Formerly of the rockabilly/hillbilly-minded Dave & Deke Combo and veteran of countless recording sessions, double-neck-guitar maestro Deke Dickerson goes solo with the facetiously-titled Number One Hit Record!. No big surprises here: The pleasant-voiced Dickerson serves up a retro-minded stew of 'billy, country, swing, boogie, and rock & roll that showcases the artist's tasteful and fluid six-string work. Don't look for much emotional depth--the corny "What's That Cookin'," for example, explores chicken dinner while the cover of the Treniers' 1952 classic, "Poon-Tang," is about... well, if you don't know, don't ask--this is upbeat roots music for the sheer joy of it. Includes appearances by guitarist Larry Collins (of the Collins Kids), pianist Sonny Leyland (of Big Sandy's Fly-Rite Boys), and Joey D'Ambrosio, the sax man originally heard on Bill Haley's "Rock Around the Clock." --Neal Weiss

5 out of 5 stars New Fan.......2006-11-08

This CD (the first of many I'll buy from Deke and the Ecco-Fonics) captures the fun I experienced live last night in a memorable show here in Baltimore Maryland. One of the little quirky things that makes Baltimore such an interesting and great town. Deke and the gang played a pie shop (yeah, pie shop- both fruity and savory) to a packed crowd on a Monday night. Odd for them, great for us. Guitar pyrotechnics, super upright bass, and who can resist a beautiful woman firing from the drum kit. I don't think you have to be a fan of the genre to love this band and the high level of musicianship.
You'll be hooked too.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this CD.......2001-10-16

This CD is a must have if you love rockabilly/hillbilly/just plain great music. I first heard Deke live this year and was immediately hooked. He's the best...and a really top cool fella in person as well! You won't be disappointed with this CD. Keep it rockin', Deke.

5 out of 5 stars Had to have this one!.......2001-03-06

As a totally biased family friend, I can't resist adding my two cents to the reviews of this CD. I haven't had my own copy until recently (bumming my mom's), and just had to get one of my own to drive with. The music on this disc definitely makes me smile and there's no question that I'll eventually have the entire Deke collection. Great job, man! xoxox

4 out of 5 stars great band.......2001-02-12

5 out of 5 stars The title says it all........2000-02-03

I met Deke and The Ecco-Fonics backstage while reviewing Mike Ness during the "Cheating at Solitaire" Tour. There we talked about their current album and their second album they were anxious to release.Guys with Talent and Experience!"End of the Line" is probably one of the greatest songs on the entire album, reminiscent of one of the few slow songs of "Bill Haley and The Comets" other songs to try: Poon-Tang, Mexicali Rose, and HotRodQueen.Watch for the ALL-STAR line up backing up Deke and the Ecco-Fonics!Great Rockabilly, be-bop, roots, Southern Twang mix! If you like Marty Robins, Elvis Presley, Hank Williams, Lead Belly,Buddy Holley, and the Big Bopper, chances are you'll like this!
