5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

a good sound from the southside johnny band, can't wait to see them @ the end of the week!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Value for the money.......2006-08-07

If you're searching for Southside Johnny albums, you're going to definitely want the first 3, which are not really easily found these days in the US. The best-of is good, but you really owe it to yourself to hear the first 3 records, complete. Since the 3-fer box is out of print, you should pick this cd up (it's a UK import) and then go score a copy of Hearts of Stone (total s/b around $30 all-in) and you'll add three essential Jersey albums to your collection. They're must-hears for fans of Bruce, a testimony to Miami Steve's genius, songwriting & production chops and good taste, and SSJ and the Jukes ain't too shabby live either (if you get a chance to see them).....

5 out of 5 stars A Jukes two-fer that deserves space on your CD rack!.......2005-04-09

Let's just say Bruce Springsteen was the other guy who helped contribute to the "Asbury sound". It always amazes me how many Springsteen fans know so little about Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes. That is truly a shame. These first two albums reissued on a single CD is a fine place to start for anybody yearning for some great rock & roll with one of the finest singers & a crack horn section to boot. Oh, the guest appearances are great too, Lee Dorsey & Ronnie Spector duet with Johnny on a couple of numbers. Springsteen & Van Zandt contribute heavily to the writing & arranging of these 1st two albums. Steven Van Zandt was then still a member of The Asbury Jukes before becoming a full-time E Streeter behind Bruce. The fact that Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes have not yet been considered for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is an injustice. For more info on Jukes CDs not available here-go to southside johnny.com. Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes are America's best kept secret.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended.......2004-09-10

Superb songwriting, soulful singing, and the band ROCKS! These are the first two albums of that great Jukes Triumvirate. I bought "This Time It's For Real" at the time of its release, and I still listen to it at least once a week. This music is like fine wine - it only gets better with age. If these don't move you to your soul, nothing will. . .

5 out of 5 stars Music speaks for itself.......2004-05-14

If you are reading this, then you know the music itself is 5 stars. I beleive the liner notes are rather extensive than the originals, and possibly re-mastered. But c'mon, Amazon, the Asbury DUKES? It's the Asbury Jukes...this ain't Hazzard County.

4 out of 5 stars Great compilation.......2002-05-10

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

1 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2001-12-15

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

5 out of 5 stars Southside Avoids The Sophmore Jinx.......2005-01-30

With THIS TIME IT'S FOR REAL, Southside Johnny not only avoids the sophmore jinx, but outdoes his exceptional debut album. This time, there are fewer cover versions and more Van Zandt/Springsteen compositions, but the influences derived from the Memphis-Chicago-Muscle Shoals-St. Louis-New Orleans-Detroit-Philadelphia-Kansas City blues/R&B/rock & roll axis are still highly in evidence. The title track is a song of high determination to succeed, whether at a relationship or even life itself; "Check Mr. Popeye" is a funny song that extols the nutritional value of spinach; and "Some Things Just Don't Change" is a heartfelt ballad expressing regret, sung so that it could be about a failed love, or even describe how I felt about my decision not to rejoin my old bowling league in 2002. The first and third songs I mentioned, along with a cover of Aretha Frankin's "Without Love", which says that even someone from a wealthy suburban area (e.g. Bethesda, MD; Cape Elizabeth, ME; Lake Forest Park, WA; Lake Oswego, OR) can still be poor if they don't have someone special in their lives, cut deepest. Overall, this is a great CD that just gets better with time.
