5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Tall Ships Suite.......2007-01-05

This has been off the market for a number of years except for its occasional play on classical music stations. But Arkiv music is now distributing the album under license from Sony BMG Masterworks and it is superb. This is the original 1992 recording by Conifer Records, and still without notes. There are five tracks. The Suite itself has three of them: (1) The Race Begins, (2) The Open Sea, and (3) Landfall and The Grand Parade of Sail. Then there are two additional tracks with pieces by the composers Dave Roylance and Bob Galvin: Ocean Fantasia and Voyager. They are as good or better than the Suite itself, and that's a feat. Total playing time is 54:38. As the other reviews suggest, this is Romantic music at its best, conveying the imagery and feel of the Tall Ships under sail. If you saw them entering New York Harbor, you have some inkling their magnificence. Listening to this suite takes you there. It offers the same kind of inspiration you might get from Beethoven's Eroica, Dvorak's New World Symphony, Holst's Planets, or any number of other musical epic saga's. It's an extraordinary piece of music without cliches. The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra does a marvelous job, but because it was written as background music, you may find yourself cranking up the volume to match the vast expanse of its imagery. Don't hesitate. Get your copy before it disappears again.

5 out of 5 stars Where Oh Where?.......2006-02-22

Majastic, soaring music....I too have heard segments over the Radio(Phx Az) for the past 5/6 years......scoured the Internet all the way to Europe....... no luck. Where can I find This??? any help would be greatly appreciated. Tnx

5 out of 5 stars The item as described doesn't exist.......2006-01-22

I, too, heard the same broadcast. After a year of constant searching I finally got it. The tracks as listed here are terribly incorrect. As listed, the 5th track "Grand Parade of Sail" is actually the last movement of The Suite. "Ocean Fantasia" is not part of the The Suite. Since they're out of order, I'm pretty sure this listing is wrong. The CD I have was released in '92- MAYBE they changed the tracks for a '94 release. Considering how hard this CD is to get, I don't think so.

5 out of 5 stars Most beautiful music I have ever heard.......2004-07-03

I was driving to work one day when I heard this album being played on 89.5 FM KBAQ, the local radio station in Phoenix, AZ. This was the most incredible piece of classical music I have ever heard. I had tuned in to the station in the middle of the first song, "Tall Ships Suite", and straight away I thought of large sailing ships on the open ocean; without even hearing the track title. Very, very few pieces of classical music can invoke a specific type of imagery in your mind, but this one did. Beethoven's Pastoral symphony is another good example of such a type of music.

How does this music sound like? Grand, dramatic, powerful, sweeping; along the lines of other great symphonies like Dvorak's 9th or Tchaikovsky's 5th. I also believe this is the best piece of music by an English composer(s).

I have been searching for this album on and off for the last 4 years since I first heard it, but to no avail. I can find no trace of the the composers, conductor, or record company anywhere. Its as if they disappeared of the face of the earth after creating this wonderful piece of music. Oh well; such is life...the greatest treasures are experienced only once in a lifetime.

2 out of 5 stars complete but lacking.......2005-06-14

While I am a fan of Thibaudet in general, he just seems lost here. Satie is deceptively difficult to judge as a performer, the music is at times mercurial or static, profound or frivolous, or all of the above. Yet one hardly needs to underline the oddness, it's perfectly revealed if you play it straight.
While some misread notes suggest he may not really know these pieces, Thibaudet manages to project something less than a competent sight reading. In such an endeavor he would certainly get the right feel occasionally by accident. Instead, he regularly puts the wrong foot forward, with odd accents and effects getting in the way, perhaps trying too hard to add spin to music whose mysteries refuse to unfold under such duress.
I would recommend collecting a number of different performers: Reinbert DeLeeuw, Pascal Roge, Anne Queffelec, JoAnna MacGregor and Michel Legrand have all made worthy contributions to the recent discography and their combined recordings would make a pretty-near complete survey.

3 out of 5 stars good for completists, but..........2004-05-18

I jumped at the chance to buy this set; a new digital recording of Satie's complete solo piano music. I had admired Jean-Yves Thibaudet in the past and had seen him perform Messiaen's "Turangalila Symphony"; a great performance. However, after listening to this set for three straight months, I'm rather frustrated with it, mostly on aesthetic grounds, since I can't deny Thibaudet's talents; I just disagree with some of his interpretations.

To start, most of the shorter, "lite" pieces are performed very well on disc 4. Even the most popular, (Gymnopedies, Gnossiennes) are excellent. I am also thankful I now have performances of "Uspud" and many of Satie's conservatory assignments, played expertly and with good humor. For these, the set is worth having.

But now, the bad news. As I have complained about in the past with Thibaudet's Ravel discs, I'm frankly rather put-off by his inexplicable, pointless staccato in many of the pieces. "Petite Overture a la Danser" is one of my favorite Satie miniatures, and here Thibaudet botches it by playing it way too fast with no pedal. It sounds like a joke, and I think he totally misses the point of the piece. In the "Nazareen" preludes, he adds his own extreme dynamics which are not indicated in the original scores, and the effect seems like a cheap attempt to add "spice" to what are supposed to be meditative sound constructions, based on poetry forms rather than classical forms.

"Prelude to the Heroic Gate of Heaven" is taken far too slow, and Thibaudet completely cuts out the "Curtain" coda in the original Salabert edition for no apparent reason; he seems determined to give the piece a more "proper" ending, and for this listener, it's a terrible, narcissistic, and disrespectful miscalculation.

I will keep this set since it is a complete document, flawed though it may be. But I still must insist that the best living interpreter of Satie's piano music is the ever-underrated Reinbert DeLeeuw, who is completely in-tune with Satie's sly magic. His tempos may be slow, his dynamics few, but that's the whole point; this is highly personal music, and DeLeeuw has an aesthetic I can personally agree with. For an audible explanation of what I'm talking about, compare the performances of "Petite Overture a la Danser" by DeLeeuw and Thibaudet, and you'll see what I mean.

5 out of 5 stars Yes, its worth five discs.......2003-12-17

Each disc averages about 75 minutes of music. Over six hours of Satie? Definitely yes. If you have an affinity for Satie's classic pieces you should not pass up this set. There are so many standout pieces in so many wonderful styles you can only leave this set with wonder. And Thibaudet seems made for this music. The best interpreter of Satie that I've heard. His technique is amazing with such a range of subtle fingering tempo and dynamics. Its as though I've heard some of these for the first time with new shocks of emotion I hadn't experienced before. Not to be missed.

Perhaps I should start by admitting a bias: Many years ago, lying on Boston's grassy Esplanade by the Charles River on warm summer nights, I learned what a symphony orchestra should sound like, with Arthur Fiedler conducting the Boston Pops Orchestra. Those concerts were free; these seven compact discs are not--not quite. But for any lover of light classical music, they are certainly one of the best buys available. The orchestra (essentially the Boston Symphony) is one of the world's greatest; the music, from Smoke Gets in Your Eyes to the Goyescas Intermezzo and Ride of the Valkyries is instantly enjoyable and permanently valuable; the conductor is at the same time genial and exacting, convinced that any music you play, no matter how frivolous, deserves the best you can give it. --Joe McLellan

            Album Description

Imagine a show filled with your favorite hits from the Broadway stage, all composed by Broadway legend Jerry Herman! GMCLA was privileged to collaborate with Mr. Herman on a dazzling show of his greatest hits, featuring new arrangements for men's voices. Luckily, those happy performances were captured on this live album, including performances by guest stars Nancy Dussault and Malcolm Gets. Hear GMCLA soloists and dancers too, and the spontaneous joys of an ecstatic audience, clearly reveling in this unique moment.

Perhaps most magical of all, hear the Legend himself, Jerry Herman, perform live with GMCLA, accompanying himself on piano with his inimitable style. Rare moments like these make this a CD to cherish. All words and music, of course, by Jerry Herman.

4 out of 5 stars Very nice melodic pop/rock.......2004-09-01

Many of the tunes on this cd will find there way to your repeat button. Although this album is fairly laid back, it has some bite to it. I found other releases by Frank & Walters to be way too pastoral for my taste. If you prefer songs that make you want to sing along, this is their best release. Best cuts include; Colours, Indian Ocean, Russian Ship, and the majestic Tony Cochrane. If you like Britpop, you'll like this.

            5 out of 5 stars Grand Parade.......2000-02-24

Picked this album up in Tokyo a year ago, and this thing rips! Say the F&W in Dublin in 92 and they are a throw-back to what the Irish cutting edge is all about. Song after song just wants to scream and be played LOUD. Do yourself a favor, and pick this bad-boy up, you'll feel like yoou are in the "Old Oak" pub in olde city cork hyd.

5 out of 5 stars Irelands most under-rated band do it again.......1999-06-09

This amazing cd from Corks legendary yet woefully under-listened to heroes was last one of last years best albums (even if it was two years old even then - thank the record company). Now they've released yet another classic CD called "Beauty Becomes More Than Life" which sees the Franks just getting better and better. They've also added a lasher of a keyboard player to the line up. Check them out live and buy the CD's - you wont be sorry

            5 out of 5 stars Buy this.......1999-05-24

For God's sake, will someone buy this album and put something worthwhile in the charts!

5 out of 5 stars will America ever discover the frank and walters?.......1999-04-08

none of them are named frank OR walter. but who cares. this disc is gorgeous. the first track, "colours," blew me away from the first listen. the f&w's have expanded their musical scope, adding humming cellos and other strings to their songs that really round out the sound. they continue in their tradition of upbeat yet introspective lyrics, such as "it's time we stopped the pretending that we don't need love to get by/ i know you're feeling the same way cause you can't look me in the eye..." if any of their songs ever had a chance on the radio they'd be an instant hit. 12 songs, and not a bad track on the disc. good for singing in a car or a stairwell. one of my top ten favorite discs. thanks, frank and walters-- i'll be looking for your next.
