Even if you don't agree with Neil Young's politics, you can't help but be daunted by the intersection of his genius and ire on his second album in less than seven months. It is the very rare artist who is able to channel indignation and moral disgust in such a coherent and forceful way--without sacrificing any of the vivid imagery, passion, or the high level of musicality that we have come to expect from him over the past four decades. But that's not what elevates this album: it's his pure, naked, visceral reaction to the Bush administration's foreign policy, building on a canon of outrage that he began with 1970's "Ohio," penned in the wake of the Kent State student deaths. But here he goes one better, filling in the lines that he began to draw on 2003's Greendale about a family caught in changing times. But Young's done with musing about lost ideals. On Living with War, he demands much more from his audience, and himself. This is nothing less than a call for fearless action in extraordinarily fearful times. --Jaan Uhelszki

Album Description

The Canadian music hall of famer and former member of Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young is responsible for hits like Southern Man, Heart of Gold and Harvest Moon. But on his newest record, to be titled Living with the War, Young is taking a page from Bob Dylan and putting together an album of protest songs against the actions of American President George W. Bush. One of the tracks on the upcoming release, which as of yet has no release date, is said to feature the single Let's Impeach the President whose subject is fairly obvious. Not a stranger to protest music the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young tune Ohio was written in reaction to a protest against the Vietnam War.

4 out of 5 stars Rockin' in the (un)free world.......2007-06-27

Well well well. Seems Neil Young is reaping, then repenting, some of his pro-Reagan harvest. Cool by me, it's never too late to start loving instead of killing - and nice to see Phil Ochs get top billing over Dylan in the liner notes, too.

Now, the music. Two songs, "After The Garden" and "Families" have the classic Young magic - tuneful, beautiful sorrowful grunge. With their anthemic choruses, the folkpop master peers from behind his overheated amps of smouldering distortion and churns out a pair of tunes transcending the project's premise. "Flags of Freedom," with stacking stanzas released into majestic rusty harmonica, also contends. Alas, the hasty inspiration seems to have prevented the final essential spark - gripping guitar solos - from getting into the equation. Rats!

It's been mentioned this stuff is rehashed, 2nd-tier, slapdash. David Crosby (in his most recent memoir) recalls asking Young why such simple compositions - and Young responded, "I'm not giving up any of my good s--t just talking about George Bush."

...but as someone I thought intellectually honest, I can see where he's coming from. I'm a conservative Republican, and I too have the feeling that Bush sold us out. When ARE we going to attack Saudi Arabia anyways?

Neil Young-Living With War *****

Released in 2006 and Living With War was the return of Neil Young. What is ment by that is the return of authentic Neil, this is his first album in several years that is fully impassioned. You can since the ergency in Youngs songs here. Living With War is an album of satire and propaganda that you are either going to love or hate, there will be no middle ground with this album and Young lost and gained a number of fans over this album as well. Being a Canadian Young took a bold risk by making an entire album critisizing the American government. Now if he were to make an album about the Canadian parliment maybe that would be more suitable but then again Neil Young is about as American as you can get. This was a move I did not give a chance at first but then decided if I am a real Neil Young fan I will give it a chance and did and loved it.

Released in packaging that resembles a paper sack for authenticity and minimalism, which is what the entire album is about. It opens with 'After The Garden' a song about what will happen when the world ends in a nuclear holocaust. It is a rockin' track and one that really sets the pace for the album. Easily on of Neils better tracks as of late. 'Living With War,' the title trackis written from a soilders point of view. It is another great song witha chorus sure to grab your attention. 'The Restless Consumer' is easily the best song Young has released since Ragged Glory. With his patent harmonies as only his voice can deliver, and his conviction even if you disagree with what he is saying he makes you want to believe in it, and if you ask me that is the mark of a great song. The great guitar playing during the song is classic Neil Young. Destend to become and anthem is 'Shock And Awe.' A killer track with anthemic chorus' andpower resembling the power of the Young classic 'Rockin In The Freeworld' from the freedom album. The song speaks of days past with a less corrupt government so to speak. 'Families' is a great song with lots of good guitar work and great vocals, especially the harmonies. But the song does not realy do much to stand out on the album. 'Flags Of Freedom' is a great song. A song of hope and desperation at the same time. Speaking of the youth and how they have a voice and a choice to make and need to use both to change what needs to change. 'Lets Impeach The President' is forced and contrived to say the least. Though it does make the point, calling George W. Bush a Flip-Flopper but I just wish the song would have been written better, but the use of audio clips from Bush's speaches does add a nice touch. The song is entertaining to say the least even though it does stretch a little. 'Lookin For A Leader' is a personal favorite. It is a plea for a leader, a real, great upstanding leader of the old days to come and help rebuild the country and take it to the full potential. 'Roger And Out' is a slower song with some heavy guitar. One of the best songs on the album, easily. While the song is still slightly political it is really loosly political because there is much more subject matter behind it then just the government. The album ends with 'America The Beautiful' which is sung with an entire chior and done wonderfully. It is a really sentimental and touching way to end an album that is anything but that.

While I may not totally agree with Youngs views on the country (though some I do), and even though he is not an American citizen he does live in America and this album shows that. He clearly knows what he is singing about and you can really tell that the man loves his country. For those who say Neil has no buisness making and album like this and that this is not him, he is just an old hippie and it is about time that he released a politicaly charged album, and because he waited so long I am convinced that is why it turned out as fabulous as it did. This album is highly recomended.

2 out of 5 stars Young rehashing Young.......2007-04-10

Politics aside, most of the songs on here are not very original. As I listened to it, it seemed to me that Young was rehashing or recycling some of his earlier songs and licks. I think the only reason this CD got the press it did was because of the politics of the lyrics and Young flip-flopping on his earlier support of the war on terror (just like most of the Democrats). This is only for hardcore Young fans.

2 out of 5 stars Heavy Sigh.......2007-04-05

After reading several hundred reviews of this album (some very eloquent), I felt obliged to add just one thing more. As some have noted, Mr. Young has always been quite outspoken in his opinions and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. In fact, you can go back through his entire battery of work and find political themes everywhere and all over the map (I'll refer you to such songs as Southern Man, Ohio, Cortez the Killer, Inca Queen, Rockin' in the Free World, etc ...ad nauseum.) The fact he happens to have been born on Canadian soil is irrelevant. It has never stopped him from commenting on what he believes in and for that he should be commended.

That said, if you have not heard this record, I would strongly urge you to listen to at least 2 or 3 tracks BEFORE you make a purchase. If you are a fan of lyrics and you agree with Neil's political stance, you'll love this record. If you are on the opposite end politically you will despise it. However, whatever side you are on, I think if you listen to the music on its own, and take the lyrics out of it, you will find this may well be the weakest album Neil has ever put out (with the possible exception of the awful Everybody's Rockin). Every song sounds essentially the same and after awhile the politics, quite frankly, get boring. There is nothing on this record (musically) that is remotely worth saving (not to mention the production and sound quality stinks). Thus my 2 stars (I gave it 2 just because it's Neil Young).

A previous reviewer thought a potential buyer should go read the lyrics to the songs first. I wholly agree. If you are a die-hard NY fan, of course you'll need this for your collection. If you are a die-hard anti-Bush person, ditto. If you a fan of good music, pass on this one and move on to some of Neil's earlier work. I'd recommend Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere or one of the more recent archive *live* recordings as a starting point.

This is definitely NOT the place to start if you're just getting into Neil Young.

One other thing for those that may not be aware, the notion of "Let's Impeach The President", while it may be quite trendy, is simply not possible unless one is a member of the United States Congress. Neil Young has no more chance of impeaching anyone than you or I do. But it does make for good fodder.

5 out of 5 stars Ferguson Returns.......2007-06-01

This album reminds me of the live performances I attended when I was in college a long time ago. It was great to relive these experiences. The Kenton orchestra tracks were particularly good. I thought I had lost the "Hot Canary", since I had it originally on 78. Nothing plays them anymore. I recommend this trip down memory lane.Wow! The Formative Years

5 out of 5 stars Awesome collection!.......2007-05-13

I've been collecting MF recordings for about 35 years... and this really is a great compilation of the Best of Maynard's Early Years. This is the stuff that won him Downbeat Awards and made him a "name" performer while still in his 20's.

The CD is well recorded, there's nothing glaringly bad as far as levels/mixing go. For vintage recordings (late 40's and 50's) these are well recorded and hold up well both from a technical and musical standpoint.

I had all but one of these tunes in my collection... but it's nice to have them all in one place on CD instead of hunting through all my old vinyl!

If you're a MF fan - or a trumpet player who wants to hear what the fuss is all about - come hear The World's Greatest Trumpet Man as he was at the beginning of his career!

5 out of 5 stars wow the formative years by Maynard Ferguson.......2007-03-31

Definitive early recordings of "The Boss". Well recorded and packaged. Good addition to your Maynard collection.

5 out of 5 stars Essential.......2007-03-15

This is an essential CD for Maynard Ferguson enthusiasts who do not own many examples of his work from the late 40s and early 50s or have not heard many of these early cuts. His remarkable youthful precision will be especially revelatory for those who are primarily familiar with Ferguson from his final years touring as an elder statesman with Big Bop Nouveau. While the disk is inexpensive, the sound quality is good to excellent, with the understandable exception of the first two radio transcription cuts.

Ferguson moved to the United States in 1949 and initially played with the bands of Boyd Raeburn, Jimmy Dorsey and Charlie Barnet - just as the age of the big band was passing. While there are no studio recordings from his tenure with Raeburn or Dorsey, this CD contains a couple of tracks from a live radio broadcast with Dorsey in New York during March of 1949.

The third track is Ferguson's notorious feature with the Charlie Barnet band on "All the Things You Are". This disjoint and decidedly unsentimental recording enraged Jerome Kern's widow, leading to a lawsuit threat that resulted in the record being withdrawn from sale by Capitol Records. For those that have grown used to Ferguson's flamboyant style, it does not seem as extreme as it may have in the fall of 1949, although it is still quite a hoot to listen to.

Ferguson was destined to play with Stan Kenton and the only impediment was that Kenton had temporarily disbanded when Ferguson made his move to the U.S. Ferguson finally joined Kenton when he formed the Innovations Orchestra in 1950 and Kenton featured Ferguson prominently on a number of recordings (most already out on CD). This CD contains three tracks with Kenton, the eponymously named "Maynard Ferguson" (with the Innovations Orchestra) and two cuts with the "regular" Kenton band, "Hot Canary" and "What's New". There are four cuts from 1950 recorded with Ferguson listed as leader of an orchestra comprised of Kenton sidemen - and given the quality, apparently dubbed from vinyl. There are also two cuts from 1952: an odd small-group date with Ben Webster and an orchestra cut featuring his first wife, Kay Brown, on vocals.

Ferguson left Kenton in 1953 to become a studio player for Paramount Pictures. While his contract limited his live performance opportunities, he still recorded quite regularly as a leader and sideman. The middle of this CD includes seven tracks from 1954-1956. There are a number of CDs available with additional material from this period.

The CD concludes, appropriately, with five tracks from the Birdland Dreamband, which Ferguson was tapped to lead in 1956 when he left Paramount. This aggregation would form Ferguson's core performing unit until the mid 60s, when he left the inhospitable musical climes of America for Europe and India. While the mature Ferguson would occasionally pull out charts from his early years, his second career would be based on more rock-influenced charts and a more fluid playing style to match.

It is nice to see Ferguson's early- and mid-career work finally coming out on CD, ironically just as the CD is heading into technological obsolescence. Nevertheless, even for those who have moved into the iPod age, the price is right and the screaming is timeless. Wow, indeed.

5 out of 5 stars Still unbelievable.......2007-02-28

Oh, my...even after hearing the incomparable Maynard Ferguson on dozens of recordings over the years, the sheer virtuosity of his playing continues to astound me. I know that most, if not all, of the sides on this LP have already been available on CD - and the quality of some of the recordings is subpar. But the gifts that Maynard possessed, even as a very young man, were nothing short of otherworldly, and this collection showcases the early years nicely. If for nothing else but Maynard's remarkable "All the Things You Are", his restrained and lovely take on "Over the Rainbow", and, of course, "Maynard Ferguson", this disc is absolutely essential for any MF fan. Buy it now.

5 out of 5 stars My First Time.......2007-04-01

I remember, back when my older brother got his first car and popped this cd in when I rode with him. I fell in love with this cd so much that I knew when the skips happened(and still do till this day) and was sad when he lost this cd. Years Later, I had my own collection but it was missing something. So I searched and searched and finally found it! I've seen the movie but I will always love this album. There's heavy, hard, laid back, funky, and truly bizzare, all are great.

1 out of 5 stars Judgement Night.......2007-03-12

I hated the music on this CD. The only track I liked on the whole CD was track 2 and I love it - I play that track over and over.

4 out of 5 stars Good soundtrack from a forgettable film. .......2007-01-10

If I remember correctly around the time this movie came out is when the film industry started to realize with a good soundtrack packed full of kick butt artists they could really draw in larger crowds and make more money off soundtrack sales. Well, this CD is one of many victims of that film industry marketing genius that came about in the early 90's that took some great artists of the day, and in my opinion made one of the must have movie soundtracks of its time for anyone who is a fan of rap, rock, metal, or alternative.

Sure the music itself is now going on 14 years old, but at the time this was one earth moving rap-rock masterpiece considering that the now classic Aerosmith/Run DMC and Anthrax/Public Enemy duets were the only real previous rap-rock collaborations in the public eye.

For the general Joe public I would say keep browsing and save your money. As for the fans of some of the artists that just need to hear those extra songs, like myself, or the genre that might be interested in hearing the tracks I would say go for it, but like any other CD not every song is a winner.

4 out of 5 stars Forgot about this one.......2006-02-20

The movie sucked, but the soundtrack was a concept album that sadly went unnoticed. Before morons like Limp Biskit and Linkin Park ruined the rap/rock genre, this was probably the best all-around album of its kind, up there with the first couple Rage Against the Machine records. Standouts include what I consider Helmet's best song ever, "Just Another Victim," which is really two songs cut in half, with House of Pain borrowing the riff to make the latter minutes into great old-school hip hop. Slayer and Ice-T, Cypress Hill with Pearl Jam (the latter whom I usually HATE), and a brilliantly disturbing teaming of Faith No More and Boo-Yaa Tribe for "Another Body Murdered" (the first FNM song recorded after they fired original guitarist Jim Martin) are among the tightest and most intense here. Just stay away from the retarded title track by Onyx and Biohazard, it blows.

5 out of 5 stars The only good rap-rock ever recorded.......2005-12-11

Good rap-rock is rarer than giant diamonds. This here is the Koh-i-Noor of the genre. What?

Yes, there are a few different versions of "Living in the Past" floating around, and I still have the original LP from which I can compare them all. I own the Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab, 2-disc, Original Master Recording UltraDiscII GOLD CD and it is the ONLY COMPLETE VERSION CURRENTLY AVAILABLE! With a grand total of 23 tracks, not to mention a faithful reproduction of the 35 page booklet included in the original album, this version has sonic quality far superior to any "CD" version you will ever hear. This is as close as you'll get to listening to the orginal "LP" on the finest turntable system. It's obvious that great care was taken when this package was put together, from the remastering to the detail that went into the booklet and packaging. In fact, it is probably the best sounding MFSL CD that I own, and I have quite a few. So, from one "Tull Fan" to another, this is the definitive version. I realize that it's likely to set you back few bucks (I've seen some of the prices!), but if you can find it, BUY IT! It's a worthy investment.

Great CD but does not have all the songs the original album had. "Bouree" is missing was replaced by "Inside" a song from the benefit album.

4 out of 5 stars Watch which Version You Are Getting.......2006-10-21

Before moving into the review, I must warn you that these reviews appear under three different versions of "Living in the Past." The first version is a gold CD that contains 23 tracks, including "Teacher," "Bouree," and "Locomotive Breath," that do not appear on the other two versions. The second version has 20 tracks, which does not include the three aforementioned tracks. The third version is an imported version with only 19 tracks. In addition to the three previously eliminated tracks, this CD also eliminated "Hymn 43." The prices of the three versions and their availability vary greatly, so I recommend you survey the versions available and choose the version that best fits your needs.

This album fills in holes in Jethro Tull's early music, including tracks not a part of their earlier albums and commercially adding more music at a time when Tull was riding high on the success of 1971's "Aqualung." While some reviewers advise that you need not buy Tull's earliest recordings if you have "Living in the Past," I have all those recordings as well and do not believe this CD replaces them.

This CD offers a range of music, from hard rockers to mellow folk and Tull's signature renaissance-flavored folk and rock. "Living in the Past" offers a jazz-like piece with Ian Anderson's flute prominently displaced. It was the range of music Tull played that has always made Tull hard to fit into a particular genre. While they are often classified as hard rock because of songs like "Teacher" and "Sweet Dreams," as well as most of "Aqualung" and "War Child," Tull more likely fits into a genre of their own as they play music of all types and they seem to do so in a pattern of their own.

Like the true artists that they are, Jethro Tull created music as they felt moved to create. The result is creative and interesting music, often satirical, nearly always at least good. It may be tempting to think in retrospect that some of the music on this CD indicated that Jethro Tull was moving in a harder rock direction. However, as music from CDs such as "Minstrel in the Gallery" and "Songs from the Wood" indicates, Tull's style has always been eclectic, with hard rock being only one of their numerous styles.

This collection is a great introduction to a group that refuses standard classification and has only been recognized as one of music's greats in the last few years. While this CD is sometimes hard to find, I recommend this CD highly if you can find it and if you have liked what you've heard of Jethro Tull's non-commercial music.

If your just getting into Tull, try and get a copy with "Alive and well and Living in" which was on the original U.K. version and now CD remastered Benefit. Don't worry about getting:
1.Bouree
2.Teacher
3.locomotive breath(U.K. release)
4.Hymn 43(U.S. release)
They are all excellent songs but if you start to like Living In The Past you can get these songs on other great albums, which is really a much better way to hear them.
I first started listening to Jethro Tull in High School. Being part of the "band geek" community, my friends and I would spend any free time we had before or after school in the band room playing or listening to music.
I was particularly lucky enough to have a passionate music teacher who provided a kind of refuge for us in the big rehearsal room and connected offices. He would always try to inspire us by playing music that inspired him, and Jethro Tull music was some of that music. A friend and I would play their records on an old turntable I got in a relatives basement who had passed away.I also had an older friend who was really into them who would play them whenever I saw him.
This is one of the first albums I heard from them, along with "Songs from the Wood" and "Thick as a Brick"(besides Aqualung from classic rock radio).
This is the first music I ever heard with incredible ecclecticism in style and instrumentation, but not disparate sounding, from acoustic guitar and toy piano(Just trying to be),to heavy rock guitar and flute and tablas(Love Story).
From mandolin, whistle and strings(Christmas Story),
to a pop rock song with a clave and bass intro in 5/4(holy crap!).
From songs about the well told tale of touring woes(Driving Song), to discontent with holiday excess(Christmas Song).
From a simple thank you(Nursie), to cynical commentary on society(Wond'ring again).
From aimless lovelorn wandering (Singing all day),
to the beauty of realizing "that life is a long song, but the tune ends to soon for us all."
This album is filled with some of the best Tull songs from any of their various eras. These songs reflect Ian Anderson's songwriting before their extended song albums(Thick and Passion) changed their direction somewhat(not in a bad way!). These songs, excluding the two live cuts, are pop gems filled with exceptional musicianship, arrangements, idiosyncratic lyricism, weird isoteric british references(Up the 'pool), humor, touching sentiments, and total originality, each under four and a half minutes, some a minute and a half(Just trying to be, Nursie).
Ian's great singing and olde english, travelling minstrel acoustic guitar is all over them. And flute playing that ranges from little backround parts to huge in your face flurries, classical lines to Roland Kirk tinged blues licks, all the while infusing the flute into the band's sonic landscape so you never say to yourself "Oh there's that flute again".
This album really comes to life in the headphones, with great Beatles-esque stereo panning and intricate overdub layering. Once you start listening you're bound to find at least a handful of things sonically in each song that are amazing, like the far left and right panning of John Evans' piano and the acoustic guitar harmonizing in unison in "Witches Promise". Or the huge cavern reverb they throw on the very end of Martin Barre's guitar solo in "Sweet Dream". Just a couple of examples from a couple of songs!
If your already a fan, try listening to the album excluding the previously released tracks(at the time) and the live cuts. Then throw "Living in the Past" on top:

1.Living in the past
2.Love Story
3.Christmas Song
4.Driving Song
5.Sweet Dream
6.Singing all day
7.Witches Promise
8.Alive and well and living in
9.Just trying to be
10.Wond'ring again
11.Life is a long song
12.Up the 'pool
13.Dr. Bogenbroom
14.For later
15.Nursie

This is the only way I listen to these songs now. I find the other songs great but I've grown to love these songs as their own album, and the other songs become intrusive. I listen to "Locomotive Breath" and "Hymn 43" on Aqualung, "Teacher" with Benefit, "Bouree" on Stand Up, and the live tunes with the Live from Carnegie Hall '70 disc from the 25th Anniversary Set.
Amid the hysteria of the satisfying but radio-drained alpha male Aqualung riff which unfortunately went up the stairway to heaven and the Thick as a Brick "concept album" hype(albeit well deserved hype), this album proves what a great band and concept that Jethro Tull were based solely on the songwriting and execution of these relatively short pieces.
The thing about this set is it contains that intangible sense of place and time that great albums have. They have the ability to evoke images or feelings that belong specifically to an era I did'nt grow up in, or a place I've only seen second hand.
You'll never hear another album like this one. I still get goose-bumps when I put the headphones on!

3 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars- Get this if you're a completest.......2005-12-10

I'm not really sure why they had to add a handful of previously released songs to Living in the past. They could have just made it a single album on vinyl because those previously unreleased songs(I think there was about 12 or 13 of them, at least)would not take up any more than one album. What's the point of having a lot of songs that you already have on their first four albums? I guess they did it because some people who just like a little bit of Tull, would have some better songs to make them put up with the mediocre previously unreleased songs they had to offer on the album. So if you're a huge fan of Tull, why are you bitching about them leaving off "Bouree" and "Teacher", when you already have those songs on their first four albums. I thought about it, and I decided not to pay for the two disc sets by Toshiba and Mobile Fidelity Lab, and I purchased the out of print U.S. version for $20.00, which I'm really quite happy with. Even though I think this isn't remastered, quite a few of the songs had a nice crispness to them. The two live tracks sounded pretty darn good to me! They say they don't want to bother to reissue and remaster this, but I think in a few years from now they probably will anyway. I'm a huge Jethro Tull fan, and I'm a completest, so this is my last Tull purchase, but if you're just a casual fan and just want the song "Living in the past", you might just buy one of their single disc "Best of" compilations to aquire that excellent song. Also, if you don't really need the song "Alive and well and living in", which is on the U.S version, you might want to think about buying the U.K version because you can buy it used on Amazon for just over $6.00, as opposed to buying the out of print U.S version for over $20.00. This isn't anywhere near as good as several of their other discs, but it's still good to have if you're a tried and true Tull fan. ENJOY!!!

With this Living With War, Neil Young is once again rockin' the free world

The original version of "Living with War," with its choir, has its charms, and some songs on it just don't work as well without the extra voices (e.g. the "flip flop" section of "Let's Impeach The President").

That being said, it's inarguable that once you remove the non-rock choir section, you're left with pure rock. Pure Neil Young rock. Cherry.

However -- what the hell is up with Neil Young releasing two versions of everything recently? "Greendale" comes to mind. Don't like having to buy two versions of the same album.

3 out of 5 stars Bernie in TO.......2007-03-25

Does anyone really need this disc? As an avid fan for 30 years or more and possesing most of the catalogue it is disheartening to find ol' Neil putting out a purely redundant disc such as this. There is nothing remotely "raw" here, just a background vocals stripped version of the original recording. True, the more austere sound here makes for a more personal, vunerable listen than the original. But it is not the raw we expect from ol' Shakey. Raw is Mirrorball, raw is Baby What You Want Me To Do, that old Jimmy Reed tune that fills out Broken Arrow. "Raw" is a case of misleading advertising, pure and simple. His fans deserve better.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the original.......2007-02-16

This version of Living With War is a lot more raw than the originally released album. On here, it's only Neil singing, leaving out the choir, which I thought had weakened the first effort just a little bit, but not much. This is taken from the first mix at the time of the recording, and it comes across as more urgent than the first release. The guitar has more feedback, and it sounds a lot like a Crazy Horse collaboration, although it's not.

5 out of 5 stars RAW is the way to go!.......2007-02-13

Buy this for the RAW audio...the other reviews are right; I prefer this recording to the original LWW with choir, etc.

The LWW videos are not Dolby Surround (they are 2 channel) nor are they wide screen format, but the content is historically significant and adds enjoyment to the listening experience.

The "archive" songs (Mideast Vacation & Around the World) recorded originally during a 1986 Crazy Horse concert are fantastic, appear to be recorded in a different format (dolby?)than the LWW stuff, and are relevant to the LWW theme.

A great package!

You may want to take care in opening the CD/DVD package to save the sticker on the outside...it has format info, etc that I have not noticed inside (although I must admit I have not spent as much time with this set as I would like so there might be info there).

I've been listening to Trower for almost 40 years ...
he was once as good as any rock/blues guitarist going ...
this is THAT guy!!!!
this is neither sappy or layed back ... this is not merely a job ... this has that fire in the belly passion he was always known for.
You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Trower Still Plays The Power.......2006-12-03

Robin Trower's Live Out Of Time harkens back to the hey day of the 70's when Trower would stroll on stage, throw his head back and rock the stadium. Age has taken nothing away from Trower and with Davey Pattison at the helm for the vocals he has found a blues singer that can deliver. The opening song begins a hot set of live performed music that every Trower fan mst see. If you are looking for a DVD of an excellent live performance, then this is a must have DVD of one of the world's greatest unsung heroes of rock/blues.

4 out of 5 stars Living Out of Time.......2006-08-20

I resally enjoy this album, mainly because it brings me back to a much earlier time of my life and the music was great then as it is now.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fantastic................2006-08-07

I don't write many reviews. For this DVD, I thought I would. This is a tremendous showcase of one of the underrated guitar gods out there. He showcases about five new songs which are all fantastic. I've followed Trower's career since around 1976. These new songs are as good as rockers I have heard anytime. He starts with Too Rolling Stoned and finishes with the Little Bit of Sympathy. In between alot of great rock and electric blues. I never had the chance to see this guy live and I was blown away. It looks like only about 100 people or so are at this gig. Actually, the crowd is not very enthusiastic. They should have been. The sound quality is amazing and the focus is on Trower's playing mostly. His lead singer sounds eerily close to James Dewar. I thought the guy did a great job. I don't want to ramble but if you are a Trower fan, this is a must. I thought the new songs, again, were fantastic and enough classics like Bridges of Sighs and Day of the Eagle sprinkled in to keep it going. A must buy.......

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-05-17

The best African American rock band of all time. No further comment needed. Every rock fan must have all albums from Living Colour.

5 out of 5 stars truly exceptional band and CD.......2007-05-05

I consider this CD to be Living Colour's masterpiece and one of my all time favorites, one of my "desert island top 10 must haves."

In my opinion, it is the total package...it has jaw-dropping musicianship and musical execution, exquisite song crafting, near perfect sound production and mixing, tasty song order placement and mood shifting, legendary musical guests,(I'll go on...), strong and (STILL) relevant lyrics, all rapped up in one CD when the band was at the top of their game.

It seems to me that the band put forth a ton of soul, time, and brain power in producing this record, and feels like they wanted to use their new found fame to get the truth out to the mainstream (white) kids who came to the shows. (me included)

I'm 41 now and CANNOT help cranking this up all the way through when listening while driving, one of the few recordings that can still get me geeked after MULTIPLE listens over 17 years now.

A gift to the world of MUSIC (screw genre) by one gifted and special band.

1 out of 5 stars Living tosh.......2007-03-19

Absolute Tosh of the highest order, wow man this sucks bigtime, why did they not get lessons and a proper drummer?????????. This so called Blackrock is about as rock as my Toothpaste. Ok for a coaster i suppose.

5 out of 5 stars Better than their first release, which was perfect.......2007-02-10

You can't do better than perfection. Or so I thought.
As I continue to grow my CD collection (replacing the hundreds of cassettes that I own from my teenage years) I am reminded of the many albums that I absolutely loved. This is one of them.
Living Colour released their 2nd album, Time's Up, to less critical acclaim and less sales than that which greeted their first album, Vivid. Vivid was sheer perfection, no doubt about it, but the fact that Time's Up did not receive the same attention is baffling to me.
Time's Up presents a more mature sound; lyrically deeper, musically inventive. The sound is layered with the hard hitting drums, heavy guitar riffs and jazz-infused bass lines that are expected from Living Colour, but the album is mixed with subtle synthesized, ambient backgrounds that give the music a whole new feel. And of course, there is Corey Glover's vocals that transcend the rock genre and blur the lines between R&B and rock & roll; soul, rage, pain, personified in song.
The title track, Pride, Love Rears It's Ugly Head, Information Overload, Solace Of You and This Is Life are all musical perfection; played with precision and attention to finite musical detail. All other songs are entertaining at the least and help to round out this work of art.
Perfection can be bettered; Living Colour has proven it with their 1st 2 albums.

4 out of 5 stars Expansion kit for version one.......2007-01-10

Living Colours second album takes the ideas of hteir first album and explodes them. The album opens with the tune Times Up, a slab of funk on fast forward that rips along like funk seldom does. But what this album really scored points at the time for were the tunes Elvis is Dead and Type. The former isn't as sacriligeous a swipe as you might think and instead is an inciteful attack on the respeated Elvis revival crap we had to sit throug hduring the 80's. And darn funny too. As for Type - it was the sort of activist/consciousness raising tool that litter LC's catalogue.

Also track 4 should be mentioned - Love Rears it's Ugly Head, which was a huge hit across several territories. Show me a guy who doesn't relate to this song and I'll show you a guy that hasn't hit puberty! A slice of humour, genuine feeling and male resignation all rolled into one. This track, along with the aforementioned title track, Elvis is Dead and Type are what makes this album tick.

Times Up does not have the bounce the debut posessed. Itn's not nearly as easy a listen yet gets brownie points ofr the bravery shown by the band for not putting forth Livid pt.2. It's still unmistakeably LC however. With Glover singinger and Vernon firing away on six string duties it's hardly going to sound like anybody else though is it....

The version I pikced up had a few bonus live tracks and an AKA Soul Power Mix of Love Rears it's Ugly Head. None of which achieve anything other than to make the album too long. and as for the couple of joke tunes like History Lesson (0.54) and Ology 1 (1.07), well they could of been left off along with Tag Team Partners (0.47). Quite what the band were thinking, scarring an album with a number of highlights with this bunch of lowlights is beyond me.

Overall a good album, not as concise as would of been best and a few of the numbers are pretty anonymous. But still, if funk metal is your thing and you liked the debut you could do a lot worse. A low four stars for this one...

An excellent collection of the best moments from one of the most influential heavy metal bands, this is a welcome alternative to the more complete Metal Works, for the fan who doesn't require quite so exhaustive a collection. This one has everything you'd expect, including the classics "Living After Midnight," "Breaking the Law," "You've Got Another Thing Comin'," "Ram It Down," and more. There are also some choice live tracks, including "Victims of Changes" and "Heading Out to the Highway." Not necessarily the best choice for the hardcore fan--who probably already has Metal Works and most (if not all) of the original albums anyway--but a fine greatest-hits collection. --Genevieve Williams

Forget this skimpy set and buy "Sad Wings Of Destiny", "Screaming For Vengeance", and "Painkiller", their three best albums!!

3 out of 5 stars Judas Priest - The Best of Judas Priest: Living After Midnight.......2006-05-27

When I bought this album I was a little disappointed that there are no hits on this album past 1988 but the hits that are on this album are great. It has the original studio recordings and some live tracks.

O.k. to be frank, I'm not a fan of live tracks on an album. To me, live performances are more visual and it's not the same for me to hear it but the live versions of "Breaking the Law" and Heading out to the Highway" make up for it all because both of these tracks are superb. The audio is great on all of the live tracks (no shorting out, no poorly faded vocals and an equal balance of instrumentation and vocals together).

And of course great hits like "Living After Midnight", "You've Got Another Thing Coming" and "Green Manilishi" make up for a decent starting point for Judas Priest. I will say that the better option (if you're looking for a compilation) is Metal Works because that goes from like 1977 to 1993. Or you could just do the right thing and get each and every Preist album. It may be spendy but the only 2 truly influential British bands were Iron Maiden and Judas Priest so it's worth it. And of course, all of their classic albums are just that classic. Not many bands' older music is relevent over time but I'd be lying if I said that Judas Priest's music didn't still stand the test of time after all these years. 3 stars for this CD, sorry but when you cut out so much not much more I can do for you.

3 out of 5 stars BARGAIN BIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-12-08

A good friend had this one back in high school. It was a favorite to bring out when we partied out in the woods. When you are good and sloshed you will enjoy this mix of music. I personally was usually trying to hard to get into this chicks pants (no luck) to notice that the disc is LACKING very much. This is one of those bargain bin collections that you can find at the counter at CVS for $5.99. If you are looking for just some major hits this may be for you, but be aware that BREAKING THE LAW is a live version (not so great either) and a good chunk of other songs are also sub par live versions, (I have a REAL problem listening to live VICTIM OF CHANGES, because I like the studio v. so much.) Also, a lot of these songs are poppish 80's tracks. Green Mananlishi is cool, but TURBO LOVER is only cool when you are hammered, and singing it to some chick who is PAINFULLY uninterested in you. I would skip this bit and find a better hits package (2 disc METAL WORKS is good), I'm sure there are better bargain bin packs... or why don't you just buy either BRITISH STEEL (1980), SAD WINGS OF DESTINY (1977) or STAINED CLASS (1978) these are all very complete albums stocked with killer tunes.

2 out of 5 stars Missing WAY too much.......2005-12-04

I am giving this compilation two stars because it was the album that got me into Priest. There are so many great songs missing from here, it really should have been a two disc set. First off, including a live version of Victim of Changes was a stupid idea. I like the studio version much better. Second, I don't know how the could make a compilation without "Beyond the Realms of Death". That is one of their best songs. Here are some great songs not included on the compilation -

1. Beyond the Realms of Death
2. Exciter
3. Stained Class
4. The Ripper
5. Dreamer Deceiver
6. Island of Domination
7. Sinner
8. Hell Bent for Leather
9. United
10. Metal Gods
11. Rapid Fire
12. Screaming for Vengeance
13. Painkiller
14. A Touch of Evil
15. Night Crawler
16. Between the Hammer and the Anvil
17. Hell Patrol
18. All Guns Blazing
19. One Shot at Glory
20. Rocka Rolla

"Metal Meltdown" is a good song, but I don't see why they picked it instead of "Painkiller" or "A Touch of Evil".

2 out of 5 stars Very disappointing (2.5 stars).......2006-12-31

After a very long hiatus, Living Colour returned to the music scene in 2003 with their fourth studio album, Collideoscope. During their heyday, the band was a rarity in hard rock as their first two albums, Vivid and Time's Up respectively, were very strong statements both lyrically and musically. The band could add any genre to their brand of music and make it their own. Although their third album, Stain, was a less challenging release and was hampered by a muddy production, the great songs were still intact. During the next 10 years, both the musical climate and the state of the world had changed drastically. When the band released Collideoscope in 2003, longtime fans wondered how interesting the new album would be. Well, the good news was that their social awareness was still intact. The bad news was that the great songs were gone.

The album starts out strong as "Song Without Sin" and "A ? Of When" feature menacing riffs from Vernon Reid and strong vocals from Corey Glover. Unfortunately, the next track, "Operation Mind Control" is very sluggish. The band redeem themselves on "Flying", a graphic tune dealing with the 9/11 tragedy. From here, the album is a mess. While tracks like the rock/reggae of "Nightmare City", the bluesy "Holy Roller", and the funk/rock of "Great Expectation" are decent tunes that grow on you, other songs such as "In Your Name", "Choices Mash Up", "Pocket of Tears", and "Sacred Ground" are hurt by either too many sound effects, bad production, weak lyrics, or unmemorable melodies. Sadly, the rhythm section of Doug Wimbish and Will Calhoun play it pretty safe, as though they were just rushed into the studio to do their parts, rather than leave their unique stamp on them. As for the cover tunes, their version of "Tomorrow Never Knows" is okay while Glover's vocals on "Back in Black" are painfully bad, like the sound of nails on a chalkboard. All told, Collideoscope is a disappointing album that rarely shows the greatness of their previous three albums.

3 out of 5 stars The title sums up the album - its a collision course.......2006-10-31

Realistically Collideoscope feels like seven strong tracks with a bunch of demos to pad it out and while it fits in with Living Colour's back catalogue returning listeners might be disappointed. The band feel inconsistent here, torn between coming back with a strong, traditional sounding album that would match past efforts or continuing from where Stain left off. They opt to take a mixed approach and Collidescope is the uneven result. Musically its a continuation of the style found on Stain heavy muted riffs and dark themes but Stain's bright edge is muted in favour of murkier production which accentuates the dinginess. The strongest tracks are Song Without Sin, which has a similar vibe to Go Away and displays Vernon Reid's fat guitar tone, A ? Of When, which offers thick, atonal riffs paired with a descending bassline, over Corey Glover's and desperate two line chorus and Flying, in the same vein as 'Love Rears Its Ugly Head' from Time's Up, which recounts the point of view of one of the victims who leapt from the burning World Trade Centre. Living Colour's strengths, like Faith No More, are bright pop songs juxtaposed with disturbing lyrics. This is demonstrated nowhere better than on this track, the whimsical chorus is slightly disconcerting, given the subject matter however Vernon Reid's solo is tasteful and eclectic and the rhythm section holds the song together beautifully. Other highlights are: Lost Halo, Holy Roller, Choices Mash Up, and Pocket Of Tears. Of the covers Tomorrow Never Knows is so much better than Back In Black, while the latter was done for fun, the former fits in so much better with the other tracks on the album.
With Collideoscope Living Colour show they've still got the goods so hopefully they'll nail down the vision a bit better on the next album.

2 out of 5 stars Glad I have all their OLD cd's..........2006-10-24

See, M. Bradley "kung fu-ness" 's review- I agree exactly.

4 out of 5 stars Welcome return, if not leaving a little room for improvement.......2006-10-11

After such a long time apart this record for one of my all time favorite bands was very welcome. And in parts it captures the brilliance I'd expect. 'Song without Sin' is probably the best example of the spirit of the band, a great song, and there are a number of other good tracks - 'flying' a standout, the 'Back in Black' cover goes OK in sort of a funny way but they do it musically quite well and a couple of the other tracks are good.

The rest of it is, I would not say poor, but better than they cover a lot of different styles which I found a little harder to get into (eg drum and base etc and some semi industrial stuff which just doesn't nail it for me), and to put it nicely some different produiction techniques.

Overall for the good tracks I am really glad I bought it: probably 5-6 tracks I can repeat over and over - and that's cool. It's not 'Stain' - their masterpeice, but after a long time it's just as valuable and it still shows they can make the same magical tracks they always could, I can't wait for more.

2 out of 5 stars And i USED to be a die-hard fan!.......2006-10-10

All i could do with most of the tracks on this album was shake my head. What a JOKE! I'm down for the cause and will always check out new material from Living Coulour. But i gotta say..i was hugely dissapointed. Oh..don't get me wrong. The (Back in Black) cover was pretty good. And (Flying) is pure inspirational genious. Just Beautiful. But the rest of the album made me want to use the disc as a coaster for my drink. I was especially dissapointed with the Beatles cover..(Tomorrow Never Knows). Now, if a quartet of brotha's can't get that song to come out soundin'as funky as the Beatles did, well....Nuff said. Get back in the woodshed guys. i want something on the level of the first two Living Colour albums. Got it?

5 out of 5 stars BRAAAAIIIIINS!!!!!!.......2007-07-03

Oh my lord, I watch this movie once a week. It's so bad!!!!! I am so in love though. I love the cheese factor, it is by far my favorite 80's horror movie. The make-up is so weak, but there's 3 awesome looking zombies in it. You'll laugh a lot, I promise. The acting is just as horrible as the zombie make-up. The special effects will make your bladder bust from laughing so hard. Yay, I think I'll go watch it now.

4 out of 5 stars Classic funny scary movie.......2007-06-27

You can nearly anticipate everything happening in this movie, but its still a good one to see. The makeup and effects are no where near as good as they are today, but still this is one worth watching.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-06-17

This is definitely among the best five horror films made in the 80's. It isn't really the best at anything: there are certainly movies with more gore, more scares, more comedy, even more nudity. But this film pulls everything together very well, has ample gore, scares, etc., and most importantly produces a very good atmosphere for everything to happen in. From beginning to end, the atmosphere and sets of this movie are great for the horror genre, and the tension keeps building throughout the movie. (though Tarman--played by Allan Trautman--was certainly a very high point in the middle).

I never really bought Matthews and Randolph (Freddy and Tina) as people that would hang out with punk-loving... well... punks. But apart from that small issue, the characters are great. Gulager, Calfa, and Karen, (Burt, Ernie, Frank) all give mature, straight performances, which provides a great foundation for the horror elements to be built on. The other actors also fill their rules well--not that there are deep character explorations here, but the characters are certainly good for a horror flick. Quigley and Venturini (Trash and Suicide) in particular come across well, though I think the whole cast holds it own well enough. Maybe two exceptions would be Terry (the Colonel) and his wife, whose performances I thought were lacking, though they were both very short.

This film had a lot of memorable lines, and a lot of memorable gags, as well. The split dog, the pickaxe to the back of the head, the captured female zombie, the request for more paramedics... lots of stuff here that is not just good, but also memorable. O'Bannon also enjoyed cramming scenes with all sorts of stuff in the background, to make the scenes at once more believable and more interesting. Some of the jokes in the film are also sort of comical, like having two friends named Burt and Ernie in a horror film (and one is a mortician).

Definitely a movie that any horror fan should see. And even if you don't really like horror films, you still might want to give it a shot.

4 out of 5 stars DVD transfer isn't that accurate.......2007-06-15

Now the movie itself deserves 5 stars and maybe more. But the dvd transfer is disappointing for those who know this movie like the back of their hand. I saw this movie at least 300 times in my life. And as soon as I watched this on dvd I noticed some differences in the soundtrack. Some songs were cut short or they played late. And a couple of the voices for the zombies were straight up changed. Now its impossible to list the changes without blowing the movie experiance for those who never seen this. So I won't touch it. If you never seen this before, then you won't notice anything and this could either be the best zombie movie you ever seen, or the worst.

Now for the review of the movie itself. This takes place in the 80's and you'll notice it quick. A company accidently got a shipment of containers consisiting of dead bodies and chemicals. Two workers accidently break one of the canisters and all he11 breaks loose. A small little graveyard party for a few teenagers turns into a nightmare when they find themselves running from the living dead. The movie has some gory parts, but it can be so damn funny at the sametime.

This is my favorite zombie movie. It combines comedy, edge of the seat thrills, very intense spots and a good soundtrack. If you never seen this before, I highly recommend buying this. For those who have seen it. Even though a couple of voices and songs are altered. I still enjoy this movie and I just take it with a grain of salt. Hopefully a true remastered version gets put out.

5 out of 5 stars "I know you're here, I can smell your brains". LMFAO!.......2007-06-07

A half-dog, a totally nude woman, funky 80s music, and brain-eating zombies fresh from the graveyard...this movie is AWESOME!

The plot of the movie is no where near believable. Apparently, the original Night of the Living Dead really happened and the government covered it up. Ludicrous as that might sound, I don't think the movie would deny or, for that matter, be ashamed at how silly the plot is. If anything, it's proud of it.

So I'm not going to waste my time explaining the plot. Just know that virtually the whole movie takes place near a graveyard. And it involves a group of teenage kids who, while waiting for their friend who works at a near-by mortuary connected to the government coverup, decide to party at the graveyard. What could possibly go wrong?

Despite its predictability, this movie absolutely works because the people who made it seemed like they had a fun time making it. And that's what really counts.

This is a perfect horror flick to watch on a rainy Friday night with a couple of friends.
