Respect.......2007-05-07

A must have for any real Social D and Mike Ness fan. It is a little different after being accustomed to Social Distortion albums, but listen to the music and don't focus on the genre. I'm a fan of many types of music, a huge fan of Johnny Cash, and I am always glad to see someone follow their heart instead of what is popular. "Under the Influences" is a testimony to those who came before us, so don't buy it expecting that Social D edge. Buy it because you want to hear some good classic songs sung by a legend.

It's pretty bad when it takes a punk rocker to make a great country album. But that's exactly what happened and thank god it did.
"Let the jukebox keep on playing" is one of th ebest country cover songs of all time.

mike on his own rocks, but this has a huge "country" type feel to it, if you're not into johnny cash.. or willing to go beyond a punker boy sound.. this isn't for you. mike's voice still rocks, but the country feel might turn some fans off. for those that liked cheating at solitair this is a good bet. this would be a great addition/gift for anyone that likes country rock

Old school country with an edge.......2005-11-29

Mike Ness' Under the influences is just that, true influences for every style of music. When I bought this cd the second thing I did was buy all of the origional material and it all blew my mind. Every song made to honor the origional artist. Remaking the likes of Marty Robbins, Johnny Cash, and the Clash is a hard task for anyone, a task that should not be taken litely. This cd brings more than just good music it brings an added repect for the songs of the past, the songs that helped make the music of today. Overall a good buy.

kickin country covered.......2005-11-24

Mike's done a great job of introducing some old school classics to a new generation of punks. Teaching them that not all country is bad. Forget the Garths & Shanias & give a listen to some true tales of hard luck & heartbreak. He's covered the man in black on a S.D. album so to hear this was a great boot in the ass. I also picked up another great CD of cover songs by Luke the drifter himself called Timeless, a tribute to Hank Williams that would fit in the player right along side this one.

AMG EXPERT REVIEW: Due to releases like Jerusalem Under Fire, Israeli percussionist Badawi (real name Raz Mesinai) has become one of the world's most renowned Middle Eastern percussionists. He's become an influential figure for the New York City trip-hop (or illbient) style of underground dancehall/dub music, a scene that has spawned the likes of DJ Spooky, DJ Olive, and a host of others. Amazingly, almost all the sounds you hear on Jerusalem Under Fire are played by Badawai himself, who handles percussion, flute, and effects duties, as well as supplying the string arrangements and remixing and rearranging the songs. Two other musicians (violinist Simi Sernaker and tabla player Karsh Kale) help fill out the already rich sound, while all of the compositions are entirely instrumental. Highlights are many, but the very best would have to be the constant violin swirl of "Soldier of Midian," and the percussion-driven opening track "Critical Combustion," and the traditional reggae sounds of "Kill the Messenger." — Greg Prato (All Music Guide)

Any lover of dub music who is bored with the current orthodoxy of Mad Professor/Massive Attack-type Brit techno-dub should check out Badawi and his return to the old-school roots of reggae. Echoing such dub masters as Scientist and King Tubby, Badawi manages to be creative and innovative not only by putting an Arab, percussion-heavy slant on dub tracks, but also by mixing up the tempo and instrumentation of the songs to cross over with styles like rocksteady and rai. This album is a must-have for all fans of dub, as well as fans of all world music crossovers and synthesis in general. Also, if you like Badawi but would prefer lyrics (in French, English and Arabic), you should check out the French band "Gnawa Diffusion".

Under-Rated X is a little known band that just hasn't had the stars align for them - yet. The musicianship is masterful; razor-sharp guitar runs; the type of outstanding percussion you only hear in the best progressive rock bands; and rock solid, tight bass. In a time when rock is dominated by sloppy emo, Under-rated X offers some of the best new progressive rock/hard rock put out in the past 10 years. Keep your eyes on them. We can expect more from this group of talented progressive rockers.
