southside johnny still has it.......2006-08-22
a good sound from the southside johnny band, can't wait to see them @ the end of the week!!!
Excellent Value for the money.......2006-08-07
If you're searching for Southside Johnny albums, you're going to definitely want the first 3, which are not really easily found these days in the US. The best-of is good, but you really owe it to yourself to hear the first 3 records, complete. Since the 3-fer box is out of print, you should pick this cd up (it's a UK import) and then go score a copy of Hearts of Stone (total s/b around $30 all-in) and you'll add three essential Jersey albums to your collection. They're must-hears for fans of Bruce, a testimony to Miami Steve's genius, songwriting & production chops and good taste, and SSJ and the Jukes ain't too shabby live either (if you get a chance to see them).....
A Jukes two-fer that deserves space on your CD rack!.......2005-04-09
Let's just say Bruce Springsteen was the other guy who helped contribute to the "Asbury sound". It always amazes me how many Springsteen fans know so little about Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes. That is truly a shame. These first two albums reissued on a single CD is a fine place to start for anybody yearning for some great rock & roll with one of the finest singers & a crack horn section to boot. Oh, the guest appearances are great too, Lee Dorsey & Ronnie Spector duet with Johnny on a couple of numbers. Springsteen & Van Zandt contribute heavily to the writing & arranging of these 1st two albums. Steven Van Zandt was then still a member of The Asbury Jukes before becoming a full-time E Streeter behind Bruce. The fact that Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes have not yet been considered for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is an injustice. Highly Recommended.......2004-09-10
Superb songwriting, soulful singing, and the band ROCKS! These are the first two albums of that great Jukes Triumvirate. I bought "This Time It's For Real" at the time of its release, and I still listen to it at least once a week. This music is like fine wine - it only gets better with age. If these don't move you to your soul, nothing will. . .
Music speaks for itself.......2004-05-14
If you are reading this, then you know the music itself is 5 stars. I beleive the liner notes are rather extensive than the originals, and possibly re-mastered. But c'mon, Amazon, the Asbury DUKES? It's the Asbury Jukes...this ain't Hazzard County.

Album Description
This album consists of one cantata, two suites and eight spirituals in choral settings by nationally acclaimed composer/arranger Alice Parker. The cantata "Listen, Lord" for solo contralto, chorus, and jazz combo sets the text of the opening prayer from "God's Trombones", James Weldon Johnson's imaginative recreation of sermons remembered from his youth.

Customer Reviews:
Southside's debut his best .......2006-03-03
Southside Johnny had been kicking around Asbury Park for anumber of years when he got the chance to record. He got a bunch of really good Springsteen and Lillte Steven songs and he had great guest artists in Lee Dorsey and especially Ronnie Spector, who is just great on the closer "You Mean So Much to Me". The title track and Springsteen's "The Fever" also very special.
Southside has done some good work since this but he has never concentrated so mush good work in one album. It's a very upbeat set of songs.
The Sound of South Jersey.......2005-09-19
If you like The Boss then you will like Southside. He is reallythe sound of south jersey.
Great to add to your collection.......2005-08-23
Wonderfully remastered digitally. Brings me back to his concerts from the 70s. Unique vocals, organ, lyrics, tempos. Gotta have it.
Southside's Debut Is Great.......2005-01-31
Southside Johnny's debut CD, I DON'T WANT TO GO HOME, is simply great. Combining the influences of the Memphis-Chicago-Muscle Shoals-St. Louis-New Orleans-Detroit-Philadelphia-Kansas City blues/R&B/rock & roll axis, fellow New Jerseyite Bruce Springsteen, doo-wop, and Van Morrison, the CD features a perfect blend of Van Zandt/Springsteen originals and R&B covers, plus such guests as Lee Dorsey and the Five Satins. The next two albums would be even better, but here, Southside is already in the big leagues.
AS GOOD AS I GETS.......2004-01-25
SSJ BRILLIANT. HORN SECTION EXCELLENT. MUSIC TO LIVE LIFE WITH. NO MORE TO BE SAID.

Kisses sweeter than wine.......2004-06-24
I caught a performance by Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes on late night television back in the mid 70's and was instantly enthralled. Watching that performance I couldn't imagine how they could miss, and I sat back and waited for them to explode. Somehow it managed to never happen, but that didn't stop me from enjoying these three albums when they came out and died with a whimper. Over the years I've made many a Jukes compilation, but this trio of albums always comprised the bulk of the selections. There was some good stuff to come later, but it never quite reached this level again. The band's rendition of the Springsteen penned "The Fever" made the Boss's version sound wheezy and asthmatic. Other killer performances in this set are This Time It's for Real, Without Love, Love on the Wrong Side of Town, Talk to Me, and Trapped Again. Don't get me wrong, those are just the cream. The rest of the crop is pretty tasty too.
JUKES HAT TRICK- YOU JUST DONT GET 'EM LIKE THIS, BABY!.......2002-08-16
THESE ARE THE FIRST, AND BEST OF THE JUKES CATALOG.
OH SURE, THERE ARE SOME OTHER GOODIES.....AT LEAST WE HAVE SHOES, BEEN A LONG TIME, AND SOME OF JOHNNYS SOLO STUFF.
BUT THE ESSENCE OF WHAT MADE THE JUKES THE WORLDS GREATEST BAR BAND IS FOUND OVER AND OVER AGAIN ON THESE FIRST THREE ALBUMS.
I DONT WANNA GO HOME, LITTLE GIRL SO FINE, HEARTS OF STONE, TRAPPED AGAIN, SOME THINGS JUST DONT CHANGE, AND THE GREAT JOB ORIGINAL DRUMMER KENNY PENTAFALO DOES ON CHECK MR POPEYE.
I SLOPPED A LOT OF BOOZE AND PLAYED A LOT OF GIGS ON THE JERSEY BAR SCENE BACK IN THE DAY. EVEN HAD PASTA DINNER WITH SOUTHSIDE, ED SCHOCKY, AND RONNIE SPECTOR AT TRAVILINGINIS RESTURANTE ON RT 49. THESE GUYS DIDNT JUST PLAY IT- THEY LIVED IT. SSJ AND TH AJ'S GAVE ALL US BAR BANDS HOPE THAT IF YOU JUST KEPT HACKING, SOMETHING GOOD WOULD COME OUT OF IT.
THANKS GUYS.
JOHNNY PROVANO
They got the fever...........2001-05-29
When Southside Johnny and his Jukes came roaring out of Asbury Park on the tail (some said coat tail) of Bruce Springsteen in 1976 I didn't expect much from them. Afterall, how many great bands could one tiny music scene produce. Well the answer is two great bands. "I Don't Want To Go Home',and "This Time It's For Real got massive turntable rotation at my digs during the second half of the seventies. Steve Van Zandt (E Streeter,Little Steven,The Sopranos, but you knew that) not only produced and played on these albums, he also contributed winning original songs to the eclectic mix of covers. On "I Don't Want To Go Home" the big winners are the title cut, Bruce's "Fever" and a duet with the late great Lee Dorsey on 'How Come You Treat Me So Bad' that is simply hilarious. The second album of this trio is not quite as seamless as the first but it contains more terrific Van Zandt tunes and some raucous collaborations with The Coasters, The Drifters, and the Five Satins. Sound fun? Fun! I never was able to truly embrace the third record as much as the first two. Produced by Juke guitarist Billy Rush it drops most of the humor and self effacement that made this band so attractive to me. Still they're terrific musicians and Johnny sings his heart out here, and as a part of the total package, "Hearts Of Stone" is more than welcome in my CD tray. To my ears they never surpassed this triad of records and this box set is a genorously priced gift to Southside fans everywhere. Get it and get the fever too.
This music is for real.......2000-01-09
A culmination of all the lust and loss ever sung by all the Jersey bar bands I've ever heard. Their sound is the best music to ever come out of New Jersey and that's saying alot. You'd swear you knew guys like them back in the neighborhood and here they are singing about people and times you grew up with. Raucous, bluesy, soulful, smart music with fabulous harmonies you can't help but sing along with. "Trapped Again" is my favorite Southside song, if not my favorite of all time. Good time music if ever there was.
one cliche "they don't make em like this anymore".......1999-09-14
I first turned onto Southside and the Jukes in the eighth grade (the only one of my peers of course) but I knew i'd found something special. this music has always served, to me, as a paradigm of what great music and a great band should sound like.
