Great to Hear All those great Voices from the Past.......2007-07-05

I just wanted to confirm what the first reviewer had to say about this CD. To hear Ethyl Merman, Mary Martin, Andrea McCardle etc. singing their trademark songs brought a lot of memories from the mid-centry musical theater back again. The last song by Glynis Johns is especially poignant.
You certainly can't beat the price!

A Good One!.......2006-11-10

This is a very good CD, mostly because it's the original artists. I've had some that were re-recorded by no name artists that were ghastly. This one is a really good one--including the sound quality. If I had one wish, I would wish it were longer!

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

Best of the the popular Copland..........2004-12-26

Here's a great introduction to the popular music of Aaron Copland. When "Fanfare for the Common Man" begins, sparks of recognition will fly for most listeners. This song has been everywhere: presidential inaugurations, the olympics, commercials, movies, etc. Some flatten it as hopelessly clichéd, while others find it moving and inspiring. Copland also reprised it in the finale of his Third Symphony. Arguably Copland's most famous piece, "Appalachian Spring" closes the CD. In between, more great Copland: excerpts from 'Rodeo' (apparently the beef lobby has appropriated "Hoe-Down" as one of their themes); a great vocal rendition of "Simple Gifts" and a large chunk of another of Copland's best known works: "Billy the Kid". The only confusing piece is the "Variations on a Shaker Hymn" from Appalachian Spring when the entire Appalachian Spring is already included. Seems slightly redundant.

Though most of the pieces on this CD were written in the 1930s and 1940s, they tend to evoke the old west. With titles such as "Rodeo" and "Billy the Kid" this shouldn't surprise too many people.

Copland went on to compose more dissonant and twelve tone compositions later on in his career. These obviously weren't as popular with the public in general as the pieces on this CD. Nonetheless, if this disc whets the appetite, a foray into Copland's less popular works will yield much. It will help to expose the totality of Copland's output. This disc only represents a small portion of his work. Regardless, this disc is a great starting point for getting to know one of the United States' best known composers of the twentieth century.

A Great American Album.......2004-02-13

This is a great album representing true patriotic American music. Songs like "Hoe-Down" are lively and energetic and give rememberance to what one can imagine as the true American spirit.

I like all types of music, I wanted this album because I liked the song "RODEO" that is used on the beef commercials. This CD has made me into a Copland fan. It has many great songs. If you want a CD that says "I am an American." This is it. I am sending copies to a friend in Bombay and Tel Aviv. This is who I am put to music.

Astounding "Canyon"; "Rodeo" Rivals NYP.......2007-01-05

Close your eyes and be transported to the Canyon. In this remastering of a 1960 recording, Morton Gould shows his chops as a superlative conductor and interpreter of this Grofe classic. The work itself is wonderful, but Gould and his orchestra provide nuances that absolutely delight. Of the five movements of "Grand Canyon Suite", the final, "Cloudburst", ceases becoming music and is elevated to pure sensory experience. It is no longer notes on a page finely executed; it IS the sky, the wind, the sheets of rain (a sheer, shimmering slide of sound), the thunder, and it is perfect. The four prior movements are nearly as excellent, with the second, "Painted Desert", casting an eerie shadow over the listener's mind with spellbinding brush strokes. This is a performance delivered with painstaking care.

Gould's treatment of Copland's works, recorded three years earlier, were of great personal interest, as one of my earliest exposures to "serious" music was the great Bernstein recording of "Rodeo", and "Buckaroo Holiday" in particular. Surprisingly, Gould and company give the NYPO a run for its money. They are just as energized, brash and even raw (hear the horns, and it's fitting) as New York; ditto the "Gun Battle" episode of "Billy". Gould threw himself into Copland's scores and whipped his musicians into a frenzy when called for, and the results place Gould's readings of these two pieces of Americana right behind Bernstein.

This CD - beautifully remastered - is a bargain.

Superb recordings of American classics........2004-04-27

I thoroughly agree with all other reviewers (though I wish some would spell Copland's name right!) Morton Gould conducts with great verve and sensitivity. "Rodeo" is terrific and it also includes the seldom heard "Honky-Tonk Interlude" which is a delight in itself.
The Grand Canyon Suite is a highlight with its marvellous orchestration and melodic richness. Although the score is influenced by a number of composers such as Dukas, Ravel, Respighi and even Richard Strauss, it nevertheless feels entirely
original. "On the trail" is beautifully rhythmical,one can really feel the trotting
of the donkeys, and the sound effects are pure joy. Note the
ee-ah-ing of the donkeys, so superbly part of the music. (somewhat reminescent of Mendelssohn's Midsummer Night's Dream overture.) The Cloudburst is a sonic triumph.
This recording comes from 1957, but digitally remastered. Sound is demonstration quality. Still probably the best available, highly recommended.

Copland and Gould - LSC-2195.......2004-02-12

I've heard Copland conducting these two works on recordings and I've heard the famous NYPO/Bernstein's 1960 recording of these two works on Columbia Records, yet Gould and his Orchestra fills in the blank spaces that was left out in previous and recent recordings.

He takes his troup to NYC to Manhatten Center, in Oct of 1957, and have the legendary RCA producer, John Pfeiffer and Lewis Layton, produce and engineer this recording session to be encaptured on 3-track tape (where the "Billy the Kid" was released on RCA "New Orthophonic tape recording" - the BCS-130), then to eventual vinyl (LM/LSC-2195). Gould, being somewhat of an arrangement conductor in the 50's, manage to pull the stops out in how these two Copland pieces are to be presented-to where the listener can feel that they themselves are back in the Wild, Wild West of the 1880's. He doesn't rush through these two pieces like some other conductors do. Gould takes his time trying to tell the story within the music. He uses emphasis, emotion, tempo and dynamics where it should be per each chapter in a story. Excellent listening for all!

This BMG "Living Stereo" release of the LSC-2195 Copland/Gould is a faithful reproduction as it can be of the original vinyl release.

Gould conducts Copland and Grofe.......2003-11-21

It may surprise some to discover that American composer/conductor Morton Gould conducted such fine performances of other American composers' music. These RCA Victor "Living Stereo" recordings are vivid, excellent proof that Gould was a really fine conductor and not just of his own music.

The performances of the suites from Copland's ballets "Billy the Kid" and "Rodeo" are among the best ever recorded. They benefit not only from Gould's wonderful sensitivity and appreciation but from excellent playing by the "pickup" orchestra and the still remarkable "Living Stereo" recording process, in which RCA used only three microphones and advanced mastering techniques.

Ferde Grofe's "Grand Canyon Suite" was a "labor of love" as the skilled composer/arranger spent considerable time carefully depicting his impressions of one of the greatest natural wonders of the world. Grofe had been a very successful arranger for Paul Whiteman and is still remembered for the very first orchestration of George Gershwin's "An American in Paris," premiered by Gershwin at the piano with Whiteman conducting in New York's Aeolian Hall in February 1924.

Grofe composed a number of original orchestral works in later years and the "Grand Canyon Suite" is probably his best. It contains memorable melodies and is skillfully orchestrated throughout. It so impressed Arturo Toscanini that he recorded it in 1945 for RCA Victor, under the supervision of the composer. Grofe himself conducted a recording of the suite for Everest Records in 1960. Gould's recording is excellent. The final movement, depicting a spectacular thunderstorm, is absolutely awesome. I think this recording may surpass an earlier favorite, also recorded for RCA Victor, by Arthur Fiedler and the Boston "Pops" Orchestra.

Superlative performance of Copeland.......1999-12-26

Billy the Kid & Rodeo were both etched in my soul when as a young boy I listened along with my mother. This performance by Morton Gould remains for me above any other that I have heard and I have heard many given my love for them. This is a re-issue of an original 3 microphone/3 track TRUE stero recording made by RCA in their 'Living Stero' series and originally recorded in 1957. A must have for Copeland listeners. It is a bonus that it also contains 'Grand Canyon Suite.'

When it was released back in 1976, a line from the seductive ballad "Tonight's the Night"--"Spread your wings and let me come inside"--was racy enough to get the song banned in some quarters. That may seem quaint by today's standards, as does "The Killing of Georgie," a lament over the murder of one of Stewart's gay friends. In fact, both songs, and particularly the latter, were as daring as they were accomplished, helping to make A Night on the Town Stewart's best effort of the mid-'70s. The distinctions "slow side" and "fast side" (originally assigned to the LP's A and B sides) are meaningless in the age of CDs, but they point out how adept Stewart is at any speed, reeling off a gorgeous rendition of Cat Stevens's "The First Cut is the Deepest" and the raucous original "The Balltrap" with equal aplomb. --Daniel Durchholz

I used to listen to this particular album when I was in highschool back in the middle 70s. I always thought Rod's bluesy honky tonk stuff on this album was some of his best stuff: "The Balltrap", "Big Bayou", and "Wild Side of Life." I bought the CD just to listen to those three songs again. Also, "The First Cut is the Deepest" was always another favorite in high school. I'm sure this was Sheryl Crow's inspiration too. Her version sonds almost the same note for note. Good stuff!

A Groundbreaking Album That Touched Many Social Tabu's.Timeless.......2007-02-10

"A Night On The Town" is a classic from my early teen years and has remained a favorite.The song "Tonight's the Night" had panicked Dads everywhere locking their daughters in at night."The Killing of Georgie" was one of the most touching ballads that dealt with a hate crime broke down a barrier and brought a serious issue into mainstream homes.Groundbreaking for the daring lyrics, the video from the album on "The Midnight Special" was a parents worst nightmare much to our amusement.Rod Stewart wrote quite a few of the songs on the album like "The Balltrap", "Tonight's The Night",the gut wrenching farewell to a friend "The Killing of Georgie" and my personal favorite "Fool For You" and yes I got my Chanel and Cartier (My sizes are always on file but I used education, brains,charm and hard work to smash the glass ceiling @ 26).I love every song on this album although I admit I did not know what the term "Flamingo" meant until 3 years ago after hearing it for years and associating it with all of the time's I would lay out on my sailboat in the Keys and the tan while working with a cell phone to each ear.Live and learn.About 30 copies of this have been left behind in Hotel Room CD Players, Limousines, Private Sedans and Rental Cars so I keep replacing this CD because it is on my list of CD's I would want if stranded on a deserted island.I just wish Rod Stewart would write more of his own music now while we still have this talented singer, I was fortunate to catch a couple of recent shows 1 at home & another while at a conference this week that coincides with NYC Fashion Week events and he sings live so well.If he would only play Europe next week!.Life is great when you can Rock AND Work!!!!!!!!!!!!

Very Nice Album.......2005-06-21

Rod Stewart has made possibly every type of song in his illustrious career, and this album is a fine example of just how diverse Rod is. This is one of those albums where you don't skip to the next track; every track is that good. The "slow half" features the obviously slower, lovelier tracks, while the "fast half" features throw-it-in-your-face boogie down songs. For a relaxing evening of enjoyable, high-quality songs, pick this 1976 gem up.

Some okay stuff on it.......2004-11-13

This is the point where I thought Rod Stewart was losing it. Something about it was thin compared to previous works, which had a richness and depth and complexity that this one lacked. It had a few good ones, but mostly sounded tinny by comparison to his earlier music. Back in '76 when this came out on vinyl, I bought it. Then I think I bought two more albums after this one, but only because I was so wishing he could recapture some of what he had delivered on his earlier albums and with the Faces. I was disappointed with both. Incidentally, it was interesting to read Mr. Eakes' comments above, that the CD grew on him after he set it aside and tried it again later. I always had found that all of Rod Stewart's (and most of the Faces') works started off not doing that much for me on the first listen, but then growing better and better and better with repeated exposure, which I decided was the true mark that it was "art" and not pop junk that wore out quickly. But it was with "Night on the Town" that Stewart was moving away from the art and toward the pop junk.

Half a fine album.......2001-06-14

Conveniently enough, on this album Rod's lined up the material in descending order of quality. THE GOOD: the first four songs are among his best in his sensitive-singer-songwriter mode. Megahit "Tonight's the Night" holds up well as a tender/slightly sleazy sexual awakening song, "First Cut" is just plain beautiful, and "Killing of Georgie" is brave and moving especially for a man's man like Rod. THE SO-SO: the four rockers that follow aren't bad, but it's kinda hard to tell where one leaves off and the next begins because they're all in the same midtempo, whiteboyboogie, "whoo, what a bad boy am I" mode. On the albums previous to this (especially on the four classic Mercury albums that form the core of his artistic reputation) he's shown that he can rock in many more ways than this. And for a fellow who at the time was treating women like tissue paper to whine about how one of them has him in a "Balltrap"... well, all I can say is it serves you right, Roddy. THE WRETCHED: "Trade Winds", one of the most godawful Brotherhood of Man songs ever written. Better folks than Rod have failed at this same theme because it's a hard one - put one foot wrong and you're wading in the syrup. To sum up: if you're not a Stewart completist you might be better served by buying a best-of that has "Tonight's", "First Cut" and "Georgie" on it - I'm sure there's one available.

This album is oh so good.I think it might have something to do with the fact that it was recorded and produced by the great Mr.Ken Navarro with backing by ken's own over tight band.Eric darius is a Rare Talent,this young man will be around for a long time.This is also one of the best debut albums by a smooth jazz artist ever,only overshadowed by Mike Phillips jaw dropping entry on "you have reached.." 5 stars given as i never had the option to give 7

I heard Eric Darius perform on Warren Hill's Smooth Jazz Cruise and immediately bought his CD "Night on the Town." This is one of those rare CD's where every tune is great. The single "Night on the Town" has hit written all over it. This is currently one of my favorite CD's and I listen to it constantly. Eric plays with subtleties, flavors, and expressions of feelings that will have sax lovers proclaiming that he is one awesome player!

To be honest,I had never heard of Eric Darius.Since I had never heard of him,I felt he was new.Like,Michael Phillips was a few years ago who was very talented.The cover of the CD,and the title of it impressed me.So I bought it and gave it a listen.And wow!!! was I impressed.This young sax player blew my mind.From the first cut to the last,it was,how you say it,a joy ride.The cd was so amazing I can hardly pick a favorite cut.But let me give you a clue,I played "lets stay together" about 5 times in succession without going to the next cut. exceptional stand outs:(4) let it flow(5)love tko(1)joy ride. To say the least ths young man can blow.He definately have honey in his horn!! Keep it up Eric,You're so fine.

The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

This is the best Christmas album you could ever get. It is the most stable as you do not have to think about it. This is the album you really sing along to. Brass makes everything festive, grand and noble; so will your Christmas! A gem for every year!

Meat and Potatoes.......2007-01-18

Since the release of this fine recording in 1967 there have been many fine
brass groups:The Canadian Brass, the Empire Brass, just to name a few.
Whereas these latter groups have all resorted to "gimmicks" such as unique arrangements to sell their albums this group of brass players from the Philadelphia Orchestra give us an album of good old "meat and potatoes" playing spiced with fine tone,good ensemble playing, and good tempos.

I love listening to this cd at christmas. The brass is so crisp, almost like being right there. You have to add this to your holiday collection, and for those of you who like brass, you will love it. I play the french horn and I esp. love hearing the french horn in it.

A Splendid Souvenir to Remember a Spectacular Performance!.......2003-10-30

Having been fortunate to have seen the English National Opera's production in 1988 of "Orpheus" with Wilson and Pountney's outrageously naughty English text, this highlight CD serves as an audio souvenir. Too bad the ENO didn't have the foresight to film the production-would have made a great DVD. The CD booklet does have a few photos of the sets designed by Gerald Scarfe (who also designed Pink Floyd's "The Wall" album artwork) so you get a taste, combined with the CD selections, of what the production was like.

Offenbach is great anyhow, but this recording is riotous. The translation into English is first-rate, really funny stuff, and the singing is pretty good, too. Very worthwhile.

Orpheus in the Underworld.......2000-03-17

The rewritten lyrics, in English, are some of the wittiest and wicked in operetta. Wilson and Pountney have recaptured the spirit of naughtiness, not a small accomplishment in our licentious times. Though delighted to have the highlights, I wished a CD set or video of the full production were available.

Disappointed.......2007-02-19

I was very disappointed with this CD. Dean and Frank sound drunk throughout most of the CD and the audience detracts from the songs.

This CD is just so much fun. I'm too young to really remember the Rat Pack per se, but I remember the old movies. After purchasing a Frank Sinatra CD and just falling madly in love with the voice and the music I purchased this on a whim.

I drive along and this CD has me singing and laughing and it puts me in such a glorious mood! I wish they were still around as I would be in line at the Sands for a chance to see them.

Seperately Sammy, Frank and Deano are devine, superb, delicous. But together they are enchanting! You'll be so happy you bought this even if you've never even heard a single song by any of these three.

It's the Gold Standard in musical entertainment.
