This album, while being a new recording, will hold you spellbound. From the start you feel that the Mysterians have lost absolutely nothing over the years. If anything 96 tears is slightly better than the original. Cheree is phenomenal and there are superb covers of the Jaynettes '63 hit "Sally Go Round the Roses" and the Rolling Stones "Satisfaction".

It is strange however that having included a crackly vinyl transcript of ? and Co's very first single, that they could not do the same with the original version of the classic "96 Tears". Never mind, if you are too young to remember it you won't miss it after the version presented here.

? himself remains the epitome of rock attitude, maintaining that he was born on Mars, that he lived with dinosaurs, and that he will be singing '96 Tears' in the year 10,000.

With most faded 60s bands, that would be the end of the story. But a link-up with the Collectables record label produced one of the best revivals of recent years. Collectables is best-known for its huge catalogue of of reissues, mostly doo-wop, R&B and all kinds of 60s music. But when they discovered that the rights to the orignal Cameo label lay with ABKCO, after Allen Klein's takeover in 1967, they decided to fund an album of re-recordings. The sessions duly took place over four days in July 1997.

Such re-recordings are normally pale shadows of the originals, to be avoided at all costs, but ? & the Mysterians are the exception to the rule. The core original line-up of ?, Balderrama, Rodriguez, Martinez and Lugo quickly proved that they could still cut killer versions of their songs, often in one take. The 16 track album was supported by live dates that showed they were still one tight and rocking band. They were, and still are, everything that rock should be.

Album Description

Before she unleashed The Pandoras on an unsuspecting world, Paula Pierce was the lead guitarist/singer/songwriter in Action Now, a garage power pop band hailing from Southern California's San Gabriel Valley.

Using the original master tapes, thought lost for almost 20 years, the French-only "All Your Dreams" album has been mastered for CD for the first time by remastering genius Bill Inglot, who also originally produced seven of the studio tracks. Completing the story is "Try" from "Rodney On The ROQ, Vol. III" and a complete Action Now live show, mastered from the original two-track tape, rediscovered after 22 years.

This CD contains the original version of "Stop Pretending," the title song from The Pandoras' Rhino Records LP, along with a live version of "Anyone But You," later recorded for that same 1986 Pandoras LP. In all, this collection features 26 songs never before on CD, 25 songs never released in the United States and five previously unreleased Paula Pierce-penned tunes.

Playing alongside Paula and making the Action Now sound happen were Jim Schuster (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Mike Lawrence (bass, vocals) and Scott Hillman (drums). Also on the CD are Dennis Pash (harmonica) and Chris Bagarozzi (lead guitar).

It's great to finally hear what Action Now sound like. It was obviously a labor of love to get this out, and I appreciate the effort. Early garage pop from an era that pre-dated the Paisley Underground by maybe a year or two by pioneers that would include The Lyres, The Last, and Real Kids (and a host of others), Action Now also has a tinge of that period's sound lacing the overall 60's approach. Mostly male lead vocals, but you can hear Paula's growling vocals accompanying many of the songs. Reminds you of a force in music removed from this world at a far to early age. Nice addition of a live concert as well as an album's worth of recorded songs, and "Try" from Rodney Bingenheimer's "best of" album. An early, rawer version of "Stop Pretending" is an added bonus. There is a wealth of material here. Highly recommended for any fan of 60's or 80's garage, power pop, or the garage version of the Pandoras.

      10 CD's of beautiful pieces of classical music, digitally recorded for only 20 bucks sounds very good. I decided to buy this CD set because of very good price. But, what you will get for your money? Noting special, believe me! I was very disappointed with some performances, but sound quality of some tracks is even worst. Disc No. 6 is one of the most poorly recorded and engineered CD's I have ever heard. I can't believe that this CD is digitally recorded. So, forgot price and look somewhere else. I can recommend this CD box set to absolutely beginners only.

      Barry Banks is certainly a contender for one of the best tenors around. THis is a great example of coloratura and legato line which is very well executed in a rather booming tenor voice. I just saw Mr. Banks in "The Elixer of Love" and he was stupendous. This is a large tenor voce in the theatre which alas is difficult to capture in a studio recording...you have to take my word. THe translations are often odd as they generally are, but this recording is certainly worth having. (although I prefer in the original language)

      Mr. Banks has a "heroic lyric tenor" if there is such a category. His fast vibrato and power lend the voice excitement and attention getting presence. I was intrigued by him in his stunning appearance in the Rimsky-Korsakov "Le'Coq d'Or" DVD (a not-to-be-missed experience)-- he was a stand-out there there and I went looking for other things by him. This CD is treasurable in many ways. The repertoire is interesting and the duets add flavor to the whole. The only small complaint I have is that perhaps Mr. Banks lacks just the last bit of emotional connection in his singing. You won't go wrong getting this excellent CD.

        For those who enjoy a little dissonace in guitar pop, this EP is just the ticket. Fans of bands like Polvo, Helium, Television, and The Red Krayola will find a lot to like here.

        SushiRobo skillfully layers sparse and often bizzarre guitar blips and seasick washes of chords with a tight, no-nonsense rhythm section.

        The real strength of this CD lies in the songwriting though. Rick Roberts' greasy street carnival imagery is uncanny, and his melodies are instantly hummable.

        This is great stuff, and I'm hoping a full-length album is in the works soon.
