As a band the Grass Roots were always a shadowy bunch, a front for studio musicians and professional songwriters looking to get their songs on the radio. They scored 14 top 40 hits during their reign in the late '60s/early '70s and their hits were among the catchiest and most enjoyable of the AM radio era. "Let's Live for Today," "Midnight Confessions," "Bella Linda," "Two Divided by Love," and a slew of others are shameless pop made brilliant by multilayered harmonies and arrangements that liberally borrowed from folk-rock and R&B. The Grass Roots may have been product, but what great product. --Rob O'Connor

Album Description

This low-priced disc is far & away the best single-CD compilation ever issued of the Grass Roots' work, 16 chart singles covering every phase of their history, from 1966's 'Where Were You When I Needed You' (in its actual hit version) thru 'Let's Live for Today' & 'Midnight Confessions' to their last hit, 1972's 'The Runway.' Originally released in 1996. MCA.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2007-05-26

This will certainly take you back in time. The Grassroots had so many hits and they are all here and are the original versions that you heard on the radio! My personal favorite is "The River Is Wide", which gets very little airplay on oldies radio stations. If you are a Grassroots fan, you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Grass Roots 2007.......2007-05-08

Just saw the Grass Roots(Grill and others) at the Sellersville Theater, in Sellersville, PA. He was using a cane but still sounded great. This takes me back to my childhood days and listening to the sound bites on this CD I am amazed how well he still sounds. I really recommend you buy this one. He also has a great stage presence and really interacted with the crowd. I would definitely recommend anyone who enjoyed this band in their youth to take time to see them. Yes, even after all these years! The crowd is small, personal and you won't regret it. He even cut a live CD in 2000 that he sells on tour.

5 out of 5 stars POP MUSIC DELUXE = GRASS ROOTS style !.......2007-04-26

Well, what a great CD. Listen, I remember sitting in the backseat of my parents car, I was about 10 or 11 yrs old, listening to KLIF AM radio, Dallas. Hearing The Grass Roots songs through those cheap GM Chevy speakers was almost as good as ice-cream. I had just started playing drums (thanks, Ringo), and the Grass Roots songs propelled me even more. (I am going somewhere with this). Later, in the 80's, I went to a Texas Rangers baseball game where Herman's Hermits, Gary Puckett and the Union Gap, The Monkees and The Grass Roots were playing a special show after the game. Well, I will say this, they were all good, but the stand-out (BY FAR) was Rob Grill and whatever Grass Roots band was performing with him. He KILLED the crowd, and let me tell you, those songs sounded as good as they did when I was sitting in the backseat of the car many years before. Get this CD. As a drummer, I've always wondered if Hal Blaine was playing drums on this CD. Hmmmmm. Anyone know for sure? (Hal was a monster drummer in the 60's and played on everything for everyone).

You will listen to this CD for a very long time. POP PERFECTION that STILL sounds GREAT!

4 out of 5 stars An unknown tidbit about "The Grass Roots".......2007-03-28

before American Bandstand had a song "written" for them (by none other than Barry Manilow!) the theme song for American Bandstand was "Midnight Confessions" by The Grass Roots!

Now, I dare you say The Grass Roots weren't an important musical group! Before MTV, American Bandstand was the BOMB!

5 out of 5 stars A definite blast from the past.......2007-03-09

If you remember and loved the Grassroots, you will still love them.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent hits album of Steely Dan!!.......2007-03-21

What a wonderful album this is!! This Greatest Hits album of Steely Dan is the one to own. My mother used to have it on LP back in the day, but now I have it on LP, tape and CD. This album was originally released as a 2 record set with a gatefold cover when it first hit the stores in 1978. The regular cassette of this title came out some years later. The CD of this album is an import (from Canada), but it's still the same, retains the cover art and the inside photo of the two guys of Steely Dan with an older man playing a piano in the background. I like most of the songs on this album, and this group is fun to listen to. They are not heavy metal and their music is not the type that will give you a headache. Very mellow and groovy, indeed. For anyone who is just getting acquainted with the oldies and this group, in general, this album is a good start. It has 18 songs on here so there is a generous portion of their material here. And, with having this album on CD, you don't have to change from one record to the other in the way you had to with the 2 LP set back in the day. Get this title while you can!! Don't be scared away by the price though; I think in my own opinion that imported versions of products are slightly more costly than domestic ones. If this title on CD was a domestic release, we would only pay between 10-15 dollars for it, in general. Let Steely Dan put you in the groove!!!

4 out of 5 stars Second-best Dan comp.......2005-09-01

At first glance, you may think, "Wow! Eighteen tracks! This is pretty good!" It is, actually, and it's a lot better than Decade of Dan. However, the problems set in quickly. For instance, the compilation makers obviously don't know there are more good songs on CBT than Do It Again and Reelin' in the Years! At least Dirty Work, if not Kings, should be included. The Countdown to Ecstasy material's good, but what about Boston Rag and Your Gold Teeth? The Pretzel Logic material is strong, other than the absence of Monkey In Your Soul. Any World would've been welcome, but the Katy Lied selections are good. But what about Don't Take Me Alive, from Royal Scam? How about Royal Scam's title track? Thankfully, the selections are strong. Peg...I don't really like Peg, I'm obviously the only Danfan who thinks that way, but oh well. Josie's good, but I could've swapped both for Deacon Blues and Home At Last myself.
This was released a bit before Gaucho, which explains the lack of superb tracks Hey Nineteen and Babylon Sisters. At least they skipped Time out of Mind.
So, do you get this, Decade of Dan or Show Biz Kids? It's all about the money. If you don't want to, or can't, spend much, Decade of Dan should be where you go. If you have a bit more money but still are on a tight budget, here. If you've got a lot of cash, lend me some and check out Show Biz Kids. You could also cheat and buy Citizen Steely Dan, but that costs a small fortune. You could also buy the albums, particularly their first five (Can't Buy a Thrill, Countdown to Ecstasy, Pretzel Logic, Katy Lied, Royal Scam), if you really wanted to go deep.

3 out of 5 stars c'mon... get the anthology, or the albums.......2004-12-14

I know, you're still picturing that big groovy 2-record set you had back in the 70's, with the drink rings on it and the slightly pungent smell when the gatefold was opened...

But face it - those days are over. Do you see any records for sale on Amazon? No. Don't live in the past. If you have to use cd's (well, at least if you're stuck shopping here), make sure you're taking advantage of what they have to offer. There's a pretty stellar 2 disc set titled _Show-Biz Kids_ that only costs a few bucks more than this vaguely overpriced relic, and sounds a whole lot better. Not to mention that it covers a lot more of the group's musical achievements. And if you're a casual fan, thinking that might be more than you'd want to own, trust me - the odds are far greater of the purchase leading to further acquisitions than of it feeling like overkill. The music is just that good. Or if you're really ready to take me at my word, you *could* just start buying the albums... _Pretzel Logic_ and _Aja_ are real winners... or start anywhere, really...

4 out of 5 stars My First Taste of Genius!.......2004-09-07

As a teenager in the 80's, I was familiar with several Steely Dan songs from the radio, but this LP was the first thing of theirs I bought, and it sold me for life. Objectively, this is a solid collection of their many hits and styles, but subjectively, this made me want to go out and buy every one of their albums, which I now have on CD. Their songs just might hold up better than other band I know (including Rush, my absolute favorite band). All I can say is that I will never get tired of listening to this music, since it was obviously built to last!!!

4 out of 5 stars Adequate.......2004-06-21

This is an adequate compilation of the "radio hits". The albums give a more complete picture of the group and should be purchased first. However, this one has "Here at the Western World", which made its initial appearance here. "Greatest Hits" is good for the car. It misses quite a few key tracks, like "FM", "King of the World", "Boston Rag", "Don't Take Me Alive", "Deacon Blues", and anything from "Gaucho" (this preceded "Gaucho" by two years). "Greatest Hits" and the companion "Gold" are good and should be purchased in tandem. I would recommend any of the actual studio albums and the "Complete Steely Dan" box set, with every one of the songs from the first era, 72-80. This will suffice for casual fans and those addicted to the FM dial. Radio programmers will also love this for its conciseness. I would not recommend this to Dan fanatics, though. Two more thoughts: "Chain Lightning" and "Dirty Work" should have been here, and I'd like to see an "official" live SD release from the early 70's ("Record Plant" is only available in bootleg form, but is a must- buy).

Album Description

Nearly a decade after Boney M called it quits, the man behind the band, Frank Farian, put together a musically similar duo who became far more successful (and infamous) than anyone had expected. Initially, everyone loved Milli Vanilli and their hook-laden singles that straddled both the Pop and R&B markets. Then, once it was discovered that the two gents in the videos and on the album covers did not sing on their recordings, everyone despised them. Now, nearly 20 years and one suicide later, the public has forgiven them for their sins and Milli Vanilli's melodic slices of Dance pop are in high demand again! 16 tracks including the hits 'Blame It On The Rain', 'Girl You Know It's True' and more. Sony/BMG.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-07-11

This CD takes me back through out time while growing up. I don't care if they were lip syncers, this cd is still good to me, and this CD will always bring back eventful memories throughout my life.

3 out of 5 stars Did they have this many songs for hits??? ;-l.......2007-06-26

Despite what you think of these guys (or whoever sung their material), some of their songs were great. Girl I'm Gonna Miss You, Blame It On The Rain and Get Your Number. But even as a fan of theirs back in the day, I don't recall all of these songs being 'hits'. I think this is a poor attempt to make a little more money. Sure the music is ok, but if you already own their main cd (or cassette as the case may be), then this purchase is totally unnesessary.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Before Meat Loaf, there was Tom!.......2007-07-11

This compilation encompasses both the early and the later hits of the legendary vocalist. The most unforgettable songs from his most productive period in the 1960s and early 1970s are here: the country classic Green Green Grass Of Home, classic pop like It's Not Unusual, What's New Pussycat, She's A Lady and I'll Never Fall in Love Again and pulsating vocal rock or dramatic power ballads (Pre-Meatloafian) like Delilah, Thunderball, Help Yourself, Daughter Of Darkness and Young New Mexican Puppeteer. There are some omissions, like Detroit City and minor hits such as Once Upon a Time, Little Lonely One, and With These Hands.

The second phase of his career is well represented by his innovative collaborations with new generation artists like Art Of Noise - the magnificent Kiss (1988), Burning Down The House with the Cardigans, the cover of the Three Dog Night hit Mama Told Me Not To Come with Stereophonics, the Medley with Robbie Williams and Stoned In Love with Chicane. Of course his booming baritone is the factor that holds all the styles together, whether it's the lush orchestral arrangements of the 1960s or the more experimental stuff of recent years. So although there are some important omissions, this album deserves five stars for providing a thorough overview of an impressive body of work.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Just like you remember.......2007-06-11

Writing this from the perspective of someone who has gone to great lengths to acquire decent David Cassidy music for his fiancee, I can tell you that this CD is probably one of the best ones I have found. It blends classic Partridge Family hits with modern David Cassidy, and every song sounds wonderful. There was enough of the old stuff to keep even me interested, and the "new" music was actually quite good. David has a fantastic singing voice which is often overlooked because of the bubble-gum pop that he did in the 70's...but after seeing him live in April (took my fiancee for her birthday), I can honestly tell you that he's still got it! And so does this CD...you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection.......2007-04-12

This cd is an excellent mix of David Cassidy songs with Partridge Family highlights interspersed. It is a very interesting concept to set it up this way.

Anyone can argue over what has been omitted or included for we all have our Partridge favorites. The important thing is it is an excellent overview of those very happy years and as another reviewer said - is remastered for the best sound quality yet with any of these collections.

It is an awesome listen and stays in my cd carousel all the time. A definite must for fans.

4 out of 5 stars Good, But Could Be Better..........2007-02-09

No doubt about it, the sound quality on this DC/PF cd is the best out there! And while the song selection is decent, it could be so much better!

Obviously, David had a hand...maybe the sole hand...in this song selection. Although he hates Doesn't Somebody Want to be Wanted, that is no excuse for leaving it off a greatest hits collection, since it was one of the highest charting PF singles. (Apparently he hates the song because he hates talking (not singing) during a song, a la Elvis' Are You Lonesome Tonight. But then why doesn't he object to his talking in Echo Valley 26809, which he includes in this set??) Also, if he was going to include songs after his Bell label days, why did he stop at I Write the Songs and Darlin' (which is a terribly truncated version) and not include, say, Lyin' to Myself? He should simply have gone solely with the 1970-1974 period. And You Are Always On My Mind instead of, say, Friend and a Lover, or Brown Eyes, or Point Me, or so many other great choices??!

Anyway, it still includes most of the best PF/DC songs, and for that, it is definitely worth a purchase!

5 out of 5 stars Could It Be Forever: The Greatest Hits - David Cassidy.......2007-02-01

Absolutely brilliant album from start to finish. Wonderful to revisit music from my teenage years. exactly as I remembered him.

5 out of 5 stars Plus & Minus + 5 stars.......2006-12-15

I know all those hard core PF and DC fans will be on this review, but the fact is...YES, another collection. I say keep them coming. Maybe someday they will include the unreleased PF songs as well as David's First Bell B-side to Cherish called All I Wanna Do Is Touch You and his last Bell B-side to If I Didn't Care called Frozen Noses. Neither have ever been released on LP or CD.

This collection gives an overall view of Cassidy & Partridge hits and most popular songs. Minus the hits & singles Doesn't Somebody Want To Be Wanted, David's least favorite track, as well as Am I Losing You, Friend And A Lover, Looking For a Good Time, Daydream and Please Please Me. I Am A Clown is the edited version and If I Didn't Care is the unedited version. Could It Be Forever sounds slightly different, but not sure why.

The sound quality is the best I have heard so far from any Partridge Family or David Cassidy CD! It gives a fatter and fuller feel as the original LP's do. Summer Days, One Night Stand, You Are Always On My Mind and Ricky's Tune some of the added tracks not usually found on previous collections.

The artwork is minimal and the inside info is skimpy. The fact that it has been remastered is what makes this a CD to have.

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars.......2007-02-25

I cant believe I found this cd, its awesome.
It has all the best 5* songs and it brings back the great dance beat.
They have a likeness to The Jacksons and DeBarge and yet still they hold their own.
All the songs a great and they still sound great today.

5 out of 5 stars 100% Satisfied.......2006-08-11

This album is great, Five Star is a group I grew up listening to in the 80's a must have. It came in my post right on time when I need some musical upliftment. Good packaging, great music what more can I ask for. Thank you, I recommend this seller and product to all the old school 80's fanatics like me. Cheers.

3 out of 5 stars 5 Star..........2005-10-28

I recently bought "5 Star - the greatest hits" just to "catch up" with the group. "Let me be the one" is definitely the best song on the collection! I must rate the rest of the material as "Okay." Three stars...I'm going to give this collection another listen...if their material grows on me...maybe I'll raise my rating (and change my review!)

5 out of 5 stars A real greatest hits album.......2004-11-03

Five star is a familygroup from England. Two brothers and three sisters who became popstars and had some great successes in the eighties, especially in England. All these songs were hits in England and a lot of them also in the Netherlands, where I come from; they were quite popular. Hits like All fall down, Let me be the one, Find the time, Rain or shine and The slightest touch are catchy tunes, which were played a lot in the clubs in '85/ '86 and '87. Five star still makes records (Eclipse 2001) and the family lives in the States since 1990. I am a fan since day one and will always stay a fan. Especially the leadsinger Denise has a superb voice. This album represents the best of their work, but do not forget to check their latest album, which is still of the same high quality.

4 out of 5 stars The Fixx - Decent Compilation.......2007-03-05

The Fixx are one of those bands that I never went out and bought any of their studio albums, but I always liked what I heard from them. I saw them open for The Moody Blues once and thought they put on a very good live show. This compilation is a decent overview of their career. It gets some criticism for including a live version of "Stand Or Fall" instead of the studio version and an alternate version of "Red Skies At Night". Personally I like both of the versions included here, but it is probably a disappointment for people who are looking for a true studio compilation. Slightly different versions of "Deeper And Deeper" as well as "Built For The Future" are also included here. The Fixx were kings of top 40 radio for about four years and then were dropped like a hot potato. I always thought they were a step above the average new wave bands of the day and this collection shows that they were a capable band who wrote catchy stuff. I always found it interesting that although they were a top 40 singles band, most of their lyrics were not your typical radio friendly stuff. You won't find any relationship related songs here, but more topical material dealing with world events and issues. That is one thing I always liked about The Fixx is because of this they did not really fit any mold. If you are looking for a decent overview of the band, this one is worth picking up. The Fixx still tour from time to time and have released several albums since their hey day.

5 out of 5 stars a must-have for eighties enjoyment.......2007-02-11

all the great Fixx songs...i only wish Stand or Fall was the studio version instead of a live version. otherwise this cd fully satisfies.

4 out of 5 stars Red Skies is NOT live on this album..........2006-06-03

Just to correct those that have said that "Red Skies" is live on this collection -- it's not. It is different from the original found on Shuttered Room; this one is a remix -- produced by Genesis and The Police collaborater Hugh Padgham. If you're like me, and only began to appreciate The Fixx after their heydays, you might actually like the newer version of "Red Skies" better than the album original. It's a bit tighter, more up tempo.

Purists will hate it, along with the live version of "Stand or Fall". Those longing for the true sound of The Fixx, the way they heard them back in the early 80's, I'd recommend the more recent "Ultimate" release.

4 out of 5 stars Get Your Fixx!! .......2005-05-04

I can honestly say I'd only heard the one "Big hit" song of The Fixx for many years "One Thing Leads to Another". A few years ago a new 80's station started on the radio here. I heard the songs "Red Skies (at night)" "Saved By Zero"(favorite song by them)"Stand or Fall" and "Secret Separation". Had no idea The Fixx did these songs. Pleasantly suprised by this I went out and bought this album.
While I believe the CD to be a great compilation of The Fixx's best work I'd agree with every reviewer before me in that the live versions of "Red Skies" and "Stand or Fall" weaken the CD. The original recordings are much better. The other songs however have great sound quality and are well worth the price. If your a big Fixx fan I suggest you buy this album. Also might want to pick up the album "Shuttered Room" to get the original recordings of "Red Skies" and "Stand or Fall"

3 out of 5 stars Not a good Fixx...........2005-01-10

Warning shot....the versions of "Stand Or Fall" and "Red Skies" are inferior live versions. This collection also does not include any tracks from albums after "Walkabout."

The "Ultimate Collection" has the studio versions from "Shuttered Room" and songs from 3 more albums, and is the better buy.

    4 out of 5 stars Good record..however..........2005-11-04

If U want Sublime's TRUE greatest hits, you need to pick up both "40 oz to freedom" & the self titled album! Otherwise, your settling for less...this album has a lot of classic sublime..but there is still more classic sh*t to be heard...just pick up the 2 records mentioned aND you'll be way more saticfied thaN With just buyin' this cut.

2 out of 5 stars yeah this isnt a good hits album..........2005-09-03

all of the songs on this album are very good, however it doesn't live up to standards. sublimes a much better band than this album shows. if your a casual fan, i would not recomoned this to start. instead, i'd recomend "40 oz. to Freedom" thats my personal favorite Sublime album. it may not have all the hits on it, but is much better than robbin the hood and self-titled. great songs, terrible compilation

2 out of 5 stars Hate Hate Hate.......2005-07-08

I think they put the wrong cd in the case because most of sublimes good stuff is missing. Weird. Buy 40oz to freedom or anything other than this cd if you do not already have them. It's has some good songs but false advertisement comes to mind. Hardcore sublimers may want it, but you never really have to open it.

3 out of 5 stars booooo, no wonder why it got deleted!.......2005-06-04

this is the most pathetic greatest hits album i have ever seen. i am the casual sublime listener, but i know alot more than 10 of there songs. for instance, they couldv've put april 29, 1992 (miami) on here, and even a few unreleased or live tracks as well. the track listing is mediocre at best, everyone knows wrong way, and what i got. even before i didnt know sublime i knew those 2 songs i just didnt know it was sublime who did them. well maybe im being a little harsh because this is a greatest hits disc and not a 'best of' collection. however if they put out a 'best of' collection they can add 20 songs and + because most of there lp's have that many songs anyway. still this is a good cd because sublime does have a lot of great hits and its nice to see most of them on one cd so u dont have to buy the rest of there cds.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Compilation.......2004-12-14

I enjoyed this CD as much as I have all the others recorded by Sublime. This CD gives a great look into their style, and has a variety of their best songs. If you're a new listener to Sublime, this is a perfect 1st album.

5 out of 5 stars Not for fans..........2006-04-20

If you don't have any Faithless albums then by all means get this before you spring for the full collection. It's a good sample of the wonder that is Faithless.

I have all their albums and an embarrassing number of singles, so I got this one in case any of the tracks were different. Sadly the only variation is that some of the tracks are shortened Radio Edits rather than the full track.

If you already have Reverence, Sunday 8pm, Outrospective and No Roots, then better spend the money on the "Why Go?" single import which has the brilliantly smooth Hoxton Whores remix.

5 out of 5 stars I continue to have faith in their ability to create great dance music.......2005-12-29

1997 was the year. "Insomnia" by Faithless had swept over the dance floor. The ensemble's unique echoic sound would last through their numerous albums, but always bringing in new elements to keep their musical proposal fresh. Unlike others that seem more meant to fulfill a contract, this Greatest Hits compilation does do them justice and presents the true best of their works. Almost nine years later, I hear the Monster Mix of "Insomnia" on this album, and it takes me back to the day. Definitely my faith in Faithless' ability to create great dance music is as strong today as ever.

    5 out of 5 stars Good collection.......2005-06-01

For sure, I must recommend to buy all the original albums including remixes, but this is because I love Faithless.
If you are not a Faithless fan, but you like electronic music, you must have this album. This compilation is very well done, you get the best and buying it you'll not be disappointed.
