Frusciante's first album is amazing.......2007-03-24
If you're a fan of John's, I think this is a must have. But because it takes a few listens to really get used to the odd style, I would say that this definitely shouldn't be your first Frusciante CD. The sound doesn't appeal to everyone and even if you like his other stuff, you might not like this. I personally love it, but it took a little bit of time for me to get into it. So don't give up on it if you've only listened to it once. I'm sure most of you will end up liking it.
Genius at work.......2006-08-05
In spite of some other reviews saying that this record was made "on heroin" it is mainly recorded during the BSSM sessions. Okay he was not clean, smokin'pot, but not on the heavy needle stuff.
The record to me is a record that i have been playing for the last ten years and I never get bored with it.
I like the reversed songs, the acoustic guitars drained with some distorded sounds.
If you hear closely you actually can hear the Peppers in it's rudimentic stage. This reveals that John is the creative talent in the band. Not that I rate Hillel Slovak's work lower than John, it is just a matter of sounds.
"As can be" kicks in and grabs you by the nutts, "Curtains" is John doing Joe Jackson's "Real Men" and sounds beautiful. My perosnal favourite is "Blood on my neck from Succes".
I hope John will go on forever.
Different.......2006-07-24
This album is as far from RHCP as you could ever get. I first bought this years ago expecting to hear John singing songs like 'Tiny Dancer' and 'Castles made of sand' which were Johns favourites around the time of his demise with the chili peppers. But what I found was so completely different it took me a few listens to get this album.
To hear a man so isolated from the world and so consumed by his addiction is upsetting, and scary to think that this could have been how we remembered John. But this album will certainly move you, and you can certainly feel his loneliness. The guitar playing is still brilliant, the words are painful and the production is poor. (I believe it was recorded on a 4 track recorder in Johns bedroom).
This album you will either love it or hate it. But once you get it, and understand it you will love it.
To all John fans - get this album!!!
To all RHCP fans - give it a try!!!
To everyone else - best leave this one alone.
A good record, but not his best........2006-06-10
Many people say that Niandra LaDes and Usually Just a T-shirt is John Frusciante's best work, but I would have to give that award to either To Record Only Water for Ten Days or Shadows Collide With People. That said, Niandra LaDes is still a superb piece of work. It is a raw, emotional, and ultimately very weird journey through the life of a man. Highlight tracks include: As Can Be, My Smile is a Rifle, Head (Beach Arab), Curtains, Mascara, Untitled #3, and Untitled #5. If you like weird and raw music, then maybe Niandra LaDes is for you. I personally think this record is a bit overrated, but still good. Definitely a worthy purchase.
Niandra Lades and Usually Just Overrated.......2006-04-27
First of I am not a john frusciante fan.
This cd in what i read is john frusciante best cd up to date...maybe its that im not into red hot or john f but this sounds to forced.I think john is aiming to bad for the eccentric madman genius label that his heroes have(Syd Barret,Capatain Beefeheart).
Yeah there was some moments in here that did something but other than that this is for serious hardcore everything john/red hot fans.I Got this expecting to hear more songs in the style of those seen in his heroin isolation period footage.....Hearing him drugged out of his mind screaming and doing noises like that would of made it a better album

Its a dark album.......2006-12-14
This album deffinatly shows the darkness and and pain John went through during the '90's. He screams through out the whole album and his voice sounds very raw, but there are alot of pretty pieces that he plays. The cd actually has 25 tracks and that is the Usually Just A T-Shirt side of the album (its broken up into 2: Niandra LaDes and Usually Just A T-Shirt.) the track that are from the t-shirt side is very guick riffs and singing parts, but they don't have track names.
it is a pretty good album but done listen to it alone or late because its kind of freaky!

A religious experience.......2005-09-25
As I sit here listening to this album for the first time, I find myself completely enthralled. It truly has been a religious experience. This man was on some stuff. It really shows. You have to have a solid background and appreciation in music to enjoy this album like I have. If you are looking for the beloved guitarist of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, well, you are looking in the wrong place. It sounds very Frank Zappa influenced. This is a man at one of the lowest points in his life, yet, somehow, he manages to pull out some beautiful songwriting, and some of his best ever material. Frusciantes guitar is as good and lucid as ever. The second half (Usually Just a T-shirt) is much more chilled and instrumental. Great album by one of the greatest (and most underrated musicians) of the past decade.
No, you can still be a music fan, if you dislike it............2004-08-17
First off, Alot of reviews stated that if you love music you have to like this, which is not true at all.
Although if you want a great documentation of what was John Frusciante of that time, and listen to some well structured lo-fi pop songs while feeling uncomfortable at times, this is great record to listen to then.
This is also a good aid for when your lonely and you can just pop this into your stereo and lie in bed, it feels like he is right there playing guitar and singing for you underneath the shelf where your stereo lies.
Misunderstood.......2003-12-29
This album is very misunderstood. I could say that I found a deeper meaning to his lyrics, but some of you might find that to be naive. Although if you're reading this, I imagine you're not some random person trying to find a new artist to be interested in. So I assume most of you are familiar with john, and with the chili peppers. And although I may be the only person I know that knows enough of their history, i know a lot of you do! But it really does make the man, everyone has to understand that john was in a really low point of his life during the recording of this album. The quality is low, because he recorded it himself! The singing is his style, his variety that he adds. It has certainly improved over the years...between his occasional background vocals on californication, and his constant backgrounds on By the Way.
The best example, has to be his singing on Save the Population, i'm sure you all realize he has the last line in the song, and he sounds, well, awesome!
I consider myself a philosophical person, so I can read into his lyrics of a time that his life was in a valley of lows. We've all had our low points in our lives, but he reached a certain low, that I know he hopes none of us would ever have to. The lyrics, and the singing definitely reflect the pain i can tell this man was going through. And to hear and see him now, he's a new person.
I don't know if he'd like to say reborn, but in a sense he has been. The songs on Niandra Lades are beautiful, artistically overwhelming, and simply awe-inspiring!
I didn't even mention the guitar, don't let me forget that! His playing would make a Neanderthal want to pick up a guitar and spend hours attempting to do what he is capable of!
I can't describe my love for this album.......2003-07-09
The music on this album is(without compare) the most pure expression of emotion through and instrument and through words. Every sound is either pure joy or complete agony, this is what the art of music really is at it's heart. I can't believe that anyone could dislike this music, it is 4track genius, irreplicable, honest, and almost perfect. RHCP and top 40 types should not expect the same appeal from this music, but really need to give it a chance.
As intensive as it can get!.......2003-04-11
Very different from RHCP, but a least as intensive as the Peppers! A musical caleidoscope, very interesting songs! John's songs are at least as good as RHCP. The low-fi sound may confuse some listeners at start though, but I find it all refreshing. I wonder why he's not writing more this kind of stuff for the group?
For anybody who's not heard John's solo stuff: try to imagine something like young David Bowie screaming his lungs out in a most dyranged mental state, his room filled with random sounding guitars, mandolins, u-name-it-instruments. John's singing voice is just something else! Songs start and end in suprising ways. He plays with daring lyrics and vocal delays & effects that keep the listener on his/her toes. Very emotionally touching! I've had good fun watching my friends' feaces (RHCP fans) listen to this the fist time.. ;-D
All in all VERY impressive songs that few artist or group would dare to put out.
Hope to get this one available soon again, I'd very much like to buy copies of it for some of my good friends as a present!
