This isn't quite a live album, greatest hits, or rarities package, although it contains plenty of material that falls under all three columns. Rather, Feast on Scraps is a generous serving of everything Alanis. Its centerpiece is a CD featuring eight previously unreleased songs that were recorded during the Under Rug Swept sessions, plus an acoustic take on the hit "Hands Clean." Among the highlights here are a nasty Jagged Little Pill throwback called "Sister Blister" and a warmly seductive folk number approximating Joni Mitchell called "Offer." Then there is the DVD, brimming with superb live performances of sleek, dark pop hits such as "You Oughta Know," "Head Over Feet," and "Thank U." The set is rounded out with some delightfully candid behind-the-scenes footage (watch Alanis break down in tears during the writing of "Surrendering") that will make her fans gasp in delight. --Aidin Vaziri
Customer Reviews:
i wish this was on itunes.......2006-09-29
I'm a die-hard Alanis fan...which means I have all of her albums. There are 4 songs on this collection that I don't have. Some of them are are on 2 or 3 of her albums. I wanted to order the songs off itunes but the album isn't on there.
I just wish it were on itunes...I don't want to pay 21$ for 4 songs.
I'm full! .......2006-02-26
What a great album! First of all the DVD is inspiring! Loved the bits and pieces from her life! Now the CD is exquisite! Each song left me thinking. Why did she not include them in URS?! Here is how i rate the songs:
Fear of Bliss: 5/5, could of been a HUGE hit, strong and very diverse in the arragements, loved it!
Bent 4 U: 4.5/5, great song, but the chorus just didn't do it for me
Sorry to Myself: 4/5, so sweet, makes me sad at times, but really beautiful
Sister Blister: 5/5, could of been another HUGE hit, great rock song!
Unprodical Daughter: 4/5, wonderful, great rock song!
Simple Together: 3.5/5, good ballad, but a bit boring at parts
Purgatorying: 5/5, haunting, love the instruments in this song! The live version is also beautiful!
Overall an excellent album! Sister Blister and Fear of Bliss should of been released as singles though, they are great, people would love them!
Keep singing Alanis!
The Scraps are good!!.......2005-09-07
I'm going to keep this review short.
I like the songs. I like the live material. I think her voice sounds amazing. I'm glad I purchased this item.
Gotta Love Her!.......2005-08-03
If you are a true Alanis fan, the first rule is you must own everything she has done.
Second is you must love everything she has done!
This is a must for any collection to enjoy for years to come.
Completes the under-cooked Under Rug Swept.......2005-07-30
I was very upset with Alanis after finding out that she ditched Fear of Bliss and Sister Blister off the URS CD. While I admire her integrity and evolution, it was upsetting that fans and non-fans were deprived of such gems. What I think the URS CD track list should have been:
1 Fear of Bliss - 4th single
2 Sister Blister - 1st single
3 So Unsexy
4 A Man
5 Flinch
6 Precious Illusions
7 Twenty One Things - 3rd single
8 Hands Clean - 2nd single
9 Simple Together - 5th single
10 Unprodigal Daughter
11 You Owe Me Nothing
12 Surrendering
13 Utopia (HIDDEN)
Anyway, back to Feast of Scraps. Overall, the CD itself is a B+ only because it feels short but it has about 5 classics on it. And Alanis could have added Awakening Americans and Symptoms on the cd, although that would have made a pretty somber track listing. Here is my grade system for the songs:
1. Fear Of Bliss (A+)
2. Bent 4 U (B)
3. Sorry To Myself (B)
4. Sister Blister (A+)
5. Offer (A)
6. Unprodigal Daughter (A)
7. Simple Together (A-)
8. Purgatorying (B)
9. Hands Clean (A)
The DVD is just a marvel to watch and at the end I was left wanting more. The tracks Alanis chose to portray in the DVD were odd choices but still very good. I have great respect for an artist who doesn't focus on their mainstream hitlist during concerts. The contents overall is quite hilarious and really an opener for people who thought Alanis was perpetually dark and serious. Some scenes are quite emotional as well. Overall, this package is ambrosia for her fans.

JUST LIKE I REMEMBERED!.......2007-02-12
I'd looked for this recording in "bricks and mortar" music stores, to no avail. I'm thrilled to have NRBQ back in my life. This is a wonderful collection, and there are new pieces that were not on the original tape I'd had years ago.
FREE ENDORPHINS!!.......2005-10-23
There is absolutely NO WAY to listen to NRBQ and not feel absolutely GREAT from head to toe! I dare you to try listening without at least tapping your toes. I can't listen without dancing, singing and smiling! Like I said, "free endorphins!" A small investment that pays you back forever!
Well, heck yeah!.......2005-09-27
I'm glad to see the good folks at Rounder have rereleased this little dynamo, with some extra scraps for those of us who have waited so long. Fun and even goofy at times, this is what used to be called good-time rock'n'roll -- "Howard Johnson," "Who Put the Garlic in the Glue?" -- but there's also music aimed for your head as well as your heels ("Only You" and "Boys in the City") and some swing left over for a freewheeling version of "Ac-cent-u-ate the Positive." Everyone's having a blast here, and the disc is remastered so well you can almost hear the pop-a-top sounds around Terry's clavinet. There's a fond appreciation of the session in the liner notes (we should all be thankful to whoever got Doug and Link Wray to the studio in a cold upstate New York winter to put down backing vocals). If you dig the Q, this is a motherlode of back-to-back hits. If you wonder what makes these guys the biggest cult band in the land, this is a great place to start. Either way, NRBQ is gonna get you. Resistance is futile.
No Scrap Here.......2005-09-05
I picked up "Scraps" at my local library. I'd read mentions of NRBQ in several publications over the years, and always thought I should check them out. On first listen, I was underwhelmed. Repeated listenings snowballed into what has become an addiction for me. Not since The Beatles' Revolver have I been so blown away by the inventiveness, musicianship, and songwriting on a record.
And the sheer good feeling of it all. Track 12, the Mercer-Arlen classic "Accentuate the Positive", sums up the entire record for me. NRBQ are obviously people who wring as much joy out of life as they can, laughing at it and themselves at the same time.
The album builds, "like the Supremes", as Zappa once said, from the punchy opener "Howard Johnson" to what to me is the best song, the Beatlesque "It's Not So Hard". The ballads are classic - "Only You" is a gem, complete with a toy piano solo.
There is no filler here. Imagine the best of The Band, the Grateful Dead, the Fab 4, Harry Nilsson, and Hoagy Carmichael rolled into one and you'll get an idea of what these guys were about when they made this record. Five emphatic stars.
One additional note - for those who miss Lowell...........2005-05-01
Discovered 'The Q' quite by accident, tryin' to chase down a kicky li'l tune from a car commercial (hence, Ridin' In My Car!)...and must say I'm quite pleased that the Fates dealt me that hand. Br'r Finkel's review above says good a'plenty, & I couldn't hope to improve on that....but find one odd shortcoming - not so much with his review but, in the overall content here about NRBQ. Haven't read it all, so of course it might be there & I've just missed it, but I see no comparison to Little Feat! For those who miss the soulful creations of Lowell George & crew, give these boys a try -- they's about the closest thing to come down the pike since the true Dixie Chickens crossed the road to the shark tank. RIP Lowell....we love & miss ya! *ribit* Shut...UP! ~8)

With his third solo album, Scraps at Midnight, Mark Lanegan continues a storytelling vision that began in 1990 with The Winding Sheet and, more recently, the serene Whiskey for the Holy Ghost. In a swirling and peaceful follow-up, Lanegan proffers the fruit of another rich collaboration with Mike Johnson. Like the stark and dry land of Lanegan's roots in eastern Washington, the songwriting on Scraps at Midnight is lonely and sparse. The shadowy "Bell Black Ocean" and "Hotel" capture a harmony of lyrics and music rare among contemporary musicians. "Stay" and "Wheels" reveal Lanegan's counterpoint--his ability to craft warm and optimistic classics for our wanderings. Thoreau wrote, "The true harvest of my life is intangible... a little star-dust caught, a segment of the rainbow which I have clutched." Scraps at Midnight is a bit of Lanegan's star-dust harvest. His restless spirit, with huérfanos, vagabonds, spruce forests, and bourbon glasses, hovers in the space between the notes. --Brad Doll
Customer Reviews:
Sublime, a real men perspective and point of view.......2005-01-11
What does have this man that every song he creates is beautifull? in a completely men perspective Mr Lanegan creates melancholic and appealing atmospheres, so folk, southern , grey , very enjoyable, Mr Lanegan thougths are 100% male and its about time a rigth and perfect image of real men (like i consider myself)were showed by a singer/songwritter like this great performer, poetry surrounds every melody, and beautifull lyrics fill that acoustic riffs that are the main ingredient in his albums, it worths to get every Mark Lanegan recording.
HM
NO TEENY-BOPPERS ALLOWED..........2005-01-05
Fans of Mark Lanegan had to wait five long years for his third solo LP, SCRAPS AT MIDNIGHT. Was it worth the wait? You bet your brooding ass it was! After a few years spent taking just about any drink or drug handed to him, Lanegan surfaces with an album that sketches a world with its own everlasting sense of regret and loss. It also features Lanegan's wry wit, excellent lyrics, and elegantly raw voice. In other words, poison to teeny-boppers.
The album opens with "Hospital Roll Call," a Sergio Leone type western dirge with Mark growling "sixteen" over and over again ("16" was Lanegan's room number in a rehab clinic). An effective overture, the song gives way to "Hotel," one of the most darkly affecting songs in Lanegan canon. Lanegan has often downplayed this side of his musical character but when he sings "I remember your face/But it's been a long, long day/And what I did along the way/I wouldn't care to say" it is delivered with the sort of world-weariness that you would associate with Lightnin' Hopkins or Hank Williams. It is, simply put, a gripping voice.
Mike Johnson is back, co-producing the album with Mark and helping him paint musical landcapes that give a perfect backdrop to Lanegan's often mesmerizing songs. Lanegan, like Seattle contemporary Chris Cornell, remains one of the most versatile singers of his generation, and the ex-Screaming Trees frontman proves it here with songs ranging from the delicate "Bell Black Ocean" and "The Last One In The World" to the intense anxiety of "Waiting On A Train" and the epic "Because Of This." As with his previous masterpiece, WHISKEY FOR THE HOLY GHOST, Lanegan handles all of it with apparent ease, although many of the songs on this album will leave you feeling at times that there is somebody watching you outside your window. SCRAPS AT MIDNIGHT features Mark Lanegan carving out a style that he can distinctly call his own, simply because nobody else is doing this kind of music with such authenticity. Some might find it "morbid." Again, no teeny-boppers allowed...
Delicious Scraps!.......2004-08-29
This is one of my favorite Mark Lanegan albums along with Whiskey For the Holy Ghost and Field Songs. If you're considering Scraps At Midnight, then you probably already know that Mark has an incredible, yet chilling voice. The songs on Scraps are beautifully done... This isn't a rocking-out kind of album, no. It's more intense, acoustic and atmospheric in style. I listen to Scraps often and consider it to be one of those indispensable CDs I'd take with me, if ever on a deserted island ;-)
One Good Album.......2003-06-12
One huge reason anyone should buy this record, is for the song "Because of This." That is one of his best songs...
light at the end of the tunnel?.......2002-09-28
are things looking up for lanegan? not really. but it hasn't gotten any worse either. Thats the feel of this record. The somewhat sinister feel of 'hospital roll call' is balanced by slow crooner's like 'wheels'. Then theres the closer, 'because of this' that turns the mood of the music up to then on its ear. A cool song with a great finish but it just doesn't seem to fit with the other 9 tracks. Sounds very treeish. All in all, a solid effort from one of the more realistic observers to emerge from the decayed seattle gunge scene.

This full length CD includes there work on Bobbito's Fondle Em Records, new stuff, unreleased and rare old stuff. Including an un-released RJD2 song called "RAIN" Table Scraps is definitely worth the money if you're into the Rjd2 and Copywrite albums released earlier this year, and offers up a CD full of unreleased and out-of-print material as well as digital versions of tracks previously available only on 12-inch vinyl.

Nobody has reviewed this yet????.......2006-04-30
I've had this album for a few years now, I bought it after I picked Deadringer and this turned me onto a bunch of ish I'd never heard of at the time and now listen to all the time, cats like Copywrite, Camu Tao, Jakki Tha Motamouth, and Tage Proto. Every song on here is amazing, I've since picked up High Exaulted and pretty much anything Camu has touched over the past few years since I bought table scraps, but this in my opinion is where these artist have shined the brightest - Best songs are - Absotivley Posolutley, Rain, This Year, and Counseling, the rest of the album is sick too, but those tracks will immediatley stand out. I consider this to be a Weathermen album really, it has the WM emblem in the booklet, and it definitley has a Weathermen feel to it. If you like underground hip hop and have never heard this I'd highly recommend you check this out ASAP.

The Band played Waltzing Matilda says it all........2007-05-02
I heard the song The Band played Waltzing Matilda and had to have a copy of it for my own. Mr. Bogle has a collection of songs some funny some very serious. I have found some good pieces for reflection.
Heartfelt sad songs.......2005-08-03
I was quite impressed by the man's terrific tenor voice. I bought the album for the songs, never having heard him sing. What a nice surprise!
The only down point was that, as a folk music lover,I thought the album was overproduced. However,I will buy more...
Anzac Day.......2005-04-23
I heard "And they played Waltzing Matilda" on CBC for Anzac Day. I almost had to park for the weeping. This song has implications for the fighting in Iraq.
Oh well.......2003-05-19
Bogle has written great songs on occasion. I heard him first interpreted through the lovely June Tabor. But alas, Bogle's singing and some of his songwriting suffer from an amount of sentimentality.
Must have album.......2000-12-23
I started listening to this album about 15 years ago and still appreciate every cut on it. I identify with Eric Bogel and appreciate his talent both as a writer and a singer. Starting with Scraps of Paper and on through the rest of the album, there is not a bad cut.

great cd...provides good, pure hardcore...it's good to see bands sticking with the right sound rather than selling out to the metalcore genre...boo on that

....seriously, just look at him.
A huge step up........2003-10-24
for this Long Island hard core band. I first caught wind of them when they were called the Heist and had just a demo and could tell then that there was something special here. If you've never heard SAHA before think Panic mixed with later period Unbroken and you have the idea. The layout is great too. Plus they are labelmates with BRAND NEW!
all the good things a cd needs.......2003-10-22
this is one of the newer bands out there that has a real sense of what has become before. They respect the hardcore scene and have taken all the good aspects of what has come previously and threw it all into this record as well as putting their own spin on things. This is definitely not every other cd you have, it is fresh, it is new and it is good.
This album is a must have!!
