Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Say Something Sweet to Your Reviewer.......2007-03-19

Staffors's voice has a creamy tonal beauty that make her singing immensely listenable. Her strength's as a singer are particularly evident in the many love song from the forties where the sultry yearning behind the lyrics and lush orchestration are a perfect medium for Stafford's lustrous tone and superb breath control. There is nothing forced or melodramatic in her approach to a song; she has none of the affectations common to many singers of the day and delivers a solid beautifully crafted performance on each piece. Frank Sinatra was one of her biggest fans and its not hard to hear why. My favourites? Autumn In New York; Walkin' My Baby; Haunted Heart; Georgia; Say Something Sweet to Your Sweetheart. There are some forgettable songs here that do no justice to Stafford's talent or the history of the popular song, but these are the exception. A great intro to an underated singer.

5 out of 5 stars Second ASV compilation of Jo's music.......2004-10-07

Some years ago, ASV released a single CD of Jo's music (Coming back like a song 25 hits 1941 - 1947), containing many of Jo's big hits of the forties. This set, although a double CD, is a companion volume to that collection. It avoids all the hits available on that collection but Jo had plenty of others. Here you will find more of Jo's hits from the forties, together with some of her early fifties hits from Columbia.

If you've already got the boxed set (Yes indeed) covering Jo's music on Capitol and you've also got the best compilation of Jo's fifties music (Columbia hits collection), you'll have most but not all of the tracks here and on the other ASV collection. Out of this world, Ivy and White Christmas are available on the single CD while Say something sweet to your sweetheart, Sometime and Goodnight Irene are available on this set. These tracks are omitted from Yes indeed, but as that box contains four CD's and is devoted entirely to her Capitol recordings, there are many more tracks on that set that aren't on the two ASV releases.

All the Columbia hits included here can be found on Columbia hits collection. As this set only covers the period up to 1952, it misses out some later hits including Make love to me, Thank you for calling and Suddenly there's a valley. Perhaps ASV plan to release another volume some day although I doubt it - 1952 is about as far as they normally go.

If you've already got the first ASV compilation, this is an ideal way to expand your collection of Jo's music. If you haven't got any of Jo's music, buying the two ASV compilations will give you most of her hits including all the essentials.

Dedicated Jo Stafford fans may wish to buy all the compilations I've mentioned, together with the rarities collection (Jo Stafford on Capitol) just to have everything available - there are tracks on each that aren't available elsewhere - but it would involve a lot of duplication. Between these five compilations, every solo hit that Jo had during her time with Capitol is included at least once. Some of her duet hits with Gordon MacRae are missing and there are still some of her later Columbia hits not available on CD.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great gems from musicals that dissapeared.......2004-11-30

Songs from 1987's "Smile" make this well worth the price. The previously unreleased material from the late, great Howard Ashman deserves to have it's moment in the spotlight.

Also, there's Judy Kuhn's beautiful performance on "Starfish", Christine Baranski's vampy turn on "Sherry".

Finally, there's" New Words" from "One, Two, Three, Four, Five". This show has been restaged, by small theatre groups, under the title "History Loves Company". "New Words" is by far the best number of this show and Liz Callaway's voice fills with love as she sings this lullaby.

For a consummate musical theatre fan who's heard it all, this disc is a refreshing look at what has been lost over the years.

3 out of 5 stars some gold mixed with dross.......2003-12-21

Some of these songs desrve to be unsung. But then you get a showstopper like Sherry and you wonder how could this show have flopped? That number alone makes this cd worth purchasing.I also enjoyed Marvin Hamlisch's toe tapping title song - Smile. There are also a few other lovely melodies which makes this cd a nice addition to a Broadway collection.

Thankyou

5 out of 5 stars like the finest of wines.......2004-12-26

This superb collection consists of songs recorded from the mid-eighties to the mid-nineties, and like fine wine, Engelbert sounding better than ever; his voice is a little deeper but not diminished in luster or range, with interpretations of some classic songs brimming over with soulful emotion.
There are three less familiar songs from Eng's '96 "After Dark" CD (tracks # 5, # 10, # 17), five that come from his collaboration with arranger/conductor Bebu Silvetti in the lush, spectacular '95 CD "Love Unchained" (tracks # 1, # 12, # 13, # 15 & # 16), and the rest of the nine tracks can be found in the mellow, jazzy "Collector's Edition" 2 CD set (also released as "An Evening With...").

Favorites include "Unchained Melody", with the final section taken in a high, full voice...with seemingly endless breath control...that is thrilling, the incredibly gentle "The Very Thought of You", the glorious melody of "Love is a Many Splendored Thing", and the country-flavored "There's No Song Like a Slow Song".
One can never have too much of Englebert, and this is another compilation of gorgeous music, sung to perfection, and is a little different because it does not contain any of the songs that made him a household name in the '60s and '70s.
The liner notes give the recording history of the songs, as to who originally performed them (5 were hits for Bing Crosby, 3 for Nat King Cole, etc) but no info on the Engelbert recordings.
The sound is good and total playing time is 60'30.

5 out of 5 stars A Collector's Item.......2007-03-09

This is a different voice than you hear on recordings of "The Three Tenors." Of course, it's his earlier years, but the light, lyrical quality of his voice is amazing. Thank goodness for recordings, and digital remastering. I love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars STUPENDOUS!!!!.......2005-06-20

I have a Carreras-recording of Tosca from 1980 and up till now I thought it was the ultimate recording of "Recondita armonia" and "E lucevan le stelle". I honestly thought that no one could sing these arias better. And in a way I'm right. The only one that did it was himself - a few years earlier.....(The two arias in this "golden years cd" are taken from a -76 recording of Tosca). And after listening to these songs I can't imagine that anyone dare say that he is/was the weakest of the three tenors. In my opinion he possesses something that the others don't. (I won't tell you what it is - listen and find out yourself). Even if his voice has changed over the years (and I mean changed, not declined..) something remains unchangeable and that is his ability to evoke emotions. No one can deliver a line like him. And that's something that's going to stay with him forever, because what makes his singing so special comes from within. It's not dependent on the quality of the voice. But in the songs on this cd his voice is pure gold.

Even though I like the whole album, some of the songs on the first cd (which consists of operatic arias) stand out to me - like "Una furtiva lagrima", "donna non vidi mai", "vesti la giubba" and "nessun dorma" (Sorry Pavarotti - José is way ahead of you interpreting this song. It's not enough to sing it on full blast....) Here's also the loveliest rendition of "Forse la soglio attinse". In 1975 the audience at La Scala in Milan went absolutely crazy after he had sung this aria. I have a recording from that night and it sounds as if they are standing on their seats, cheering and applauding. And it's almost like I want to do the same myself after listening to his singing on this album. And in the song "dein ist mein ganzes hertz" he makes me believe that his whole heart really is mine......In my opinion Carreras has the best rendition of this song ever. No one else comes even close to this one. And I mustn't forget his "che gelida manina" from La Bohême. I have the -79 recording it's taken from and it's the ultimate Bohême ever.

The second cd has a "lighter" repertoire with songs from composers like Tosti, Cardillo, Lara and others. My personal favourites here are "Core n'grato", "Ideale" and "Granada". In my opinion no one sings these songs like Carreras. Or rather - no one sings like Carreras. Period!

His singing will no doubt give you goosebumps all over and make your hair stand on end. If not, I bet you're either a Pavarotti or Domingo-fan....

5 out of 5 stars a great partial overview of an extraordinary career.......2005-04-09

Now a household name by being one of the Three Tenors alongside Pavarotti and Domingo, Carreras' finest recordings were actually done in the 1970s, when his voice had a brilliance and luster that few singers have equaled. Born in Spain in '46, Carreras was a child prodigy, and by his late 20s was a shining star in all the major opera houses. Tragically, in '87, he learned he had leukemia, a disease he battled and won, going on to greater fame than ever before.
Though his voice is powerful and full of beauty, those with keen ears will detect his voice losing a tiny bit of its magnificence starting in the early 80s, and one wonders if the stress and exhaustion of stardom contributed to this as well as to the illness, or whether it was because the seeds of leukemia were taking root.

CD One is the operatic disc, and the two most sublime cuts are both from '76, Puccini's "E lucevan le stelle" (Tosca), and Verdi's "Forse la scoglia attinse" (Un Ballo in Maschera). Another track I adore is the heavenly Lehar "Dein ist mein ganzes Herz" (Das Land des Lachelns), from 1978, and few have performed this popular piece with more loveliness.
CD Two is in a lighter vein, and starts with a stupendous rendition of Ariel Ramirez' "Kirie" (Misa Criolla), sung softly and with extraordinary tenderness and artistry.
There are lots of heavenly melodic Italian songs, like "O Sole Mio", and a few in English like the song made famous by Lanza (who according to the liner notes, inspired Carreras to be a singer when he saw "The Great Caruso" at the age of six) "Be My Love " (Brodszky/Cahn).
The foldout insert has complete track list info and liner notes, and mention must be made of the incredible, sensitive sepia portrait of this handsome singer on the cover. Total playing time for CD One is 75'32, and for CD Two 75'47.
A must for Carreras fans, and anyone who appreciates the finest in operatic voices.

5 out of 5 stars What a beauty!.......2005-01-13

This great double CD set shows us the true Carreras. All the great songs and arias are on this(although I would've liked to hear pourquoi me reveiller) and in pure Carreras style.
Some of the opera recordings are live, and that adds a lot to them. Both sides of the CDs have fantastic repetoire.
Definately a worthy buy!

5 out of 5 stars He answered my SOS - with his soul.......2004-02-07

I came upon the genius of Mr. Carrera quite accidentally. I was in Warsovie (Warsaw), Poland. My purse was stolen, so I lay miserable and penniless and alone in the home of my Ex, with a copy of the Vampire Chronicles and Dostoevsky's Notes from the Underground (only books in English). The maddening drone of the hydro-dam nearby moved me to turn on the radio to my favorite college station. I was no opera buff, so when they announced that they would cover some Enrique Caruso songs, I was panicked to find a station that I could relate to.

Jose Carrera covered the full gambit of Caruso's classics. They must've played him for 2 hours straight. I was mesmerized. I could have touched him and put his hand to my face, his voice was so close. He sang with such emotion and outcry that I wanted to take him into my arms and console him. "Damn" is all that I could verbalize, when the program ended.

I'm not into Jose Carrera singing pop tunes, but he completely blows me away when he's in his own element. I was never feeling the three tenors, and although I remember Pavarotti and our school taking us to the Met in the 80's, Jose Carrera, is an animal of an entirely different species. He's one of a few artists that I can only listen to on my Bose, all alone, to fully appreciate the gravity of talent.

        Album Description

"Analogue Smoque's deportment owes much to Dada, which positions it some 85 years late for lunch. The work's disjunct, shard-like character looks in significant measure to the manner in which it came together as a pastiche of youthful bits." Mike Silverton

A truly surrealistic pillow of a text/sound work, Analogue Smoque combinates poet and La Folia honcho Mike Silverton's epic poe(m) (with Mike recitating) and the sounds (both electronic and not) of Tom Hamilton and Al Margolis. Sounds combine and contrast, highlight and ignore, as Silverton's opus unfolds in all its glory.

Mike Silverton will only say that "At first blush, the alert listener detects a link between Analogue Smoque and Madam Blavatsky. The magi demur. Rather, they say, the text reveals its author's interest in cryptorchidistics, i.e., states of non-descent." Tom Hamilton has composed and performed electronic music for over 30 years. Rather than addressing traditional modes of presentation and observation, Hamilton prefers to explore interaction and simultaneity as aspects of "present-time listening" on both the performers' and listeners' parts. Al Margolis has been working with electronics/sounds since New Year's Day 1984. His work can best be described as "sound fingerpainting."

If you're looking to play the devil, the lower male range gives you an advantage, at least according to stage convention. But when it comes to the art of romance--unless you happen to be a certain promiscuous Don--a thrilling tenor voice is worth its weight in gold. This Pure Tenors compilation showcases the gleaming brilliance of this voice type in its romantic guise. The tenor--so to speak--of the selections ranges from Broadway fare and favorites such as "Love Is a Many-Splendoured Thing" to the fervent intensity of Puccini's Turandot (in the pulse-elevating closing number). Predictably, today's great tenor trinity--voice of gold Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo (in some very frisky moods), and the passionate José Carreras--gets by far the most representation. But of the huge world of other tenors out there, Universal at least gives a hint, with a vintage selection from the legendary Giuseppe di Stefano--a golden voice from the past very worth your while to seek out if you haven't yet discovered it. And, of course, pointing to today's contenders for the throne, there's an aria from Andrea Bocelli's recent Verdi compilation. When you listen to these voices, with their different ways of shading and coloring a phrase, you'll realize no two tenors sound alike. --Sarah Chin

What can I say, who doesn't love romance especially when sung in another romantic language??

        4 out of 5 stars Good mix.......2005-09-15

Good choice of opera classic and popular songs. Always masterful voices of Carreras, Domingo and Pavarotti.
Should buy for fans of these tenors.

        5 out of 5 stars A Great Cd.......2003-05-05

This is an excellent run-down of all the tenors who's names you hear floating around right now. For a newcomer to opera or perhaps a possible convert from the insidious Pop-opera this will be great entertainment. All that is missing is Roberto Alagna to make this a full showing of the "stereotypical" tenors of our times.
Carreras gets gyped a bit in this Cd. They only really allow him to sing from Broadway and west side story which is a shame. This is not where is vocal glory lies. Don't get me wrong he sounds great, but I want to hear E lucevan le stelle or one of the arias from Carmen he is so famous for. His Maria is the highlight if only to hear him sing a decent high-note after hearing so much of his diminished "three-tenors" cannon fodder.
Anyone interested in him should buy "Carreras the Golden Years."
Im glad Bocelli was included on this Cd to show how thin he sounds next to some of the big tenors of the generation. Ladies and Gentelemen Bocelli is not an opera singer. He has no training or stylistic integrity in the field. He is, however, a smashing pop artist and would encourage you to hear his "Sueno" for proof. La Donna E Mobile is one of his best aria's as he shows he has firm high notes but his voice is also noticably thinner than the rest.
Domingo sounds awesome in this Cd. His voice is splendid in the Lanzaesque reperatoire which he sings here. Go out and buy his Dvd's and opera recordings. Check out "The greatest hits of Placido Domingo" His Core N'Grato rivals Carreras's 1978 recordin of the song. He is in absolutley electrifying form.
Pav sounds okay. He is recorded here very late in his carrer. Nessun Dorma is fantastic even though his voice is not heavy enough fundamentally for the aria. His Mattinata is not that impressive. Don't get me wrong he is one of my favorite tenors, I just prefer him in the light italian opera repretoire. I would suggest The Pavarotti Gold Collection for further study on the big italian. His L'esir D'amore is as good as it gets.
Russel Watson is a bit of a paradox. I heard him on this Cd and thought he was the real thing. He sounds like a great verismo tenor on this cd in one of my favorite ( though slightly modified) arias. I say he is a paradox because I just recently watched his concert "Now is the Hour" on Pbs and he doesnt sound like that at all. His passagio is spread and there are visible signs of strain as well as tecnical problems. Where is the Watson who sang this Amor ti Vieta? Who knows? I do know I almost vomited when he talked his way through O Sole Mio in his "Now Is the Hour" saying "are you ready" each time before the famous Da Capo; but that is neither here nor there.
Di Stefano is also there as a welscome surprize. This is a tenor from the last generation of the likes of Corelli and Gedda. He is reasonably impressive singing Chitarra Romana considering the old-school recording tecniques.

Overall this is a good run-down of the tenors out there on the Pop/ Opera world stage. Have fun with it!

5 out of 5 stars Nice CD! Must have for Classic fan........2003-03-27

Nice CD! Must have for Classic fan.

3 out of 5 stars There are tenors, and then there are Italian tenors.......2001-05-30

Every once in a while I do my best to appreciate tenors,et.al.I should accept the fact that I have a proclivity for Italian tenors and not try to change that fact.I have followed Maestro Pavarotti for 25 years and am always enthralled by the voice.Great cuts on this CD.Andrea Bocelli is a never ending amazement to me.In 1994 I saw/heard him on a PBS Pavarotti and Friends telecast and have followed his progress, which has been astounding to me.He has such a tone to his voice,it gets inside of me.It is so full of emotion.Dame Kiri deserves plaudits as well as the others on this CD.However,I would not have included Mr. Watson in this company.Power alone does not make a tenor.Perhaps 10 years from now, after study and dedication he will have that elusive quality which makes tenors truly great.I warned you,I am biased ,I love Italian tenors.Overall, this is an enjoyable CD,it gives an opportunity to hear various tenor voices and decide for yourself what qualities you prefer in the voice itself. If you are just getting to know the tenor voice you will be listening to some of the best. There are many more out there for you to investigate and enjoy.
