Customer Reviews:
Bonanza of 36 great classic rock songs!.......2006-10-11
A great way to collect 36 timeless classic tracks .From Roy Orbison,Bob Dylan to Fleetwood Mac,Steve Miller and onto The Eurythmics and Men At Work. It's got a little of everything that most of the time you wouldn't find on many compilations. The only drawback to the cd (at least I see it as a drawback, because I like to make my own compilations)is that it is copy controlled. But,otherwise if your looking for a cd with various styles of music, your sure to enjoy this one.Lewis

Customer Reviews:
Average Oldies.......2005-10-09
If your idea of the "Greatest Hits of All Time" includes SLIM WHITMAN crooning the George Baker selection "UNA PALOMA BLANCA" then this dutch treat is for you. Or if OK re-makes of classics like DEL SHANNON's "Runaway" is your bag, then pull the trigger on tis lot. DEL is found here in a late sixites alternative take titled "RUNAWAY '67". It is always a dangerous sign when the gas is low and former teen idols are re-making their own all-time golden chestnuts.
The sound quality is no better or worse than you find on most of these type of comps. But there are a smattering of neat tracks that don't make your average sack of mostly charted hits.
Also on the plus side, there are a full 24 tracks on this disc, and some of them, while certainly not the "Greatest" of hits are not the type of song commonly found on compilations of the 1960's: CRICKETS, FIVE KEYS, VICKY CARR & MARV JOHNSON, as examples.
Newbies to oldies collections will probably be quite startled to find folk bands like the HIGHWAYMEN actually hit the Top 40 with what may be known today as a children's ditty (MICHAEL ROW THE BOAT ASHORE). And VICKY CARR's name assuredly doesn't get mentioned in the same sentance as EDDIE COCHRAN, but probably would share air time on the same oldies station that play BOBBY GOLDSBORO's sugary ode to a deceased girl "HONEY".
You do get some of the best from the biggest: POOR LITTLE FOOL, CARA MIA, but if you lke little RICKY NELSON or JAY's AMERICANs or early ISLEYS you'd be better served to own their best ofs anyway.
As a dusty set it does not have enough rock or roll, mostly an odd ball collection of spotty hits and misses.
There are better mines to search for Old Gold.
not all surf city, not all una paloma blanca.......2002-03-15
funnily enough, i started listening to this album before i even reached adolescence, after expressing to my parents an interest in dion and the belmonts. most of the time, i would just listen and laugh at some songs' silly or over-serious treatment of otherwise serious occasions - "love potion #9" always tickled my funny bone, as did "who's that lady?" and especially "bang bang." other songs were heavier: ike and tina's two-faced "proud mary," and "the glory of love," which always seems to linger, to dwell in my ears in a way similar to fats domino's slow and penetrating croon. and somehow, "walk don't run" alone managed to instill in me the ability to see beauty and fun in a song that doesn't have well-known choruses to carry it through.
Not all 24 of these sweet songs are really legendary in style, presentation and content. they did not cause shifts in musical paradigms or provoke deep contemplation. there is nothing here that you won't be able to hear on your local oldies station, if you wait around long enough. but, to dismiss this stuff because of its relative simplicity would be too hasty a move for lovers of sound.
this is a great album when you are in the mood for the kind of sounds produced before rubber soul blew brian wilson's mind (and yes, a little bit after, as well): lightweight, simple, often though not entirely upbeat...i have found that it is good to unwind to. and it never fails to provide the same laughs and smiles as when i was a kid, all the way from eddie cochran's visit to his local congressman, to cher falling off her imaginary horse, to the highwaymen's perfect, quieting closing.
in the words of jan and dean: "it's not very cherry, it's an oldie but a goody"...

Customer Reviews:
One of rock n' roll's great secrets.......2006-05-20
X are the greatest band you never heard of. Their brand of rock n' roll is of the most brutal and primitive, yet humorous and cool, nature.
Even in their native Australia, they are unknown outside the inner sanctum of 30 and 40-something inner city hipsters in Sydney and Melbourne.
There is no US or British equivalent. They are that rare and special. A live X experience is absolutely unforgettable.
This live album is a departure from their norm - recorded at Sydney's premier jazz club rather than the usual sticky carpet pub. As a 25th birthday commemoration they added strings and violins etc. to their original four piece sound. Still they couldn't help themselves -the raw punk energy still howls through. Testament to the power of their songwriting is how outstandingly well they stand up to these re-workings.
Three members dead since their 1977 inception, this album is a triumphal testament to their brilliance. They're still unknown, yet the most legendary and seminal of Australian bands amongst those who know. There's no other way to say it.
