first release by the romantics is still the best, but this is a close second! Even if you're a music buyer who doesn't prefer live CD's I think you'll be in for a surprise with this one.

3 out of 5 stars Romantics-'King Biscuit Flower Hour'(King Biscuit)3.5 stars.......2005-06-05

'King Biscuit...' was recorded live at a gig in October,1983 in San Antonio,TX.Features seventeen tracks that run for an hour.I like the Romantics and all,but I really believe they need to get back long-departed drummer/vocalist Jimmy Marinos.Sound is great, with the guys creating some well penned alternative power pop,as only they can.Cuts I enjoyed reliving again the most were "When I Look Into Your Eyes","Rock You Up","Night Like This","Talking In Your Sleep","What I Like About You"(this tune is what originally drew me to this band way back when, always reminded me of early Kinks)and their Kingsmen cover "Little Latin Lupe Lu".Should appeal to most fans of Tommy Tutone,The Knack,The Producers,Plimsouls and Cheap Trick.

5 out of 5 stars A true Rock 'N Roll Classic.......2003-05-06

I'd give it 10 stars but they won't let me!

Places the Romantics right up there with the Kinks and Stones when it comes to live power! I cannot say enough about this CD, if you call your self a fan of real rock' n roll - it doesn't get any better than this. Buy this disc and go see them live TODAY they're still touring and giving it all they have 20 years later!

5 out of 5 stars Rockin' Romantics At Their Best!.......2001-11-29

Absolutely, one of the best live albums ever produced and a must have for people who love the Romantics. All the Original members are here, Jimmy Marinos, Wally Palmar, Mike Skill and Coz Canler, with the exception of Bassist Rich Cole, who left the band after the third album. Great Hooks, Gritty Vocals and Powerful performances make this CD stand out.
All the Hits are here (What I Like About You and Talkin' In Your Sleep)with the exception of 'One In A Million', but there are numbers from everyone of their first four albums.
Marinos sings about a third of the Songs here with Palmar singing the rest. The first ten cuts of this album are non stop party fun! If you thought that The Romantics were some cute cuddly pop rock band, think again. Their brand of Detroit Rock & Roll is amazingly sharp and smokin'.

3 out of 5 stars THE BAND NEEDS MORE FOCUS!!!.......1999-01-31

THE ROMANTICS HAVE A POP STYLE ALL THEIR OWN BUT THEY LACK IT ON THIS CONCERT CD. TUNES ARE GOOD BUT THEY ARE MISSING JIMMY MARINOS PUNCH

5 out of 5 stars Primo 80's Band.......2004-04-24

The Romantics were called New Wave/Power Pop/Punk during the 80's but still are a band that plays just good 'ol Rock-N-Roll.
In Heat is a definite requirement if you seek a good piece of 80's music culture. You won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Another Party Essential.......2003-05-29

1983 hit album "In Heat" is one of my all time favorite CDs. It includes "Talking In Your Sleep" oft-played 80's hits. But you can dig it out more from this CD. Rock You Up is Hewy Lewis styled uptempo fun pop rock. One In A Million is another hit from this album. My personal pick is "Digging On You", a bit similarly styled as The Hooters' "And We Danced". I'm HIP is really fun hip/rock that will please the appreciators of J.Geils Band or The Knacks. Dig much from this CD. Recommended for The Hooters, J.Geils Band and wide range of 80's pop rock fans.
