If you favor the more aggressive and reckless Old 97's of Wreck Your Life vintage as opposed to the more polished and poppy songsters of Fight Songs fame, this eight-song EP oughta do the trick. Bloodshot compiles four songs from two original seven-inch singles and adds four outtakes from the Wreck Your Life sessions--all were recorded at various points during 1995. The unrelenting rhythmic propulsion, the wild-eyed vocals, and the ferocious guitars that defined them in their salad days are all present and accounted for here. Rhett Miller's shrewd, half-sarcastic, half-soul-bearing lyrics make tracks like "Ray Charles," "Por Favor," and "W.I.F.E." both charming and chafing. Bassist Murry Hammond handles lead vocals on the two tamest tracks, the touching (really) acoustic train song "Sound of Running" and an appealing, straightforward cover of Johnny Cash's "Let the Train Blow the Whistle." Early Tracks reminds us that, at its best, alt country isn't a forced, heavy-handed combination of competing styles but a natural meld that works because punk rock and country music share the same urgency, honesty, and direct style of communication--whether it's punctuated by a lonesome fiddle or a crunching guitar. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars come enjoy harolds super service!.......2003-12-14

Love the old 97s and this is my overall favorite cd. How can you not sing along to crying drunk and w-i-f-e? If you are fan, you will most definetly want to get this cd. However if this is your first time hearing the boys, you may want to start off with one of their full length cds first. Here's to hoping they come touring near western, NY!

4 out of 5 stars Good b-sides and early demos.......2000-10-12

It's telling that even a collection of toss-off demos and b-side's by the Old 97's is better than 75% of the indie-band CD's being released these days. True, this is not on par with the best work the Old 97's have done (i.e. "Wreck Your Life" and "Too Far To Care'), but there are some gems here. 'Ray Charles', "Crying Drunk" and "Por Favor" are among my favorites on this disc.

All in all, this is a must have for any fan of the Old 97's. Let's all hope they get back to their rowdy alt-country style again for their next release.

2 out of 5 stars um... not so good, I'm afraid........2000-08-17

I am a HUGE Old 97's fan, and I found this CD to be very disappointing. "Too Far To Care" is my personal fave, although I like "Fight Songs" and "Wreck Your Life" too. Even "Rhome" has its charm. But despite the different styles the fellas exhibit on these 3 CDs, they have one thing in common: good songs. And that is what this CD lacks. These are obviously B- and C-sides, tracks they didn't put on the original albums for a reason. Only "W-I-F-E" is a standout, and guess what - it's already on "Wreck Your Life." Sorry, I wish it was better, but stick to the other 3 I mentioned.

5 out of 5 stars I love the Old 97s!.......2000-06-18

If you enjoyed "Hitchhike to Rhome", "Too Far to Care", then you will love this disk!

4 out of 5 stars Old 97's at it again!.......2000-06-16

Just when you thought they couldn't do it again they did! This is yet another awesome example of the versitality and catchy tunes from the boys. Their songs make you think and laugh. When I'm feeling down I just pop a CD in and they brighten up my day. This album is great and I recomemd it to all true Old 97's fans!

The summer of 1979 seemed to be John Stewart's season. With the brooding hit "Gold," the former Kingston Trio member attained the chart success that had long alluded him. A year and a half later, he had no label, no chance for a follow-up. But in the early '80s, Stewart was making some very catchy, literate, and accessible pop music. These unreleased (and nearly destroyed) early '80s demos are the evidence. Stewart reworks some old Kingston Trio numbers, some gems from his '60s and '70s country-folk career, and adds many new lyrics, never heard before or since. The demo sound--a bit tinny and remote--doesn't do justice to the fine songwriting contained here, nor does the occasionally overwrought and overly rocking arrangements. More streamlined, almost Byrds-like efforts such as "Cheyenne" and "Diamonds in the Coal" get closer to the poetic soul of Stewart's folk-rock vision. Newcomers might be perplexed by this spotty compilation, but those passionate about this underappreciated journeyman singer-songwriter will warmly welcome the discoveries. --Roy Kasten

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good to have the music back!.......2005-07-29

Demos? Garage recording? Well, maybe so, but this is still excellent work so strong that it will make little difference to the listener that some of it wasn't done in a studio. Avid Stewartistas and Bloodliners (and you know who you are...) will want this CD to add to their collection of America's best living singer-songwriter (yes, I am serious about that) and for the sheer poetic energy this master artist provides. Newcomers will find the tracks enticing and can rest assured they will not be disappointed and will soon join those who appreciate this under-appreciated artist. If you like folk and/or rock, listen to Cheyenne, Under Heavy Fire, and Wide Eyed in Babylong. Folksters who've been around a while will find Molly Dee and Old John Webb echoing from a time when folk music was dominant. Give it a try - you can't go wrong.

2 out of 5 stars you gotta be kiddin.......2003-01-18

That's right. You gotta be kiddin with this recording of John Stewart. Appleseed Recordings used two tin cans and a string to record this cd. And the string was broken. Where do they get off putting this garbage out. I've heard pirate recordings of John Stewart taken 100 yards from the stage that sound better than this. Wow, get some equipmemt guys. I give John Stewart seven stars for the music, one star for recording with these guys, and zero for the recording. He's not a happy guy about this recording either, just look at his face on the back of the cd. Neither am I. Buy something else. Like anything else.

5 out of 5 stars Bartender, give this man a label!.......2002-06-12

That's right, if only this icon of music quality had had a record label at the time, we could have enjoyed this music almost 20 years ago. Shame on the music industry for overlooking this incredibly talented man. Please don't be dissuaded by certain comments in the featured review. The arrangements are not "overwrought" or "overly rocking". They are warm and pleasurably rocking. Do I detect a folk purist? John is a first class rocker on American Way, Under Heavy Fire, Liddy Buck, and All the Desperate Men. But if you love folk music, there is plenty here to please you, notably The Escape of Old John Webb, Cheyenne, and Tears of the Sun. The sound quality is fine and is not "tinny" - despite being in storage 18 years in a garage.

The CD is generously endowed with 18 songs, but not all are equally good. Listen to Tracks 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14 and 15, and you have a very solid 12-track album. Taking all 18 tracks together, a weakness emerges, the weakness of repetition. You notice a sameness between the lesser songs and some of the better ones that robs the better ones of some of their power. You notice that there are too many songs in a major key, and it makes you long for a "Gold" or "Midnight Wind". When a minor key song finally comes along (#16) it is a weak one. A little more pruning by John and Tom would have made this collection a real killer. In giving this collection 5 stars, I am pretending they had done so.

5 out of 5 stars Woah. Yeah! Let the Big Horse Runnnnn!.......2001-10-05

What else can you say but Thanks Tom Delisle! This is right up there in my book with California Bloodlines, Cannons in the Rain, The Phoenix Concerts and Bandera as the best the Big Dude has ever done. What a shame there was no label smart enough to release it at the time. John was on a roll, wasn't he? There are 18 songs here, of course not all are created equal. But the 10 - 12 best songs are better than anything else you might have heard in the early 80's, by anyone. AND BTW, these recordings were DEMOS, thrown in a box in John's garage, so of course the recording quality is not what you'd expect from a major-label release.

5 out of 5 stars A long-hidden gem emerges!.......2001-04-15

John Stewart is one of the most underappreciated singer-songwriters in the world. I've been a fan of his since his Kingston Trio days and have enjoyed the dozens (!) of albums he has put out on his own. This new CD, chock-full of beautiful songs long-buried in a box in John's closet, is stunning to listen to. Some of his most beautiful songs ever (and I thought I had heard them all) appear on this CD. "It Might As Well Be Love" can make you cry and "Under Heavy Fire" is a rocker that you will find in your head all day long. Other songs ("Cheyenne," "The Escape of Old John Webb") have been on John's or the Kingston Trio's albums before, but have exciting new performances here. John's guitar work on "Cheyenne" is absolutely magnificent and his new arrangement of "The Escape of Old John Webb" breathes wonderful new life into this classic American folk song. If you are a longtime John Stewart fan, this CD is like a dream come true. If you are unfamiliar with John, this album is one of his finest and a great introduction to this modern-day Woody Guthrie.

This collection of the songs Steve Earle recorded before his full-length debut, Guitar Town, in 1986 is interesting only as a historical document. In fact, there's very little here to predict the eye for detail that would soon emerge. Most of the 14 songs here are rockabilly-like numbers that sound downright generic due to cliched lyrics and tepid playing. Even on songs he'd later rerecord more successfully--most notably "The Devil's Right Hand"--the insights are muted by how far Earle has to go as a singer. This portrait of the artist as a young man is more like a sketch, and none too revealing. --David Cantwell

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Hey say may!!!.......2003-08-22

This disk has it's moments. If you look at it from the right perspective. Here's a young Earle finding his place and doing so with some mighty big shadows close by. Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark we're mentors and friends at this point of his career. And if you listen you can hear their influence. But you also have to know that here's a great voice being muted by the Nashville music machine at the same time.
Personally My Baby Worships Me, Open Up Your Door and Breakdown Lane show some great style and potiental. As well there is some amazing humor stuck in there too. If you are a fan give it a listen. Just don't expect it to be I Feel Alright!!!

2 out of 5 stars Not Great.......2002-03-19

This compilation, recorded in 1983 at the now-defunct LSI studio in Nashville, was the product of Earle's record deal with CBS. "The Devil's Right Hand" and "A Little Bit In Love" show writing promise, and Earle's impressive, gritty Texas guitar and sparse rockabilly instrumental arrangements (particlarly "Nothin But You") make this piece appealing for Earle die-hards and collectors, but was deemed unfit for country radio and the finished project here was unceremoniously shelved. (Ironically, "A Little Bit In Love" would later surface on Patty Loveless' second MCA CD.) For the most part, however, Earle's singing is not up to par and the few rays of light contained here did not prepare the listener (or Nashville's music heirarchy) for the monolith that was to come.

    Album Description

"Early Warnings" is a thematic and all-too-relevant collection of songs concerning war, human rights abuses and the spirit required to transcend these dysfunctions that were selected by the pioneering "women's music" and political activist Holly Near from two of her previous albums, "Watch Out! (1984) and "Sky Dances" (1989). Both of those records were originally released on Holly's own much-missed Redwood Records and have been unavailable for the last decade. "Early Warnings" contains nine songs from "Watch Out!" that are making their CD debut here, four songs from "Sky Dances," and the version of "Quiet Early Mornings" that Holly contributed to Appleseed's award-winning 1998 release, "Where Have All the Flowers Gone: The Songs of Pete Seeger, Vol. 1."

As Holly describes the contents of "Early Warnings," "Most of the songs were written in the 1980s. Reagan was president…Fear-based thinking and fundamentalism were on the rise. There were many early warnings…and the storms just keep on coming."

The song "Watch Out" warns that "there's the rumble of war in the air," pointing a finger at the Reagan administration's militarism. The political "death machine" and the religious right wing are put on notice that "the meek are ready, armed with a loving hand," on "The Meek are Getting Ready." "War of the Flea" is also about the battle between the small and the mighty.

Holly's strong feminist beliefs are the basis of "She," which Holly calls "a mythological song about the rise of women in the face of oppression," "Step It Out Nancy," in which a woman rejects an arranged marriage, and "The Train Song," described by Holly as "the lament of a poor woman who can't seem to get out of her situation of bad times and hard knocks."

Not all of "Early Warning's" songs, many of them Near originals, concern confrontation. "Sky Dances" is a Native American tribute to nature. "Couple of Friends" and "West Virginia Friend" are tranquil meditations on friendship, and "Sun Won't Stop" is about Holly's father. The CD ends on a hymnlike note with "Quiet Early Morning," reminding us "We can still have singing tomorrows."

Holly's warm, unafraid vocals are accompanied by world-renowned instrumentalist John McCutcheon (dulcimer, banjo, guitar), members of the chamber folk ensemble Trapezoid, New Age bassist Michael Manring and longtime Near associate John Bucchino on piano.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Moving, Inspiring, Get Up and Go.......2004-04-29

First I have to admit that I am a fan of Holly's but her music is always on target. Songs written some ten years ago are still relevant although, that doesn't say much for our times. If you are looking for inspiration and hope and at the same time wanting a message to get you up and moving towards change, this is the album for you.
Holly has a very polished voice without sounding like an opera singer. Her words are clear and easy to follow. I like her music because there are many songs I can sing on my own or sing along with. That to me is the true test of a songwriter and singer; if you can carry them along with you in your head or sing along. Too often these days, without a lyric guide, I can't understand even a fourth of the words of a song.
Also, if you are feeling frustrated with our world situation and need some hope, Holly's songs on This album both remind us we must change ourselves and our society and at the same time, give us hope that change is possible. I don't feel so alone when I hear her words. This is not a professional review; just one that says this is one of her best and very much worth buying.

As a little kid growing up amongst the 8tracks and .33s and .45s of my parents collection a couple of albums stuck out as far as lifelong memories go. One of those bands was the ventures. Instrumental music with a "voice" of only drums, guitars, bass, and moog: could never get tired of listening to TELSTAR! The other band that stuck in my memory bank was Frankie Stein and His Ghouls, whom i thought were the venture's alter ego only with halloween like screams, moans, and doors creaking! On halloween we would open the door, turn the lights off and have Frankie pouring out of the speakers! It sure beat putting in a cd with 100 sounds when you could have good instrumental music plus halloween sounds at the same time! But it doesnt have to be Halloween to enjoy this band, who, until now was very hard to find in cd form let alone on an album.....I gave this a four because i dont know what the quality of the cd is like yet, but i do know if u like instrumental rock or surfer rock you will not be disappointed with F.S. and H.GLs

Yes, after a year of trying, I have finally managed to get hold of this brills CD. Absolutely love it. 1st wave SKA sound at its best with the voice of an angel. Could have rivalled the one and only SLACKERS if they had not split up... So if any of the RADIATION KINGS are watching, reform and crack on with some more of your greatness, I'm sure Django wouldn't mind helping out again. All traditional SKA fans out there, get it, you won't be disapointed, you'll just love it. Play it LLOOOUUUDDDD!!!!

    4 out of 5 stars NYC's best.......2005-11-12

with King Django producing and assisting in the horn section, this album is one of the ripest to come from the stubborn records collection. I've also got thier vinyl EP, but I'm waiting for the turtable. I lament that these guys haven't stayed together as ska pop has died down, but "the Early Years" should stand the test of time if we can keep the thing in circulation.

All together, this is a jazzy and loose album, bringing in memories of the Miles Davis quartet and the Skatalites. I'd go so far to say that this is what "No Doubt" could have been if they tried hard enough and avoided being too commercial. It's worth the buy. I'd like to see what these guys are up to these days. I only wish there was a little more tightness in the lyrics.

    5 out of 5 stars stuff.......2000-10-16

These are hardworking young musicians. This "album" has good laughs, deep thoughts, good meditations, rocks, funk, groove, and a house full of heart. There, that sounds good and abstractly accurate. I respect the rules of the english language, but freeform thought is not about being under command(HWM). These sounds are so good they'll keep you soft and warm, hot with energy(in YOU), cool with a never too late freedom and a sparkling eye smile at the sun's set or rise. OK, goodbye.

      Customer Reviews:

      4 out of 5 stars A Nice Rockabilly Collection.......2003-03-08

I bought this CD set primarily based upon the previous review; but I'm not nearly as exuberant. I do not agree with some of the comments made by that reviewer. These songs are NOT all first rate. There are some gems in this collection but some clunkers as well. I would find it hard to believe that these songs or artists are even remotely familiar to most oldies music fans and would venture to say that none made it to the Hot 100 charts (not that that makes a difference). The sound quality is for the most part very good but a few songs sound like they might have been recorded from 45s.

I do agree that for the price this is a very good buy. The great majority of songs are in a rockabilly vein with some coming very close to being considered C&W. I especially enjoyed the instrumentals which were pure rock n' roll with wailing saxes. There are some nice captioned photos but no liner notes on the artists or any indication where or when the songs were recorded. I got the impression these were probably recorded in the late 50s, possibly in the Tennessee area.

Basically I would say that if you can't deal with rockabilly or C&W, skip it. If you enjoy that type of music, buy it!

5 out of 5 stars BUDGET PRICE - MILLION DOLLAR SOUND.......2002-05-06

50 TRACKS, 2 CDs, [FOR THE LOW PRICE]. UNBELIEVABLE. WHAT A STEAL. WHEN I FIRST GOT THIS SET, I THOUGHT: OKAY, CHEAP PRICE, CHEAP SOUND. BOY, WAS I AMAZED. THE SOUND IS FANTASTIC. THE SONGS ARE ALL FIRST RATE. GO BY THE LIST. THERE'S NOT ONE YOU'D BE DISSAPOINTED IN. SURE, SOME YOU PROBABLY REMEMBER, BUT MOST ARE RARE (VERY RARE). BUY IT & YOU'LL LOVE ME FOREVER.
