Customer Reviews:
Hail the Blue Stringrays..........2007-06-16
I first heard these tunes streaming online in 1999 with weak audio, but thought them great regardless. Wished I had the cd. Researching surf tunes, I came across this Blue Stingray cd with the cool artwork, and played the samples. And lo and behold...it was the album I was looking for.
All the tunes are winners and most not covers. The needle dropping down at the start of "Monsoon" is priceless and the crowd scene is reminiscent of a Ventures party album. The tunes are well paced, played effortlessly and well arranged. There is just a slight studio/processed sound to the tunes and a more raw garage type of sound would have enhanced the sound and perhaps better separation of the instruments...but it's cool and crisp sounding regardless. The brief gig sounds, (giggling, loose notes, adjustments etc...) are fun to have been included. It's heavy on the base, the percussion is very good and the tunes have full robust sound.
The cd isn't rushed nor is it brash and aggressive. I'm not a great fan of "High Energy" surf and distortion. This is like a smooth martini with lava lamps, instead of a shot of bourbon at the bar. One can play along with an electric guitar as the cd has catchy melodies. I dig the blue "Blue Stringray" guitar pic that was included in the jewel case.
Even if it isn't a "real" surf album, it should be. It captures the essence of the genre. It isn't pretentious or overbearing and it has early "The Shadows" innocence to it. The cut "Moon Over Catalina" is perfect, I don't get tired of it. And "Surfer's Life" is so serene. "Stingray Stomp" starts out almost like "Bang-a-Gong" and has elements of "Surfer Joe"...too cool.
The Heartbreakers must reconsider and produce more!
A must get for your surf tune collection.
Reverb Paradise Found.......2005-09-26
This is an excellent top-shelf classic old-school surf/spy reverb guitar CD. If you like reverb, you'll love this one. Not as hard-edge as Dick Dale & Link Ray nor as laid back as Aqua Velvets. Somewhere in between. There's not a bad song on this CD and the cool twist is that it has a very retro look and feel even though it was released in 1997 by Tom Petty's back-up band. The track list even refers to "Side 1" and "Side 2" and "33 1/2 RPM" as if it was originally a slab of vinyl. There's even the occasional needle scratch noise inserted between tracks. Very Cool. Man, If I could only find the guitar tabs to these songs!
Rad.......2005-03-06
This is some great surf music here. No throwaway tunes. The latter half starts to sound a little more rockabilly, but never loses it's surf sound. Don't expect fast, uppity tunes, the songs are mid paced to slower, but don't let that discourage you. It's all very catchy and great for kicking back to. A gambleless purchase.
Awesome surf music..........2004-07-30
First - the reviewer Ralf hit it dead on the head in his review, just by giving you guys some hints about who this band actually is. If you can't put 2 and 2 together, these guys are The Heartbreakers, i.e., Tom Petty's band. No real mystery here, and I had this fact disclosed years ago when this cd first came out. Sorry if that ruins any of the mystique for you.
Anyway, the other reviewers are right about this for the most part. It is flawless, excellent, fantastic surf music. Straight out of the Del-Fi school of surf music. Old-school, whatever you call it. It is beautiful, it is timeless, it is gorgeous, it is fantastic. Definitely pick this up.
Also, don't know if they are still doing it, but back when this cd first came out, it came with a blue "Blue Stingrays" guitar pick. Maybe it still does. If so, that's just another little added incentive for you to get this...or not. But I'm sure that if you pick this up, you won't regret it.
No character........2004-07-08
Sorry, but I actually hate that this record is so perfect. Perfect performances. Perfect sounds. Perfect engineering. Perfect everything. Over-produced makes it synthetic and stale. Surf needs a little character in my opinion. Bottom line is that it's perfectly boring.
