5 out of 5 stars classic music CD.......2007-06-27

The CD was well represented by the clips on the Amazon website and came in time for our event. We did have a problem with the charge but that was taken care of promptly. Great service.

4 out of 5 stars Good for beginners.......2007-02-15

It is an excellent collection of classical music. I would recommend this CD if you have a friend who don't like classical music, since it has the most beautiful overtures and portions of famous artists. If you are a Classic Music Savvy you probably will not be impressed by it, unless you want to play the CD as background music in a friends gathering.

All the best composers! Over an hour of music. A samble of the greatest pieces.

5 out of 5 stars Good selection.......2005-10-02

I bought this CD to use in my classroom as listening examples. I'm not just a super big fan of some of the performances, but they are all good and for the price you can't beat it. That's why I gave it 5 stars. It's worth more than it costs by far.

This is a who's-who of great pieces of music you have heard all of your life, and never knew the names and stories! I listened to it over and over in the car and had my own concert! A friend borrowed it to add music to his Home Movies and it was perfect!

5 out of 5 stars Good Music at a Great Price.......2004-03-06

I bought this CD mostly for "Entry of the Gladiators," which everyone will recognize as classic circus music. The performance on this CD (by Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops) is the best available version of Entry of the Gladiators. The rest of the CD offers mostly excerpts of classical music.

5 out of 5 stars You will like this!.......2004-02-19

I had purchased an abundance of the "Favorites" collection and some were better than others.

This CD is at the top of them all. They may be short, but not that short. Wondrous music.

I can almost guarantee that you will like this music.
Well worth the price!

3 out of 5 stars Good for the novice.......2002-06-08

The recordings on this disc are pretty good. However, the editors selected only the *loud* parts, as indicated by the title. I was pretty disappointed to find that the pieces are, in many cases, edited to reflect the most famous themes, etc, instead of including the whole work. In general, I would recommend this to the classical music novice, or someone who wants to expand their knowledge of classical music in general. Those who already are familiar with these pieces will probably feel gypped.

Album Description

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah decided not to wait the perfunctory two years in between records to release their sophomore effort "Some Loud Thunder," but to to release it as soon as it was ready. Eager to prove there's more to the band than just a business story, "Some Loud Thunder" demonstrates just how far this band has come since the release of their debut. This is not CYHSY Part II - this is a departure record, a record that will stand the test of time and critics alike.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Despite the consensus, actually a hair better than the last.......2007-07-05

The second album for the indie heroes from Brooklyn/Philadelphia was received rather tepidly by most critics and audiences...and I can't understand why. In fact, Some Loud Thunder is by far a more consistent and engaging effort than their self-titled debut. The only potential flaw is the lack of truly great individual songs; nothing on here approaches the greatness of "Details of the War" or "The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth." But there's also no "Clap Your Hands," either, even though some have complained about the so-called ugly distortion on the opener of this set (personally, I liked it as an intro quite a bit).

But who can resist the wonderful refrain lines of "Yankee Go Home," or the eccentric 60s pop of "Emily Jean Stock," or the goofy dance junk of "Satan Said Dance?" Apparently, more than I would have expected. Even the most oddball and offbeat moments have charm and style: "Arm and Hammer" is a positively wonderful little throwaway. True, the energy has waned a bit on this album, and the overall tone is more dark and atmospheric, but those are the sorts of changes that turn good singles bands into good album bands. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah will never be considered a singles band, but after the low points of their debut, it seems that they're now maturing towards more cohesive records in the future. Good for them.

Best cuts: "Yankee Go Home," "Emily Jean Stock," "Love Song No. 7," "Satan Said Dance," "Underwater (You and Me)," "Mama, Won't You Keep Those Castles in the Air and Burning," "Arm and Hammer," "Some Loud Thunder," "Goodbye to the Mother and the Cove"

5 out of 5 stars devoid of the Talking Heads and The Clean clichés........2007-06-28

Other than the (intentional) faux pas with the distorted first track, I prefer this CD to their first one. With the exception of the rapidly strummed guitar on "Satan Said Dance" it is devoid of the Talking Heads and The Clean clichés. This album has a folk feel to it (in the mode of Beirut) along with slightly more adventurous moments that shakes the overall slightly saccharin pop ambiance of the initial release.

3 out of 5 stars A step back........2007-05-16

Now that I've listened to this album a few more times I'd probably put it on par with the first one. I didn't like it much at first but after a few listens it really grew on me. I still hate the distortion and random noise that are present in a few of the songs but aside from that it's all good. Definitely sounds different than the first album, which is probably why I didn't like it initially, but it's still amazing nonetheless. I know it says 3 stars but if I could change to it 5 I would. Here's my original comments on the album:

If their first album earns a five star rating, and I think it does, then this second effort is nothing more than a three. It's not terrible, but it's simply not as good as their first album. The distortion sounds like absolute crap. I don't care if it was an artistic choice or whatever, the fact remains that it makes the song hard to listen to. It's noise not music. Then just when you get into the second song and think perhaps it was just a bunch of dicking around on the opening track they throw a bunch of noise into the instrumental portions of the song between the verses. It sounds like someone just randomly banging on a drum(and I'm sure that's exactly what it is). How they listened to this and thought it sounded good is beyond me.

But it's not all bad. Thankfully they didn't mess up the entire album with terrible "artistic choices". There's some good stuff on the album and anybody that was a fan of the first should find something to like here as well. Definitely pick it up if your a fan but don't expect to like it as much as the first album because you won't. It's just not as good.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2007-05-05

This album is brilliant. Yea, the sound is a little distorted/weird on the first song, but don't let that stop you--it's like listening to a far away radio station late at night. But other than that one song--which is actually a great song-- the sound is OK. These guys are brilliant. Don't shy away from this CD.

2 out of 5 stars Could have been so much better.......2007-04-21

Like most of the complaints here, mine centers around the production of the album. Some of the best tracks are absolutely ruined by distortion. And, not the cool kinda distortion you might find on a Neil Young album... but the kind that is just grinds on you more with every listen.

Otherwise good tracks like like Some Loud Thunder, Emily Jean Stock and Arm & Hammer are vitually unlistenable because of the production of them. Personally, I'm not a fan of the Flaming Lips-esque bleeps & blips that are scattered through "Satan Said Dance" either. But maybe you are.

On the upside, The album finishes strong with the last 3 tracks. "Yankee Go Home" & "Underwater (You & Me)" and the haunting "Five Easy Pieces". They showcase what the band is capable of.

If not for the (assuming intentional) lousy production, we'd have a pretty good album on our hands here.

5 out of 5 stars Back to business.......2007-07-12

After a lengthy absence from the recording scene Ultra Nate is back with a top notch album packed with everything that she does so well.

5 out of 5 stars Her Best CD so Far!.......2007-07-11

A stellar offering from Ultra Nate! This CD has already spawned the hits "Love's the Only Drug", "Freak On" and "Automatic". The video for "Automatic" has become a huge hit on YouTube!

Her best CD yet!

4 out of 5 stars "Tonight I may condone it".......2007-07-02

Only her fifth album in a 17-year career, Baltimore's Ultra Naté has never been in a hurry to put out material, and especially not clichéd R&B or by-the-numbers dance music (even if her upcoming high-octane cover of the Pointer Sisters' Automatic may have the whiff of an album-promoting sop to the mainstream about it, it's still a lot of fun - especially its campy, soft-porn video. But then I live in Europe, where censorship tends to concentrate more on violence).

I'm a bit biased, as Ultra has, for me, the most pleasing vocal on earth and I'd probably have snapped up each new release if they'd featured her singing the phonebook, or even Rod Stewart-style sell-out schmaltzfests, but I'd say Grime, Silk, Thunder is a welcome addition to her solid, high-quality output to date.

One thing you can say about this smokily-voiced chanteuse is that she's never been afraid to plow her own furrow, tackling a variety of musical styles, and maybe this is why so many impressively talented musicians have queued up to work with her over the years (D-Influence, Stonebridge, Nellee Hooper, Blaze, Dajae, Full Intention, Eric Kupper, Mood II Swing, N'Dea Davenport, etc etc).

I'd heard this was to be Ultra's "dancefloor album" (in the same way Madonna's last effort was hers), but, in common with each release from One Woman's Insanity onwards, she wraps her ever-maturing voice around a number of different moods - from the Philly-sounding Getaway (soaring guest vocals from Dajae) to Giorgio Moroder-style retro-disco in Love's the Only Drug. But her always compelling phrasing makes the slower, jazzy Feel Love the stand-out track for me, and its cleverly simple, positive existential lyric hooks you in. If you've heard club remixes by the likes of Liquid People, they don't really compare to the much deeper original featured here - it hits the kind of heights I'd hoped for from MAW's Nuyorican Soul project, but - like I said - DEEPER. Not so sure about the Sly and Robbie-style toasting on Slow Grind, but at least she tries it out. Star (It's Showtime) and Lethal Shot aren't really working for me so far, either, but maybe they'll grow on me, as it sometimes takes me a while to "get" Ultra's songs. But with the right remixes, Star could be massive, alright.

So, Ultra's not resting on her laurels (and I can't wait to hear her perfrom live again, next time she's in London), but she does tip a nod to her initial club hits, with a terrific re-working of early single Scandal, which stays true to the spirit of the Basement Boys-produced original, as well as a souped-up, extended cover of her underground deep house smash It's Over Now.

In fact, the inclusion of these, along with Automatic, last year's club hit Love's The Only Drug and dancefloor anthem Freak On may make some fans feel over-familiar with it already, but hopefully it'll help her notch up some well-deserved sales.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2007-06-24

Beautiful, Dancy, Sexy, Fresh, Powerful, Modern, Club-Hopping...it's what comes to mind when I play Ultra Nate's new album. Her music is fabulous and fills my room with perfect summer tunes. My ipod is pumping out the entire album, as well as my stereo at home. Got the CD in the mail a couple days ago and I must say it's just super. UN's voice is powerful and sexy. The songs have totally underestimated my expectations of the album meaning I was pleasantly surprised, track after track. There isn't one song that doesn't appeal to me.

My friend told me that the album contains lots of different styles of music, but, to me, it's mostly club-style and/or lounge. Speaking of lounge, track 1 is a definite lounge/ambient number. A perfect opener to a perfect album. The photos of UN are divine and totally decorate the booklet and packaging artwork. At first, I didn't like the front cover image cos it's very photoshopped, meaning it looks too screened and soft, as if it's not really a photo of her at all. Looks more like an airbrushed image because of the screened softness.

UN's voice reminds me very much of Simone Denny (Love Inc.) and a little bit of Kristine W. as well. I haven't heard anything of UN since buying her "Situation Critical" album in 1999 from a second hand music shop in some bargain bin. I never really cared for her music, other than her big 1998 hit "FREE". But now I truly love both that and this album very much and appreciate her big time. Track # 6 is a cover tune of 80's pop trio "The Pointer Sisters" classic hit "Automatic". Rearragned with UN's powerful voice and modern-day techno beats/sounds, I can't help but fall in love with the song all over again.

A true 2007 Clubfloor toe-tapping album, Grime/Silk/Thunder is surely going to be a winner when it's released here in our Canadian music stores. I bought my copy online as an import cos I sure as heck wasn't going to wait!

5 out of 5 stars Repackaged New Year's Concert 1984 with VPO, etc........2005-02-23

If I'm not mistaken, most of the pieces were recorded originally live during a 1984 New Year's Concert conducted by Lorin Maazel with the Vienna Philharmonic playing in its grand concert hall, the Musikverein. Maazel and the Vienna Philharmonic have had a longstanding relationship dating from the 1960's, and without question, this CD does rank among my favorite New Year's Concert performances (However, the most mesmerizing ones I've heard have been those with the late Carlos Kleiber and Nikolaus Harnoncourt conducting.) for the superb quality of the Vienna Philharmonic's playing. Maazel leads the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in some of the most popular works composed by the Strauss family, most notably Johann II Strauss' Tales from the Vienna Woods Waltz, Emperor Waltz, Pizzicato Polka, Blue Danube Waltz and his father's Radetzky March, which traditionally closes out the annual New Year's Concert. Fans of the Strauss family, Vienna Philharmonic and Lorin Maazel, will not be disappointed with this excellent two CD compilation.

5 out of 5 stars I am glad I bought this one.......2003-04-25

I listen to this cd to relax and it is so soothing. It starts with The blue Danube, which is my favorite. But the rest of the songs do not disapoint.

This is great recording,
I enjoy listening to it
veru much. This is a
compilation of all the
favorite waltzes by
the Strauss family, that
one might hear at a
New Year's eve concert
of the Vienna Philharmonic...
All waltzes and Polkas are
favorites of audiences everywhere
in the world...

5 out of 5 stars A gem!.......2001-10-29

Who else knows Strauss better than Viennese? I attest that no other orchestra in the world plays Strauss better than the Vienna Philharmonic. Their light sound is exactly what the composer wanted, and it really makes other clumsy, heavy attempts by some other orchestras like Berlin and Chicago seem pathetic.

As far as the content of these CDs go, they are fantastic. They have every waltz, march, and polko of Strauss II that you could possibly want, as well as a nice addition of "Radetzky March" by the composer's father. If you are looking for a Johann Strauss Jr. CD, get this one!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing truly Amazing.......2000-05-09

This 2 CD is amazing. It is great for plane rides and other things. I always listen to it at work. Allmost every song on this CD is beautiful and graceful. The blue danube is a classic and my personal favorite song on this album. Some of the songs are okay but none are bad. Overall this is an amazing 2 CD collection and it is worth every cent of your money . . .

In the late 1980s, Pink Floyd came roaring back with a decent studio album and an awesome stadium tour. Delicate Sound is a postcard from that tour that has the impossible task of capturing the spectacle of flying pigs and crashing beds. Also without the brood and bass of the departed Roger Waters, even a large backing band can't recreate the majesty of the original recording of "Shine on You Crazy Diamond." Still "On the Turning Away," from A Momentary Lapse of Reason, sounds better than the studio version and a smattering of Floyd's best cuts from The Wall and Darkside of Moon make this live album a decent collection. --Greg Emmanuel

3 out of 5 stars Sadly This First Ever Live Version Of Pink Floyd Fails To Live Up To The Standards Of Its Studio Albums.......2007-05-23

If you would ever like to hear Pink Floyd perform live, do not purchase this double live CD. The songs simply fail to live up to the standards set forth in their studio versions. This CD set was recorded during the band's 1987-88 Momentary Lapse Of Reason World Tour. There's also a video version of this concert only the set list is different. The recording basically highlights the songs from the 1987 release A Momentary Lapse Of Reason rather than the classic Floyd tracks we know and love. A number of well-known tracks is missing from this set such as Welcome To The Machine, Echoes, Brain Damage/Eclipse, Arnold Layne, See Emily Play, and Astronomy Domine. This was when there was competition between the remaining Floyd members and Roger Waters. Roger Waters sued the other three band members because he thought they were stealing the name he assumed he rightfully owned. Roger released a solo album titled Radio KAOS and subsequently toured in support of that record. But the venues he was playing in weren't selling as fast as those of his former bandmates. Competition is one word used to describe the history of Pink Floyd and has been a common theme in the band's music. But when the smoked cleared, the three-member team of David Gilmour, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright simply ran circles around the one-man army of Roger Waters.

5 out of 5 stars Delicate Sounds of Thunder In My Head Phones All The Time.......2007-03-27

All I am going to say is that I listened to this cd one day all day long for about 12 hours over and over...both discs..no skipping songs. For three months I listened to it at night for two sessions of each discs .... that is a lot of Floyd. If there is one cd that I have listened to more than any other, this is it. I have worn one out, I am working on the second and I have a spare still unwrapped ...... this is the cd of all cds..for Joliet Jayke The Bluze Brother .... if it isn't blues then why do I listen to it so much? Well I dig a lot of musical genres and The Brother doesn't have to just dig the blues.... being in Joliet so long ... I got use to a lot ...... so this is my cd ...now no more questions ... buy it ... man IT IS A LIVE PERFORMANCE ....... oh so good ..... order now you hear.

5 out of 5 stars Great live CD from Pink Floyd.......2007-03-05

I cannot understand how can someone rate this cd as a one star...
This was a great concert, I was there in the first row, it was simply amazing. You have the best of "Momentary lapse" in live version plus some great classics from Pink Floyd in the 70's
Of course, Roger Waters is missing and he was the spirit of the band but you have to admit that a band can still offer great versions without his bass player. Don't get me wrong, I prefer Pink Floyd with Roger in the band. I am a huge fan of Roger Waters and I have great respect for the man and his work, but David also was a great contribution in the sound and he does a very good job with this live set. My only complaint is for two great moment of the concert that has not been included, these are "Great gig in the sky" and "Echoes", yes "Echoes" was the opening track for this concert, those who were there surely remember !

5 out of 5 stars Amazing version of Comfortably Numb.......2006-12-29

Gilmour nails the solo on Comfortably Numb in such a way that left me speechless the first time I heard it. There are some pedestrian versions of other classic PF songs and great mistakes like Sorrow, the worst Floyd song ever - well, maybe not as bad as The Trial from the wall but really awful. But this is mostly a very good live cd. Nothing compares to the classic line up that included Roger Waters but seeing as how Waters opted to become impossible to work with I think the rest of the band carried on well.

5 out of 5 stars FLOYD AT ITS BEST!.......2006-11-10

Having been to the live performance of this album, I can honestly state it is fabulous! Have enjoyed it for years; this is my second copy. It holds many of the classics; a shame the techno show isn't on it (that was absolutely incredible) but honestly it is exactly what I want to hear when listening to Pink Floyd. The best as they always are! They couldn't be more perfect. Their precision is on target and the blend is complimentary.

One of the many oddities of Bob Dylan's long and unruly career has been the rather cursory recording treatment given his stint as ringleader of the Rolling Thunder Revue. It's a shortcoming that's rectified with the release of Live 1975. Prior to the appearance of this two-disc collection, Rolling Thunder's eclectic road show was chronicled only in the infrequently screened, Dylan-directed Renaldo & Clara film and the bafflingly brief and one-note 1976 live set, Hard Rain. In contrast to its predecessor, this set, culled from four appearances made in November and December of '75, captures the breadth and subtleties of Dylan's Rolling Thunder performances. "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here with You," formerly a coda from Nashville Skyline, is given a rather incongruous bite here, while "It Ain't Me, Babe" is colored brightly by multi-instrumentalist David Mansfield along with erstwhile David Bowie guitarist Mick Ronson, the sparkplug of the gratifyingly ragtag group that coalesced on short notice. Solo acoustic performances weave through caterwauling full-band treatments of songs old ("The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll) and new ("Hurricane" and four other selections from Desire, which wouldn't hit the racks until early '76). While the contributions of a number of caravan cohorts and guests are left out, Joan Baez shares the spotlight with Dylan on four numbers, most notably on the rarity "Mama, You Been on My Mind" and the traditional "The Water Is Wide." But despite its cavalcade trappings, it was Dylan's show, and this collection demonstrates finally just how close to his '60s peak the '70s Dylan was. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars Dylan is king!.......2007-03-09

These discs have been in my cd player since I purchased them a month ago. Dylan's painted face allows him to be more diverse. It has songs that feature just Dylan and his guitar and others with his stellar band. For any Dylan fan interested in the bootleg series, this is a great starting point. I have several others in teh bootleg series, but few are as fun as this one. He just rocks!

3 out of 5 stars perhaps lower expectations are in order.......2007-02-15

Some of you are not going to like this review, but buyers will need some candor here. Dylan really is great, and his often great work in the 1970s is generally underappreciated. But this live set is not the place to learn to love Dylan. If you're curious about this title, my recommendation is go pick up his studio recordings of the mid- to late-1970s, beginning with the remastered titles. These are lovely, sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes groovy, and often superb. If you already have these, then, if you choose to get this title, you might set your expectations a little lower.

The main problem with Live 1975, as a reviewer below notes, is the singing--or, as one might better say, the bellowing. Dylan has one of rock's great voices and in his studio recordings, including his studio recordings of the 1970s, he sings with astounding emotional authority (where does he get that, one wonders--how does anyone get that?!). In these Live 1975 tracks, however, Dylan is out of voice, bellowing either to be heard or else to "voluminate" in lieu of giving a more emotionally nuanced vocal performance. This is not an uncommon failing of concert recordings, but the present case is quite pronounced and I agree with the reviewer below that it seriously taints the enjoyment of these disks.

I may as well go on to note that the sound of the band is quite dense here. I think it's not a performance problem or an engineering problem, but one of arrangement: there are too many instruments crowding the middle range, so it sounds a bit like an undifferentiated wall of sound. Again, rather characteristic of the 1970s live sound, but rarely the case with Dylan's studio recordings.

In short, if you're curious about Dylan in the 1970s, there are better places to look. My favorite of the Live albums is the 1964 one.

5 out of 5 stars This album rocks!.......2007-01-18

Without a doubt one of Dylans best recordings. I was blown away hearing this for the first time, and the twentieth for that matter. This album was just recently released and is a must have for any Dylan fan. If you're looking for a gift for a Dylan fan this is it. Most fans have the popular titles, Blood on the Tracks, Route 66 Revisited, etc. but there's a good chance they don't have this title yet. Guaranteed not to disappoint.

5 out of 5 stars Another classic from the Bootleg Series with some essential takes.......2007-01-12

The Rolling Thunder Review live collection is a close second to Live 1966 as the most essential live Dylan album ever released. Throughout these recordings, a revitalized and energetic Dylan hollers out his new and old classics to a rambunctious crowd of random people (the show traveled like a circus and had little to no publicity) and reinvents many of his old songs along the way.

This series of shows, like many of Dylan's great post-'65 concerts, features a combination of hard-rocking band numbers and solo acoustic songs. He's got a great band, too, with several guitarists, a tight rhythm section, a violin, and even a pedal steel guitar. With this rocking ensemble he reworks several classics into hard rocking barnstormers. "It Ain't Me Babe" and "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" groove at quick paces and sound almost unrecognizable from their folky original versions. "It Takes a Lot to Laugh" and "Just Like A Woman" are transformed from their delicate studio incarnations to anthemic rockers. Likewise, Dylan's new material (soon to be recorded in the studio as Desire) rocks hardest of all. The versions of "Hurricane" and "Isis" recorded here put the studio versions to shame, performed with fire and energy here that makes these versions the essential recordings.

Some of the album's best moments are the acoustic tunes. The recent hits "Tangled Up In Blue" and "Simple Twist of Fate" sound great, and duets with Joan Baez like "The Water is Wide" channel Dylan's folk past while at the same time remaining firmly rooted in where he was at that moment.

The Rolling Thunder Revue presents Dylan in one of his most daring and original endeavors, and the excellent liner notes tell the story quite well. This collection contains a great selection of classics as well as some great songs that are under-represented in Dylan's live catalog ("The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carrol"). It's a wild ride and a rewarding listen that I heartily recommend.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS!!!!.......2006-12-06

I absolutely love this double album. Growing up I owned a bootleg of the rolling thunder revue. Unfortunatly it got lost, however this cd did make up for it. The re-working of "it ain't me babe" is great, and the Joan Baez duo of "mama you've been on my mind" is really good with the country/rocking feel. My one slight problem with this is that "NEVER LET ME GO" was left off...that is not cool

Though the title describes the contents of the latest release by the veteran mandolin virtuoso and his crack band, it hardly suggests how far this musical interplay extends beyond bluegrass convention. The soaring strings of "Crossing the Briney" suggest the soundtrack to an imaginary movie, while "Going to Richmond" and "Goin' to the Ceili" both springboard from Irish reels as well. There's a clarinet break in the jazzy "Gallatin Rag," and accordion graces a couple of the other tracks. Skaggs pays tribute to a couple of other bluegrass progressives in "Missing Vassar" (in homage to the late Clements) and "Dawg's Breath" (for David Grisman). Though all of the musicians get ample opportunity to showcase their chops, what's most impressive is the cohesiveness of the ensemble, the way they serve the music and support each other instead of simply showing off. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars Ricky and Thunder Bring Blue Lightening.......2007-05-30

I have gotten hooked on bluegrass - it took one live concert with Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky at One World Theater here in Austin. This was a year ago and I now have an entire collection of new grass (and some old). But, no one is better than Ricky and his elite troop of instrumental talents. They produce the tightest sound I've ever heard. And, while I love Ricky's vocal work and harmonies, there is nothing more purely bluegrass than his instrumentals. This CD is a winner - every track delivers bluegrass thunder and lightening.

5 out of 5 stars The most fun listening in a long time........2007-04-02

It seems I've been buying a lot of CD's lately for just one or two worthwhile tunes on the whole CD. This one was different.
I don't think there was a throwaway cut on the whole thing.
I haven't had this much enjoyable listening on one CD in a long, long time.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding music mix.......2007-02-08

This is a truly beautifully composited CD with a very eclectic mixture of musical styles and a **VERY** high level of musicianship. Thanks, Ricky... this is a wonderful CD that I can listen to many times without ever tiring of its freshness!

5 out of 5 stars Great Music by Talented Instrumentalists.......2007-01-24

This is my first and only venture so far into bluegrass. Attracted by watching Skaggs Christmas show, decided to venture further by buying one of his CD's. Taking chance on this latest of instrumental offering, not disappointed at all.

In fact, I find myself listening often, and liking more and more each of the eleven offerings. Doesn't matter to me if not all is pure bluegrass, enjoy the accordian, clarinet, strings, etc. The blues rag song is terrific as well as the Celtic sounding "Crossing the Briney."

These are certainly fine musicians on their instruments who play wonderfully together, with their turns at jamming, or whatever it's called in bluegrass. In any case, they've got a new fan.

5 out of 5 stars A tasteful tune set with several interpretive twists.......2006-12-25

Playing Time - 47:32 -- I assumed that all eleven of these instrumentals were written by Ricky Skaggs because liner notes didn't provide tune credits. A little info from the label's publicist indicated that nine are new compositions by multiple Grammy award-winner Skaggs. Also, the CD jacket for this band's first-ever all-instrumental project has the entire seven-piece band on the cover, but a few of the regular members appear to be missing in the musical mix. Bios for Darrin Vincent and Paul Brewster are provided, but I don't see them listed in the credits. We do hear Ricky Skaggs (guitar, clawhammer banjo, mandolin, percussion), Jim Mills (banjo), Cody Kilby (guitar), Andy Leftwich (fiddle) and Mark Fain (bass). Guests include Jeff Taylor (accordion, whistle), Andy Statman (clarinet), and the Nashville String Machine with orchestration by Jim Gray on one cut.

No one can doubt the astonishing fluency with which these string practitioners speak. While they have a strong preference for moderate-tempo'ed offerings, they manage to create an eclectic state of musical mind with tastes of old-time, Celtic, bluegrass, Dawg, blues, jazz and classical idioms. Green hues of the Land of the Shamrock color compositions like "Going to Richmond" and "Goin to the Ceili." If a fusion of Celtic and Classical sounds are your cup o' tea, listen to the embellished brogue provided by the Nashville String Machine on "Crossing the Briney." With the band "playing their thoughts" in a manner similar to how fiddler Vassar Clements used to, "Missing Vassar" establishes a hillbilly jazz groove based on a recurring lick that honors that musical philosopher. With a copious amount of respect for another mandolinist (David Grisman), Ricky Skaggs and the boys lay a hot little tune, "Dawg's Breath," on us. The melody inhales and exhales with precision, bounce and pizzazz. When "Gallatin Rag" begins, as on a few others, we clearly hear the only minimal shortcoming in this album's music - some distraction caused by Ricky's pick on his fingerboard. Statman embellishes that offering with some euphonious clarinet. In Statman's hands, it becomes clear why the instrument was once affectionately called the "hot licorice stick" among swing musicians in the 1930s and 40s.

All in all, this album is a tasteful tune set with several interpretive twists along the way. Performed by exceptional musicians, the composite is a product that would make Bill Monroe proud. They don't betray their bluegrass pedigree. Rather, their adventurous vision provides a treasure trove of unique tunes. I'd like to see some music notation and/or tablature for them so I can learn a few favorites. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

5 out of 5 stars One of the World's Most gifted Singer /Songwriters, who happens to be a Scot!.......2006-09-29

Once again Dougie gives us another collection of songs which sparkle!
With not a dud in the bunch, the listener roams a wide range of stories, which can inspire, relax, invigorate, challenge...
Production and instrumentation is sharp and clean, with Dougie's voice as strong as ever. Highly recommended for all who love a good song which says something, unlike the throwaway rubbish mostly seen in the record shops. While it is a crime that Dougie isn't a monster star, if you are here, you are in the know and the better for it; for his (music) is for the discerning music lover, simple yet complex, not flash but...Dougie is truly one of the world's most gifted singer-songwriters, who happens to write in the celtic folk rock vein. Enjoy this new one!
Just saw him last night and live is where he is really in his element! The man & his guitar - solo, interacting with the crowd and making everyone have a great night!
Go see him soon if you never have and if you have, he is still one of the best.
Cheers!

5 out of 5 stars Another gift from a gifted musician.......2006-03-30

Dougie MacLean's newest CD is wonderful, a true mixture of tunes which personify the man's huge talent. I would give it 10 stars if I could. Any fan of Dougie's will be pleased with this new CD. It is all Dougie, but not at all like his previous work. This CD offers a fresh approach to his music. From the tractor on Strathmore to the sorrows heard in Song For Johnny, it is a brilliant collection. If you keep up to date with his website, you know how wide this artist's fan base is, from six to ninety-six, people are drawn to the man's music.
For those who aren't familiar with Dougie's distinctive sound, just take a moment and listen to the clips provided. At times wistful, at times upbeat, Dougie's lyrics are always thoughtful and thought provoking. His music is indeed Celtic but it speaks of universal ideas.

5 out of 5 stars Best Ever Album by Dougie MacLean!.......2006-02-28

Having enjoyed his music for a few years now I'm so glad to have bought "Inside the Thunder" which ranks already with my all time favourites...right up there alongside Jackson Brown's "Late for the Sky", Joni Mitchells "Blue", Van Morrison's "Moondance" and Beth Orton's "Trailer Park"! The song lyrics are thoughtfully profound and yet beautifully poetic and the arrangement always fits the lyric perfectly...ranging from wonderfully layered rhythmic tracks with atmospheric and accomplished instrumental solos to simple, perfect acoustic guitar with vocal. Dougie MacLean's voice is so distinctive and positively addictive and this album is the man at his best!

The person who sang O Mio Babbino Caro is Carmen Monarcha. Do a search for her on YouTube; she's really fantastic!

Anyway, I saw Andre Rieu on a PBS special on television and it looked like such an awesome, high-energy concert! The CD is not so exciting, but it is worth buying just for that beautiful aria.

5 out of 5 stars Live in Dublin.......2006-07-05

This concert is magnificent in its energy and in the great performances by Andre Rieu and the Johann Stauss orchestra. I watch it when I need lifting up. I love the audience interaction which makes me feel as if I'm there in person.

5 out of 5 stars Live audience is great........2006-05-03

This has to be one of Andre's best. The live audience adds much to the music being played. I wish I had been there for the performance.
