4 out of 5 stars Sparks find their heavy sound, with mixed results. CD mastering blemished by technical glitch.......2007-01-10

Please Note: This review is of the 2006 remastered version of Big Beat.
One track (Throw her away And Get A New One) has a technical glitch created during remastering and ends prematurely. All other previously released versions of Big Beat play normally.

The rating of four stars is for an otherwise beautiful job of remastering + the bonus tracks, a nice booklet and of course the original tracks which appeared on Sparks wonderfully quirky 1976 release - Big Beat.

Having conquered England's shores circa 73-75 riding the crest of "This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both Of Us", California born anglophiles Ron and Russell Mael packed up and moved back stateside for further dalliances with pop stardom. Their second attempt (first being 2 rare yet exquisite records from 72-73) to capture the whims of U.S. audiences was '76's "Big Beat" produced by Rupert Holmes who would much later score with bar favorite "Pina Colada" (the song, not the drink). Having now orchestrated their relocation back to the U.S., Sparks then proceeded to hire a new band for this outing. After first recruiting Ziggy's sidekick Mick Ronson who began rehearsals but then dropped out due to scheduling conflicts, the Mael boys finally settled on guitarist Jeff Salen formerly of Tuff Darts. Already on board were sometime Roxy Music bassist Sal Maida and session drummer Hilly boy Michaels. The new three piece guitar, bass and drum driven sound surprisingly, often relegates Ron's keyboard flourishes deeply back in the mix. And likewise doing away with what had been a Sparks trademark of complex, soaring queen-like arrangements and multi-part harmonies. Big Beat explores a more simple, heavy, straight forward and basic rock sound in great contrast to their previous bombastic, falsetto hyper-drive displayed gloriously with great effect on previous efforts: "Kimono My House", "Propaganda" and "Indiscreet".

Big Beat was to be Sparks's reintroduction to their American audience and was intended to jumpstart their conquest on the American pop charts. But while the Sparks "brothers" had been busy tapping into the brit-pop glam bubbling across the pond, the American audiences were now drinking heavily of the disco de-light. With Donna Summer, the BeeGees and the like topping the charts with their dance oriented studio 54 sound, the Sparks sparse guitar driven pop could not make a ripple inching only minimally onto FM hard rock stations where favorites Peter Frampton, Boston and Pink Floyd ruled the air.

30 years on, Big Beat now rests comfortably between Sparks triumphant 3 minute whirling dervish pop days and their then soon to be forthcoming New Wave electronic soaked reincarnation beginning with '79's "Number One Song In Heaven"

This newly remastered CD captures the Maels in all their stripped down glory, spotlighting "Big Boy", "Fill-er-Up" (both ably played on the big screen in 76's disaster-pic "Rollercoaster" which must be seen if only for Ron Mael's on-stage demolition of his piano stool ala Pete Townsend), "Nothing to Do", "I Want to Be Like Everybody Else" and FM fave - "Everybody's Stupid". However a technical glitch in "Throw Her Away And Get A New One" causes a premature and abrupt ending, thereby ruining one of the best songs on the album. This was not just a simple skip, which may be attributable to my receiving a defective disk, but is inherent in the mastering. I have not yet tried to return it, but would be curious to know if Island Records is planning on recalling this disk. On the plus side, the six additional tracks make this CD even more fun as "Intrusion/Confusion" and "Looks Aren't Everything" are being released for the first time. Intrusion...being a pre Big Beat version of "Confusion" that was written for French director Jasques Tati's un-named film which, sadly was never completed. This version is a bit more rumba-like and sheds a whole new light on the song. In addition there is a slick 10 page booklet with plenty of photos, 45 cover shots, lyrics and enlightening commentary by Daryl Easlea.

Big Beat marked a distinct musical departure for the Mael's and like many style breaking leaps, it failed on many levels, not the least of which was popular appeal. But while the sound did not take hold in the pre-punk American ears, the songs still hold up well and stayed true to the Mael boys propensity for off-handed lyrical jaunts and unexpectedly vaudevillesque-like song structures. That 1976 era Sparks attribute has remained their true calling card and what keeps them still vital in the overcrowded yet oft-underwhelming cavalcade of pop music.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Pure Diversity.......2006-09-10

It may take a while to grow on you but `Milk It' really is one of the most diverse cd's by a single artist that money can buy. Obviously there are several collaborations here (Iggy Pop and Liam Gallager's contributions being highlights) and they all work really well. DIV have covered so many genres that you will rarely have to change cd's. They go from rock n' roll to an electro `Orbital'/`Chrystal Method' sound, to chill out and back again. I can't stop listening, it's brilliant.

4 out of 5 stars High Protein.......2006-03-13

After the disappointing monotony of their latest album Satan's Circus, it's a pleasure to find Death In Vegas' former record company ransacking the archives for an obligatory hits collection that finds the duo at their ominous best. Amassed from only three albums, the psychedelic dance rock freak-outs gathered here are scorching reminders of the act's successful attempts to meld rock and electronica into an at times brutal and deathly pact with the Devil. Iggy Pop is possessed by an evil spirit on his vocal contribution Aisha, initial Death In Vegas breakthrough success Dirt and its muddy bassline still sound fresh and Hands Around My Throat is the best piece of S&M electroclash yet put to tape, with the diametric needy/controlling vocal of Adult's Nicole Kuperus being strangely hypnotic and alluring. Paul Weller fronting a cover of The Byrd's So You Say You've Lost Your Baby still seems strangely at odds with the forward-thinking nature of Richard Fearless and Tim Holmes' usual creations, but fellow UK music icon Bobby Gillespie makes up for the Weller lowpoint by issuing the freaked out vocal of Soul Auctioneer. The bonus disc of remixes fulfils the role of giving less aware listeners a window into the avenues Death In Vegas have previously explored on b-sides, with Dirt (Mullet Mix) restoring the Woodstock samples of the original version and Rocco (Dave Clarke Mix) predating Moby's Play with its use of haunting samples of Negro soul singers. The Oasis material that Death In Vegas produced last year may never see the light of day after disputes with Oasis lead to Fearless and Holmes' removal from the project, yet their own skills are at their best here on the low fat, high protein Milk It.

5 out of 5 stars 1997-2002.......2005-08-30

This is a good collection of Death In Vegas' music from 1997 to 2002. The first disc is a collection of their hits culled from their first three albums DEAD ELVIS (1997), THE CONTINO SESSIONS (1999) and SCORPIO RISING (2002). The second disc is filled with remixes of their well known hits. Overall a nice retrospective and good place for new fans to start out, or for other fans to have all the hits on one disc, as well as the remixes.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Dame Bassey Stays In Tune.......2003-06-27

When Shirley Bassey, at the age of 60, was approached by the Propellerheads to do "History Repeating", she initially turned them down and suggested that they give the song to Tina Turner. However they insisted that the song was written and arranged for her, and Bassey finally agreed to record it. The results of this dancible Propellerheads/Bassey jazz hit, is a whole new legion of Gay fans and youth in general. The song became part of the soundtrack for the movie "There's Something About Mary", and was also used in a Jaguer commercial, helping to re-introduced Bassey's voice to a lot of Americans who are to young to remember "Goldfinger". "History Repeating" can also be found on Shirley Bassey's "Greatest Hits" CD. You can see the making of the music video for "History Repeating" on Shirley Bassey's concert DVD "Divas Are Forever". The music video itself is no longer available. Hopefully it will be re-released someday.

5 out of 5 stars Pure excitement..........2002-01-04

The UK's Propellerheads take Shirley Bassey's awesome voice and make it the centrepiece of one of the most distinctive & exciting club tracks you'll ever hear: clever mixing and an insidious backbeat that fully exploit the power of the 60's diva's delivery to catapult her straight into the late 90's. Want to dance?... then look no further!

4 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2001-09-05

Even if there is only 3 mixes on this cd single, it's simply the best SONG the Propellerheads have managed to create. Bassey, of course, sells it like her life depends on it, et voila! Instant Classic! Play it for any age group: 3 generations of my family have grooved to it.

5 out of 5 stars Worth repeating.......2000-06-15

I heard this song more than a year ago in a college dance show and became obsessed with finding it. Then I learned that it was included on the 'There's Something About Mary' soundtrack but I wasn't interested in buying the entire CD for one song, so I can't tell you how excited I am to see that it's available as an import. Best enjoyed in your car at full blast, with the windows down!

I have this 2CD it is good but what is odd is that most of the songs are in fact quite old eg 1950 and 1960's music. Highlights are Es Paradis by The Fatman himself and Super Sharp Shooter by Dj hype and Cut La Roc's New York Pimp and Wax Assassins baddest dj on two turntables. A warning most of the songs are quite short.

4 out of 5 stars Slinky is club not a person!.......2005-02-13

Igor (see other review) your comments are interesting but just to correct you Slinky is not a DJ, its a club night based in the Opera House nightclub Bournemouth UK, which happens to be 5 min down the road from me. Its always mad for me whan I see that their CDs are sold over the world, it just feels like my local bar for me (with a great soundtrack of course). This CD is a good snapshot of what was being played a few years back.

5 out of 5 stars This is one of the best CD's you can buy.......2002-02-11

There are a lot of good tracks on the CD1 that I had never heard of before the day I buy the Cd...you must buy it!

5 out of 5 stars illuminating party experience.......2001-10-28

This album is a lot of fun...- heavy blows of hard-core progressive trance and techno. Slinky plays variety of great, extremely well mixed music, even though some tracks don't sound extremely innovative. He does what needs to be done however: he pumps adrenaline into your blood, puts you on your feet and makes you dance.
This double CD set is great if you want to turn your home into a club. I am a fan of hard clubbing, a person who generally doesn't find most of Ibiza compilation CDs satisfying..too popsy... A lot of them are spoiled by stupid lyrics that I often find not necessary- especially if it's a sweet woman's voice singing love nonsense put against hard beat(I don't mind when lyrics are haunting or dark- it fits the music style, get it?- again, it's only my personal preference- you might find it appealing). It happens here too- unfortunately in the most crucially important moment- the beginning.. "I need to have you near me"- she starts and for a moment you think "What the...". Luckily, Slinky gets back on a track soon and corrects that mistake by using a very limited amount of vocals, otherwise I'd shoot myself for buying another "cheese-ball" as I call them. Slinky is not as sophisticated as Sacha, Nick Warren or Danny BUT you can hear that he truly enjoys what he does and it's so important because you definitely get the vibe! Ultimately, you just dance mindlessly through both amazing CDs......

4 out of 5 stars Can't be "beat!" (aw that was a terrible pun).......2006-03-09

The only thing not "worth it" on this CD is the price. Thirty-something bucks is a bit steep. (I got it at a Virgin Megastore for &10!) Otherwise, a great CD with Kerouac readings interspersed with bop's greatest hits. The excerpts provide a lucid yet credible backbone (assuming you can take them seriously, not as period-piece fodder) for the body of works. The essay is also transcribed in the hefty booklet. My only complaint aside from the price is that it's an oversized box which doesn't fit into a CD rack.

But why complain when you have Dizzy, Miles Davis, Hamp, and Monk at hand!? You can't!

    5 out of 5 stars It's the dog's bollocks! (i.e. "very cool").......2000-06-01

I just spent an academic semester in London and knew I had to get a CD that would be a great momento of my London clubbing nights. I picked out this double CD, not knowing 75% of the artists or songs, but it hasn't disappointed me in the least. I've been listening to it atleast once a day (a sign of a good choice and investment), and I've brought it with me to liven quite a few parties. A brilliant dance-party generator!

5 out of 5 stars Great Mix of Music.......2000-01-03

This is a very good mix of music that is or has played in the United Kingdom. I highly recommend it.

This CD is for that funky crowd that likes to boogie everywhere! It just makes you wanna get up and dance. Deejay Punk-roc has always put out some good stuff but every track on this album is good. I can't get enough of it. Get it now now now! "Blow my mind" is my current favorite song. Funky and reminiscent of a good hiphop house party...
