A Masterpiece Of Understatement.......2006-07-09
Cantos Is without a doubt the most intimate recording to date. It feels like you are sitting in a living room listening to a private concert. The songs have a certain simplicity that is at once sincere, charming and deceiving. While they all have universal themes lyrically, musically there is a raw sophistication that has grown with every release.
A huge step forward.......2006-06-24
Just like many of you I am a fan of the first three records and above all AJ's raspy voice.
But that voice will NEVER come back, so we may as well stop complain about it and focus on the songs and try and get used to AJ's wider vocal spectrum.
On CANTOS, we get lots of piano and classic guitar back, and that is already an improvement over the past two records. Next, the songs are better imo, allthough I do not like that 'Beatles' sound that still pops up now and then .... miss the bluesy/jazzy influences. Because of his great piano playing, every now and then that NO Funk is back in, ie another positive point.
I wouldn't put CANTOS up there with 'Me In The Bar' or 'Fit To Serve', but maybe that is because also I still miss that raspy voice.
The songs are there, the piano is there and so are the guitars .... so let's get used to the 'new' voice.
To me CANTOS is GOOD, and that's why it get's the 3 stars.
Mind that 'good' is still lots better than most releases I have heard this year.
Another AMAZING AJ cd..........2006-05-03
For fans of AJ's (now legendary) first cd this is a trip back in time. You'll find more more piano oriented stuff here than the last record. You will also find AJ the singer coming to the forefront. He's taking more chances vocally and it pays off in spades. Falsetto is a place AJ really never gone before but here he is and it's wonderful. A cover of the Wings/McCartney classic "Maybe I'm Amazed" fits perfectly on this set. This is just another fantastic offering from the guy Willie Nelson says holds the future of entertainment and Ben Harper (who appears on the cd...) says is one of the top 3 musicians he's ever worked with.
Buy it.

Like Warm Brandy.......2004-10-11
I was turned on to this CD (and the singer) many years ago, when this CD first came out, and it's one of those CD's that start to finish is wonderful. It stayed with me for years, and I've always passed along the CD title to friends and told them to find it and keep it. It's warm, soulful, and full of discovery and fun. It made me smile, ponder and to this day brings back memories of where I was when I heard it. Definetly one of the CD's that will forever be a keeper and a favorite.
good stuff.......2003-05-11
This album is different from his first, self-titled, album, which was more traditional sounding piano blues. He still has his raspy voice and piano based songs, but this album has a bit of a more "modern sound", with elements of jazz, country, and rockabilly in the songs.
Because it's so different from the first album, it took a while for it to grow on me, but it eventually did. There are plenty of good songs with catchy melodies and reasonably interesting lyrics about hanging around in bars.

He Give me "Plenty".......2005-06-08
Think of a studio session and Dr. John, Tom Waits and Marcia Ball drop on by and oh yeah Jim Keltner is beatin' the skins and T-Bone Burnett just happens to pick up Robben Ford''s guitar and voila! one DAMN FINE ALBUM is recorded.
Can you remember a time when someone had a Tuba solo??? The combination of N'Awlin's Boogie Woogie Stride Piano and a voice that you could"rasp" and groove with.
Simply splendid!!!
One of the best albums ever!.......2004-09-06
This is a soulful ablum that is impossible not to love, buy this and you will not be disappointed, in fact I WORE THROUGH my CD and I am ordering a second! Great Great album!!!!!
Fantastic.......2003-05-22
Great blend of top-notch musicians (Robben Ford, Jim Keltner), Jim's own fine grand piano playing, some really great tunes, and some whacky, but still mighty fine tunes make for a great cocktail here. The style is relaxed soul blues, a little bit of stride piano even. It definitely stands out, and the production, especially of the grand, is simply SUPERB! This CD helped sell me my stereo, and afterwards I got the salesperson to order me a copy (not so easy to find in Denmark). I highly recommend it!
Jazz continues to live.......2002-04-24
The first time I listened to this album I was in highschool and found it to be absolutely soul thrilling. Even today I can listen to this before or after preceeding jazz greats, and it fits the bill fantastically. If you're looking for an album containing more than a few great tracks, you'll thouroughly enjoy ALL of these.

Great!.......2003-05-10
I have the first of his discs which I love, and this is also good, much heavier than the first one, but some good blues rock is what it is. I think his voice is very powerful, but not overly growly, and his piano playing is supergood. Definitely recommend this!

You've got to be kidding.......2002-02-22
This is probably the worst music I've heard in my life, and I've heard some bad stuff in almost 1/2 a century -- altho way more good - great - incredible! than bad. I'm embarrassed for his incredibly talented father.
PLAY IT AGAIN A.J........2002-01-03
His first album was very good. His second album was OK. But "Fit To Serve" is Croce's best one yet. His vocals sound stronger here, but even more important, the songs are much better. Croce can play a mean barrelhouse type piano too. He's the kind of guy you might see playing behind the chicken wire in an old roadhouse somewhere. Unlike his more folk oriented dad, Croce is a tougher, hard edged blues/r&b/soul player. This guy can both ravage your soul and touch your heart with his music. What I like most about this album is that it retains the raw energy of a live show. Good examples of this are the jumpy tunes "I Don't Mind", "I'll Get Through", "Texas Ruby" (a good one), and the very Ray Charles-like "Judgement Day". He saves his best for last on "Nobody Else". A great song with heart-tugging lyrics about the battle of kicking alcohol. This is an excellent album by an artist who obviously has a great love for his craft. I have a feeling one day everyone is going to catch on to this guys music, and he'll eventually get his "time in a bottle". He's just too talented to go unnoticed for long. In the meantime, I'm going to enjoy "Fit To Serve". His best album to date, and it comes highly recommended.!
The big voice.......1999-12-02
I am a fan from France (so sorry for my english). I heard AJ's 1st album on french tv channel and then I became a fan ! His voice is so incredible and his blues/jazz sound is so deep ! My favorite is his 1st and 3rd album and I really expect a show soon in France ! This last Album will enjoy you !
That People critique is way-off.......1999-10-26
A.J., like the consensus shows, is not like his father and should not be compared in any way (unless genetically) A.J's albums are fantastic. My suggestion is to buy his first (self-titled "A.J Croce")and work through to this one (there are 3 total) Just give him a chance and you will certainly not be dissapointed. Don't go into this expecting "time in a bottle" or having an extremely narrow mind like the above mentioned People Critic. What you will get is a fresh new sound of Jazz/blues and Rock & Roll. I am very surprised that his albums have not received more attention.

This Album Comes Closest to His Father's Music.......2006-09-30
When I first AJ Croce, I knew he was talented and though I am not a fan of blues/jazz music I liked it. But I thought how can the son of Jim Croce have such a terrible voice. I wasn't a fan of his raspy voice for it was such a put on. Why blues singers need to do this I don't know why. Brownie McGhee didn't. He had a great voice and used it. So when I heard AJ's 4th album, I was surprised; he can actually sing.
It took courage to change his style and I admire him for that and it is a style that works better on this album than his last one, for this is by far his best album.
I totally disagree with the last reviewer it is worth the time and money to listen to it. Just because it ain't blues or jazz, it doesn't mean it is bad. Some people don't like change, well that is too bad, for as a songwriter myself, the artist needs to please himself first and most can appreciate hard work, talented musicians, a well-produced album and good songs and all of that is here.
This album is not a Jim Croce album, but 2 songs Cold & Call Me Dear, both played on the guitar remind me of Jim, so maybe hearing his father's music influenced in some way. Both those songs are standout tracks on this cd.
I love the Beatles, but this is not like a Beatles album. Only 2 or 3 songs are Beatle-like. The outstanding Lying on the Ground is like a Sgt Pepper song and has that George Martin produced sound. How Long is a little like Hey Jude at the end and maybe Hung Up On You. I hear more of an Elvis Costello influnce on this cd.
Most of AJ Croce's albums I found had inconsistent writing, but this one only has a few weak songs.
It opens with the decent Don't Let Me Down, falters with Baby Tonight and then takes off with the wonderful Call Me Dear, a very catchy tune.
Then comes the Sgt Pepper sounding Lying on the Ground, the alright sounding Too Soon, a weak I Believe and then another wonderful number, Upside Down.
Then comes the Jim Croce sounding Cold. One of the highlights of this album.
After that it is kinda a mixed bag. Hung Up on You I like a lot. Almost Angeline is simply beautiful and has a Bob Dylan influence to it. How Long ends the album in a great way.
The album is worth the money and the time to listen to. If it's just blues and jazz you like don't listen to it, but don't come off sounding like AJ has to please you; he doesn't. The last album indictated he had changed his style so it was pretty obvious he'd likely continue that path.
And one more thing his new voice is his natural voice. It doesn't sound forced or put down, he sounds wonderful and it is clear that those voice genes of Jim & Ingrid did get passed on to him and at times his vocal range excels to heights of beauty which makes the songs sound so much better.
Count me among the disappointed.......2006-04-19
Let's put it this way . . . this CD is such a huge (and incredibly tepid) departure from AJ's other work, that I came upon the Amazon site by checking to make sure that there was not another AJ Croce looking to cash in on his name. I was actually hoping there was. If you are a fan of AJ's raspy voice and classic piano jazz/blues fusion, DO NOT waste your time and money. This CD will soon be for sale on ebay where another unspecting fan will fall victim.
My first exposure to this artist and not my last...........2005-05-26
I expected more of the jazz/blues/funk used to describe AJ Croce's work, but I still was not disappointed by this CD. I'm ordering the CDs other AJ Croce afficionadoes have suggested. "Seedings" may not fare so well after I have other work to compare to, but I am going to enter a favorable review for this first exposure.
Less than I had hoped for.......2005-03-27
I'll try to make this brief. I am a HUGE fan. I have his previous four discs and anxiously awaited this one. If you're a fan of A.J.'s first three discs it's likely you'll be as severely disappointed as I was. While these are adequately pleasant and catchy pop songs, A.J.'s talent, which is significant, is as an artist that very effectively blends blues, jazz, soul, and new olreans style funk into a great and lively mix. "Fit To Serve" is his best disc in my opinion and even "Transit" which many early fans dissed still had a lot of funky energy and has several of my favorite of his songs (Its sort of a cross between Marc Broussard, Elvis Costello, and Chuck Profit). His voice has been a terrific raspy growl that seemed as though it would only improve with age, but here it is only airy and teppid. His piano playing typically is the driving force behing the songs and he's skilled in the style of Dr. John, Jon Cleary, and Henry Butler. On this dics the keyboards are a barely audible side dish of chords. "How Long" is the only track that hints at his former self and that's sad. A.J. if you read these, please return to where your talents lie.
A.J. attacks the mainstream.......2005-02-19
The album is great; think Ben Folds meets The Beatles. Past efforts have been serious piano jazz; this album has catchy songs that stick in your head long after the CD is done. "Upside Down" has a nice lyrical hook reminiscent of Ben Folds Five with Beatles-like chord changes. It's a new favorite for me.

Such a varied talent!.......2005-06-30
A splendid diversion from his previous style, Croce shows off his true musical virtuosity on TRANSIT. Venturing into more of a "bubble-gum" style of pop music, his layered harmonies and Hammond B3 use harken back to the days of the Zombies, Byrds and even The Beatles (some of which are credited as influences in the album's liner notes.) Needless to say, his strong, witty songwriting continues at the same high level as his previous work. The title itself, TRANSIT, suggests a move in a different direction...that move being musical style, in this case. So, to those critics who are aghast at this change, just sit back and appreciate it. He pulls it off as if it's been his style all along. AJ Croce is truly a varied and special talent...unfortunately underappreciated by today's music listening public. It's their loss!
Rockin and Rollin and DEFINATELY a chip off the old block.......2005-02-10
As a big fan of Jim Croce i was VERY interested in this release. Other sons with famous fathers have had a mixed result from me.
Tal Bachman (father: Randy of Guess Who & BTO fame) is great
Joe Brucato (Father: Chuck of The Rustix) is great too
Jakob Dylan (Father: Bob) isn't as great
I was hoping he would exceed my expectations. Jim was one of the best storyteller songwriters in the history of music.
I was NOT disappointed.
AJ is a phenominal talent. Catchy songs, great hooks. Why isnt he popular? Probably the same reason Joe Brucato isn't. If it doesn't have huge boobs, people dont want to hear you for pure talent.
Here is a song rundown:
1. Maybe
the only single released (i have the 45 in my jukebox) I love the lyrics to this one (as i do with most of the songs on this cd) "Maybe means no everytime"
2. It's Only Me (Oh Ya-Ya)
Not really the best one but it sure rocks!
3. Turn Out The Light
This one rocks too but is alot better of a song. He is a hell of a pianist and shows off his chops here.
4. Summer Can't Come Too Soon
The flipside to Maybe. Another great rocker. I wish i could catch his live show, he has to smoke!
5. The Bargain
Great relationship song. "Oh the compromise we make to make it right" Great guitar solo in here too.
6. Find Out Now
Midtempo song with yet more great lyrics. He doesnt do stories like his dad did. BUT he does have a way with words.
7. Everyman
The weakest track on the cd. Not one of my favorites.
8. What I Wouldn't Do
If you say you've never said this about anything, you are lying. "What i wouldn't do to find a way. What i wouldn't do for one more day" Alot of his songs are breakup song/commentaries.
9. Change
"Do people really change" My answer would be no, seems AJ feels the same way about it. awesome song!
10. Five
Kinda corny lyrics "1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and i'm outta your life" The worst is easily "You're a fridgidaire, and you just don't care" what an interesting way to tell someone they are cold and uncaring. However it's a good rocker.
11. She Was Always Right
The story of my life, hilarious song. Good interplay between AJ and the backing vocalists.
AJ: No i can't admit it
BV: go ahead and say it
AJ: she was always right
Good for ANY guy who's woman thinks she is always right.
12. Don't Leave Me Now
Some reviewer said it wasnt as good as the rest. It is better. "Please say you'll stay, don't leave me now. I'll never leave, i don't know how."
All in all an awesome album. If you are a fan of the singer/songwriter or even his dad, please buy this album (Joe Brucato's album Swallow All Of You is a good compliment to it)
Please read and rate all my reviews
Who made this album!?!.......2004-09-14
AJ is an incredible talent, but I think he was kinapped by aliens or lost a bet. This is not his style at all and is less than impressive. This stuff sounds more like something played at the end credits of a film than the bluesy soul filled tunes I love him for. AJ WHAT HAPPENED?!?!
Not for me this one !.......2004-05-10
First time I heard his voice, I was half sleeping on my coach with a French TV show running on tV. I was imagining a big tall black jazz man singing and playing piano and then I discovered this skinny white young guy and I found it astonishing !!! His music was so great, so smooth, so jazzy and easy listening, I had to get his cds immediatly ! Since then, I had bought all his cds (Fit to serve, That's me in the bar) and always this same joy and happiness just listening to it. But I must confess that for Transit, the magic did not happen... I do not even recognize his voice, so dear to me, on this album. To my opinion it is just common music, nothing really extraordinary. His style is not the same... it is pop music only... Please, Please A.J ...! give us jazz, blues, give us what you're best at ! I'am waiting your next album and I love You !!!!
Quality Music.......2003-08-27
I just don't understand why I don't see his name on the Top 10 chart. Great songs with great sound quality.
