4 out of 5 stars Seger at his lyrical best.......2006-07-30

Though the guitars dont always shine through in this song like the good ol seger tunes the piano and vocals instead take center stage. And they do it wonderfully i might add. Has any body noticed the little piano riff on the song "the fire inside" sounds like the theme of the 1812 Overture, just in a different rhythm? I thought that was interesting...

5 out of 5 stars Seger's best album.......2006-02-19

I have always been a Bob Seger fan, but this is probably his best work. It has awesome sound to it, and if you have never bought a basic Bob Seger album, this would be a good place to start. It also includes some of Seger's biggest hits such as "Fire Inside" and "New coat of Paint". You won't be sorry if you buy this.

3 out of 5 stars Bob Seger realy sparks a bit fire on this one, but the most are in the middle........2006-01-23

Some rockartists doesn`t know their roots. Bob Seger is one of the few among the socalled "modern" artist`s`who does. The opener Take a Chance isn`t realy up there in 5 stars heaven. The theme is to much repeated, and have to little variation, but you don`t have to wait long. Track 2 The Real Love kicks your`e soul in gear, (it`s also produced by Gear Publishing Co but that`s a coincidence ?), Track 3 Sightseeing Is root`s rock and roll, but nothing more sorry to
say. Track 4 Real at the time I't s much in the same style, and not a realy "earopener" when it come`s to creative listning experience. Track 5 Always In My Heart is a ballad, and it`s ok. Very simple, not to creative to listen too. It`s good too take a slow dance too, but would not lift you up with star`s in your`e eyes. Aaaah. But at last The title track Track 6 The Fire Inside. Bob Seger at his best, saved by a good melody, and Roy Bittan, (from Springsteen Estreet band with a pianoplaying which realy hit`s the mark). This is it, to make it short. Everything fit`s in a way. A melody that will lift your`e soul. Track 7 New Coat of Paint is Bob Seger singing Tom Wait`s, and has some flair, style, and a walkalong melody. Track 8 Which Way, is a good blues song, which has much weight in the melody and a good whole. Track 9 The Mouintain has Eagles member Joe Walsh on Lead guitar, that save this one. Puerly standard rock and roll. Track 10 The Long Way Home is a great ballad. Simple, but strong on lyricks which tells us much about life:- Some lose their way. They all want so much to succeed. How do you tell them apart. The best of them lead with their heart. Bob Seger The Long Way Home. This is great poetry, and something to think about for each of us.
Track 11 Blind Love is more in the "country style" and ok.
Track 12 She can`t do anything wrong, is good ol rocker in the style of his earlier hit`s like: Old Time Rock and Roll.
Some great tracks, some not, Bob Seger is anway a good traditional rock and roller who know`s his craftstrade. 3 1/2 star, nearly 4. A good buy anyway, if you can get hold of it.

5 out of 5 stars A Righteous Rocker Continues The Good Fight Into The 90s.......2005-11-11

With THE FIRE INSIDE, Bob Seger carries on the good fight for traditional rock & roll values into the 90s. The opener, "Take A Chance", like "American Storm" on LIKE A ROCK, has cautionary lines such as "you take a chance when you trust somebody, when you look 'em in the eye" and "you take a chance when you judge somebody, when you really got no proof", lines which, like the lyrics on the 1986 song, have reminded me that I should look at pictures of any number of pretty actresses, as an deterrent against getting involved in dangerous situations. Other songs reveal a sense of comfort for the first time in Seger's career. The fact that Seger, like most other 70s rockers believes that the young Australian tourist jailed in Indonesia on drug-smuggling charges was unjustly convicted makes this CD/cassette an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

5 out of 5 stars AFI's turning point........2007-02-18

For those of you who think Black Sails In The Sunset was AFI's first turn to dark, goth/horror punk, you're wrong. You can even hear a bit of goth in Shut Your Mouth And Open Your Eyes (like in the bridge to Salt For Your Wounds). But half of this EP is dark punk, and the other half sounds like it could've been B-Sides to SYMAOYE.

1.3 1/2
5/5 This really shows AFI's transition to goth music.
2.Over Exposure
5/5 Sounds like it could've been on Shut Your Mouth.
3.The Hanging Gardens
5/5 My personal favorite. I like it even more than The Cure's version (though The Cure are awesome).
4.Demonomania
4/5 This is pretty good. The Misfits version is faster, and better imo.

1 out of 5 stars horrible.......2006-05-28

i don not reccomend this, afi did a HORRIBLE job of head like a hole, they made it sound like a prep anthem. enough said

5 out of 5 stars "Mother, say you'll pray for me!".......2006-05-20

This is one of the best AFI releases (along with Very Proud of Ya', Art of Drowning, Sing the Sorrow). It is much more original than the All Hallows ep. I also like Davey's screaming better on this release better than on the next two (Black Sails, All Hallows). I'll rate the songs individually.

31/2: 10/10 This song is such a heavy introduction to the ep! It has very good lyrics, and it's a very creative song. The chorus has a really cool sound to it, and an awsome rythem!

Overexposure: 10/10 I love this song! It's just as intense as the last one! This song has a really cool rythem change after the second chorus. It makes the song sound alot darker and angrier. I love Davey's vocals at the end.

The Hanging Garden (Cure cover):10/10 Awsome song! Even though I love the original song, this version is way more fun to listen to! The drums are heavier, and they do cool stuff with the guitars on it.

Demonomania (Misfits cover):10/10 This is such a hyper song! Even though the original version had much better vocals, I think this one is way more intense (AFI always makes such energetic cover-songs).

You should definately get this release. It's much more raw and creative than the All Hallows ep! Get as many releases as you can from AFI (exept the Best of the Nitro days album).

5 out of 5 stars One of afi's best recordings.......2005-12-19

i am a huge afi fan and i think this ep is as good as if not better than the all hallow's ep.

3 1/2-10/10
this song starts out like it could be a metal song but jumps into a hardcore punk song that is one of my favorite afi songs ever

Overexposure- 9/10
a really awesome hardcore song.
The Hanging Garden- 10/10
an awesome cure song that is even better with an afi twist.
Demonomania- 9/10
46 seconds of rocked out hardcore that will get stuck in your head and make you want to headbang.

4 out of 5 stars It's in the blood..........2004-12-06

This is quite easily the heaviest AFI release. There's only 4 songs, 2 of which are covers, but hell it's still a damn good offering for anyone who's pissed off a lot, or just likes AFI.

Opener "3 1/2" has a bone-crushingly heavy riff, a tight as hell structure and great lyrics. It may not have the catchiest chorus in the AFI canon but it's a great song, one of my favourites by them.

"Overexposure" is in turn pretty heavy, altogether not so captivating as the first track but the lyrics are still great. The ending is slower and more melodic, sung rather than screamed.

"The Hanging Garden" is an interesting choice of a cover, good bass playing on this track in particular (it's the first release they did with Hunter as a permanent member of the band, although at the time he was calling himself "Steve Angel"). Remember kids, heaviness isn't just about distortion, it's also about delivery, and in terms of sheer weight of gloom this track is REALLY heavy.

"Demonomania" is a Misfits song. As a BIG fan of Earth AD I've heard the original quite a lot and although Davey's singing isn't quite as impressive as Glenn's here, I think they did it pretty well, although I would have liked them to do "We Bite".

All in all it's a solid release, don't expect satisfying vocal harmonies, but if you feel like being slapped around the face for about 15 minutes and there's nobody else around, put this on.

Album Description

Live - Start The Fire is the first live album from RPWL and showcases highlights from their successful Spring 2005 European tour. A DVD of the broadcast is planned for release early in 2006. The release features songs that have not appeared on previous RPWL studio albums, something of a rarity in live albums these days. The frequently aired Pink Floyd covers Cymbaline and Welcome To the Machine are featured on the album, as well as Not About Us, a Genesis song with Ray Wilson on vocals. As an added feature, a brand new, previously unreleased 13 minute studio track entitled New Stars Are Born will be available as a bonus track. Live - Start The Fire will appeal to fans of Pink Floyd, Genesis and Progressive Music in general.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the BEST LIVE albums for about 5 years!.......2006-01-12

This album's simply amazing. RPWL started as a Pink Floyd coverband. It's not difficult to hear that, but the band has managed to make their own style.
Sure - it sounds a bit like a clone between Pink Floyd, Genesis & Porcupine tree, but anyway: CHECK THIS OUT!
Their 4 studio albums are also of very high quality, and well worth listening to. 5 STARS, no doubt! :-)

2 out of 5 stars Woefully Bland.......2005-12-06

In my review of "Trying To Kiss The Sun," also by RPWL, I said that this is a very average band. I was hoping they would be better live, but I was disappointed. The music is good. They even show signs of some instrumental prowess in songs like "The Gentle Art of Swimming," but they are held back from being a good band by their singer. Yogi Lang can be described in one word: "blah." He just doesn't have whatever it is that makes front men riveting, interesting, or even curious. His voice is often buried beneath the music, and, when you can hear it, just plain weak. He's always struggling to stay on pitch, and is just plain flat in many place on this album. Besides that, the vocal lines he writes are boring. You think there might be a hook coming soon, be he then lets you down with some awkwardly-phrased lyric that makes you wonder how the man can have absolutely no sense of rhythm. It's pretty sad that, by far, RPWL's best song is "Roses," and it's sung by a guy, Ray Wilson, who's not even in the band. Ray Wilson is a singer. Yogi Lang is, at best, a "vocalist." Stick to real prog and real singers: Porcupine Tree, Riverside, Spock's Beard.

5 out of 5 stars GET-R-DUN.......2005-11-15

ONCE AGAIN THESE GUYS ARE GETN-R-DUN.JUST GO OUT AND BUY THE CD.ITS RPWL,WHAT ELSE DO YOU NEED TO KNOW?..........

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Live Performance.......2005-10-30

I am happy to be the first to say that no RPWL fan will be disappointed with this double live CD and the Bonus Track of New Stars Are Born ( full studio version )......I am now giving my first listen and I am half way through Disc 2 and I can't say enough of the precise crisp and extremely well mixed live performances by lead singer Yogi Lang. His vocals sound as good or better than on studio albums.......You can't go wrong by buying this.......you too will soon be spreading the word.....

1 out of 5 stars Get out your parachute pants........2006-08-21

I did not listen to this with the expectation that it would sound like Kansas. I simply expected to enjoy it on some level.
NOT SO! I found myself rather embarrassed by the childish lyrics and the overwhelming cheesy 80's sound. It's just silly.
If I had a time machine, and could go back to an earlier decade to hear some good music, I would skip the 80's. Of course if your sporting a mullet and enjoy Budweiser and like Winger, you can't go wrong here. Sorry Billy, nothing personal.

4 out of 5 stars Higher expectation than I thought...........2004-07-03

Well, when an artist releases a debut album, he wants to introduce his "Sound", then, the second one is to set what he has been done and make it better, not in this case, I felt a little disappointed (just a little...)in this The Raging Fire, less "rest-songs", less invited guests, less inspired melodies, the best ones are The Sun Will Rise and the hit Always From the Heart, the first one is still a "Classic", if you like it, you can also get "Power from Kansas", which is costing a budget around, if you wanna have this Raging Fire, go for US edition, which comes with an extra song, I bought the imported and missed it....(but I'll buy the US Ed. later, when the price falls down down down...eh-eh-eh...)

5 out of 5 stars FINALLY, GREAT 80'S STYLE HARD ROCK.......2004-06-10

I listen to alot of music, new and old, and there are very few newer releases that I really get excited about and love. I LOVE this cd. This is what melodic hard rock is all about!! Sure, there a few less than brilliant songs here, but the majority of the songs are very well written, well played, well sung, and rock hard! Man, I love this cd. Forget that Billy played for Kansas. This is not Kansas (although I love Kansas). This is great rock and roll with a good mix of guitar, keys and great musicianship. Get it!!

4 out of 5 stars The Raging Fire is Raging Hot!.......2004-05-20

Since the first cd was so good,(4.5 stars), and after reading some negative reviews, I thought I might be dissapointed in this one. Hardly the case. This is a good cd. Contrary to other opinions, I think it gets better as it goes. The first two songs seem to be transitions from the first cd, then it really gets interesting, with taste of Ozzie, Def Leppard, and White Snake. The songs, It Should Have Been You and Winds of War are classic. Winds of War sounds like it could be a Kansas song. The bonus track, though a good song, is just that, as it does not mix well with the other songs. Overall, the songs on this cd are better than the first cd minus the all-star musicians, though the musicians here are great especially Mike Slammer. 4.5 stars

Although not as great as their near perfect first album, Flies On Fire's second album should is spectacular and should have been huge. The songwriting and vocals of leader Tim P, thrown over the driving rhythm section of Terry Messal and Rich D'Albis, lead one to think that Otis Redding the Rolling Stones and ZZ Top had a head on crash and then decided to bide time by playing a few new tunes while waiting for the ambulances to come and clear the scene.

5 out of 5 stars Hackett Is King.......2005-11-01

"The acoustic guitar is a small orchestra housing other instruments," says former Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett. "Pianos, cellos and harps are hidden away beneath it." Steve definitely proves his point with his 1983 acoustic masterwork, "Bay Of Kings." This is an exquisitely gorgeous album, with Steve working his magic touch on acoustic guitar and the occasional dash of keyboard, while brother John Hackett guest stars on flute. Pieces such as the title track, "Kim," "Second Chance," Steve's old Genesis fave "Horizons," and "The Barren Land" simply sparkle. This is wonderfully soothing music, the perfect disc to play for relaxing, or for that all-important quality time with your special someone. "Bay Of Kings" is a marvelous Steve Hackett album.

        4 out of 5 stars A change of pace.......2005-06-13

I have the original 1983 UK LP on Lamborghini Records (a now-defunct indie of no known relation to the Italian luxury motorcar). It has a nude cover painted by Steve's artist wife Kim Poor, but she did a new cover of him for the CD. Of course, I don't have any bonuses on mine! Maybe I'll get this edition. We'll see.
Old tracks like "Kim" and "Horizons" are redone, plus new tracks that are all instrumental and "Unplugged" classical guitar (something Randy Rhoads would be doing if he were still alive), after several prog-rock releases for Charisma. Even now, he's doing an acoustic tour in the EU, and it may feature what you get on this album.

        4 out of 5 stars Classical Genius.......2005-01-12

A beautifully produced album of acoustic pieces, including Kim from "Please Don't Touch". Steve had hinted at his acoustic prowess as long ago as "Horizons" with Genesis, but this was his first album (I believe), of all acoustic/classical material. It includes a number of gems, including the wonderful Tales From The Riverbank from the children's show, which I remember fondly from childhood. Steve followed this with "Momentum" which is equally as good. Thank you Steve and keep gracing us with your mixture of acoustic and rock material.

5 out of 5 stars A melange of acoustic beauty.......2004-05-29

Mr. Hackett virtuosity and compostion skills are on full display. From the opening with its beautiful Brazillian feel
to a reworking of the hymn like Kim, to the wonderful dissonant sound of Petropolis. This is a guitar, dare I say, masterpiece.
The entire work has a watery sound, obviously by design.
But it is clear enough to present themes and up neck work.
Very good listen, I highly recommend
