Album Description
This special edition of Brazilian Love Affair 5 features no less than 8 exclusive tracks from Far Out artists - both established classic names as well as fresh new talent. Whether it's the hazy vibes of an afternoon by the beach with Democustico's 'O Sonho', a smoky evening at infamous Rio jazz club Misturafina with Azymuth's 'Te Querendo', or a late night burning up the dancefloor with Grupo Batuqueâ's jubilant 'Ida E Volta', each one perfectly captures the winter heat of Brazil.
Label main-man Joe Davis also dug deep in the Far Out crates for a few gems from the past: Azymuth's Jose Roberto Bertrami and Aleuda team up for a slice of catchy eccentric fusion with 'Itacuruca', the ever reliable Roc Hunter has his Mamond project revisited with the sublime 'Cafe Sem' and the previously deleted Kyoto Jazz Massive remix of Friend's From Rio's 'Sob O Marâ' also gets a welcome rewind.

Loaded with Fresh Material.......2004-11-07
I've been a fan of Far Out Record's artsits for some time. But the Brazilian Love Affair CD's were a series that seemed to elude me. And what a shame that was, since this series is actually one of the very best in the market of nu-Brazilian music. The series now spans 5 volumes, six if you include the Kenny Dope mixed tribute, and the 5th volume is every bit as worthy an entry as the others. What I look for in the compilations are the exclusive cuts and tracks. This one was anything but short of those with the first 6 cuts being originals, 8 overall out of 13!
Of course Far Out has an advantage over many of the others in that the cuts are often features from their label's artists. The CD starts out with Democustico's "O Sonho", a track that admittedly didn't really grab me even though Gabriela Geluda's voice reminded me of Janice Andrade's. Troubleman's "Paz" followed up - a very cool and dark cut featuring Nina Miranda (Smoke City) on vocals. Want something eerily similar - check Arkestra One's "I Really Want You". Os Ipanemas and Azymuth, heroes for Far Out Records, come up some downtempo loungish cuts - good for setting the mood. I didn't fall for the remix to "Suspeita", but I really dug "Te Querendo"; you can feel Roc Hunter's influence and I can't wait to hear the vocal on Azymuth's 30 year anniversary cd! Another gem was Sabrina Malheiro's "Estacao Verao" which has a pure Brazil loop to her singing and musicianship that I loved - although the Kenny Dope remix gives it an awesome bossa beat. Meanwhile "Chuva"'s rather solid although I preferred the clubbed up, latin guitar remix found on Brazilution 5.2. Finally... what's a Far Out compilation without Joyce or Marcos Valle? Quality music with Joyce's trademark dancing vocals but this time done with the coolness of Bugge Weseltoft. What more can I say about Joyce without exposing my obvious bias! Supremely talented and amazingly creative singer. And Marcos Valle - what a fantastic comeback he's had since the late 90's.
I highly recommend not just this volume, but the entire "Brazilian Love Affair" series. There are many other good tuens here - check Grupo Batuque's "Ida E Volta", a cut that pulls parallels with their "Taruma" or how about the nice vocal work done in "Tarde Em Itacuraca"? That's not to say that this CD wasn't totally without fault - I dig the Kyoto Jazz Massive remix to Nair Candia/Jaime Alem's "Sob O Mar" but for some reason, Brazilian Love Affair chopped the first 12 seconds of the remix. I didn't like that mainly becuase that percussion build-up is a signature of Kyoto Jazz Massive's sound and it's like an art to their music - just check their "Calmaria". That's not enough to drop it down some pegs, and if you dig this release and the other BLA's, you might also like the individual releases by the artists involved, the Kenny Dope tribute (oddly, vol. 5 is also listed as a tribute), Brazilution 5.2 and "Brazilian Love Songs".

Customer Reviews:
a good collection, mastering is mediocre.......2001-06-16
This disc contains a lot of good tracks (and alternate mixes) from the days before EBTG became a dance music group. I really love the alternate mixes of "Take Me" and "Twin Cities".
I will point out, however, that if you bought this disc in its first version, there is no real reason to "upgrade" to this remastered version. The same problems appear (small tape dropouts in a couple of tracks, and the strange cutting in and out of the lower frequencies on "Each And Every One"). I was hoping that they had actually remastered this disc from scratch and improved it, but such is not the case. The remastered "Eden" disc doesn't suffer from the same audio problem on "Each and Every One", so clearly it isn't an issue of the source tape being damaged or unavailable.
as for other EBTG collections.......2001-04-04
As for other EBTG collections, this proves to be a must have just because of the tracks that you can't get from any other album.
I also love that this collection includes some of their more poignant songs from the language of love album(my personal fave).
A must for collectors and true blue tracey/ben fans. All posers would be clearly satisfied by the HOME MOVIES collection, which shows their more accessible POP side. This is a good collection before they went all dance music crazy on us. :(

Customer Reviews:
This is a neglected masterpiece........2006-08-03
I'm a big fan of Donovan. However, many reviews I have read in the past tend to dismiss this album. All I can say is I cannot understand why: this is the best Donovan album I have ever heard. I'm pleased to see it get support here on Amazon.
Every song on Essence To Essence is at least very good, most are top drawer, but the wonder of this album is that it gets stonger with each listen, yet you'll also love it from the very start! Also, unlike many albums where the songs become boring halfway through, this one seems to get even better towards the end !
The songs are varied, with great arrangements, playing and Donovan's frankly outstanding singing voice gets a great workout here, sometimes soaring that high that I wonder how he does it.
'Yellow Star' is a commercial sounding song, with a great message, and should have been a huge hit.
'Divine Daze...' is mystical and may not immediately appeal, but it will eventually! This song is from another world...
'Boy For Every Girl' is a beautiful and very catchy song, starting with a lovely guitar figure, and if you have a special somebody in your life Fellas, you will identify with this. How many writers could create a song and handle the subject with such sensitivity? Not many....
'Saint Valentine's Angel' ought to be the anthem for Valentine's Day, such is it's beauty. There is some wonderful lead guitar work here, but the whole of the track is perfection.
'Life Is A Merry Go Round' is another lyrically excellent song with a killer melody. 'Make up your mind to be happy', sings Donovan, and you will be after listening to this song and album. Donovan certainly 'gets happy' on the end of this song !
'Sailing Homeward' is another beautiful (a word that gets used a lot when talking about Donovan!) song. A perfect end to the album. I cannot do justice in words to this great song.
Then there are the other songs.... I hope you'll get to hear them one day.
Great Memories!!!.......2005-05-06
Only 4/5 stars ,because nothing is perfect.CD is shining (quality-wise),as I remember it being;not as 'warm' as the analogue LP, but as 'full' as the quad-discrete 8 track.I saw Donovan live in Toronto shortly after the release of the LP;great memories- a good time in my life! I have read some criticism of this album but I love it!I've been a fan of Mr. Leitch's music since I heard "sunshine Superman" in the mid-Sixties. Also I am a fellow Glaswegian.

Spirit Horizon.......2004-11-13
"Essence to Essence" is my favorite Donovan album. It was not his commercial blockbuster. However, it is the set that communicates great inner peace and a world vision of a loving planet; therefore, it is Donovan's most idealistic moment, his highest achievement. Only "Sailing Homeward" is usually represented in retrospective collections, yet there are three of his best songs here. The most exquisite is "There Is An Ocean," one of the deepest most meditative, exquisitely beautiful songs ever written. Donovan's acoustic guitar strums softly as Danny Thompson's bass fiddle communicates tones of darkness interplaying with the light, "Innocence in childhood false men misconstrue to be years of darkess spent in shade, denying childhood's vision of the God of Love so that Truth be turned about and untruth made." This is incredibly deep. With the turn of a phrase and the inflection of his guitar, Donovan communicates musically what theologians write volumes to replicate. The track is followed by the joyful and light "The Dignity of Man" with Donovan's vocals full of conviction and love, "Sing of proud black brother, sing of pale faced son, sing the joy of a mother; She's the Mother of Everyone." This is Donovan's great celebration of humanity as children of the Divine. The album closer "Sailing Homeward" is another gorgeous melody, deep & contemplative, making me think of the final voyage as we leave our Earth existence into the uncharted waters of the spirit horizon. The other tracks on the CD bop and bend like "Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth" with its cosmic advocacy for environmental friendliness. "Lazy Daze" is a carefree romp with that jovial lyric, "She's looking for a tan with a real sensitive man, burn her bra, simply rest her jeans." "Life Goes On," another of my favorites, has pulsing rhythm and a joyful chorus. "Yellow Star" is a cosmic spaceship track with Henry McCullough's electric guitar snaking through the melody. "Boy for Every Girl" and "Saint Valentine's Angel" are joyful tunes celebrating romantic love. "Life Is A Merry-Go-Round" is another wonderful classic Donovan melody with its simple but riveting message, "Make up your mind to be happy." With Donovan's new "Beat Cafe" recently released, this Master musician is still making essential music. "Essence to Essence" stands out for me as Donovan's most important album, his greatest message. Bravo!
An uneven, but essential album.......2002-11-24
Donovan's 1973-1980 era may have resulted in inferior albums to what he was doing in the 60's but there's still some classic songs that he wrote during that era. "Essence to Essence" finds him experimenting more with exceeding the boundaries of his vocal limitations. This album is split right up the middle. There's some excellent melodic pieces that are some of his best ever. But in the same token, there's some very weak songs. I noticed Donovan experimenting more with a falsetto. Sadly, that falsetto (along with the lyrics) ended up spoiling the song "Boy for every girl" which really has a nice cozy nostalgic 70's melody. If it were not for the silly lyrics and his falsetto (which sometimes sounds like Tiny Tim on a bad day), this song would have been a classic. However, enough with the negative, there's 2 songs on this album that make the album essential. "There is an Ocean" and the closing track "Sailing Homeward". These 2 songs rank right up there with the best songs that Donovan did from any period-era. Definitely worth the purchase. The other 9 tracks are mostly mediocre songs with some very good moments sprinkled thruought. Don't expect anything near his classic output from the 60's or "Open Road"/"HMS". I have not heard "Cosmic Wheels". Never-the-less, this album ranks a *** for me due to 2 major classic songs, some good/decent songs and some horrible songs.
The very best of Donovan.......2002-07-26
One of the few Donovan albums that truely highlights his vocal abilities. "Sailing Homeward" and "There Is An Ocean" are two of his best written songs from this time period. Almost as much variety to the song styles on this CD as his rarely seen LP "7-Tease". If you like Dono, even just a little bit, get this CD. You'll be glad you did.
A Donvoan follower from the good old days, I have to disagree with John Skillcorn. I loved Sutras. Except for the Clear-Browed One, I think it is a great CD. Wish I could seay the same for Neutronica.
