This is one of the greatest albums I have ever heard. Southside and the Jukes at the top of their game. It will break your heart and make you feel things that you didn't know you could feel anymore.

4 out of 5 stars Hot Jersey Rock.......2007-02-01

Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes are at their peak on this LP.The
title cut "Heart's of Stone" is one of the most soulful & unforgettable
song's your ever gonna hear, combined with hot rocker's like "Talk to Me"
& "Take it Inside" make this CD a bargain at any price. The final cut
"Light Don't Shine"is a big time tear your heart out & lay it on the
table killer. All in all this collection is smokin & a must have for 70's
Rock-n-Roll afficianados!

5 out of 5 stars There But for the Grace.......2006-02-10

As the saying goes, "Timing is Everything" and I can't help but feel that with a couple breaks and a little good timing, Southside Johnny might have become the big 70s & 80s mega superstar from New Jersey instead of the BOSS. Don't get my wrong, I love Springsteen. I just think Southside Johnny and the Jukes deserved better.

Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes were the second band after Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band to emerge from the New Jersey area. Though they carried a significant influence, including key personnel, from Springsteen and company, they were basically a White R&B brass band in the Bill Chase, Blood Sweat and Tears tradition.

This album is the most successful merger of old R&B with modern songwriting and sensibilities in the Jukes' catalog. "Hearts of Stone" features many great Van Zandt originals "Got to Be a Better Way Home", "Trapped Again", "I Played the Fool", "This Time Baby's Gone for Good" and my favorite "Take it Inside".

As evidence the Springsteen and Southside Johnny were close, Springsteen either wrote or had a hand in three of the songs.

As much as I like and admire Springsteen, I don't think I like any Springsteen album any better than "Hearts of Stone"

Hearts of Stone is the best album Bruce Springsteen never recorded. Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes were a hard-working Jersey rock-'n'-soul outfit who happened to count E-Streeter Miami Steve Van Zandt among its alumni. Van Zandt continued to contribute to the band as a writer, producer, and musician even after he'd joined Springsteen's band, and brought his boss aboard for this 1978 triumph. (Springsteen also penned numbers for the group's good-but-not-great first and second albums.) Springsteen and Van Zandt contributed all nine songs here and the lot of them--from the brassy, tenacious opener "Got to Be a Better Way Home" to the mournful coda, "Light Don't Shine"--are winners. Van Zandt cut his ties with the Jukes following Hearts of Stone and the group never found a new source of great material. But for one album, the light did shine for these Jersey journeymen. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars One Trick Pony? .......2006-05-31

Hearts of Stone is a great album. To appreciate this music, it should be played LOUD. I arrived on campus at FDU and the following week-end, Southside played at what was then called the castle - the Rutherford Campus of Fairleigh Dickinson University. That is all gone today, but the incredible blues sound of Johnny Lyon and the Jukes remains. While the subsequent albums do not reach the level of Hearts OF Stone, this is excellent work and should be in your collection -- and played LOUD!

5 out of 5 stars Great, Soulful White R&B.......2005-01-29

HEARTS OF STONE is a great, soulful white rhythm & blues record from Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes. Taking its cues from the Memphis-Chicago-Muscle Shoals-St. Louis-New Orleans-Detroit-Philadelphia-Kansas City blues/R&B/rock & roll axis, fellow New Jerseyite Bruce Springsteen, and Van Morrison, Southside and Steve Van Zandt, with some help from the Boss himself, craft a horn-based rock style that totally avoids the slickness of such brass-rock bands as Chicago and Blood, Sweat & Tears by keeping the vocals and instruments emotionally involved while avoiding the overemoting that many "blue-eyed soul" singers are guilty of, telling tales of fractured, or at least uncertain, relationships. It can be fairly said that there is outdoor and indoor music; this is the latter. This CD isn't for the kids; it's for the grownups who've survived it all and have tales to tell.

5 out of 5 stars Best ever from the Jersey Shore.......2004-09-13

A guy I once worked with - a long time ago - in Birmingham, AL was a Red Bank native. I had remarked that the whole Jersey shore thing was captured by Southside Johnny like now one else. After he re-attached his jaw which had just hit the floor, he sputtered something about no Iowa plowboy living in Alabama should have even heard of Southside Johnny. He was right. I shouldn't have, but I did. And I had the Hearts of Stone LP to prove it. Still do.

Point is, whether it is John Cafferty (Eddie and the Cruisers), Bruce Springsteen, or Manfred Mann (or Bon Jovi either), no one had it down better than Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes.

Springsteen's contributions to the career of Manfred Mann (Blinded by the Light, Spirit in the Night) was no fluke. He also contributed to this album, including the title track. Little Stevie van Zandt had a huge hand in this album, between songwriting, arranging, and production credits. Another E Streeter, Max Weinberg, was the drummer.

So, how is this not just another Springsteen album? Southside Johnny's vocals (smoother, more style, more range of emotion) for one. Brilliant horn arrangements that would have pleased another Red Bank native, William "Count" Basie. Somehow, it just all came together. It was special. It was magic. It was the fullness of the Jersey Shore sound captured in a single album that (almost) nobody has even heard of.

This is John Myers, one of the original Hearts of Stone... I am still writing, singing, and performing. The other members, Floyd Lawson, Lindsey Griffin, and Carl Cutler are all in good health and enjoying life... Floyd lives in Canada, Lindsey is in Mississippi, and Carl is in Philadelphia... I am in Knoxville, TN where my wife and I write and perform. We had a group reunion a few years ago, and plan on another one in the near future... Let me hear from you... Myers1977@bellsouth.net

Don't hesitate - just gettit! IF u r lucky enuf 2 c in vinyl form u will pay a mint 4 it - hell its worth it!!
Hearts of Stone have just gotta b the unluckiest soul group EVER. This album, particularly my outstanding track IF I CUD GIVE U THE WORLD, is a slab of the finest soul - 35 years on and STILL sounds superb. They got caught up in the move of Motown from Detroit 2 LA and .... the rest is history.
Don't know anything else 'bout them, whether they folded or not or reformed.
Sometimes an album just blows you away and this is 1 of them! OK so all the tracks aren't original material but what the heck - soooooo soulful and a major disaster that they didn't make it big, very big indeed. Can't praise it enuf.

This is one of the best mixes of old favorites and original new songs that has been released recently. William Ward's rendition of "Your Summer Dream" and "Let It Be Me" are wonderfully done. His original "Stone Cold Hearts" is one of my favorite cuts. I also liked "Laurie, Strange Things Happen".

5 out of 5 stars Kisses sweeter than wine.......2004-06-24

I caught a performance by Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes on late night television back in the mid 70's and was instantly enthralled. Watching that performance I couldn't imagine how they could miss, and I sat back and waited for them to explode. Somehow it managed to never happen, but that didn't stop me from enjoying these three albums when they came out and died with a whimper. Over the years I've made many a Jukes compilation, but this trio of albums always comprised the bulk of the selections. There was some good stuff to come later, but it never quite reached this level again. The band's rendition of the Springsteen penned "The Fever" made the Boss's version sound wheezy and asthmatic. Other killer performances in this set are This Time It's for Real, Without Love, Love on the Wrong Side of Town, Talk to Me, and Trapped Again. Don't get me wrong, those are just the cream. The rest of the crop is pretty tasty too.

THESE ARE THE FIRST, AND BEST OF THE JUKES CATALOG.
OH SURE, THERE ARE SOME OTHER GOODIES.....AT LEAST WE HAVE SHOES, BEEN A LONG TIME, AND SOME OF JOHNNYS SOLO STUFF.
BUT THE ESSENCE OF WHAT MADE THE JUKES THE WORLDS GREATEST BAR BAND IS FOUND OVER AND OVER AGAIN ON THESE FIRST THREE ALBUMS.
I DONT WANNA GO HOME, LITTLE GIRL SO FINE, HEARTS OF STONE, TRAPPED AGAIN, SOME THINGS JUST DONT CHANGE, AND THE GREAT JOB ORIGINAL DRUMMER KENNY PENTAFALO DOES ON CHECK MR POPEYE.
I SLOPPED A LOT OF BOOZE AND PLAYED A LOT OF GIGS ON THE JERSEY BAR SCENE BACK IN THE DAY. EVEN HAD PASTA DINNER WITH SOUTHSIDE, ED SCHOCKY, AND RONNIE SPECTOR AT TRAVILINGINIS RESTURANTE ON RT 49. THESE GUYS DIDNT JUST PLAY IT- THEY LIVED IT. SSJ AND TH AJ'S GAVE ALL US BAR BANDS HOPE THAT IF YOU JUST KEPT HACKING, SOMETHING GOOD WOULD COME OUT OF IT.
      THANKS GUYS.

5 out of 5 stars They got the fever...........2001-05-29

When Southside Johnny and his Jukes came roaring out of Asbury Park on the tail (some said coat tail) of Bruce Springsteen in 1976 I didn't expect much from them. Afterall, how many great bands could one tiny music scene produce. Well the answer is two great bands. "I Don't Want To Go Home',and "This Time It's For Real got massive turntable rotation at my digs during the second half of the seventies. Steve Van Zandt (E Streeter,Little Steven,The Sopranos, but you knew that) not only produced and played on these albums, he also contributed winning original songs to the eclectic mix of covers. On "I Don't Want To Go Home" the big winners are the title cut, Bruce's "Fever" and a duet with the late great Lee Dorsey on 'How Come You Treat Me So Bad' that is simply hilarious. The second album of this trio is not quite as seamless as the first but it contains more terrific Van Zandt tunes and some raucous collaborations with The Coasters, The Drifters, and the Five Satins. Sound fun? Fun! I never was able to truly embrace the third record as much as the first two. Produced by Juke guitarist Billy Rush it drops most of the humor and self effacement that made this band so attractive to me. Still they're terrific musicians and Johnny sings his heart out here, and as a part of the total package, "Hearts Of Stone" is more than welcome in my CD tray. To my ears they never surpassed this triad of records and this box set is a genorously priced gift to Southside fans everywhere. Get it and get the fever too.

5 out of 5 stars This music is for real.......2000-01-09

A culmination of all the lust and loss ever sung by all the Jersey bar bands I've ever heard. Their sound is the best music to ever come out of New Jersey and that's saying alot. You'd swear you knew guys like them back in the neighborhood and here they are singing about people and times you grew up with. Raucous, bluesy, soulful, smart music with fabulous harmonies you can't help but sing along with. "Trapped Again" is my favorite Southside song, if not my favorite of all time. Good time music if ever there was.

5 out of 5 stars one cliche "they don't make em like this anymore".......1999-09-14

I first turned onto Southside and the Jukes in the eighth grade (the only one of my peers of course) but I knew i'd found something special. this music has always served, to me, as a paradigm of what great music and a great band should sound like.

Walking Wounded is one of the most important bands around today. And they just keep getting better. Artificial Hearts is a masterpiece. Rock 'n' roll as it should be.

4 out of 5 stars Musical Tour de Force from Walking Wounded.......2002-06-24

"Artificial Hearts" by Walking Wounded is an excellent mix of musical styles, ranging from rock to reggae to country. The best tune is the opening track "Thousand Mile Stare", a hard charging rocker with lyrical content that refers to the Beach Boys seminal album "Pet Sounds", and describes the loss of innocence that came with the mental struggles of Beach Boy leader Brian Wilson. Over a thunderous guitar riff and drum beat that drives this song, vocalist Michael Packard laments; "Welcome to the beach boys, Welcome to the sun, But you got lost in the undertow, Life was simple back in 1961". The rest of the CD is equally engaging; "Pleasure Me Now", "Jaurez Savior", and "Dead Palm Trees" are particular standouts. The musicianship is first-rate throughout, as is the production work of John Aliva. Lead vocalist Jerry Giddens gives several strong performances. The lyrics are both interesting and intelligent. On "Dead Palm Trees", for instance, Giddens seems to take aim at the Nashville commercialization of country music; "Where clowns ride unicycle blues, And I walk the line for a cowboy tune". I really dug this CD. If you are a fan of country-alt bands like Wilco or Son Volt, or enjoy bands such as Cracker or The Clash, you will find plenty to like here.
