5 out of 5 stars nine & sixes, Mock orange.......2003-09-13

I got to say this band is my favorite. Mock Orange style is one of kind, with songs like Poster child you cant go wrong buying this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Some of the most talented music ever written........2003-05-02

My only problem with this album is that its so short. The vocalizations are superb, the guitar work is amazing, and nothing can top the drumming. This is a CD that is dripping with emo, and, friend, that's a good thing!

5 out of 5 stars The Best I have Heard.......2003-04-09

I went to a Mock Orange concert and it was awesome. I think they are the best band i haveheard yet. Their style is so unique and seeing them in person is great. My friends know them personally and they are great guys as well as great musicians. If you can, go see them live- you'll be happy you did!

This is by far the greatest cd I have ever purchased, and I buycds like it's my job. This is the most talented band in the indiecircuit. The drummer plays with odd time signatures a lot of the time, making for some of the most innovative beats you will ever hear. The guitar work is mind boggling, and these guys have some of the best harmony I have ever heard. If you think Jimmy Eat World can harmonize, wait until you hear these guys. I urge you to search your hardest for this cd. Also, they are set to record their second full length album soon. I assure you, that if you like indie and emo, you won't be disappointed. END

5 out of 5 stars title of review.......2003-06-11

This album is what you'd get if you asked some hypothetical supercomputer to create the most perfect indie-emo record. It is basically flawless, but at the same time it does feel maybe a bit too smooth and perhaps a little inorganic.

4 out of 5 stars good stuff.......2003-05-14

this is the best full lenght that the guys ahve released. nines and sixes just blew in my opinion. this one was refreashing to get and gave me confidence that these guys can write good lasting music. slow song, she runs the ride, nothing to write, brake lites on, are the best songs.

4 out of 5 stars Wow........2002-05-27

Mock Orange exemplifies everything that is wrong with the independent scene. Now, don't misunderstand me: there is nothing wrong with the band itself. In fact, I am falling head over heels in love with their sweet blend of Braid, Jimmy Eat World and American Football. The problem lies in their label -- Lobster Records. Now, be honest, how many people have heard of this label? I see maybe a few hands. I'm not badmouthing the label, either. The problem today is that too many really good bands put their albums out on obscure indie labels with little to no distribution, and in turn, very few people will hear the band. Essentially the market is becoming flooded. If this band could get on Polyvinyl, or Doghouse, or Big Wheel Recreation, they could be absolutely huge. This album just will not get out of my head to save it's life. From the opener, "Brake Lights On," with it's stop/start drums and crazy guitar licks, to "In Even Time," which will have you wanting to play air guitar for 3 minutes straight, to "Nothing To Write," which sounds like a Braid outtake [but it is much better than Hey Mercedes], Mock Orange rocks hard. My only wish for this band is that they get incredibly popular, at least on the independent scene. Music this talented deserves to be heard. Good luck, boys!

5 out of 5 stars funny stuff.......2000-12-12

I just read that this CD was one of Papa Roach's favorite cd's of the year, so now everyone has to buy. It is a great CD though so buy it now. Other bands on their list were Snapcase, Drowning Man and At The Drive-In. www.ubl.com.

4 out of 5 stars Marquette Radio loves Mock Orange.......2000-09-27

I can immediately tell that this album was produced by Mark Trombino who also produced No Knife's albums. There is a definate similarity. Vocally it is a mix between the vocals of Chris Broach and Bob Nanna (both x-Braid). So if you miss Braid and like bands like the Get Up Kids, No Knife, and Jimmy Eat World--this cd is right along those lines.

2 out of 5 stars When Good Rock Goes Bad.......2003-09-01

I had the (dis)pleasure of listening to this EP around a month and a half ago. I was on a trip heading to FL when my friend looks at me and says, "do you want to hear the most disappointing EP ever?" Naturally this perked my curiousity, so I agreed, and he slipped Mock Orange's First EP into my car's CD player. My first reaction was, "this is fine, I don't see the problem." That was, of course, before the singer came in. I'm not sure what happened between The Record Play, and the First EP, but the singer had drastically changed. What was more irritating was that the sound was no longer indie rock, but more set towards a Honky Tonk country beat. Now, for all of the disbelief, the bright side is that for the genre of music they aimed for was very well done. The problem is that a band so creative and clean, switched into a genre so completely void of what they were previously. I lost almost all my respect for them on the spot. I had read the reviews here that spoke of an amazing EP, and a great new direction. New destination to where, I ask. As far as I can tell, they went from non-commercial sonic perfection, to market targeting sonic irritation. Now, if I recall, there was one song somewhere in the EP that was more classic Mock Orange style, but even that paled next to the feel of their previous CDs.

If you are a hardcore fan of Mock Orange, and nothing will persuade you to changing that feeling, then I urge you to buy this CD for nothing other than pure fandom and frothing-at-the-mouth obsession(you deserve to waste your money). However, if you find that the change of directions that some bands take can be of bad taste, surely, do not buy this CD. I'm very glad I heard it before I decided to shell out some money for the actual EP.

2 Stars for denying your musical roots, losing your touch, and being generally unappealing. Mock Orange, you're lucky you managed 2, because while I disliked this EP, I can't deny that you did it well. Kudos to at least being decent musicians.

5 out of 5 stars something original in todays music.......2003-05-23

some of the most well written songs i have heard in a long while. everything is just as great as all the older lp's but more mature. in one of the reveiws below someone mentioned that these songs had a poppy sound to them and thats just a bunch of bull. these songs are very far from poppy. they ahve sort of a old classic rock feel to them that just makes me drol. not a bad song on here, and the full length should be more of the same.

4 out of 5 stars This band is never content with their sound, it seems........2003-05-18

Mock Orange seems stuck in a permanent identity crisis. Their first album, "Nines and Sixes," has an almost-Lagwagon feel to it. Their sophomore effort, "The Record Play," [reviewed here] seemed to owe more to bands like Braid and American Football than anything on Fat Wreck. Now, after a label change, the band brings us their latest EP, aptly entitled "First EP." Why do I believe the title is so accurate? Well, it's because once again the group has seemed to give their sound a complete overhaul, almost to the point where they sound like a completely new band. If I had to name some influences on this record, my mind would immediately run to bands like Modest Mouse, Pavement, and Death Cab For Cutie, as opposed to their harder influences of the past.

Gone are the crazy time changes and frantic guitar riffing. In their places are more straightforward pop songs coupled with slide guitar. Main singer Ryan's vocals have taken a drastic turn, as well. I still can't decide if it's for better or worse. On past recordings he seemed to be spitting out his vocals with intensity and vigor, whereas now his voice seems to take a more relaxed approach, playfully integrating his falsetto with the spacious guitar parts.

Like I said before, this EP makes the band sound like a completely different entity - keeping up with their string of identity reassignments. Standing on it's own two feet, this EP can hold it's own and is actually pretty original-sounding in today's music scene. If this is the new direction of Mock Orange, I can't wait to hear their upcoming full length.

Of course, I wouldn't be surprised if the next album sounds like a polka band.

5 out of 5 stars i dont understand...........2003-05-14

how anyone could like the older stuff better then this ep. i hope they have a full length coming out very soon because after hearing these songs i just want more. everyone buy this CD. this CD destroys the other 2.

5 out of 5 stars ssssssswwwwwwwweeeeeeetttttttt.......2003-05-14

I had never heard of these guys before and a freind of mine had a mix CD with the song diving day on it. after hearing the song i wanted to know who the guys were because it just blew me away. not often do i just hear a song for the first time and freak out like i did when i heard that one. the next day when we got back home i looked up the band on amazon to order that CD with driving day. found out the have 3 CD's and got them all. The other 2 are good but this ep has really changed music for me. everyone should check it out. you will be very sad if you do not take a chance with this one.

4 out of 5 stars A very good indie rock album, albeit kind of derivative - you'll still like it a lot - 4.5 stars.......2006-01-08

Mock Orange may not add anything new to the indie rock mix, but they certainly know how to make a very good album. Every song on "Mind Is Not Brain" is good, and although there aren't any new ideas here you'll still like it a lot. The singer is pretty pleasant and enjoyable which helps its appeal - most people will like him. "Payroll" is also a very good song that most people will like. The lyrics tend to be hard to hear, but when you can hear them they aren't all that interesting (they're essentially about nothing). The musicianship is pretty good, although it's a little poorly recorded and I suppose "lo-fi" sounding at times. Overall I think that indie rock fans will most likely enjoy this CD a lot. Highly recommended!

Highlights include:
the entire album!

5 out of 5 stars Mind Is For Change.......2005-05-12

When you think of older Mock Orange, you think of an emo-esque band that played offbeat punk melodies. Some of the most complex, and most impressive music to be put out at the time it was produced. I wrote a review a while back about how much I disliked The First EP by this band.

I'm willing to retract what I've said. While I find some disturbing similarities to Built To Spill(I Keep Saying So Long), the truth is that Mock Orange is still as musically impressive as they were back when 9's and 6's was released. The only difference is that the singer has retooled his singing voice, and that the music has taken on more of a feel for the experimental indie scene, and older style guitar work(Alman Brothers, Tom Petty).

My problem with The First EP, was that Mock Orange changed their sound completely. I wasn't really ready for that shift musically when it was released, and even to this day, I hold what I said about the CD to heart. However, with Mind Is Not Brain, I feel a CD that focuses on maturity, rather than on direction. While I think the change was very sudden, and would've liked a slower progression to the new form, I can't complain at this time about it.

Here's the unfortunate side effect of Mind Is Not Brain: the lyrics aren't that deep. Part of what I enjoyed about Mock Orange was that their previous albums, on top of being musically impressive, were also lyrically sound. I find myself being a little bit less swayed with the words that are sung on Mind Is Not Brain. For instance, "I was at a red light, he was at a green light" sounds very under thought(same with "in 1975, I wasn't alive, I wasn't a guy, I wasn't a girl"). While the musical ability is intact, it feels like they've taken a step back in the concepts of their lyrics.

But that's a small price to pay for a good CD. What you have to do with this CD is to disregard Mock Orange's previous efforts, because they are simply different types of music. When you are willing to open yourself up to this CD, you will be much more surprised and pleased with it. If you are a fan of Mock Orange, and understandably, find yourself put off by their new sound, do not feel that you are alone. I am personally unsure of this direction, however, I almost consider this CD to be from a totally different band from the original. Give it a chance, listen to it a few times, and you'll understand what I mean.

Let it be known, Mock Orange is one of the most musically proficient bands out there today. If you are a fan of music in general, you should not pass up a chance to hear this disc. It impresses me, and even I was originally mad at their idea to change their sound.

I would give this CD a 4.5, just because there's a few spots on the CD that sound almost identical, but I feel 5 stars is fine. If it wasn't for bands like Mock Orange, who were willing to step outside their genre, music would never have matured the way it has. Think about that, when you listen to this CD.

5 out of 5 stars The Great Mock Orange soars to new musical heights.......2005-04-30

This is definitely a 5 star disc. Mock Orange has been my favorite band since I first heard 9s and 6s for their creativity/originality and musical talent. This album is in every way better than both 9s and 6s and The Record Play, and it is not hard to say that. I would have to give the first two discs 4 stars. Mind is not Brain is by far the most mature and well rounded of the three, their best to date and the best rock out there today. It's just plain cutting edge. The sound is new and original, the songs are more complete and the singing is right on. The Great Mock Orange will finally get the respect they deserve for this masterpiece of music. If there is another band with this sound, I would love to know. It's time for emo to get funky.
I am in love with this cd, get it and tell all your friends to get it.

2 out of 5 stars not the mock orange i remember.......2005-01-10

I bought this cd the other day and i wish i had my $15 back, i don't know what happend to this great band whose previous two albums were supercool. they sound like they want to have a southern twang sound now, and have really slowed down, but not in a good way. don't waste your money.

Any I am really amazed to see it on here. I love this album, although its more along the pop punk style you hears from early blink. Still really good, i think they were still like 17 and 17 when they did this album. "THE GREEN ALBUM" as it is often refered to, is something fans should check into, but try something else if you are a beginer.
