My Favorite Band.......2005-03-28
This is simply an amazing album. When I first played it, I was afraid it wouldn't live up to (sound as good as) the first two albums. But from the very first song ("Swan"), I was completely sold on the band's music once again.
I just learned that Aaron Perrino has worked on three albums with his new band "Dear Leader." I ordered all three "Dear Leader" albums this evening. Needless to say, I highly recommend all of the Sheila Divine albums and look forward to hearing new songs from "Dear Leader."
Overblown.......2004-10-29
The Sheila Divine certainly struck gold with their outstanding debut New Parade, an album with excellent, moody songwriting and dynamic range. Unfortunately, it seems like too many people felt it was their duty to praise lead singer Aaron Perrino on how incredible his voice was. Now instead of a passionate outing with yearning vocals and keen songcraft, we have an overblown series of vocal acrobatics that sound as if they were intended to get said frontman a tryout for the Phantom of the Opera. This album just limps along wounded, coming off flat and contrived and frankly I just didn't get it. An unfortunate mis-step for a once promising band.
Stunningly Amazing.......2003-05-09
I first heard of The Sheila Divine in 2000 when i saw them open for Morrissey. I was blown away by their music and completely hooked ever since. The Smiths/Morrissey used to be my favorite band/artist of all time (for over a decade)...that is until I heard The Sheila Divine.
This cd, Secret Society, is their third (well, actually fourth) release and you can see how they've evolved and improved without losing their trademark sound. my only complaint is that it only has six songs on it. But those six are just phenominal.
Simply stated...you have to get this.
The Word is Out on The Sheila Divine's Secret Society!.......2002-10-11
The Sheila Divine's new EP, Secret Society, simply cannot remain a secret. This is an E-X-C-E-L-L-E-N-T disc from one of the most promising lesser-known bands in music today. In my opinion, this album provides ample evidence that The Sheila Divine is poised to make it big. This relatively young band has produced a work that rivals albums from the most popular and preeminent rock artists today. Secret Society is complete with outstanding songwriting, energetic musicianship, and the powerful vocals of Aaron Perrino. Rock music just doesn't get better than this!
The EP begins with "Swan," a song with a name that dovetails directly with the tune itself. As you might imagine, this is a soaring, graceful, majestic song. On the second track, "We All Have Problems," Aaron Perrino recounts feelings of insignificance in the world, making this perhaps the most personal of all songs on the album. "Dramatica" is an effervescent, visceral experience, a masterfully written song supported by earnest vocals and engaging musicianship. "Back to the Cradle" is the hardest song on the album, a melodic but driving rocker with an explosive chorus. The next tune, "Calling All Lovers" is a sweeping ballad irresistibly delivered with the power, passion, and sincerity of Aaron Perrino's voice. The final track, "Black River," is an exquisitely crafted song - between the melodies, the harmonies, the transitions, the lyrics, and the intricacies of sound, this song approaches musical perfection.
My complaint about Secret Society? It only has six tracks!!!
I must also say this. Before buying Secret Society, I read reviews comparing The Sheila Divine to U2. No way, I said to myself, there's no way anybody can compare to the greatest rock and roll band of the last 20 years. Well, a couple of songs on this album sound just like something you might hear from U2. Listen to "Dramatica" and "Black River," and then you can draw your own conclusions.
I also own a copy of New Parade, a great album that was my initial happenstance exposure to The Sheila Divine. With their latest release, this band has definitely won me over: I'm a committed fan. I look forward to hearing more outstanding music from The Sheila Divine!!!
underappreciated and deserving.......2002-09-25
I've been a fan of TSD since I heard "Opportune Moment" in the Cambridge Soundworks commercial. Though the band has progressed since then, their sound remains recognizably TSD: the lyrics are thoughtful without being pretentious, and the musical hooks... these guys deserve a wider audience. So far, my favorite track is "The Swan", which hit me like a 2x4. This'll be on my turntable for a good long while....

Fine Compilation - A Good Place to Start!.......2007-04-02
This is a compilation of songs from five albums by the Divine Comedy. From "Liberation" in 1993 till "Fin de Circle" in 1998. As attraction for people who already own those five albums there a four tracks included only on this release.
All hit-singles are included; big as well as small, and as such this should be an easy introcution to a relatively complex band/artist.
There is an easy recognizeable Englishness to these
songs, though they're very varied in style and arrangement. Somehow I also feel there is a connection to the singing and songwriting style of Jim Morrison of the Doors.
It not easy to bring forward any specific songs; but "Everybody Knows" must be my personal favourite.
Divine!.......2006-02-07
Take some of the wit and irony of Oscar Wilde and add a dash of the whimsical writings of English playwright Noel Coward, blend together into a mixture of some very finely crafted pop songs and you have the wonderful charm and intelligence of The Divine Comedy. Guaranteed to put a smile on your face at least, the Divine Comedy is essentially Neil Hannon who is the singer/songwriter behind the band. The songs on this compilation, selected from the band's first album "Liberation" in 1993 to their fifth album "Fin de Siecle" in 1998, clearly demonstrates Hannon's knack for writing clever, well-structured "quintessential English pop" (to borrow a cliché) with tales of life, loss and romance. Hannon seems to be at his best though when singing of times gone by, reminiscing back to far gone days and wishing things were as good now as they appeared to be then. This he demonstrates in two of the most engaging songs on the album, "The Summerhouse" and "The Frog Princess" both of which stop at just the right side of sentimentality.
There's some irresistibly catchy songs, such as "Gin Soaked Boy", "Becoming More Like Alfie" and "National Express" which is an amusing but affectionate look at traveling aboard the British bus equivalent of Greyhound, with wonderfully humorous lines such as, "it's hard to get by when your ass is the size of a small country" (anyone who's traveled on these buses and tried to maneuver themselves past someone in the center aisle will know exactly what Neil means).
There's some quite emotionally-charged songs on the album too, notably "The Certainty of Chance" and "Too Young To Die", the former climaxing in a wonderful, spoken-word piece by Neil that sounds as though it comes from a children's fantasy tale. "Lucy" is another beautiful song, this time one of loss and regret with lyrics readily provided by the 18th and 19th Century English poet, William Wordsworth. "I've Been To A Marvelous Party" was a song written by the above-mentioned Noel Coward and recorded by the Divine Comedy for a Coward tribute album in 1998. It sounds a little out of place on the album as the chorus adopts a heavy 90's Euro-dance beat after transforming from the light, contemporary sound of a typical Noel Coward song.
The Divine Comedy are an underrated group who deserve greater recognition, demonstrated here on this album by some of their finest achievements. There's something to be enjoyed by everyone on this compilation. Buy it and you'll have an album to fondly return to again and again.
A Romantic & Charming collection.......2005-10-02
do you have any guilty pleasures in life? perhaps you find yourself singing along a little too loudly when that particular Barry Manilow songs comes on the radio. or perhaps you're just helpless when it comes to a genuine pop hook no matter how cheesy or uncool the person who's singing the song can be. well...let me introduce you to Neil Hannon, the songwriting genius behind The Divine Comedy. now, the term "songwriting genius" should probably be used very carefully when describing someone. because basically, almost anyone who writes songs can write a fairly okay song that will find it's place in someone's heart one way or another. that's a pretty safe bet. but what of those singer songwriters who are obsessed with a perfect vision of not just how their songs sound, but of how those songs and their sound affect every visual perception of the band down to the record sleeves and the band's wardrobe. in other words, their songs and their sound become an identity, a personality, and a way of life. Neil Hannon had his vision; armed with a fierce lyrical cleverness, and a gift to write inescapeably perfect pop songs, he managed to release a slew of amazing records whose songs gather the influence from some of those "guilty pleasures" that we all have, and adds a pompous smug and a smooth European smirk to the proceedings (not to mention a snappy collection of designer suits). A Secret History collects many of those best songs from his past albums (up to Fin de Siecle) and for those who have yet to discover The Divine Comedy, this compilation serves as a gateway to a wonderful world. it should me mentioned that if you like kitsch pop music, you are going to love this band. especially tracks like the irresistable "National Express" and "Generation Sex". but there's plenty of good old fashioned lovesongs like "Everybody Knows", "The Frog Princess" and "Songs Of Love." ahh---so heart meltingly beautiful and unashamedly romantic that it hurts. then there's the late night drinking-yourself-into-depression cuts like "Too Young To Die" which has a solemn, reflective tone. but my two favorite cuts are "The Certainty of Chance" with it's lazy rolling bassline and breezy drums that just swoop and glide along with one of the most enchanting melodies that Neil's ever put to tape. the other personal favorite from this collection is the closing number "Tonite We Fly" which just soars with a lovely feeling that makes you think (for a moment) that everything is right in the pop music world. i feel lucky to have discovered the Divine Comedy, therefore rendering their history not so secret; because with talent this pure, the music needs to be heard. Recommended!
*see if you can track down the gorgeously packaged 2 disc version of this album which comes in a hardcover book casing and contains some writings, a Divine Comedy timeline and amazing photographs. the second disc contains wonderful rareties and some demo stuff that is also equally essential as the main disc.
A masterclass in POP perfection........2004-09-24
This is a stunning introduction to the world of the Divine Comedy. Its full of catchy hooks, delightful lyrics, stunning arrangement, full of pop splendour and performance. I normally listen to metal, but was introduced to this band at a late night party. And oh how I was converted! This is pop music at its finest, beautiful and melodic, unlike the cynical and bland muck that fill's today's charts. Revel in every moment of this epic album, and then buy the back catalogue, each filled with beautiful songs of love, loss and laughter. Quirky and irrelevent, it amazes me that this Irish group remains relatively unknown while bands from the same country such as U2, The Corrs et.al can continue to produce album after album of patronising crap, which is then gladly lapped up by their guillible fans.
I Fall for This CD Every Time...........2004-08-20
Technically a band, "The Divine Comedy" is centred around singer-songwriter Neil Hannon. Hannon was born in Northern Ireland in 1970 and models his singing style on Scott Walker. Aptly enough for the son of a Bishop, his band provided the theme tune for the classic sitcom "Father Ted". They also recorded a version of "My Lovely Horse", the song Ted and Dougal entered into the Eurosong Contest. (Unfortunately, it isn't included on the album !!). "A Secret History" is the band's greatest hits package, was released in 1999 and covers the band's time on the Setanta label. Two of the tracks had been previously unreleased - "Gin Soaked Boy" and "Too Young to Die".
One of my favourite tracks - "National Express" opens the album. Mocking a British coach firm, it's Neil and the band at their best. A very catchy tune, the witty lyrics and Neil's crooning all add up perfectly. (The song's video was also very funny.) "The Pop Star's Fear of the Pollen Count" is another excellent tune. It's an up-tempo number, with the brass section really adding to the mood of the song. It's immediately followed by "The Frog Princess", apparently about a French ex-girlfriend. Containing snippets of the French National Anthem, the stinging lyrics are so at odds with the gentle tune, I can't help laughing at it. "Everybody Knows (Except You)" and "Gin Soaked Boy" - one of the album's "new" tracks - also deserve special mentions.
Sometimes you find an album so good, it would be easier just to list the occasional 'bad' or slightly average track. While the tracks I've listed above are my favourites, there just aren't any bad tracks here to list. It's an excellent album from start to finish - with a runing time of seventy minutes, it's filled with catchy tunes, very cleverly written lyrics and it will prove to be money very well spent.

From Solo Piano Publications.......2007-05-30
I have been a fan of Craig Urquhart's solo piano albums for quite some time. When we did an interview several years ago for Solo Piano Publications and my own "Pianotes" newsletter, he was obviously very passionate about his performances of "art songs" as well as his own solo work. These art songs are Urquhart's original music set to the poetry that inspires the music. He says that as a composer, he writes the music with a certain type of performance in mind. When he heard tenor Michael Slattery sing Leonard Bernstein's "Maria" at his European debut in Paris, Urquhart felt that he had finally found the perfect voice for his songs. Slattery was very familiar with Urquhart's music, as his CDs were often passed around the hallways of Juilliard, where Slattery recently graduated. They began a collaboration in early 2005, and Slattery suggested that Urquhart intersperse some of his solo work between the songs to continue the mood or introduce a somewhat different tone. The inclusion of the solos was a brilliant idea that makes this CD unique in that it isn't just solo piano or just vocal selections. Urquhart's music tends to be very spare, elegant, and expressive, and Slattery mirrors that approach with his powerful but very sensitive voice. With the piano being the only accompaniment to the vocals, the pieces are more like duets. The poems that were set to music are by Walt Whitman (4), Emily Dickinson (6), Ron Draddy (1), D.H. Lawrence (1), and Hermann Hesse (1). The lyrics are in the liner notes, as are the words of both Michael Slattery and Craig Urquhart, and some biographical information. It's a beautiful package and a fulfilling listening experience - over and over again. Recommended!

It's a little obsure.......2003-02-16
If there's one thing that one can say about Joan Sutherland is that she had the glorious and magnificent voice of all time. One can only imagine the huge ringing ping that instrument left in the world's grandest opera houses. "Vorrei Spiegarvi, oh Dio!" is just the kind of music Joan should be singing -- very flowing legato and stretched out, flowing phrases. However, this song was recorded as the end of her career, which is unfortunate because the Joan Sutherland we knew of the 1960's would have remarkable ease with Mozart's coloratura passages. At 53, her coloratura sounds slightly awkward and she has some difficulty staying above the pitch at all times. But more importantly she is involved in the acting, still has a resplendent and georgeous voice, and makes it just a beautiful beautiful song. It's actually now one of my favorite renditions. "Dich, Teure Halle" from Tannhauser and the Lohengrin arias are sung excellently. The Noel Coward pieces, as cute as they are, become terribly hammy and corney simply as a result of them being included in a compilation of Donizetti, Mozart, Wagner, Rossini, Gounod, and Massenet. The majority of the art songs were recorded late in her career, but there is some interesting interpretation. "Holy Night" is excellent! The beginning text sounds very stiff and you can't understand the words, but as it progresses this has so much feeling and movement. I've never heard her so moved by what's she's singing! The surprise high note at the end makes it all worth it.

Item not received........2006-01-15
I have not received this item yet. It is on back order. I had to rate it so put 3 stars. However sicne it hasn't been received I can't really rate it. You ought to take situations like this into consideration if you're going to do this sort of thing.
A Nice Assortment.......2001-03-13
The CD contains a nice selection of songs from composers who we may not hear that much of. I bought this CD for Copland's Dirge in Woods and it was very nice. But I found some other nice treasures on this CD too. Four vocalists, two males and two females, take on this sometimes very challenging music. The music for the most part is not soft and languid both rather has some what we would think of as mid 20th century types of chords. Unless you're into that kinda of thing, you may not want to get this CD. These aren't master works, but just nice little songs a composer might of written while taking a break between writing operas or symphonies.
Important American art songs performed by superb recitalists.......2000-05-30
This CD, a digital remastering of a recording originally released in 1962, is an extraordinary value for anyone interested in American art song, or simply in fine singing. I bought it because I wanted to hear Eleanor Steber's performance of Griffes's "Waikiki", which did not disappoint. But there are many other wonderful songs, all presented with great artistry. They range from the demanding complexity of Barber's "Nuvoletta" and Ives's "General William Booth Enters into Heaven" to the lyricism of the Ernst Bacon songs to texts by Emily Dickinson. The final song on the CD, John McCollum's performance of Henry Cowell's "The Donkey", is especially memorable; I recommend this version over the one on the Albany label's "Songs of Henry Cowell" CD (which I bought because my interest in Cowell's songs was raised by hearing "The Donkey").
