4 out of 5 stars As an Aussie I Think...........2006-06-07

Iva Davies is a genius!Crazy is awesome, Nothin too serious is just one of those geniune Aussie rockers that has nothin to do with anything but a good time,Electric Blue is just pure pop escapism at it's best. Need a time line? See Aussie Crawl,Cold Chisel,INXS etc. But for pure enjoyment after 15 years? Put Iva Davies on and turn it up

4 out of 5 stars Remastered or tampered with??.......2006-04-07

I first heard the Man Of Colours album in the late eighties and fell in love with it. It was never off my walkman and as soon as I got a CD player it was one of my first purchases. I have to say however that I'm a little disappointed with this remastered release.

The version of 'Crazy' is the single version and as such is shorter. The song 'Electric Blue' has been subtly tampered with, with the sound of the background synthesizers and some of the songs arrangement, (i.e.- going into the first chorus it used to say 'In those eyes', now it says 'I just freeze'). I now have two versions on my digital music player, the original and the remastered.

This album I would normally give 5 stars, but I'm giving this remastered version just four. Remastering in my opinion is about cleaning up the sound and removing background noise, leaving a sharper clearer sound. I have the greatest of respect for Iva Davies and his work, but an album should be left untouched once it's in the public domain.

4 out of 5 stars music to drive around late at night to...seriously.......2006-03-15

Easily their strongest album since the Flowers' debut, Man of Colours was to become Icehouse's commercial and creative high point. Had you seen them back in the day, you may remember the ladies swooning for frontman Iva Davies. Beyond the rock star good looks, he is a talented songwriter who, as the album title suggests, can paint a vivid picture with simple words.

Like much of Icehouse's work, the overall feel of the record is somewhat moody and melancholy, but with hints of optimism. The melodies are consistently catchy and moments of pure pop abound throughout. "My Obsession" is a slice of radio-ready pop heaven about being in denial over lost love. The album tracks reveal even deeper treasure, from up-tempo rocker "Nothing Too Serious" to the neo-Western setting of "Heartbreak Kid". Man of Colours has an almost voyeuristic feel, as if walking downtown from window to window, peering in on the characters inside and getting a different story each time - good, bad and ugly - then hopping in the car on a warm, overcast night and going for a slow drive with the top down.

Time has not necessarily been kind to the production here. In particular, cheesy synths and the big, echoey snare sound can ocassionally be distracting and place the album firmly in the 80's, dating it somewhat. But beyond those minor missteps, the record remains as enjoyable a listen today as it did in 1987.

For those familiar with the original U.S. version of this album, you'll notice a few differences on this imported reissue. Firstly, the remastering is superb and very warm-sounding, revealing depth in fidelity not heard when this album was first issued on CD early in the digital age. "Crazy" is present in its shorter, single remix, and "Electric Blue" is likewise a slightly different mix (possibly also a single remix). Two of the bonus tracks come from 1989's Great Southern Land and were exclusive to that compilation, now out of print, so it's nice they included them here. Some of the relevant b-sides are also present but it would have been more rewarding to round up all of the stray, long-lost b-sides rather than including mostly boring, extended mixes of the album's biggest hits.

If you haven't heard this album in years or are looking for an entry into romantic pop, this is an excellent starting point.

5 out of 5 stars Icehouse--way too underrated.......2006-01-14

Oh, 1987, not a happy time in my life, but there was Man of
Colours, and it seemed that listening to it helped me believe
that joy and happiness were still out there. It is a great
CD, Heartbreak Kid, Man of Colours, My Obsession, songs
that still sound sweet to my ear these many years later. Lucky
Australia, you can claim Iva Davies as your own.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic. You'll be a hero to your kids and the other parents you know........2007-06-19

It's unbelievable this collection is only in import! The whole disc is a real pleasure to listen to and some songs (Snow Patrol's "I am an Astronaut" and Belle and Sebastian's "Monkeys Are Breaking out the Zoo") are instant kid-friendly classics. You may not know all of the artists but it makes for a very well rounded collection for all age groups to enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars For parents who are tired of Raffie.......2007-03-22

Your kids want to hear "Sharon, Lois and Bram" AGAIN, and you want to put on "Pulp"...the compromise is "Colours are Brighter". The whole family gets to rock it out in the living room to the likes of "The Flaming Lips" and "Franz Ferdinand". Our favouite tune is one by "The Barcelona Pavilion", a catchy little ditty called "Tidy Up Tidy Up (put it away!)" that makes even the most onerous task of putting toys back in the toy box, or making the bed, a real hoot. Highly recommended by our little tribe, and even if you haven't got one yet, you will still love some of these rare little gems done by some of today's best bands.

4 out of 5 stars mostly very good.......2007-02-10

5 out of 5 stars I grew up on this album.......2007-07-13

This odd blend of Nu Wave and quirkiness made this album, fun, memorable and fun to sing and jerk to. It was one of my favorite 80's albums and to this day, is a great one for me!

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Collection.......2007-01-15

I love this album and believe this to be the highpoint of their career- so many good songs on here and each stands alone. The only disappointment is that they didn't recreate the beautiful laser-etched hologram design from the vinyl LP. But oh well, at least this is on cd. Check out the Crowded House catalog for more Finntastic music.

5 out of 5 stars Pre MTV.......2005-11-17

The first time I heard - and saw -- "I Got You" was when I was in the 9th grade before MTV. Every Friday night, PBS would show 30 minutes of music videos on a program that I cant recall the name of. However, Split Enz "I Got You" was shown perhaps 6 Fridays in-a-row and it was awesome. At a time when I was just getting turned on to the likes of Devo, Kraftwerk, Misex, et.al., this song and group was transforming and just plain cool to a 14 year old kid. A lot of fun and so many great memories.

5 out of 5 stars Best Pop Album of the 80's.......2005-09-09

For pure Pop pleasure this album just can't be beat. Everybody knows 'I Got You' but what about the manic fun of 'Shark Attack', the Schoolboy indignity of 'What's the matter with you' the slushy sentimentality of 'I Hope I Never', the hilariously self-pitying 'Nobody Takes me Seriously' the beautifully smooth and melancholy heartbreak of 'Missing Person' & the utterly fantastic instrumental ending of 'The Choral Sea'. Even though I have the best of Split Enz 'Spellbound' on CD I still need to grab this CD soon just for the 5 tracks missing off the greatest hits compilation, that's how good it is. For now I'm relying on my laser etched vinyl copy (ooh! Laser etched!). This album works on its own merits. It's a beautifully cohesive album. Beautifully observed Pop lyrics with wonderful sweeping synths and lovely piano work from Eddie Rayner. I saw them live in London back in 81 & it was one of the top 5 live concerts I ever saw in my life. These guys could deliver and this album is their opus. Time & Tide coming in 2nd I'd say. To end with, if you want to feel good this disc/cd makes a great pick-me-up!

4 out of 5 stars Great Album!.......2003-02-10

Split Enz is certainly a major group that influenced many later artist. True Colours the album was also innovative. The original LP featured a laser etched design which looked cool on the turntable! The music is quite good. Tunes such as Shark Attack, I Got You, Double Happy, are clear progressive new wave, and a look at music, to at least where many thought is was headed in the 1980's. True Colours is a true gem!

At first glance, it may seem that Toronto's Sadies have merely stood pat with their trademark blend of psychedelic country and twangy surf rock. But theirs has been a sly evolution, and Favourite Colours, their fifth full-length (not including various collaborations), finds them masterfully honing and building on their core sound. There's an emerging depth and pensiveness to their songwriting, a growing sense of spirituality and drama. The imagery is grand and vivid, seemingly drifting from utopian to apocalyptic. The heart of the album is a three-part suite (broken up by a dense, cinematic instrumental) that perfectly exemplifies the Sadies' deft balance of the ominous and the uplifting. The gentle steel and delicate acoustic strumming of "1000 Cities Falling (Part 1)" gives way to the trippy, atmospheric "Song of the Chief Musician (Part 2)" before culminating with the bright, sunny, 12-string-driven "Why Be So Curious? (Part 3)" with its refrain: "why be so curious when nobody knows the truth?" In this balance between tension and consolation one can hear echoes of '60s "cosmic cowboys" the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, and Flying Burrito Brothers. Exclusive company indeed, but with their sharp, fluid playing and broadening lyrical and musical scope, the Sadies are fast earning these comparisons. --Marc Greilsamer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Planetary Observations: In Orbit with The Sadies.......2007-07-01

By now you know they're Canadian and if you don't, then the fact that they spell `Favorite' and `Colors' with a "u" should give you a clue. On their fifth full length album, Toronto's cosmic cowboys serve up their customary combination of psychedelic country-rock instrumentals and songs with dark and brooding lyrics. "Favourite Colours" opens with "Northumberland West", an instrumental that culls and blends Byrds and Outlaws chords. The Sadies then get right to the point of their observation in the next three songs, being that the world is in pretty bad shape what with global terrorism, unending regional wars and impending ecological disaster. That the Byrds influence is strongest on "Favourite Colours" adds sonic context to the consciousness-raising warnings embedded in these songs. A highlight is "Why Be So Curious (Part 3)", which borrows heavily not only from Blue Rodeo's 2002 tune "Already Undone" but also from the Seekers' electric folk-rock. Early Pink Floyd can also be heard in "As Much As Such". Robyn Hitchcock and Blue Rodeo's Greg Keelor add guest vocals to songs that wouldn't seem out of place had they been recorded in 1966.

That the Sadies are able to seamlessly weave all of their obviously favorite influences into a sound that is uniquely their own, reveals a band that is creating exciting and vital music that stands a bit outside of the alt-country genre. One gets the sense that their Canadian-ness allows them the freedom to not only assume the stance of not so neutral observers, but to gleefully ransack rock's vaults, garages and groove yards for neat riffs, melodies and styles that help to genuinely rekindle the spirit of the sixties, when speaking one's mind on record got people together and talking. And if you think the closer "Why Would Anybody Live Here?" is a downer, cheer up buckaroo, for The Sadies play such cool music that you definitely want to stick around...at least long enough for their next record! In the meantime, enjoy Favourite Colours now!

4 out of 5 stars retro sixties style.......2006-02-15

The Sadies are new to me;I found this cd in the library. I picked it up because of the picture on the cover--these guys look cool. But to get to the review--if you like the Byrds country period-- you will like this. I liked the instrumentals--contrary to some of the other reviewers. They have a country hippy rock mixed with a strange surf rock guitar at times. The vocals are sort of like the Greatfull Dead meet the Byrds. Great dream trance like feeling when listening to this cd. So if you like Hippy country --get this you won't be disapointed.

5 out of 5 stars Great songs. Great musicianship........2005-09-04

I first heard about these guys because of the Neko Case connection, but they really hold their own on this one. What great sound and musicianship. Bits remind me of a less "indie" The Red Thread, and there's some beautiful Byrdsy stuff on here.

4 out of 5 stars No Clouds .......2005-05-09

On "Favourite Colours" this Toronto-based band turns in a good set. "Song of the Chief Musician (Part 2)" sounds like mid-flight Byrds with the Sadies climaxing in a thunderous guitar storm. "Why Be So Curious (Part 3)" plays at a midtempo pace with jangling guitars and then stops abruptly like a car right before the cliff. Blue Rodeo's Greg Keelor chimes in with backing vocals on "A Good Flying Day," "The sun is up, there's no clouds in your way." Of the instrumentals, "A Burning Snowman" stands out with a stately guitar twang that'd make Duane Eddy blush. This set by the Sadies is a good strong outing with sparkling moments, both vocally and instrumentally. Enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars Byrds, CSN, etc........2005-03-06

I got turned on to the Sadies via Jim White's "Drill a hole in that substrate...." CD, since the Sadies help him out on a few tracks. Here, The Sadies plumb Byrds and Crosby, Stills & Nash, and do a pretty good job at it. The album also has a Grateful Dead "American Beauty" vibe. As far as I'm concerned, they should have ditched most of the instrumental tracks. The highlight here is the last track, "Why would anybody live here". This is really a Robyn Hitchcock song, where they wisely let him do the vocals. It's a good album, but from my perspective, they do a great job helping Jim White out, but the reason the Hitchcock tune is the highlight, is that Hitchcock, unlike the Sadies, takes The Byrds, CSN, etc., and throws them sideways instead of simply trying to recreate them. If you're a Sadies fan, be sure to cross pollinate and get the aforementioned Jim White CD if you don't already have it.

5 out of 5 stars Continues the pop flavor of Into the Light.......2006-01-28

Flying Colors has continuity with de Burgh's previous album, Into the Light. His commercial breakthrough had come in a huge way with "Lady in Red" and Chris was obviously comfortable writing radio-friendly songs that were in this vein. This album boasted at least three hit singles, "Sailing Away", "Missing You" and "Tender Hands." "Sailing Away" is especially catchy. They are all good pop songs, but they are not the only good songs on this album. "Carry Me" is also a lovely song and I like the ballad "Just a Word Away." "A Night on the River" reminds me of Dire Straits and "The Last Time I Cried" is a nice song to end the album.
Chris also revisits Christian themes on this album, something I last recall he did on Crusader, but more so on Spanish Train and Other Stories. "The Simple Truth (A Child is Born)" and "The Risen Lord" are quite explicit in their references. I appreciate this about Chris - he was not shy about his faith even though he expressed the Christ story in allegory: "Just Another Poor Boy," and "A Spaceman Came Travelling."

5 out of 5 stars Passes with "Flying Colours".......2002-03-05

I first heard this album when I was about 5 and I loved it. This was one of the first I heard from him. Sailing Away became one of my faveourite songs by him. Now at 17 and I still listen to his music. I can't put the CD's down.
I recently ordered 5 of his CD's...and they all sound great.
He has brought out at least 15 albums, all with different themes to them.
The Love Songs was one of the greatest, with So Beautiful as my fave song.
In my opinion, you should all get all of his CD's. May cost a bit of [money] but it's worth it.

4 out of 5 stars fascinating.......1999-07-02

This is the album that made Chris well known especially in the states after his breakthrough he made with The Lady Ýn Red in "Into The Light". Unfortunatelly we didn't get a sufficant work from him so far after this album.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best cds ever.......1999-06-13

This is a cd which any normal human being would love. It great lyrics and great music with the great voice of Chris de Burg. I would rate this cd as 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars This album will not leave you........1999-02-12

I first heard the song, "Carry Me (Like a Fire in Your Heart)," in the closing scene to the final (or next to final) episode of 'Miami Vice' when it first aired. I knew it was Chris DeBurgh, but had never heard it before. The song captured perfectly the mood of Crockett's and Tubbs' loss of the dream of being able to make a difference in law enforcement. When I finally bought this CD, it stayed in my player for a week straight. The songs are powerful, and build to a stirring conclusion, reminiscent of his album, "The Getaway." A few songs, such as "Missing You," may require multiple listenings before they can be fully appreciated, because they lean towards Deburgh's sappy side. However, they lend a respite from the emotionally charged gems contained on the CD that will leave you speechless.

4 out of 5 stars One of Split Enz most impressive outings 4 1/2 stars.......2007-04-29

Although the "True Colours" doesn't sound quite as good Corroboree that probably has more to do with the fact that "Corroboree" was remxed and remastered. "True Colours" features Split Enz coming into its own. Remastered by band stalwart Eddie Rayner, "True Colours" extremely good here although I didn't do a head-to-head comparison to the previous U.S. release. The real reason to pick this up are the bonus tracks.

One of the Finn/Finn era's biggest albums in the United States album is among their eccentric and most eclectic releases featuring all the production touches common to the late 70's/early 80's but the song craft is far and away better than what most other bands were doing. Once Tim Finn invited his guitarist/vocalist brother Neil to join the band they produced a series of the band's most melodic and memorable albums. Buoyed by the success of "I Got You" (it actually broke into Billboard's singles charts at #53 only to be outdone with the next album's single also by Neil Finn "History Never Repeats" which charted at #33),"True Colours" came in at #40 on the album charts quite an achievement for a band that had previously been ignored in the United States.

The rest of the album is as impressive even if the album's production dates it a bit. "Shark Attack" is a catchy Tim Finn number and Tim checks in with one of his most effective ballads "I Hope I Never" which showcases his tenor voice. The album is supplemented by a pair of strong b-sides from the band's singles "Things" (by Tim) and "Two of a Kind" (by Neil) which were strong contenders for the album and add to the quality of this release.

The liner notes are nonexistant which is a pity--those who aren't as familair with the band will want to learn a bit about their history and this album's recording history. We do get complete lyrics (except for the bonus tracks). The original release had three different colored colors with the same design (the U.S. domestic version goes with the red and black design)but this CD release goes with the cover that adnorned subsequent releases.

"Corroborree" sounds better in its re-release than this album (primarily because Rayner went back and remixed the album cleaning it up quite a bit)with a less cluttered production, more detail than this album. While it is a comparable follow up with the highlights being better than the best songs here, it's a bit less consistent than "True Colours". If you pick up "Mental Notes", "True Colours", "Corroboree", "Time & Tide" and "Conflicting Emotions" (primarily for the gorgeous "Message to My Girl" and "Bon Voyage") you'll have the best music this underrated band produced. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Icehouse Man of Colours (+ 2 Bonus Tracks).......2007-01-19

This cd is great. Icehouse is a good Australian band, and I like them as much as I did in the eighties. Songs that stand out are their hits - Crazy and Electric Blue, as well as Nothing too Serious ( a very catchy song), and the title track Man of Colours. The whole cd is worth giving a listen to, and the bonus tracks of Crazy, are a great addition.

5 out of 5 stars Claudine Painting Music In "Colours".......2006-05-07

"Colours" -- the title of this album of songs interpreted by and delivered by the French songstress Claudine Longet describes the music as well as the performer artist Herself!

While Claudine's magical mystical whispy vocal style is mesmerizing on all of Her recorded works, THIS album, "COLORS" may be Her finest album of them all.

Of the eleven tracks included, all of them being more than enjoyable, i might single out several: Two Donovan penned songs -- "Catch The Wind" and "Colours" (which Claudine captured the spirit of the songs purrrrfectly!) . . . "For Bobbie (For Baby)" . . . and "Am I Blue".

My personal all-time favorite song on this or on any of Claudine's albums is "I Believed it All (Didn't You?)" -- what a poetic wistful nostalgic reminiscence of childhood and its hopes and fears and dreams! Claudine's magic makes this song seem so much like it could be any of our childhoods being re-presented. The album is worth gettijg just for this track alone . . . and all the other ten tracks are absolute gold-mine bonuses! :)

Claudine is a beautiful woman . . . making beautiful music . . . singing beautiful songs . . . beautifully!

Thank You Claudine Longet for all the great recordings You have gifted us with . . . and especially for this magical collection of "Colours"! :)

5 out of 5 stars Claudine's very best work.......2006-03-05

Until now, the only way for Claudine Longet fans to hear the Colours album would have been to buy one of the outrageously expensive Japanese import copies. Well, finally Colours is available again and at a very reasonable price. It should be noted up front that this recording is also an import. This time it's from Russia. Who knew that Claudine had fans in Russia? I do have to admit to being surprised and anxious about the anticipated quality of a Russian recording. However, I'm pleased to report that the quality is excellent. This CD is an exact copy of the original A&M Records recording (SP 4163). There are no bonus tracks on this CD. Accordingly, playing time by modern standards is somewhat short at a little over 31 minutes (11 songs). But what a 31-minute collection. In my opinion, Colours is Claudine's finest album. Claudine's low key performances are a welcome counterpoint to the volume blasting vocals of TV contestants that are being passed off as talent today. The CD comes with a booklet that I presume tells you about Claudine's life and recordings. Unfortunately, it's in Russian. I also presume that the Japanese CD comes with a booklet that is in Japanese. Oh, by the way, have no fear, her songs are sung in English.

5 out of 5 stars Top flight composer.......2006-12-25

Thirty two years ago a bass player with the Indiana University School of Music who lived in my dorm introduced me to ECM'S Eberhard Weber and "Colours of Chloe". I don't remember his name but wish to thank him in this review. At the time, I had been listening to a lot of fusion and Mahavishnu Orchestra's "Birds of Fire", which in comparison seems harsh and unrelenting. I was mesmerized by the hypnotic sound of the piano, bass and horns on this album. Thirty two years later I continue to be hypnotized. Third Stream was never better than in 1974. Weber is one of the few innovative composers of modern music and a creative force behind bringing the bass "out of the closet". "Chloe" remains one of my favorite albums of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Still Available!.......2004-01-14

Thanks to David Starns for his excellent reviews.

He, and others, may like to know that ECM claim
to keep all titles in print, in Munchen at least.

I ordered this title in the UK recently, and, of
course, amazon still list it in the US - so
hopefully it can now found there!

The album is really excellent. Although nominally
obscure, Weber's talent has been heard in the
mainstream, as he did session work with Kate Bush
in the [i think!] eighties. Check it out!

4 out of 5 stars a revolutionary CD and an anecdote.......2001-12-31

This was Weber's first ECM album. It was revolutionary because it combined classical or Third Stream elements with fusion, something that hadn't been ecplored previously. The result is a whole new tonal pallette that since then has been explored by a number of ECM artists such as Egberto Gismonti and countless others. This is the record that started it all, and for the most part it has weathered time well. Not so for the long final piece, No Motion Picture, which was always my least favorite and now sounds dated to my ears. Still, "side 1" is worth the price of admission and hopefully will lead the listener to some of Mr Webers' other neglected gems such as Fluid Rustle (one of Pat Metheny's favorite albums,) and the Following morning to name a couple. These are masterful examples of Weber's ability to straddle the classical minimalist and jazz genres with spectacular results. Get them all!!

Bonus anecdote:

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr Weber when he was on tour with Jan Garbarek in 1987. Because of a mixup with transportation to the Russian River jazz festival in Guerneville CA ,my friend had the honor of picking them up at the airport and delivering them to their hotel after the gig. We hung out by the pool, and for the most part i listened in rapt attention to my heroes as they traded stories, or sat in cool eurpean silence while sipping strong coffee by the pool. As the hotel they were staying at had a reputation for car breakins, I drove my friend's van back to my little cottage in the country and parked it in my space in the garage. It was surreal. Sitting parked in my space were Jan Garbarek's sax and Eberhard weber's magical 5 string bass! I couldn't resit it. I opened the van and reverently carried the bass into my little house. Gingerly I laid it on the floor of my studio. Just one look, I thought but alas; the case was locked. Still, I can say with all certainty that Eberhard weber's bass slept in my house.

5 out of 5 stars Eberhard Rules.......2000-11-24

I remember when I first picked up the cool cover and checked out the credits on the back. As soon as I saw the 5 string upright(I am a bass player by the way) I put it in the stack I was purchasing. I put it on (we are talking vinyl)as soon as I got home and was blown away. This album and Eberhard became a huge influence in both my musical and private life. I have all his works and as many albums and cds he has played on in my collection as I can find. I had the pleasure of meeting him after a Colours gig in the earley 80,s and seeing in 1999 with Jan Garberek. When people compare his work to Jaco, I think they have totally missed the point, Eberhard is a composer first and a virtouso second. Hs compostions have a timeless quality and are original in the extreme. I hope in the grand scheme of things he will be recognised as the grand master in all things relating to making the bass a leading melodic voice.

5 out of 5 stars They don't make them like this anymore........2000-10-02

Maybe it's silly to review an album that's "no longer available," but I feel the need to vent. What kind of world is this when you can walk into a record store and buy 35 copies of the new Brittany Spears, but even Amazonfrikkin'dot com, the world's most complete record store, can't secure you a CD of what is arguably one of the best albums of all time?

If you've never heard Weber's work, I suggest you start with "Silent Feet" or maybe "Fluid Rustle," though that one is atypical stylistically. "The Colors of Chloe" hails from Weber's most fruitful period, the mid-70's, when he also recorded "Yellow Fields," "The Following Morning" (my personal favorite), and several teriffic albums with Gary Burton and Pat Metheny. His later work ("Chorus" onward) never quite put all the elements together as effectively.

This music typifies everything that was good about Manfred Eicher's ECM label. The music is complex without being technical; melancholy without being maudlin; reflective without being self-absorbed. This is the music that new age could've been, if it had been less concerned about soothing the listener and more concerned about saying something substantive. Every track on this album drips with atmosphere and intrigue. Like most truly great music, though, "The Colors of Chloe" provides the listener with cake under the icing; with some musically valid substance justifying the ear candy. If, on some glorious morn, you find that Weber's classic albums are once again in print, I suggest you sneak into your son or daughter's room, steal his or her N'sync CD's, and trade them in on a complete Eberhard Weber library. One day, the kid will thank you.
