Flyin' High SOARS!!.......2006-02-04
I always thought that 1979's Blackfoot Strikes was this band's first record. I have two copies of this album on vinyl, and I also have the cd. This is an extremely satisfying record. I can listen to it over and over again. When I play this record I tend to CRANK IT LOUD to hear the AMAZING Guitar solos, thos AMAZING guitar TONES. Rickey Medlocke's vocals are far from being shabby as well. This record also came out on Epic Records, way back in 1976, the year Skynyrd released Gimmie Back My Bullets. The thing I like about this record is that it is not a weak record with a couple of great tunes. This record is a GREAT record with understated classics. The greatness of the album is the way it subtly takes you away. It's true that a couple of songs are not as captivating as others, but all in all Flyin' High is a tremendously ROCKING cd. My favorite tracks are Island of Life which has one of those tremendous opening solos, and Junkie's Dream. And I find it more than a coincidence that Blackfoot wrote an anti-drug song, in the same tradition as some of the classic Skynyrd anti drug anthems. Anybody remember That Smell or The Needle and the Spoon, or how about JUNKIE from the box set--- 1970!! put together shortly before Rickey and Gregg T. Walker helped to record Skynyrd's Muscle Shoals demo album? Junkie is credited to Allen Collins and Ronnie Van Zant, but I bet Rickey heard that tune before we did. This album is just so good and understated from start to finish. Never in my life have I heard such pure and tight and BALLSY guitar solos. The tones at times are absolutely amazing.
I think the most fault that I find on the recording would have to be the rather constant shouting wail of singer Rickey Medlocke. He needs song vehicles to take his voice to different places. But I don't find any fault with this record. Why talk about what this record is not. There is no Train, Train classic on this record, but taken as a whole, the SUSTAINED guitar, bass, drum garage sound makes this a VASTLY SUPERIOR record when compared to Blackfoot Strikes. And I don't know how to properly evalute what might have been accomplished in the studio, but for my money Blackfoot's Flyin' High SOARS HIGHLY over the Strikes record. The Strikes record has lame covers, such as the FREE song Wishing Well. I Got a Line on You also appears to be a cover song, as does Pay My Dues.
The thing you discover when listening to Strikes and Flyin' High is that Train, Train and Highway Song sound as if they belong on Flyin' High. If those two songs had been on this classic 1976 record, Blackfoot would have been rivaling Skynyrd. Clearly this is a great record. I feel good knowing that Ronnie must have known what a great record Rickey and company had produced. And just think if those two songs had been on this record. If that had happened, THEN, Flyin' High would be the CLASSIC that Strikes became. And everyone knows by now that routine covers on albums can be just that. I mean, who did Rickey think Blackfoot was, The Allman Brothers? And I didn't enjoy the Blackfoot bootleg that I got years ago. Actually I trashed it. But to be fair, the recording was filled with pops, but it seems the band live was just WILD and relentlessly wailing. Flyin' High feels more like ART!!!!!!!! GET IT!!!
Pure Blackfoot.......2005-05-21
Plain and simple, this cd sounds like the purest form of the Blackfoot sound. It's raw...not alot of production. It's guitars, bass, drums, and kickin' vocal. There's not alot of spit n' shine polish...and I like that. As soon as I popped it in and Medlocke started wailing, I began to smile. "Feelin' good" is very Synyrd-ish...up tempo and groovin'. "Flyin' high", "Dancin' man", and "Junkies dream" all have wonderful, powerhouse guitar riffs...I loved all three. "Try a little harder" is ballad like and as soon as I heard it, I thought, THAT is the classic Blackfoot sound. It's a great piece of music. The weakies here are "Stranger on the road" and "Mother". Other than that, there's not alot on this cd to skip over. All in all, if you liked "Strikes" and "Marauder" then step up to the plate for another fine serving of Blackfoot. "Flyin' high" wont leave you disappointed.
fly a little lower..........2004-10-26
One of My least favorite Blackfoot cds, it's not bad, just weak compared to Their other albums. The only one that really stood out to Me is try a little harder, not a bad listen, just kinda forgettable.
Raw and unpolished southern rock.......2003-05-05
This is a solid (vintage) southern rock album - no doubt about it. It has an unpolished rawness that got lost later on, especially on "Vertical smiles". Some people would consider this a lost gem!
But the main problem with Blackfoot's "Flyin' high" is too little variation between the songs. The guitar riffs (often too many notes which gives a slightly frantic feeling) on which the songs are built around is very similar to one another, and the tempo of the songs are also rather similar. This results in a feeling that it's more or less one long song instead of ten different tunes. If you choose to play not more than a few songs each time (and not the whole album) you'll find it much better.
Good to have it back in print.......2002-09-22
This is a very good southern rock cd from blackfoot. My favorites on are feelin good(great feel to it), dancing man, junkie's dream. All the songs on it are good, however. Mother is ballad type thing but most of this cd is very guitar oriented.

Hard to find... worth the leg work.......2002-04-17
This was one of those discoveries that happened in my own back yard. I know as well as anyone that the Kansas City area isn't the Epoch of new and innovative music so imagine my surprise when this Overland Park based trio blew me out of the water.
The whole album is almost like a whispy video game dream with lots of creative high notes. Missle Command is the perfect mini-epic. Birthday is the perfect mantra for melancoly folk, and King of the Wide Eyed Girls is just funky cool.
If you buy one Shallow album, this is their best. (3D Stereo Trouble would be my second place pick...)
Currently Shallow is disbanded (the drummer moved to the coast I think...) but the heart and soul of the band carries on. They've since refocused and renamed themselves as the Capsules. Reverser (by the Capsules) is also very good, but far more mellow in tone.
What happened to this innovative, inventive band?.......2002-03-14
"High Flying Kid Stuff" is an extraordinary release that actually deserves five stars, but the production leaves much to be desired. Listening to this music takes me back to the days of childhood innocence when the world was still fresh and new, and not the nightmarish place you conclude it to be the more you grow up. Although an underlying sinister element and adult themes are evident in the music, Julie Shields keeps the tone light and happy, as her vocal style is somewhat reminiscent of Alvin and the Chipmunks. Please do not interpret this as insulting or demeaning, as her style offers a nice juxtaposition with the occasional heavy sounds, although interpreting lyrics can be difficult. If someone could tell me whatever became of this band, I would truly appreciate it.
closer and closer to bliss.......1999-04-20
i have had this album for well over a year now and it never ceases to amaze me. its the perfect music for whatever dreams you might have, for whatever trips you might take, for any flights into bliss you might need, for whatever video games you might be playing. "remember that music in your car when you dropped me off last night? well i had a dream with the most beautiful music in it, and it was that song" or she said something very similar. shallow created that song.
A must own CD!.......1999-04-03
If you like Mazzy Star you will love this record. The wonderful, dreamy vocals of lead singer Julie Shields combines with unique guitar sounds and well-written songs to make an excellent album. This group seems to have a much wider variety of sounds than Mazzy and never gets old. GET IT NOW!

Flyin' High with Edmond Hall.......2007-06-08
This is easily a must have for Edmond Hall fans. You get two lp's on one cd with a total time of 70:51. The first 10 tunes were originally released on lp as"Rumpus On Rampart Street". The recording took place at Nola Penthouse Studio in New York in June of 1959. The line-up of musicians for this session is staggering...Edmond Hall, Omer Simeon, and Herb Hall on clarinets, Dick Cary on piano, Jimmy Raney on guitar, Al Hall on the bass, and Jimmy Crawford on drums. They play six Edmond Hall originals and four standards. The rhythm section is a real delight and Edmond's hot, intelligent, and intense soloing over top is just the iceing on the cake. This session alone is worth the ticket price.
The second part of this cd is from a 1949 Boston radio broadcast and the line-up is as good as it gets...Johnny Windhurst: trumpet, Vic Dickenson: trombone, Kenny Kersey: piano, John Field: bass, Jimmy Crawford is, again, the drummer, and Edmond Hall plays clarinet.
The band stretches out on eight familiar numbers and while all the players solo admirably, the under recorded and short lived Johnny Windhurst should be singled out for his marvellous playing.
Edmond Hall was, in my opinion, the greatest and most interesting of all the early clarinettists. His expressive playing was a highlight on many recordings. His solos were always inventive and stimulating, his tone unique, and easily recognizable. Thanks to the I.A.J.R.C.(international association of jazz record collectors)and to John Norris for his informative liner notes. This one is enthusiastically recommended.

Johnny Copeland came out of the same Houston scene where the mix of blues, swing, and R&B produced fellow singer-guitarists like T- Bone Walker, Albert Collins, Gatemouth Brown, and Joe Hughes. With his gruff southern soul vocals, his elastic sense of phrasing, his fondness for horns and his piercing guitar solos, Copeland made some of the best blues albums of the '80s. Flyin' High is his first on a major label and is everything a blues comeback album should be. It boasts strong original songs, smart horn charts, guest stars who came to work rather than schmooze, and performances that look forward rather than backward. --Geoffrey Himes
Customer Reviews:
I agree with the editoral review.......2006-03-11
The editoral review pretty much sums things up.
I just want to add that the couple of instrumentals are brilliant.
Johnny Copeland is in the Albert Collins and Luther Allison school in it is less "cityfied" with a rougher edge sound.
The only concerns are the cd is only 41 minutes long, where even the out takes or disgarded tracks would have probably been quality stuff.
While Dr. John plays on it, don't expect the typical version of jambalya (on the bayo), it is a bit alternative

Product Description
Born in Brooklyn in January of 1941, Richie Havens grew up in the rough-and-tumble Bedford-Stuyvesant community, and as the eldest of nine children, he was used to working a crowd from his earliest days.
It wasnt long before he was given a record contract, but even though he made a couple of albums with the Douglas label, neither was released until later in his career, when his celebrity was already firmly established. At this juncture, Albert Grossman, the legendary manager and founder of Bearsville Records came into Richies life and a second record deal ensued, this time with Verves Forecast imprint. Forecast was primarily a folk label, as opposed to the jazz and comedy releases for which its parent was more widely known.
Havens first record for the label, Mixed Bag, was released in 1967. A remarkable cover of Bob Dylans Just Like A Woman earned Havens his reputation as a leading interpreter of Dylans material, no mean feat at those times, when competition in the Dylan cover derby was robust. His next album, Something Else Again, became Havens` first charting album, and its success carried over to the previous record, which entered the charts at that time as well. At that point, Douglas decided to capitalize on Havens burgeoning reputation and released the two albums they had shelved earlier. By 1969, the year that would cement his international reputation as a consequence of his performance at Woodstock, Havens stepped into the producers chair, co-producing the double-disc Richard P. Havens, 1983, which gave fans their first exposure to his live sound.
Customer Reviews:
True Sixties Folk-Rock Gems.......2005-12-17
What the Product Description above doesn't mention is that this is a compilation of Havens' three aforementioned albums for the Verve-Forecast label in toto: Mixed Bag, Something Else Again, and Richard P. Havens, 1983. All three are superb, and 1983 has justifiably achieved legendary status.
This release is a limited edition, so it's probably no longer widely available. Will some enterprising company (Verve, if you still have the rights) please release these recordings for general distribution?!?!

Hilarious!.......2002-01-15
There are no previous Jerry Reed Cd's available that are done Live in concert, until now. It isn't a full length concert Cd,but is very entertaining. The monologue of Jerry's F-16 flight is a funny story. Don't miss 'tryin' Stuff On'. Its funny! Some of the songs have never been heard on CD before, but there are a few favorites such as 'The Bird'included. You can hear Jerry speak between songs and laugh at his own jokes. Its just a good time. Jerry even dedicates the last 2 songs to the late Jackie Gleason and tells about working with him.Get it and enjoy yourself and Jerry Reed !!
Almost Classic Jerry Reed.......2001-07-27
This album has some great classic "Jerry funny" style songs but lacks some luster. "The Bird" showcases Jerry's talent in impersonating some of the Old Boys of Country and is entertaining enough to enthrall my 6 yr old until the end. (No small feat)Jerry's pickin gets your toe tappin and tempts you to sing along with him.Overall, I am glad that I have this one in my collection being a true Jerry Reed fan.
