Before Sgt. Pepper, no one seriously thought of rock music as actual art. That all changed in 1967, though, when John, Paul, George and Ringo (with "A Little Help" from their friend, producer George Martin) created an undeniable work of art which remains, after 30-plus years, one of the most influential albums of all time. From Lennon's evocative word/sound pictures (the trippy "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds," the carnival-like "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite") and McCartney's music hall-styled "When I'm 64," to Harrison's Eastern-leaning "Within You Without You," and the avant-garde mini-suite, "A Day in the Life," Sgt. Pepper was a milestone for both '60s music and popular culture. --Billy Altman

Sometimes the Memory is Better than the Reality.......2007-07-12
What a disappointment! I adored this record when it came out; it was so different than most then current pop music, calling upon traditions which we scarcely new of at the time. So while highly innovative pop music FOR IT'S TIME, I've since gone on to hear the real older music from which Pepper drew; after listening to Fletcher Henderson my standard for being impressed by innovation has risen considerably. Worse though, the HORRIBLE sound quality deemphsizes all the interesting effects George Martin got. Some of these same tunes are on the Yellow Submarine DVD; they sound fine there so maybe my memory isn't that bad. I'll bet the vinyl version is/was better.
Yuck.......2007-07-11
Sounds worn and dated. Sounded good maybe when you were on drugs in the sixties but now, it's drek.
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.......2007-07-03
Good to hear this again after so many years. So many familiar songs on one album.
The Genius of the Beatles.......2007-07-02
I can't decribe how much I love this album. I strongly believe that this is the groups best album and the best album that's ever been released. It's meant to be a studio album and not played live cause the guys were just so sick of touring, and it just was the only way with this new direction they were going in.
Paul came up with the concept after hearing about Elvis' Car went "On Tour." He thought that Sgt.Pepper would be an interesting concept to have these alter egos, so the music "wouldn't be songs that they necessarily wrote, but Sgt.Pepper did." The opening track "Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" and " the Reprise are really the only songs that directly match up with the concept, but the songs inbetween are just as close to perfect as one could get them to be.
With a little help from my Friends is great, but I personally like Joe Cocker's version better (the one from the Wonder Years.
Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds was written after a drawing Julian lennon did and commonly thought of to be a drug song. It's one of my favorite Lennon songs. I love the intro with Paul's Bass, it's so simple but it just hits my ear drums the right way.
Getting Better is about the time when John was really falling for Yoko.
I love George's guitar in Fixing a Hole. It sounds a lot like (Ticket to Ride)
She's Leaving Home is a sad song that's got McCartney written all over it.
The following track has that weird surreal circus sound that's very fitting for the album. George Martin was great at helping the group come up with new sounds.
Within You Without You often goes unnoticed i think. It's a great song by George, that I think is great, the sound, the lyrics, etc.
Lovely Rita and When I'm Sixty four are nice little tunes but not very fitting i don't think, I would have liked to have seen Strawberry Fields be on this album cause it was the first track recorded during the sessions and because it's a great lennon song.
I like the randomness of Good Morning Good Morning. The title comes from a Corn Flakes commerical that John overheard when he was writting one day.
A Day in the Life is right after the reprise. I love how John and Pau tied in their separate parts with a great orchestral crescendo. Everything just goes together and it just works.
Definitely pick this album up if you haven't or download it or check it out at your library cause it's a must have for any music fan or art fan cause this is such an important album in music history and it changed music forever, no joke.
Classic Beatles...Must Have.......2007-06-26
Takes me back to my youth. My kid loves it and doesn't believe I know all the songs and the order they are in on the CD.

Customer Reviews:
Love this CD.......2007-07-05
Had this when it came out on LP--didn't even know it was ON cd til just now, and I ordered it. Take it for what it is, a timepiece from the period. The Bee Gees in the mid to late 70's were as dominant as the Beatles were in the 60's. PS- CHICAGO was offered the "Got To Get You" song and passed.
to those disco freaks that love cheesy films!.......2007-04-19
Yes, I'm a HUGE fan of Peter Frampton and the Brothers Gibb and I'm an even BIGGER fan of cheesy films. I've been hunting down this soundtrack on CD since wearing out the VHS I checked out from the library. After having the DVD fall on my foot at my local Walgreen's (and watching it 7 times over 3 days), I'm now starting my search again for the awesome soundtrack. I'm a bit miffed that the tracks are out of order, but it's no big deal. If you love Frampton's guitar work, the BeeGee's vocals, and a cheesy film from '78 to boot, then by all means, get it. For those haters that don't like disco-fied Beatles covers, well, all I can say to them is pfft (oh, and not buy it if they're going to just fuss and cuss about how it's not 'right').
Why would you buy it then?.......2007-03-20
Looking at the previous review I wonder...Did you see the movie? if you did then you heard all the tracks before buying the cd. Yes the movie was corny and campy...and I'm glad it didn't turn out to be like Xanadu (largly due to the fact that no one had to act, they just sang the parts) but it still leads me to wonder why would you buy the soundtrack to a movie you felt like was a flop? I enjoyed the music therefore I will most likely buy this cd. I enjoyed the movie as well (sucker for the Bee Gees)...
Good Music.......2007-03-17
This sound track from the movie is a very good remake of the Beatles tunes. I enjoyed the movie back years ago and enjoy the music again now...
Excellent Purchase.......2007-01-10
This item was exactly as advertised. It arrived in perfect condition and in a timely manner. I would not hesitate to do business with this seller again in the future.

Telarc's SACD recording is 5 Star. This is elevator music. I'm almost old enough to remember the Beatles on TV. This is not them. This is Beatles ala choir and orchestra. Very Good, if that's what you were looking for.

The Best cover of the Beatles.......2007-04-04
Music of the Beatles performed by the King's Singers and Erich Kunzel with the Ciccinnati Pops Orchestra it's one of the best cover of the Beatles performed by classical musicians as them are. Thank you for the best product you have of this kind or genre.Music of the Beatles
A lesson learned.......2002-10-04
I like the music of the Beatles. I also like full orchestral performances of music. I like the quality of Telarc recordings. I like many performances by Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops, although they have a predictable tendency to get overly gimmicky. I bought this CD off the store rack using that logic. Also, I had the balance of a freebie gift card in my pocket, just yearning to be spent. I had hopes of popping this CD in my player and hearing something on the caliber of Moody Blues (Days of Future Passed) or Renaissance (Scheherazade). The moment the King'Singers chimed in with their barbershop-quartet style vocals, I knew this CD was destined for my "never will play this again" bin. Without their vocals, it might have fared better. I regretted the purchase, but was able to resell it to someone who had different musical tastes than I. I've had a few instances where I was pleasantly surprised with the purchase of a CD on a hunch, but I will try to avoid this kind of buy-it-blind purchase again.

Muzak of the Fab Four.......2007-01-30
THE BEATLES GREATEST HITS at first glance is classic "music of your life" fare-- stuff that plays quietly in the background as you pretend to read an old magazine while waiting for an oil change or chiropractic appointment. But look again-- there's actually life stirring behind these orchestral cover versions!
"Beatlephonic Medley" is lively from the outset and stays that way, as the orchestra skips rapidly through samples of "Got To Get You Into My Life," "Eight Days A Week," "Penny Lane," "Yellow Submarine," "Get Back," "Day Tripper," "Ticket To Ride" and "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da," all in barely over four minutes!
The only non-Beatles track here, "Mull Of Kintyre," opens with a lone female voice, followed by some gently expanding music, and then the full choir. The song has a rousing finale that seems to include every bad bagpiper in Edinburgh and beyond.
For "elevator music," "I Am The Walrus" is quite nice, staying remarkably true to the original-- the violins "singing" the "goo-goo-ga-joobs" are most impressive. The Royal Choral Society's efforts on the SGT PEPPER'S intro are a real hoot. This six-minute track includes a hint of "With A Little Help From My Friends," which is equally grotty. Then follows a lovely "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds," lovely that is, until that chorus starts up again. The coda is the predictable SGT PEPPER'S outro.
The other selections on THE BEATLES GREATEST HITS are equally interesting. Anyone who appreciates quality orchestrations and also likes the music of Lennon & McCartney is certain to enjoy this album.

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967) / A Collection of Beatles Oldies (1966).......2007-06-13
Exceptional CD. Exceptional material; sound and stereo separation. All of these Russian CD are very hard to find.
Sounded fine to me!.......2007-02-08
Maybe I am just not sophisticated enough to talk about highs and lows and woofers and tweeters and what did or did not happen when something was remastered. However I did not see anywhere where it claimed that this product was remastered. I bought it. It sounded fine. It was a good deal. Better than my old scratchy LPs, and my 8 track player no longer works. Call me simple-minded if you wish, but I thought that this was good music for a good price.
great material poorly remastered.......2007-01-25
The original material, of course, is as good as anything ever recorded. Unfortunately it has been remastered by deaf engineers. The dynamic processing is so poor that they cut off the beginning and ending of the songs. They boosted the high frequencies so there is no bottom to the mix. I guess I'll just have to be patient and wait for the box set from capitol.
the official Russian releases...awesome sounding and best value for the money.......2006-10-27
Okay, I bought this at a secondhand shop along with several others from the same Russian series. The series made by Maximum CD in Russia, are the official series available there and in the Baltic states. each CD consists of 2 albums each! Most of them come with bonus tracks. And all have the original unaltered backcovers in the packaging. I eventually bought 13 of them with the exception of a Hard Day's Night and Help! Both of which come with the US and UK releases! The sound is superb, the price is right, and they make the International versions( EMI/apple) look cheap and crappy. Which is embarrassing for the folks at EMI which can't can't anything right (see reviews on the latest Capitol Albums volume 2 and you'll know what I'm talking about)..
If youre lucky enough to find this, buy this. Its a limited edition, even in Russia, where everything changes at a dizzying pace, so they could be collectors' someday. 10 out of 5 stars. A job superbly done by the cool people at Maximum CD. Awesome

If you take compentent studio musicians, you can make an album with the sound of metal, but listeners will see right through it.
Clearly, there is no emotional experience available here. Better to have taken less-capable musicians who have at least listened to Beatles music. Reading sheet music differs from feeling the grove this CD is a good example of that prinicple.

Sgt. Pep Pills.......2007-01-17
SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND is one of those records (like PET SOUNDS or DARK SIDE OF THE MOON) that was overrated when it came out and then unjustifiably ballooned to "legendary status" from there. This album is much too inconsistent to be a "legend." Several Beatles works are by far it's superior, such as the American MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR or THE BEATLES AGAIN. For British editions, HELP!, RUBBER SOUL and REVOLVER all surpass this anachronistic "concept" piece in quality, likeability and attitude.
Except for a nicely done brief intro, SGT. PEPPER'S opens with two stinkbomb songs in a row. Side Two repeats that pattern with ANOTHER couple of mediocre cuts right at the top! There is NO way "A Little Help From My Friends," "Lucy In The Sky," "Within You, Without You" or "When I'm 64" come near to being even merely adequate, let alone "legends." Yet THIS is the Beatles album that gets the highest ratings? Uh-uh!
For a "concept" record, Side Two of ABBEY ROAD is supreme, and that entire album has held up far better over time than this one. There's a darn good reason there were NO TOP 40 singles on SGT. PEPPER'S-- the trademark universal appeal these four guys previously had simply disappeared in a haze, like a bag of weed at a frat party.
Undoubtedly, a hundred years from now SGT. PEPPER'S will be considered an anomaly in the Beatles canon and not the Holy Grail of rock music. Holey pail, maybe.
Ground Breaking Rock.......2006-06-09
"Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" has to be one of the most debated albums in the history of music, if not the most debated. Many people, particularly those born in the 70s and later, are struggling to understand how this album can make any list of the greatest rock albums. Others fail to understand how this album could fail to be on any list of the greatest rock albums of all time. Depending on your perspective, perhaps both sides are right.
If "Sgt. Pepper" was released today, it would fail disastrously. Comparing this music to that released since 1967, it appears to be nothing special. Ah, but there is the rub. For those people who seem to think that umpteen other groups are better, they fail to remember that "Sgt. Pepper" is considered by PERFORMERS to be a ground breaking album that was influential in their careers. So, it is true that "Sgt. Pepper" is primarily great because of what it was when it was released, and how it influenced rock music. So when you see lists of rock albums, what is the title? If the title is greatest or most influential, then likely "Sgt. Pepper" will be in the top 10, and perhaps even #1.
What made this album influential? Partially it was underlying theme of the album. The album is not a concept album as such, but it began life as a concept album, and enough of the concept remained that the theme running through the album influenced other rockers to make unified concept albums. Another reason the album is influential is the experimentation the Beatles did. The transitions between songs, the sound effects, the unusual instruments and the speed variations between songs foreshadowed the coming of progressive rock.
This CD opens with the eponymous "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." The song combines a pseudo live performance with orchestral and rock instruments in one of the ground-breaking moments of rock. This song alone is probably one of the most influential songs of its era. The song serves as an introduction to the pop song "With a Little Help from My Friends," with Ringo taking a rare lead vocal and doing so marvelously.
The song that follows is one of the more controversial songs of the classic rock era. Many critics suggested the song was about drugs, but John Lennon and the other members of the Beatles suggested a more prosaic origin. John's son Julian Lennon showed his father a picture of a schoolmate named Lucy and told his father that the picture was "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds." Any association of the initials of the words Lucy Sky and Diamonds with LSD was purely coincidental. The imagery in the song, while psychedelic, was largely inspired by "Through the Looking Glass" and English children's shows. The song has maintained its popularity over the years and returned to the charts sung by Elton John and supported by John Lennon in the 70s.
"Getting Better" and "Fixing a Hole" are two relatively mundane songs for this album. While the songs are more typical of the Beatles' style prior to this album, they seem slightly out of place with many of the surrounding songs.
I consider "She's Leaving Home" to be a song much like "Yesterday." The song is elegant and understated, with beautiful harmonies and simple musical themes. The Beatles could be at their best with the mundane topics of everyday life, bringing a power to a situation that few others have managed. This song is one of the best songs on this CD.
The song "For the Benefit of Mr. Kite" is clever and sinister. Multiple recordings of various instruments were cut and randomly spliced together to generate the sound effects heard prominently during the song, especially at the end. The song was intended to have a carnival feel, I think I am influenced by "Something Wicked this Way Comes" by Ray Bradbury, which this song always brings to my mind. The song is wonderfully experimental in its own way another of the ground-breaking moments on this album.
The song "Within You Without You" is technically not a Beatles song at all, as George Harrison recorded the song with a group of Indian musicians. The song is perfect for this album, in retrospect. I have always thought George Harrison's contributions, though fewer than Lennon and McCartney's helped influence the Beatles significantly.
The next three songs, "When I'm Sixty Four," "Lovely Rita," and "Good Morning, Good Morning," are like the pair of songs I noted earlier. Their style is more similar to earlier Beatles' music, though the use of clarinets on "When I'm Sixty Four" is extremely unusual for rock. Though the music is serviceable, the better songs on this album overshadow these.
After a reprise of the opening track, this album ends with "A Day in the Life," which is one of the best Beatles songs ever, and one of the best songs in rock music. The topic is very mature, the music well organized, and provided the perfect ending to one of the best albums in rock music.
As a side note, this album received four Grammy Awards in 1968, including album of the year, sandwiched between a Frank Sinatra album the year before, and a Glen Campbell album the year after. I believe this album was the first rock album to obtain a Grammy Award for album of the year.
There are numerous resources that explain the importance of this album in far greater detail than a 1000 word review will permit. I suggest those who continue to scoff at the importance of this album to review those resources. Everyone else is already aware of this album's greatness and significance. Enjoy!
CUTTING EDGE..........2006-04-24
With this, their eighth release, The Beatles continue on their musical journey. A conceptually brilliant recording, as well as highly creative for its time, it is a much more musically cohesive work than its predecessor, "Revolver". Yet, I believe "Revolver" had better songs, overall, even though it can't touch the production values inherent in this recording, nor the social impact that this recording had. Quite simply, it summed up an era.
This recording was on the cutting edge for its time, and it was a very definite, new direction for the Fab Four, as they seemed to want to shed their original mop haired image with all due speed. It was a psychedelic precursor of the youth revolution that was to come. Flower power was just around the corner, as was the so called psychedelic drug craze.
Some of the songs on this recording heralded the new era. The whimsical "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" was the mantra for this movement, while the mournful refrains of "She's Leaving Home" illustrated the general disaffection of youth which was so prevalent at the time. "A Little Help From My Friends" was certainly the blueprint for getting along for many baby boomers during that era which this recording heralded.
For many reasons, this remains one of the most important and seminal recordings ever made, and no music collection should be without it.
